Is there a 24/7 Minecraft server for Allegro.cc anymore? With the incoming beta update on the 20th, most of the inventory related bugs should be gone(hopefully), and maybe the server will get much more stable.
Or is anyone willing to host one? I'm not a suitable option sadly.
For anyone willing to connect: mc.baf.cc (No whitelist)

I'd be willing to toss a donation or two for upkeep.
I can host one here at home no problem, though my upstream bandwidth is a little awful.
I could also make room on my hosted box if need be, but its already costing me more than I'd like, and I really need another couple people to fill in some space on it so I don't go broke.
I would have, but I decided to save money by letting my VPS go. Hence, ^ he is broke.
I would have, but I decided to save money by letting my VPS go. Hence, ^ he is broke.
Well, you leaving is also the reason why I could probably make room (That and the minecraft server mem leak fix).
cgamesplay.com server was taken down at one point because we required the memory on the box for its primary purpose. However, I can migrate whatever he had up to a VM on another server just fine.
Maybe I'll do that tonight.
One of the most laggy feautures in a server are monsters. But it makes quite a difference with or without them.
Without monsters, it's mostly a creative server. With them, it's quite creative too, but not everyone is running around with diamond tools from only playing 5 minutes.
I hope Notch does some serious optimization on the terrain code though. It appears it's sending the client each of the terrain chunks ALL THE TIME. Some hashing and checking if the chunks were modified could seriously drop the bandwidth usage.
I've read Minecraft can use some GB's on running a server full time, so don't consider the option if you don't have unlimited bandwidth.
Maybe I'll do that tonight.
That'd be great! Consider using hey0's mod instead of the vanilla server.
You get diamond equipment in 5 minutes? I seem to spend ages just mining... What's your strategy?
I over-exaggerated a bit with the 5 minutes, but I would say it's probably between 20-40 minutes.
I've tried 2 strategies that seem to have worked pretty well on most world's I've been to.
#1(Most boring, but works pretty well)
Get yourself a stone pick as soon as possible and some coal. Make yourself some torches as well.
From wherever you want, start digging a stair downwards until you hit bedrock. Once there, just dig a horizontal tunnel in whatever direction you want to.
Grab any iron you find(quite common) and smelt 3 bars(you can do this on the tunnel)
Make yourself an iron pick.
After some minutes of mining a horizontal tunnel in that level, it's quite probable you'll find diamond.
#2(Most fun, results may vary a lot though)
Mostly the same as #1, but instead of digging some stairs, just find some natural cave complex and go as deep as you can. You'll probably see some diamonds after exploring for a while.
Of course, #2 only works well on a server without monsters, or else you wouldn't last very long exploring with so little equipment.
You can increase your chances by putting this song meanwhile![1]
Nice song, but I hate... HATE those animals. Specially the sheep, even though I have no reason to hate the sheep more than say the pigs, they are both just as annoying. But I do. I hate those damn sheep.
Might as well post the basement, since the other thread closed:

That's one block level above the adminium layer. The lavafall starts about 5 blocks below the upper limit of the world. I have about enough obsidian now to ... well, make something really big. I've got 4 stacks. And lots more lava.
If we had a server where everyone had a small dedicated space that others couldn't "edit" (which I understand can be done) I'd totally make a devious platformer level for people to navagate. WTB moving platforms ...
Four stacks isn't really that much... although if you got creative with it (and interspersed other materials) you could do some cool stuff.
I'm up for setting up a minecraft server, specially one with private areas. Does that require a mod or something?
Yeah, I think there's a mod for it. Check the minecraft forums.
How big of an area should each person get?
I am interested in having some minecraft, would there be public areas? Or will I just end up turning an area into a giant hole of doom?
What you're looking for is Cuboid, and it's a plugin for h0's mod(the one I mentioned above). It was fairly easy to set up h0, but didn't try Cuboid(AFAIK, you only have to copy it to the plugins folder and edit some files).
Four stacks isn't really that much...
Pfft; it is for me. I had to dig that deep just to get any lava/obsidian at all.
It seems there's going to be quite a juicy update for SMP today with the Beta change!
Here are some mentioned features:
Included in the release today is leaf decay, working server-side inventory, throwable eggs, and less system hungry servers.
There's visible armor in the update today as well.
Fixed the bug regarding intact items when throwing them and picking them back up.
So it might be a pretty good time to get up the new server! (Though I imagine the compatibility with h0 and cuboid will be broken for a day or two)
I was waiting for the update before I bothered setting up a new server. Waste of time to do it with software that will be outdated in hours.
I'd say it depends on who has the best upload speed mostly. Hardware isn't really much of an issue with the server, it needs a high amount of bandwidth available.
So... internet pissing contest?
Depending on how much memory is needed with the recent updates, I have either 1 or 10mb/s available. Not a lot, I know.
I have a VM waiting for it on a box sitting in a datacenter with a 100mbit pipe. Memory is the scarce resource here, not bandwidth.
I don't think the memory usage of the server alone would go beyond 500-600mb. And I'm basing this when there was still a big memory leak, haven't hosted around since it got fixed.
Beta is out, and I've set it up at mc.baf.cc. I can't connect to it, because my minecraft is immediately crashing after I login, but I figured I'd announce the server here in case anyone wants to try to connect and see if it works. Once I get my MC working, I may import the old world from cgamesplay.com, at least if anyone wants me to.
[edit]
Should be up and running.
BAF: Works for me.
[edit]: Saw your edit.
Working for me. No one there so ima /dance until the boss looks away.
I saw you chatting, and I popped a message up from the console. I was downloading the new patch.
Hey, it's working great, even with monsters!
Shame the starting area is one big desert.
When it's working with the new version, you should really get hey0's mod so we can use commands such as /playerlist, to see who's online.
I tried to connect, but I kept getting disconnected. Not sure which end the problem was on. My internet is working fine, but no one else was having problems.
It's working even better than single player!
I think the decaying leaves are causing the framerate issues.
EDIT: See if you can find my hidden base with diamond tools inside
I tried to connect, but I kept getting disconnected. Not sure which end the problem was on. My internet is working fine, but no one else was having problems.

I see this in the logs repeatedly. Not sure what 'disconnect.overflow' means. There's a thread on it here.
There's also lots of weird timing log entries:
2010-12-20 16:43:31 [WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? 2010-12-20 16:44:01 [WARNING] Time ran backwards! Did the system time change?
I saw the "can't keep up" warning pop up occasionally on the cgamesplay.com server's logs, but it seems to be showing up a lot now, along with these strange 'time ran backwards' warnings. I think Notch just sucks at programming. [The time running backwards was ntpd running and being stupid. That should be fixed now.]
At any rate, I don't think its a server or network load issue on my end, I think its just buggy code:

I connected just to see how it works (Don't really have time for playing now), and while I can connect I can't really do anything because after digging something it just reappears :X (same as I had with the previous server really)
You have to move away from the spawn point. Anything near spawn will reappear unless you're an op.
One does not simply walk out of a.cc
It took me a few tries to give up. I might try again later and see if I'm still having the issue.
See above, it seems to be a minecraft problem, and not necessarily any issue with your system or your internet.
Yeah, I read over the page you linked to. Hope Notch fixes it soon.
I made a little sand bunker, which was delayed a bit because it turned night before I could really do anything, then Dario joined while it was night, and ended up leading a zombie and skeleton to the bunker before I even had a wall. We had to deal with them bare handed. Dario did kill the skeleton at least (zombie had killed him a ways away somehow, I was more focus on making sure the skeleton was trapped behind this block because his pathfinding was broke)
I attempted a shaft, but noticed that Dario made a "Love Shack".
A ladder shaft in an attempt to get diamonds was made as well.
I attempted a shaft, but noticed that Dario made a "Love Shack".
Oh yeah, now it's the "Allegroites' starters shack". There's some tools to get new people geared up a bit, I already made my tower a bit away from there.
Anyway, pretty impressed with the good performance of the server. Shame Neil Black can't connect though.
There are some new bugs with this update(I ended up with an infinite wooden door stack), and some items duplicate, but will vanish if used. It gets a bit annoying having to do inventory management with false items.
Hope Notch and their team gets fixing these bugs pretty quickly. Had a lot of fun on the server, I'll be around for a while for sure!
Notch'll get the bug worked out soon enough, and then I'll be able to hop on with you guys.
We had some fun with Dario and his inverted pyramid. We experienced a few glitches, like for example being able to create infinite doors, turning dirt into coal and torches dissapear if you plant a crop next to a torch in a wall.
I found a few diamonds myself and found a very interesting cave near my base, I marked it with 3 torches if anyone's curious.
I was just in the server for a few hours. Lots of fun.
I was just in the server for a few hours. Lots of fun.
Yep, saw your place nearby. It's looking good.
The performance of the server seems to have dropped severely though. It seems that the new server software is just... way more buggy and unstable. I'm getting the disconnection problems Neil Black posted about, and it seems to be related to a hardcoded limit? Hopefully most of this stuff gets fixed in the next days.
I had fun. Found a massive underground network that almost reached the bedrock. Laid about 400 torches and killed 20+ mobs. At least I got lots of iron.
EDIT: And about time the client started remembering the URL/IP ...
Well, the view from the spawn point was great. I decided to climb up this wonderful tower. Inside was a smelter, which wouldn't let me smelt. I left it, climbed up the ladder inside the tower until...
Internal exception: java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: recv failed.
Look for the mine entrance on the island with trees near the spawn point. Birthday Cake Cave is my mine entrance.
I found 11 iron ore down in that cave . Also if you see a brimestone wall going up halfway down a dark cavern, there's an exploding monster behind it.
So, anyone know what's causing the disconnect problem? Is it something that will plague me until it's fixed, or will it just happen when certain conditions are met?
I just tried again and still can't stay connected, so I'm leaning towards the first option.
I got DC'ed once, otherwise all good.
EDIT: Made a little underwater entrance to the tunnel system by the spawn point; good times. Should make a little storage station down there like the "starter hut" ...
Now I am getting disconnected all the time, is anyone affected too?
Also, this:

Just tried to login... First thing I see is a spider and a skeleton. Next thing I see is the Game Over screen
Which is odd because you wouldn't expect mobs in the spawn area. Anyway, I got that too.
I planted some trees at spawn so new players don't have to climb and swim across deserts and "oceans" to get basic tools. That's the only thing I accomplished because having to travel so far away from spawn for these basic things, I'd always end up too far away from other players and safety and die before getting back.
After doing some wandering I discovered what could be the opening to a cave system... I set up a crafting table and made a sign... I'm off to bed though.
I started a large mine in Single player, I essentially take a large area and dig straight down:
02 Iron Ores
50 Coal
03 Leathers from cows that jumped
10 Eggs from chickens
I'm also creating a timelapse of the mine in Minecraft days. So far I have 10 days.
For the people getting D/Cs often, I'd recommend tuning down the distance view and see if it helps. Until a proper fix comes...
I died yesterday because of a disconnect. Now I keep respawning in a pool of lava.
The update today should fix most of that. But it seems text is broken now so you may not want to update. I can't play
I'm not sure BAF has updated the server yet.
I'm not sure BAF has updated the server yet.
Probably not. Hopefully he can soon.
edit: it updated again, and the font bug is fixed!
edit2: every time I join, I spawn in mid air, and it takes several seconds for me and the mobs to hit ground...
Yep, I'm sure the update won't be of much use until the server is updated. Also, isn't there a way to get us back to the spawn point? /home or /spawn or something?
Disconnected from server: Outdated server

Thats bloody annoying.
On a computer that was lucky to get over 40 fps, now gets over 100fps... Didn't one of the releases fix the frame rate issue? And if so, how the hell did this one computer increase that much? I need to check my home computer's frame rate. That thing once hit 200fps.
Updated server.
Is it down now? I can't login.
Yeah, seems its lagged out.
The more this thread is active, the less we're playing.
That house is pretty cool Dario. Makes me want to build something -- I never feel like I have enough resources though.
How do you plant trees?
How do you plan trees?
You can get saplings from knocking down leafs, or cutting down a tree and letting the leaves fall apart. Then you can plant the saplings.
I'm not playing because the game lags for me. Not just in multiplayer, sometimes when I enter the menu it lags like hell. Like 5 fps. I don't know for sure, but I'd wager its because of Java.
Damn notch, why not C#, C/C++... Anything but Java?
looks like the server is back?
On a computer that was lucky to get over 40 fps, now gets over 100fps...
Same here. I bough the game just a few weeks ago and it was smooth, but didn't play more, until 2 or 3 days ago now that I have the time, and then it was very choppy. But with yesterday's update it's smooth again
For now I'm playing SP, and learning how to play.
You can get saplings from knocking down leafs, or cutting down a tree and letting the leaves fall apart.
Oh, and I was trying to plant the wood Now maybe that explains why a tree growed inside my home (where home = 4 walls)
Hehe, my fast computer can almost get 400 fps when I look at the ground. When looking off into the distance, it's around 120. But I think the render distance is set to far, and the other computer might be normal. When I set my fast computer to normal, the fps jumps to almost 300 for the angle that results in the 120 range on far.
The slow computer, BTW, a single YoutTube HD video is pushing the damn thing to the limit. And only if that's the only really active thing.

You can see my house from here!
EDIT: Wow I didn't even know that fortress was way off on the right.
Umm, I think the spawn point guard room is a little prison. :X You can't open the doors apparently.
That was supposed to be the spawn point. But when we have built it people would spawn on the roof or walls.
Doors open fine for me.

That last screenshot is old. My place is below the magma. Several of us have since put in a nice lava lamp in front, flooded the whole area where the creeper craters were, mokkan built some nice bridges, through there, etc.
Also, off to your right is the forest island I'm building up for farming lumber.
I seem to be the only underground dweller. I have a little above-ground shack and something of a maze being constructed below.
I especially love how someone tore down my forest and made a log cabin.
I seem to be the only underground dweller. I have a little above-ground shack and something of a maze being constructed below.
Ditto, I've spent most of my time mining and exploring my mine/caves. So my shack is a little neglected.
I basically just have a hole in the ground. Oh, I made a portal! But it doesn't work.
I which I could make a portal lying horizontally. I'd use it like a hot tub.
I have an underground lake you can use as a pool!
I really have nothing more than a hallway & room carved into the side of a cliff, but I do have a fancy deck with a railing and wood steps leading up to my hall. I'm ready to start mining when I log back in though.
I'm slightly frightened that by the time I get to start a serious operation I'm going to find the ground beneath me riddled with other people's mines and caves that have already been cleaned out...

You should be terrified. If you're building anywhere near the settlement then this has already happened.

Holy Moses ...
I saw the development of this take place, as I saw it at several points. It is massive, and it took a massive amount of resources. And none of it was spawned either, its all 100% legit, and mined. Kudos to dario!
I'll have to finish up my Optimus Prime skin. And maybe make a Roman Gladiator one.
Me and Vanneto made the initial plans. I built most of the outer walls, he took care of getting some resources and filling quite a big part with lava.
Some cobble (unintentional) donations were made by 23, NeilBlack, Mokkan... I can barely remember.
Also, it seems NeilBlack is building a massive castle. Seems we just need to make bigger structures now.
whoa, that arena looks awesome. tournament anyone?
I'm slowly working on the castle. It will require flattening out the land around it, but I've found that shovels make quick work of it. I may have to fill in some ocean, too... I did not plan my placing of the castle very well.
I'm not rich enough to afford being in a tournament =(
I will totally bet on one though!
I have almost enough diamonds for full equipment.
That's what comes of carving a huge tunnel out of the bottom of the map.

I made a pig farm today. I'm going to try and add an automatic pork chop catching mechanism of some sort. No pictures because I'm too lazy, and its not that impressive.
Oh I also cleaned up my island quite a bit. Filled all the creeper craters, built steps to my house, and fixed up the mine entrance a little.
Tomorrow I think I might put a proper wood roof on my house, and do some other stuff.
How do you get down there to pick up the skele loot?
Through the ladder that appears on the first screenshot.
I've created a feather factory (zombie trap) out of glass near SnoweyOwl's spider trap. To use it:
Stand beneath the extraction port at the bottom of the trap.
Wait a while.
Profit[1]!
Only a 3.1% chance that you'll receive a zombie instead of feathers!
Well, it's down from the 12.1% chance you quoted me earlier.
I've got a LARGE pig farm in the basement, as well as a new underground forest and wheat farm. I've got more pork than I know what to do with, I have at least 8 large chests full of the stuff, not counting the two chests I put at the arena and the pork I stocked the starter shack and the spawn castle with.
Is the server down / laggy?
EDIT:
Finished building's exterior, took like 16 stacks of sand to make all the required glass

Thanks for the vid Neil, I play in a server which is being heavily griefed.
Allegro server is a friendly server. \o/
For now. >:)
I just wrote a bunch of cron scripts for the server:
Daily at midnight EST - check for updates, if one is available, performs a backup and restarts the server with the new version.
Every hour a map is updated. Right now, the map is at http://mcmap.baf.cc. World statistics can be seen at http://mcmap.baf.cc/statistics.
Every 6 hours, the world is backed up.
Also, every 5 minutes, it is verified that minecraft is running, and if it isn't, it will be started.
I've been noticing something odd as of late, the FOV minecraft uses on my desktop is horribly warped. Its kinda like its programmed for a 4:3 or 1:1 view ratio, but creates a window that is similar to my monitor (16:9).
I normally play with the window maximized anyway. It's skewed/stretched, but you get used to it.
I get something that looks like a 16:9 sized window, but it doesn't seem unnatural in the slightest to me.
Its not so bad if you aren't moving about much, but if I'm turning a lot, fairly quickly, I notice severe warping at the edges.
Sadly I can't run fullscreen on my desktop. It seems to think both my monitors are one screen, and maxes across both and then the warping is REALLY bad, and since my desktop is non rectangular, theres a chunk missing on the LCD.
append: I first really started noticing it when I was building my pagoda. Turns out even if I stand still, at the right angle, it looks non square, yet it is perfectly square.
Today with Dario we laid the tracks for the rollercoaster, and before going to sleep I put a booster so people can ride it. someone972 offered to make an automated mechanism to start it.
Don't know if it's just me, but I can't get on the server. It's not my fault or notch's fault though, it seems the entire datacenter that the minecraft server is in fell off the face of the planet, I'm getting 80+% packet loss, both pinging our box there as well as their website itself.
At least mcmap.baf.cc is still up.
<--- can't connect either.
Blargh. I think God tripped over the fiber optic lines running to the data center or something.
[edit]
Back up...
I got a good bit done on automating the coaster. It's still not done yet though, I still have some wiring to do. Don't freak out Dario, it will work great when it's finished .
I'll let you do your work redstone engineer!
We still got other rides to do meanwhile. Merry-go-round? Pig-ride? A maze? The possibilities are endless.

Really cool! But all that lightstone... Is the rest legit? How much was hacked in? How does the queue work? Is there a counter on the switch?
I think only the lightstone was spawned in. The rest is legit.
I think only the lightstone was spawned in. The rest is legit.
Pretty much. We can't get those materials since the Nether doesn't work. We only spawn stuff we're completely unable to get. Rest is all legit.
And ask someone972 about the wiring. I don't really have any idea.
Heh, I'm playing all peacefull like, no real problems, slight lag occasionally.. Then dario_ff joins and I get lagged out and now it won't connect
I suppose though its the minecraft auth thats timing out now..
Notch just sucks. There's no reason the server should lag out with a handful of people. Then again, there's no excuse for requiring a dual-quad core server with 12 GB of ram to support 100 minecraft players either (these are figures I see people quoting).
The VM I gave is already quite generous for the use it sees, IMO. Notch would do perfect working on Firefox.
Anyway, you finally added that booster where I kept getting stuck on the coaster? Cool!
I worked on my underwater road today. Might finish it up tonight, but I got a bit sore and fried, taking a break from minecraft for a bit
Our Rollercoaster in SMP is pretty much done. Some details could be polished here and there, but it's working pretty stable. Video follows!
Excellent choice of music for the video. As for the coaster, It's quite impressive to see in game and is a fun ride to boot!
I'm slightly frightened that by the time I get to start a serious operation I'm going to find the ground beneath me riddled with other people's mines and caves that have already been cleaned out...
You should be terrified. If you're building anywhere near the settlement then this has already happened.
Actually, I guess I built far enough away... It looks fairly far on the map at least.
My first mine shaft to the bedrock/adminium layer didn't seem to connect to anything, but upon clearing some dirt near the bottom I discovered that I have a connection to the 'Sausage Mines'. It won't be too hard to wall off the Sausage Mines and just dig in a different direction however.
We need to spread out some more. I'd like to build an advanced subway system, much like the one outlined in the videos below. However, we need a LOT of iron and manpower to build the lines between the stations.
Personally, I would be fine with spawning in the materials to build it ('government sponsored'), but I'm sure a couple people may object to this - we'd have to vote on it. If we're going to bring in community manpower to build a community subway system, we either need to charge taxes, or spawn in materials for use on large projects like this.
I'm gonna vote for spawning in the materials... the project is just too big, and we'll spend a lot of time building it anyway. Gathering all the materials just wouldn't be fun, considering there's usually 2-4 people online.
I'd want to make it bigger than the example on in that video - it's an awful lot of work for the short distance that his spans, but we could greatly expand the map without having to walk the whole thing.
I vote against spawning it in. You have to ask yourself why you play Minecraft at all? What is there to the game so far? There's no goal. There's no problem or conflict to overcome. It's an open world where you get to shape it as you please. However, if it's just about building interesting things then why are we running around in first-person doing it manually, when you could much more easily do so from a mouse-driven GUI map-builder application? The things that people make are fine and well, but the actual pride comes from building them the hard way. We can get around fine already and a subway network will probably be obsoleted anyway when portals actually start to work.
I find that travelling by boat is pretty efficient, and it probably requires a lot less work to build a waterway, especially considering how much water surrounds us (and how you can generate infinite water without violating game world laws). It seems like making a waterway and filling it with boats is a more feasible transportation system and we wouldn't even need to cheat to do it.
I never enjoy cheating in a game. In Minecraft, cheating is fun to experiment with new things. It isn't fun though to exploit "god" powers to give yourself everything that there is in the world. Once you have everything, there's nothing left to do in Minecraft. Using the operator privileges to get everything just ruins the experience, IMHO.
I sure as fuck won't be paying tax. My vote is to do it the hard way or don't do it at all.
I knew you would say that. Personally, I find it tedious mining enough iron and diamond for tools, let alone for a huge transit system.
I play minecraft for fun. As you said, there is no goal in the game, so I don't see why cheating in materials for everyone's benefit is harmful at all. We can only get around fine because we're packed in so tightly and closely, and as others have already mentioned, our undergrounds are becoming very crowded. I began building quite a bit away, up north, and I can't get there "fine." It takes 3-4 minutes of walking, and is a pain. Building a large transit system would encourage sprawl in the world, and spread everyone out some more.
Traveling by boat is shit. I take it you've never tried to stop a boat and get out of it, without the boat being propelled away from you at a high rate, or having it broken.
I never suggested we should give everyone everything. I suggested spawning in materials to build a large and efficient transit system. Someone has to mine the materials. I don't expect to see you using such a system if you're not willing to contribute and you're speaking against spawning in materials to build it.
At any rate, we have three votes already, 2 for yes, 1 for no. Majority vote of the regular players wins.
I'm not in the mood of watching the entire video.
My vote depends on what materials are involved, and the amount needed. I can find plenty of iron mining, heck, we could even make an organized mine to find it. That can be fun too.
We thought the rollercoaster was going to take way too long for the iron. We built it in 2-3 days, with some contributions. Can you provide an estimate of how much resources we'd need? (Maybe looking and doing some math on the cartographed map.
That design is already in use for the roller coasters. I dislike the two switches, since its too easy to push the cart into the next track. (I'm not sure if that's also a problem with single switches though).
It is a simpler design to build though, and if it harvests empty carts and can dispense them on demand, that already fulfills the main appeal of the other system (being that you don't have to sit around and wait for a cart to show up).
[edit]
I'm not sure what materials are needed, but I would like to expand the current map a bit. I'm thinking a station near the spawn point, then build out several (tens of?) chunks in each direction - giving us much more room, a quick way to get there, and hopefully a more diverse map in terms of biomes.
The distance from the spawn point to the arena is probably the maximum distance that I would like to have to walk to get anyplace, but maybe that's just me.
[edit2]
I like the idea of color coding the stations, from the videos I posted. Though I wouldn't use diamond/obsidian/etc, we could spawn in some colored cloth for station markings (afaik, you can't create your own colored cloth yet, can you?).
Excellent choice of music for the video.
I knew that'd bring some nostalgia warming your heart.

I still ain't sure if I'd like to spawn items or not. If there's one thing I'm bored to hell, is mining cobblestone, that's for sure. Since this project doesn't require "building" with it, I don't see spawning that necessary.
Sorry, I can't really vote until I see the scale of the project. I'd say let's try and build without cheating, if in the long run we see it's WAY too much of a big project, my vote will be changed. So take that as a 'no' until the moment I see what you're talking about.
afaik, you can't create your own colored cloth yet, can you?
Nope, you can't. It'd also prevent people from stealing the diamond blocks.
Of course spawning cobblestone isn't necessary. My concern was the iron for the tracks.
Also, according to the wiki, colored cloth has been removed, so that doesn't help us anyway.
I'll hop on minecraft to discuss it shortly, if you're on.
Is there a vent server our skype conference call going on?
No. One can be arranged if you can get everyone to discuss at once though.
Think of how much online cred we would get for building it with real materials...
I logged in this morning and my boat elevator is still running!
{"name":"602973","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/7\/4\/74be4d2b74bd0520f08019b622ec4851.png","w":1440,"h":900,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/7\/4\/74be4d2b74bd0520f08019b622ec4851"}
Think of how nobody would believe us anyway.
Here's how I designed the SkyTower boat elevator.
{"name":"602974","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/3\/a\/3abda81153d0b39898f8ddea388d73bb.png","w":660,"h":579,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/3\/a\/3abda81153d0b39898f8ddea388d73bb"}
It's fully automatic, so the boat continually goes through the loop. To ride it, right click to hop in and, once the boat slows down, hop out on top. You can come back down by hopping in it from up top as well.
Explanation:
There is a slanted water slide that carries the boat into the waterfall.
Boats float up waterfalls
You end up inside my SkyTower, flying upward at high velocity. (Don't get out yet! There is a chance you'll die if you get out early)
Then there is a calm stream that the boat lands on. This slowly lulls the boat to the other end of the loop. This is your chance to calmly get out.
Lastly the boat falls down onto the high end of the lower stream.
In building it I broke a crapton of boats and probably died a dozen times .
Put wool around the area to absorb some of the breaking force from the boats.
I'm with dario, I say let's try to build it the normal way first. On the other hand, due to new year's I'm not in town (happy new year!), so I won't be able to join you for a few days. I also need to mine more iron since I donated most of my stacks for the rollercoaster.
Arena battles need more full diamond equipment.
Pretty cool, though. Go Dario!
I'm not sure why this is, but once in a while (Annoying that it happens when I want to play multi-player however) if I'm playing Minecraft, at some point, the screen become black, I can't do anything with it, there's no spike in CPU (actually, it seems the CPU usage drops as though Minecraft just stops) and I have to force quit Minecraft. One time this happened, if I start playing again after that happens, the whole computer will lock up if that happens again.
As neat as a transcontinental subway system would be I think it would quickly be made obsolete by functioning portals. For that reason I'm against the spawning of materials for it's construction. I still think it would be neat though, and I'd contribute my own iron and would hunt for more to help with it's construction.
You'd have less people competing if competitors had full diamond equipment. It's way too expensive.
I'd jump in on it. Anyone else?
Also, are bows allowed? You two fought unarmed.
The idea was unarmed fights. But I suppose if you want to waste diamond armor and weapons, go right ahead
I liked the "find weapons" system, though all the moving around was confusing. Why make walls in a melee fight?
We can do the two modes whenever you want, the fighters determine what they want. It's either nothing or take whatever you want to the fight. If you lose it, the opponent gets everything you were carrying with you.
There isn't a restriction to barehanded fights only.
I am going to construct Mordor. I've selected a mountiain, and will be covering the entire thing plus a radius around it with gravel, stone, etc. I'll add some lava, caves, and tons of monster spawners so at nighttime the whole place will be crawling with stuff. I'll build a tall wall around the whole thing, iron doors, and a redstone clock circuit so the doors only open sometimes. The whole thing will probably be 4-5 times larger than the arena in either direction, about the size of two biomes. I might also build a roof over the entire thing, so that it's deadly in daytime, too.
If anybody wants to help, I'm a day's walk north of everything. Check the map. If you have gravel, I'll gladly accept donations.
You should use obsidian for it. It's gotta be black.
I actually want to build Isengard. Or at least The Dark Tower. All out of obsidian. But I don't have the weeks it'd take to harvest all that lava.
I plan to place obsidian into it, but the majority will just be gravel
and tons of monster spawners so at nighttime the whole place will be crawling with stuff.
How are you going to do that? You can't place monster spawners anymore, if you do, they spawn pigs.
How are you going to do that? You can't place monster spawners anymore, if you do, they spawn pigs.
Oh, really? I thought you could set a different item ID or place it underground to make a skeleton spawner. Humph. I'll have to use 1337 h4x (changing the item ID in the save file).
Hmph...
Don't worry, bambam, the rest will be legit
So here's a bit of the stuff I've been working on:
Just finished up (mostly) working on my underwater tunnel.

Apparently there's gonna be a water mob in the next week's update. No more hiding underwater, I guess.
I'm more excited about the paint. At last, my castle won't have to look like a crappy pile of cobblestone!
I really do wish they'd spend more time on bug fixing and optimization. There are so many bugs they seem to just ignore. Especially the lag issue on the server. It likes to lag out even when just one person is on. Its nuts.
Apparently there's gonna be a water mob in the next week's update. No more hiding underwater, I guess.
They add new features in beta? I thought the transition to beta was a feature lock for minecraft so the could fix bugs. Come on notch, your shitty code is starting to piss me off - fix it! Don't lump more junk on it until it completely topples.
Don't worry; it won't topple. Things in Minecraft aren't affected by gravity.

Except for a few things:
The player
Sand
Gravel
Water
Lava
Items
etc.

I thought that as well, but apparently:
With Beta comes a larger focus on polish and content, and we’ll start early on with adding proper modding support with a stable API, and we’d love all input we can get on this from the modders out there. We’ll also add some kind of non-intrusive narrative to the game to help drive the game experience early on, and to provide some kind of late game goal. There will be a bigger focus on testing and stability as well, with more time between updates.
From his blog.
At least I do hope that if there's going to be a new update, he and his team test it as much as possible instead of releasing it and starting new weird bugs again. It's not the server alone, the client's bug about not receiving the chunks is starting to become really annoying(even if it's damn useful).

Personally, I don't even find it that useful anymore. I've already got almost all the goodies out of my underground network, and thus missing chunks don't really reveal all that much and usually leave me stranded forcing me to relog.

That's mine. It'll eventually be a QR Code. Stay tuned
Are pigs and sheep attracted to flowers?
Naw, they just spawn there. Progress is currently stinted on the project due to a global shortage of yellow flowers.
Nice overview (no streetview tho ). Maybe I should return and finish my humble mine entrance, since it appears untouched ...
(no streetview tho )
Oh, street view is available on this website.

On a sidenote, I've improved mcmap.baf.cc. Now, instead of wastefully creating separate map types for players and signs, I've added toggle buttons, so you can flip one or both on or off on any given map. Oblique/isometric obviously won't line up right, but those map types are disabled at the moment anyway.
Can you edit it so that signs that end with ;) aren't displayed on the map? That way it doesn't ruin the treasure hunt that dario set up.
How did you know it was me? :P
Ok, I'm stupid, forgot I posted that earlier. But yeah, don't go and cheat please. It's easy enough to guess anyway.
In addition to the request about ;), I'd also like to make a separate layer that includes only signs that have (!). That way, we can make a points-of-interest system, where the (!) signs are for general things and don't get cluttered on the map. Think, "Tomasu82's Pagoda (!)" and "Allegator Theme Park (!)".
Dario gave me an entire double-chest of stone stacks earlier, to help with the castle I'm building. It's almost gone, and I haven't even finished the keep yet.
In other words, if anyone has any extra stone lying around, I'll be glad to take it off your hands...
I left some for you on the ground underneath anything.
/mine mine mine
Hey, I found a 200th post; sweet!
I've been thinking of what to do underground; maybe a water slide? Hmmm ... need to keep up with all the other cool stuff ...
Thanks, I'll go grab it.
How are the plans for the subway going?
Well, from my end I am building a train station that joins my two bases, yesterday I spent like 3-4 stacks of iron in just tracks and 12 stacks of cobble, took me around 4 hours...
The stations are connected and you can go from the main station to the other one, but not the other way around yet since I have not put any boosters there. Also, I still have to do all the wiring at the main station so that if you press a button to depart.
If anyone wants to help by connecting other tracks to it or by helping in the wiring, it would be great!
I wish I could find that much iron.
In addition to the request about \;), I'd also like to make a separate layer that includes only signs that have (!). That way, we can make a points-of-interest system, where the (!) signs are for general things and don't get cluttered on the map. Think, "Tomasu82's Pagoda (!)" and "Allegator Theme Park (!)".
I like the ideas, but I'm not totally sure if I like the notations. I guess \;) isn't bad for hidden signs, but I'd rather tag signs with [POI] or something for points of interest, rather than the ambiguous (!) - which conceivably could mean danger or anything else.
Also, who the hell put torches all over the ground around my tower up north (in the snow)? I'm slightly pissed about that, because there is now a lot of missing snow and ugly grass patches in my landscape. I'm going to have to spawn in snow now to go fix it.
[edit]
So now, signs containing are hidden, and signs containing [POI] show up separately. Also, you can now click on the player/poi/sign markers to get more details (like position).
Dario, your signs make me think you're trying to con us somehow .
I might be able to help with the subway. What are we doing about cart management?
Ugh, now I will have to rewrite all those signs. If only you could just "edit" it instead, of having to destroy it and place it back again.
What are we doing about cart management?
Nothing yet, my idea is to use something like what CoeStar did (a two way station with track selectors, see episodes E105 to 109). Help is appreciated!

I think I found your culprit.

Whatever the hell that is.
Haha, that's awesome.
The POI layer is awesome. I also like the improved sign rendering.
It'd be nice if we could stake a claim to certain areas, even if it was only on the honor system. I think the initial application of this would be the POI system (e.g. "CursedTyrant's Place Do not modify!"), but it'd be cool if there was a mod that said things like "okay, this chunk can only be modified by this group of people."

There is, and I mentioned it earlier. If you could also lock chests so no one could get at my iron then I'd be set. Or I would be if I could get the game to run from the office anymore ...
Locking chests makes sense (adding a delay to get into a "locked" chest without a key). Locking down areas of the map does not. If I swing my pick axe at a rock I should be able to break it no matter what.

In reality, you can't just go up to a building and take it down in seconds. Perhaps marking an area to require a larger amount of hits for each block should exist? That way, an intruder can still destroy an area, but it's going to be more work and they're more likely to get caught.
And it would be nice if an overlay message could state you are in a given area so it's clear why all of a sudden you can't manipulate the world at hyper speeds.

I don't care for this idea. It's out of world affecting inside world. That's never fun. Now, if they explained it away with some kind of magical time paradox, reducing the amount of time it normally takes, then I might accept it. In general, I say screw your damn castle. It looks pretty, but it doesn't serve any purpose. It's therefore not important if it gets torn down or something. I'm not suggesting we go on a rampage tearing everybody's structures down. I'm just saying that the game shouldn't prevent it. In any case, I don't think it's been a huge issue anyway. You can't really own land in a virtual sandbox world like this. You claimed it, but you don't actually have any inherent right to it.
When we distribute land grants, I'm going to claim all the coolest castles. Then I'll sell them back to the creators for stacks of iron.
Now, if they explained it away with some kind of magical time paradox, reducing the amount of time it normally takes, then I might accept it.
What about reinforcing materials? Take any block and craft it with sand and water and the block gets +5 hp. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution, but I don't like the mentality of "no solution will work".
bamccaig just has specific ideas of what is fun in games, he thinks everyone else shares the same exact ideas.
I would like protected areas in "commercial" places, since there's no way we can avoid griefing. They ALWAYS have the advantage. Take the arena for example, the park, or even a possibly future bank. The idea is to make certain areas like the Adventure mode proposed by Notch.
Yeah, that is actually EXACTLY what I wanted to do.
You can't really own land in a virtual sandbox world like this. You claimed it, but you don't actually have any inherent right to it.
This is very similar to a program I heard of called IRL. When the server was first started, everybody was running all over claiming land and taking it from other people and blah. Eventually, they started using some people to enforce the rights of others. Once that became possible, it also became possible to define what those rights were. There were lots of attempts, they even had their own feudal system for a while. Eventually they settled on a modern ownership system and still enforce it through those people whose job it is to enforce other people's rights.
Now, we don't quite have the quantity of people necessary to maintain a police force. However, there are a couple other differences between IRL and Minecraft as well. For example, in IRL, a character can carry about 100 pounds. In Minecraft, a character can easily lift 4200 tons[1].In IRL, a character can mine through 1 cubic meter of stone with a pickaxe in maybe 15 minutes. In Minecraft, a character can do it in under 45 seconds[2].
In light of these differences, I contest that using methods that interfere with the fundamental building blocks of the universe is fair game. Methods such as preventing modifications to the spacetime continuum within certain timespheres, thereby granting a divine right to life, liberty, and property. The way our forefathers intended.
The whole game world of Minecraft is built around the idea that you can reshape the world. Taking away that ability, especially with server-side hacks, takes away the entire point of the game so far! I like Onewing's idea of reinforcing blocks though. It requires actual effort from the creator, and it isn't a complete server-side god-mode GTFO hack, but just a more material means stronger material system.
Lets all go and repeatedly destroy anything Bamccaig has made!
Lets all go and repeatedly destroy anything Bamccaig has made!
Jokes on you because I haven't made anything! I don't find that very fun. Those structures for the most part don't serve any practical purpose. They're just eye candy. Like a video game with awesome graphics, and no gameplay whatsoever. I'm more interested in the mining, crafting, and whatever actual gameplay Notch introduces in the future (i.e., a reason to play).
I feel like a great way to get security is through distance, but everybody on the map teleports like nobody's business. If you build your homestead 3 days walk North, somebody really has to want to see it before they make the investment.
The lesson here, is stop teleporting, everyone! I'm fine with each person getting his own /home warp point, but that's it! (hey0 has that feature).
I'm more interested in the mining, crafting, and whatever actual gameplay Notch introduces in the future (i.e., a reason to play).
I'll reserve the bottom 20 layers of the map for you across the entire world. But you may never visit the surface again.

I'm nervous that Notch is talking about finishing up Minecraft with it in such a terrible state. Still, this should tear BAF's troll instincts straight in twain:
Oh, and I’ve finally committed the Music Blocks to the repository.
(Oh, wait, no, I didn’t.. Doing so broke git, so we’re changing to svn because git is horrible and evil)
Oh please, what's the drama? You just don't build or dig in that area. That's all. Just for roleplaying, and getting away from the repetitive and boring minecraft gameplay. It's a sandbox game, there's no laws that we can't make our own games from it. You would be respectful enough of not modifying it in the first place anyway.
Oh, and I’ve finally committed the Music Blocks to the repository.(Oh, wait, no, I didn’t.. Doing so broke git, so we’re changing to svn because git is horrible and evil)
Oh God, he prefers Subversion to Git...?! Maybe BAF was right...
I was going to correct him on his blog, but it seems comments are disabled (or Facebook/Twitter based, neither of which I have or allow to run).
Actually, now that I think about it, I think I might have told him to use Git in the first place... I must follow up!
I feel like a great way to get security is through distance, but everybody on the map teleports like nobody's business. If you build your homestead 3 days walk North, somebody really has to want to see it before they make the investment.
I tried that, and someone littered my lawn with torches.
I'm nervous that Notch is talking about finishing up Minecraft with it in such a terrible state. Still, this should tear BAF's troll instincts straight in twain:
We had a nice discussion last night. In short, only one or two people agreed with me that moving from alpha to beta should result in a feature lock, and as such, notch should fix bugs instead of introducing more. bamccaig said he would rather have new, broken features, rather than having basic things like minecraft_server work without lagging [i actually think it's hitting some sort of deadlock or something, just based on the logs] to hell every 20 minutes.
Anyway, at the current rate development on minecraft is going, I don't hold out much hope. Notch should stop treating it like a hobby, and become more professional. It is, after all, a very well paying full time job for him. It shouldn't be labelled beta if they are still trying to design the thing.
Maybe BAF was right...
Poor people have a tendency to tell rich people what they should do. Rich people have a tendency to laugh at poor people.
Customers tend to have this erroneous belief that they should get their monies worth.
Obviously businesses know better.
I'm not exactly poor, I'm just speaking from my experience thus far. And from the fact that I'm a customer, and the customer is always right (or, something like that... I'd be happy with bugfixes that matter, not new enemy types when the existing ones barely work).
The lesson here, is stop teleporting, everyone! I'm fine with each person getting his own /home warp point, but that's it! (hey0 has that feature).
The reason we're all OPs is because we can't use commands that should actually be available to normal players(like /list).
Hey0 has that. We should really get hey0 and see if we have better luck. Maybe the MinecartMania plugin and such will reduce the lag too. I'm believing those boosters and redstone circuits are the reason lately.
Customers tend to have this erroneous belief that they should get their monies worth.
Obviously businesses know better.
Unless the businesses are forcing us to buy their products at gunpoint (as with Obamacare), let them be. If the products really aren't worth it then people won't buy them, and the business will either have to lower prices or close their doors.
bamccaig said he would rather have new, broken features, rather than having basic things like minecraft_server work without lagging [i actually think it's hitting some sort of deadlock or something, just based on the logs] to hell every 20 minutes.
The server is more than usable, and a beta isn't supposed to work perfectly.
As we discussed last night, beta isn't a well defined development stage, and can be interpreted however the developer chooses. It sounds to me like beta for Minecraft means "start moving in the direction of actually adding a purpose and then stabilize".
I experience just as much lag (sometimes more) in mainstream published games that have been around for years, like Counter-Strike: Source. The servers also regularly crash, etc. Game servers are generally non-trivial software, contrary to your personal beliefs.
Since there really isn't even a purpose to Minecraft yet, a feature freeze would be pretty disappointing for all of the many users that enjoy experiencing the game before release and want to see what's next. The client and server both work more than well enough to experience the game near perfectly. I don't mind the occasional crash or lag spike. I want to see where Minecraft is going. He can worry about making it stable when he's finished figuring out what it is going to be.
I personally don't notice very much lag. Maybe it's you.
Customers tend to have this erroneous belief that they should get their monies worth.
Obviously businesses know better.
Customers tend to have this erroneous belief that their $10 is worth a gigantic mansion, 4 Italian supercars, and a pool full of Playboy bunnies.
If you haven't gotten $10 worth out of Minecraft already, let alone with what's to come, then you're doing it wrong. I've gotten a ton more out of that $10 investment then I've gotten out of $60 investments in mainstream published games.
Bleh, cross my last post. Seems h0 is outdated, buggy, and a new project took its place now(Bukkit it seems).
Unless the businesses are forcing us to buy their products at gunpoint (as with Obamacare), let them be. If the products really aren't worth it then people won't buy them, and the business will either have to lower prices or close their doors.
This isn't the place for this discussion. I do have a retort, but yeah.
My impression is that minecraft went "beta" just to increase the price to $15 and remove that line that said all future updates were free ^Other than that I still consider it in alpha (or even pre-alpha, since in theory there are many features not done (and new game modes) or not even designed yet). Of course Notch may decide to go to Miami and change its identity
This isn't the place for this discussion.
Sure it is. The only topic that we can't discuss in this thread is...
Does allegro.cc have a Minecraft server anymore?
OK, I'll avoid that topic. Now all you people that still have Christmas avatars, put them back the way they were!. It's bad enough the poll points to something that already happened the previous year!
Disaster at the Sky Tower!
{"name":"603020","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/3\/4\/346448af8b46035f0cc7d97652b56157.png","w":1440,"h":900,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/3\/4\/346448af8b46035f0cc7d97652b56157"}
I built a cobblestone generator which ran great for a while. It passed nearby some wood and after a while it caught on fire and quickly spread to the whole tower!
I dowsed water everywhere to save what was left.

This is why we always encase our cobblestone generators in... cobblestone.
Sure it is. The only topic that we can't discuss in this thread is...
A minecraft thread isn't really the place for a meta discussion on business practices.
/cast derailthread
k now it is
A minecraft thread isn't really the place for a meta discussion on business practices.
And a direct quote from you shows that you were starting it?
This is why we always encase our cobblestone generators in... cobblestone.
If you've dealt with this before and are knowledgable, could you elaborate more. Why must they be enclosed?
Hey0 has that. We should really get hey0 and see if we have better luck. Maybe the MinecartMania plugin and such will reduce the lag too. I'm believing those boosters and redstone circuits are the reason lately.
I've heard iffy things about hey0, not to mention the questionable stability and the fact that it won't be in development for much longer. Bukkit was brought to my attention, and I'm looking into that.
Bleh, cross my last post. Seems h0 is outdated, buggy, and a new project took its place now(Bukkit it seems).
Heh, I typed my above reply to you before I read that post.
The server is more than usable, and a beta isn't supposed to work perfectly.
Sure, it's usable when it isn't lagging. A beta isn't supposed to work perfectly, no, but a beta is when you fix major issues!
As we discussed last night, beta isn't a well defined development stage, and can be interpreted however the developer chooses.
And I still disagree with that completely. There is a loosely defined standard for these things, you know.
I experience just as much lag (sometimes more) in mainstream published games that have been around for years, like Counter-Strike: Source. The servers also regularly crash, etc.
Well, that's your fault for playing crappy games. I've played my fair share of mainstream games, and minecraft is the first to have these major issues. Then again, that's to be expected, considering it's obviously still being developed as if it's alpha.
Game servers are generally non-trivial software, contrary to your personal beliefs.
I don't see why minecraft server needs to be very complex. Also, a lot of the bugs I've seen are so bizarre that one can only wonder what kind of mess the code is.
Since there really isn't even a purpose to Minecraft yet, a feature freeze would be pretty disappointing for all of the many users that enjoy experiencing the game before release and want to see what's next.
No it wouldn't. You need a solid foundation to build a nice, long-lasting house. Save "what's next" for when you have something stable to build on.
I personally don't notice very much lag. Maybe it's you.
It randomly happens, and it most certainly isn't just me. The whole server program stops responding for a few minutes, and won't resume until a connection times out and it drops everyone offline. Oh, and when you connect and occasionally can't do anything for a few minutes. But there definitely is some sort of issue.
If you haven't gotten $10 worth out of Minecraft already, let alone with what's to come, then you're doing it wrong.
First of all, it's 10 euros, not 10 dollars. Also, it's funny to see you assign such value to a game that you repeatedly claim is boring to you and has no point.
My impression is that minecraft went "beta" just to increase the price to $15 and remove that line that said all future updates were free
Finally, someone else who actually knows something about software development.
If you've dealt with this before and are knowledgable, could you elaborate more. Why must they be enclosed?
I think he just means not built near wood, similar to how somebody lighting a cigarette probably doesn't want to do so standing next to a gas pump.
Not built near anything flammable. Things near lava can catch fire easily. Even cobblestone.
Also, it's funny to see you assign such value to a game that you repeatedly claim is boring to you and has no point.
There is more than $10 (OR $15) worth of content to explore. I've already explored it though. I'm looking for something new.
Then get creative and build something.
If what you want is more content, then you should still agree with what I'm saying. Notch should make minecraft stable, and add support for plugins.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Beta Said:
Beta is the software development phase following alpha (beta is the second letter of the ancient Greek alphabet, used as the number 2. It is not nowadays usual to speak of a later gamma test). It generally begins when the software is feature complete. The focus of beta testing is reducing impacts to users, often incorporating usability testing.
Also - I hate creepers. They've destroyed my mine thrice and stole my materials twice
And a direct quote from you shows that you were starting it?
And I was just replying to someone else so no I didn't start it. And I didn't want to continue it.
I think he just means not built near wood, similar to how somebody lighting a cigarette probably doesn't want to do so standing next to a gas pump.
How close is too close?
I've been toying with the idea of building a wooden tower too. I think I'd try to add a TNT layer activated when a torch burns out to stop the spread of fire. What could go wrong?
I was thinking of making a giant peg into the sky, made from sand, held up with torches. Let the water in, torches go out, and we get to watch a tower of sand fall straight into the ground. Probably been done, but hey.
If you want to protect your castles, it would be wise to use defensive systems
Castles are almost useless. I'm making a big one, but it's almost entirely eye candy.
When that's done, I'd like to make a real defensive structure. I've got some neat ideas.
Dustin D: "How close is too close?"
My experience is two to three blocks is too close. Usually I just embed generators in Cobblestone without a trace of flammable material within three blocks. I also create fail-safes (wood + gravel) to prevent lava or fire from spreading.
I understand that isn't too easy in a tower.
My cobblestone mansion is practically complete (only a few interior doors missing, and maybe some interior decorations) and has been connected to the world, and I think I've added a POI.
It's nothing compared to some of the stuff other people built, but it is quite nice and consists of quite a few floors and rooms, feel free to explore it and to furnish it if you feel like it.
I'll probably mine tons of dirt and then build a flying island below the mansion to make it look more aesthetically pleasing after I recharge my batteries :X
I haven't been able to connect to the server today. Is anyone else having problems?
The server is dead. Long live the server!
It should be up soon, blabbity blah, other things the DC has said to us. I think the machine is off, and they just haven't pushed the power button. We're harassing them about it.
Hey, this is the second time in the server's short history that the DC has been at fault for downtime.
Bad DC!
I blame CGames - he picked it. The DC I picked is still up. ;P
Well, I managed to log onto the server, but it isn't working right.
The map doesn't seem to be updating/saving. I made some changes in my mine, then I died (incidentally, I did not spawn at the spawn point), when I got back to my mine, the changes I had made were gone, returned to the state it was in before I changed it.
I made the changes again, then I logged out then back in. I logged out outside my mine, but when I came in I was down inside my mine (in the same spot I logged out in last time I played), and all the changes were gone again.
Neil, that was probably a lag issue, but if you continue seeing it, we'll restore the map from a backup a few hours before the power failure.
it isn't working right.
Same thing is happening to me. I can do anything I want but if I disconnect and reconnect, no changes are persisted (i.e. like if nothing was done). Is the world's filesystem mounted readonly perhaps?
Investigating...
[edit]
The filesystem is full from too many backups. I'm tweaking my clean script and then I'll restore 12:30am yesterday morning (the last backup completed before the disk filled up) - just in case something got fubared from nothing being able to save. I don't think much will be lost, but if there is, let me know (I'll take a backup before I do this).
[edit]
And we're back.
The filesystem is full from too many backups.
And you were so proud of all your new scripts
I knew I wasn't crazy!
I just hadn't put the cleanup script into cron yet, as I didn't have a sufficient range of backups to test with. Now I do, and now it works.
By "cleanup script", you mean "more hdd space"?
If you look at the script, and read the message I had sent you, you'd realize that there was a reason for that.
Great! Just in time for more ground-breaking(literally) additions tomorrow!
Unless Notch has really learned to test his updates this time.
And fix this bug as well.
It can be difficult to test all edge cases for business software, let alone for a game. The best way to find the bugs is to release it to the millions of beta testers he has.
I wonder what the 1 million(th) costumer will get. I mean, he's got nearly 3 thousand purchases more left for reaching that.
That would be a great idea, bam, if he actually fixed the bugs people found. But he'd rather add new crap to the game instead.
That would be a great idea, bam, if he actually fixed the bugs people found. But he'd rather add new crap to the game instead.
Complain to me him when he releases it with all of those bugs unfixed and calls it done.
And fix this bug as well.
That bug even works on Adminium.
I wonder what the 1 million(th) costumer will get. I mean, he's got nearly 3 thousand purchases more left for reaching that.
He hit it about 15 minutes ago, according to Facebook.
He hit it about 15 minutes ago, according to Facebook.
Huh, just a cape for the 1 millionth user? He could've at least given him some giftcodes or something.
Or is a cape in your virtual avatar that makes you different visually from everyone else that valuable? Oh wait...
I don't think much will be lost, but if there is, let me know (I'll take a backup before I do this).
The 12 stacks of iron in my house are gone -- could you put them back?
Yay, now my train line can return from its destination (button activated, sometimes several pushes are needed to launch though).
The 12 stacks of iron in my house are gone -- could you put them back?
You gathered 12 stacks while the server was basically unusable?
The 12 stacks of iron in my house are just fine.
A new update is out. A lot of new stuff, but as I thought, it's dyed cloth mostly. There's the new water mob and more varied trees. Supposedly there's some multiplayer fixes, but that'll wait until the server is updated.
The Online users in minecraftforum.net nearly take 2 full screens.
There's also note blocks. And cake.
And cake.
I bet the cake is a lie.
Oh wait, Note blocks.
I'm seeing a future synchronized orchestra by some crazy guy in youtube. If one of 'em can do a 16-bit ALU, why not some Mozart concerts?
EDIT: Oh, you can make different instruments? Now that's much more interesting.
I bet the cake is a lie.
I'm so proud to be one of those ten thousand.
I think that meme is so played out to me, I complete forgot about it when I first read about the cake.
Someone has to make a redstone powered music box thing!
I'm very excited to try out the new update! Maybe I'll have some time this weekend.
With the addition of the new block[1], we won't find any of it until we explore more of the world. Which gave me an idea. What if we garbage-collected portions of the world? We could rig up something where once a week, some portion of the overworld map would be eradicated. We might be able to choose chunks that haven't been touched in over 2 weeks or something, to ensure that active domiciles aren't destroyed. This could be cool, maybe for a different server. Thoughts?
I keep forgetting how to embed videos.
To embed any media (graphic, audio, video) you only need to surround the URI in square brackets. Write it down or take a picture!

Well, if Matthew would the Formatting Help page, I'd be able to look up formatting things that I rarely use.
I'm working on a truly giant wall in single player. To my shame, I am hacking in the materials.
I'm lame; I don't know how to hack and I don't think I'm an op on the server.
The music is cute ...
I'm lame; I don't know how to hack and I don't think I'm an op on the server.
I'm using InvEdit. I don't know how up-to-date it is, but it works for getting massive amounts of stone.
I don't hack in materials on the server. My castle is going to be entirely legit.
I guess the server hasn't been updated, I get a UTFDataFormatException when trying to connect.
Yeah, that's why I've been working on a project in single player. The first section of my massive wall is done.
I just manually kicked off an update. Otherwise, it would have updated on its own at midnight anyhow. But yeah, 1.2 beta is running now.
Well, if Matthew would the Formatting Help page, I'd be able to look up formatting things that I rarely use.
You accidentally a word there. I have no idea what you mean.
Heh, thats pretty good. Anyone do Star Trek themes?
Nice job with the door bell. The Still Alive intro is awesome too. I can't wait to see what people do with the note blocks!
I take it back, StarTrek themes can wait, someone absolutely has to make a giant keyboard like in the movie Big.
You accidentally a word there. I have no idea what you mean.
Update. If Matthew would update it, is what I meant.
It was updated the day video support was added.
Then I must be blind.
Then I must be blind.

Something to keep in mind is that the wiki syntax (such as [uri]) is a convenience, but A.cc also supports XHTML tags for basically all markup. So if you want to figure out how to do something in A.cc and can't find it, one way to try to find an answer is look up how to do it with XHTML.
Oh. Objects = video... I didn't make that connection.
In other news... Minecraft. It's cool.
Who screwed my tower up up north? It's the random tower, fairly near to the giant QR code cgames is building. Not only did someone place torches all over and melt half the snow, but they also put holes in my wall and replaced it with glass. I don't want windows. And, thanks to how shitty the half-stone works, I have to destroy everything above where the hole to be patched is, all the way to the top of the world, and rebuild it all. Thanks a lot.
Oh crap! That's sucky. I think you'd be justified in opening up a level editor to fix it.
What makes that even more annoying is a double half stone seems to only give back a single halfstone when its broken. Or at least thats all I was getting back when I was working on my tower and glass tunnel.
I don't mind that issue, because we have tons of cobble anyway. But you can't place one half stone on top of another in the same block unless the one above it is empty.
The part that really disappoints me remains the torches that melted all the snow.
No reason to level edit, I just need to be on for long enough to spawn in snow and destroy all the torches.
Thats pretty cool.
You must be close enough to the building that things still spawn.. Neat.
I've heard (I believe it was from Notch) that in single player, tiles in a 300x300-tile area surrounding the player are simulated for purposes of spawning, redstone, water, etc.
I didn't think it was 300x300 for random monster spawning. I thought it was significantly smaller.
What I may have heard was that redstone was 300x300 (Google confirms this as at the least a wide-spread rumor), and took that to mean that 300x300 tiles surrounding the player were "active", and applied that to random monster spawning.
It very well could be. I don't know.
I fear a mob trap that's big enough will make the server lag a lot. In conjunction with all the redstone we're using and the carts, we won't be able to login back...
Yeah, I made another redstone contraption, with music blocks... I hope all my redstone isn't slowing the server.
At least currently, the only problem the server has is that it needs more RAM and Notch wrote the code. The lag issues come from network bandwidth. I suspect he is doing all of the client network stuff in lockstep, meaning that when I log in and download all of the chunks, none of your actions get processed by the server until it's finished sending all of the chunk data. Just my guess.
{"name":"603131","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/d\/0\/d0c3d7a01fd24d5335a5f62fe2b41a6d.jpg","w":906,"h":639,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/d\/0\/d0c3d7a01fd24d5335a5f62fe2b41a6d"}
It doesn't need more RAM. It will always be pegged because I tell JVM to use no more or less than 1GB.
Also, I heard that mob towers don't work worth a shit on SMP.
Super laggy today, it was unbearable.
And whenever I complain of the software being shitty, everyone jumps up to tell me I'm just hating on notch because he's successful.
Hey, stop hating on Notch. He has to hand-deliver the level chunks to each client each time they connect. He barely has time to sleep.
BAF: Minecraft is shitty. Its written in Java, thats the first flaw.
So the lesson to make money is -- make shitty games?
By all means, show me flawless software more complicated than "Hello, World".
By all means, show me flawless software more complicated than "Hello, World".
OSX, according to Apple fans.
So the lesson to make money is -- make shitty games?
As you know, everybody poops.
I think dumber coders tend to make popular games. Smart coders spend time working on harder and harder problems and make very unpopular games.
The law of diminishing returns tells us that increased functionality of a game doesn't result in a corresponding increase in sales. Therefore, a given programmer will make more money by putting quantity over quality, e.g. several crappy games vs. one highly polished one.
I don't think your interpretation of the law of diminishing returns applies. For instance allegro.cc has crap tons of games and a single game, minecraft, makes dramatically more money.
The theory that being dumber will make you more successful, however, I do believe.
I think you're on to something, but I don't think intelligence enters into it the way you might think, or at least I wouldn't use the word "dumb" like they're doing something wrong ...
Analytical coder: plans all his class object relationships, uses appropriate technology, modular design, reuses code, makes it moddable and networked and all that even when he doesn't have to.
Intuitive coder: omg when the monster truck gets hit by the homing missiles the chimpanzee driving should totally shoot out the windshield with his ass on fire screaming AAAAAAAAAAAA
Now, which would you rather play?
An analytical coder might reuse code, but reusing code is more suited to the crappy designer, since he can pump several games out using lots of common code, which may not be optimal.
Having multiple games where when the monster truck gets hit by the homing missiles the chimpanzee driving totally shoots out the windshield with his ass on fire screaming AAAAAAAAAAAA is always optimal.
The only way I think the crappy aspects of Minecraft have led to its success is the lack of gameplay explanation. It basically necessitated the player to get online (with a web browser) within five minutes. This benefited the community and word-of-mouth viral spread of the game.
And the blog, can't forget the blog.
For anyone interested, Yahtzee reviewed Minecraft. Since there are some people out there that don't seem to form an opinion until Yahtzee says so.

That was so spot on...
That it was. And I did already have that opinion but now that someone publicly agrees with me, I can publicly declare it: Minecraft's a nerdy waste of time.
Now go build your cocks.

That is happening because the thread has grown to 350 posts and you probably have your forum settings set to put them all on one page. The per post processing that ML does with JavaScript is taking too long with so many posts, so Firefox is giving you the option to stop the script from executing.
Ah, thanks. Changed it to 100 posts per page.
Someone in my office thought Minecraft was dumb and useless until they saw the Zero Punctuation review. Now they think it's 'neat'.

I've accidentally breached someone's mine (at the very bottom of the world) from above. I built a roof over the area, though I left your mine slightly messy.
Whoever you are do not breach the roof I built as that will flood your mine with water (I've also uncovered a nearby lava stream so I'd be very careful not to dig upwards in any way :X)
Sorry for that.
I take it from the above post that there are no coordinates in Minecraft to tell where you are. (This isn't a bad thing, just wondering.)
You can get your coordinates if you press F3.
You can get your coordinates if you press F3.
Heh. Never knew that before... neat!
I know f1 and f2 are related to snapshots, one takes a snapshot, and the other removes HUD elements (and sometimes it seems to remove some sort of color adjustment thing)
I take it from the above post that there are no coordinates in Minecraft to tell where you are. (This isn't a bad thing, just wondering.)
I've breached someone's mine around -311,196.
I've also accidentally uncovered someone's secret mine entrance, didn't notice it was there and I needed 30 stacks of dirt.
Both someones are probably the same person, and Someone suggested it might be Neil's. (Shame on you for not clearly labeling your territory )
How is the population on the server going? I haven't logged in for a while since I'm quite bored of the game for now, but I hope it hasn't turned into a ghost town.
Nah, its still active.
Any cool construction projects lately?
Any cool construction projects lately?
Guess it depends on what you mean by cool. I started a new mine, not that cool. But Sevalecan started a new one too, and then connected the two with a mine cart track thats like 1000 blocks long. And near his end he's build a few towers, the current one is made entirely out of Obsidian. He's also got a mob trap going that, once its bug free, will catch all types of mobs at the same time.
I've breached someone's mine around -311,196.
At what depth? because x = -311, z = 196 at the depth of my mine is... it's lava. You would have to swim through lava and then mine away the stone I had blocking it.
Someone else could have a mine higher up. My mine is just a shaft down to the bottom of the map, and then it spreads out at the bottom.
You did mine away all the dirt in front of the entrance to my mine, but I don't care about that, as long as monsters can't get in. If you need more dirt, I've got, like, 30 stacks that I'm not using.

I think I'm about to start actively working on my castle again. I added a secret room, and put in the foundation for a greenhouse.
I've ventured South and begun a mine. Eventually, I hope to gather a lot of ores and build myself somewhat of a permanent 'base'. Hopefully nobody goes down there and mines it before I can...
At what depth? because x = -311, z = 196 at the depth of my mine is... it's lava. You would have to swim through lava and then mine away the stone I had blocking it.
All the way to the bottom. I've breached magma from the side and killed it, so it's not directly under me.

It's definitely the bottom of the map, I could see Adminium/Bedrock.

Not right now, but I do have plans that will use a lot of dirt, if you leave it in a box near your mine entrance I'll pick it up later, thanks
Also, monsters can't get in because there's a door
Any cool construction projects lately?
There's the tower/waterfall I built at -311,196
It isn't really amazing though, made almost entirely of cobblestone. It is quite fun to jump from the top of the world to the bottom of the world from the center of the tower, you fly through a tunnel of water (the waterfalls) and can see torchlit constructions through it speeding past you
EDIT: Also, does anyone know what's up with mcmap.baf.cc?
EDIT: Also, does anyone know what's up with mcmap.baf.cc?
Map generation was causing server lag. Its been disabled.

I looked around again like "where did he break in from?", then I dug up and found myself in the bottom of a tower.
There's the tower/waterfall I built at -311,196
Wait, that was you? Dangit, I still don't know where Slarti came from!
I don't actually care that someone broke into my mine. It just bothers me that I can't figure out how.
I'm ZiggyDoo ingame and I broke in from the top, I was aiming to have my tower go all the way to the adminium, I'm not sure I see how that doesn't make sense to you :X
I'd really suggest you do not dig upwards as you might run into lava or water from the bottom of my tower.
Also, did you mess up my tower when you broke up? Should I fix it next time?
BTW, I'm in the middle of my next dirt project
Wait, that was you? Dangit, I still don't know where Slarti came from!
I'm officially declaring myself stupid, because I thought Dustin said he built the tower. My fault for misreading.
Uhm... I don't think anything was messed up when I dug up. But you may want to make sure you don't have any errant water flows at the bottom of your tower.
There's a bunch of dirt in one of the chests just inside the door to my mine. Take as much as you want.
I (Snowie0wl in game) put a cart station in below the spawn. It has radio button lights and a smart booster. I didn't connect it to anything so you'll have to add your track. Dig your tunnel away first then connect it, making sure that the track can't be flooded with water.
Is the server down? I can't connect and ping fails.
SORRY GUYS NETWORK CABLE WAS UNPLUGGED LAWL
I have a clowny data center.

Oh god, it all makes sense now, the rail tracks, the furnaces, the digging... Our game is an Auschwitz simulator.
Can I declare Godwin's Law on Minecraft now?
No you cannot. The Fuhrer would not approve!
In answer to the OP, no not really. Well, there's a few pieces left but most of it's been eaten already.

Last time it was working for me, Cartograph had been posting messages but the map wasn't working (I think Dario(?) tried it but I didn't).
In answer to the OP, no not really. Well, there's a few pieces left but most of it's been eaten already.
heh, last time I joined I saw nothing. But it eventually cleared up.
Answer to the OP? What? What the hell happened on the server?

It was ok a few days ago, as I took a visit to check out what you guys had done. I haven't been able to reconnect since.
I also cannot connect.
Just pinged BAF about it. He thinks the map is too large for our tiny server, and chunks have started falling out of the holes in the case where the fans go. Also, some of the chunks may have got caught in the fan, which is why everything is all shredded-like. Apologies if the hurricane-force winds destroyed your castle or tower. Anyways, I restarted the server manually. Maybe it's working now (I could log in).

I'm gonna mess with crap. Access might be more spotty than usual for the next hour or so.

The world is currently 111 MB on disk (du -hs --apparent-size world)
I've heard of server problems regarding huge maps, but they were talking about a 4gb world.
Yeah, 111MB sounds somewhat underwhelming.
I don't know if I pointed out yet how great I am at everything, but I deleted most of the backups we made of the maps. Yay! However, I did manage to recover a fair fraction of them, so I have 42 snapshots from scattered across the year. Now the levels are saved in a git repo. If anybody wants this pushed to them, let me know and I can set that up. The repo is 1.3 GB. You won't be able to pull yourself, sorry. Now I'm off to fix the map server.

Nope, the backups were all I deleted.

Does anyone know why there are hundreds of signs with words like "MobSpawner Spider" all over the place? BAF and me can't figure it out. Did someone with literally hundreds of hours go an do this? Is it a change in c10t?
The connection keeps timing out whenever I try to connect. Are there some maintenance problems?
I don't know why that was, but I had the same problem. I restarted the server and it's working again. Just post if you continue to have problems.
Whats the I.P for your server I'll come have a ganders?
The domain name is mc.baf.cc.
FatNinja, you can't come on the server until you've programmed your first game and published it to the Depot.
No jk, if we had that rule nobody would be allowed on the server
Yeah, you had me scared there. O_O
Me too. I was like, "Oh crap, program Tetris and add it to the Depot!"
Just grab something you've made in a MinorHack and put it in the depot
Going by that method I've already made this awesome game: http://cymonsgames.com/pinwheelpuzzle/
Though more seriously I've got this: http://www.allegro.cc/forums/thread/604019 (which I will obviously fix once I have the time )
/me adds al_hello_world to the depot.
If anyone else out there likes the maps that Minetographer makes (a la Tectonicus), but wants them as a single image file rather than as a collection of smaller images, I just wrote an Allegro program that stitches all the small images together into one large one.
It supports all three image formats that Minetographer produces, care of jpgalleg, loadpng and algif, however saving the larger .png and .gif images is very slow unfortunately. I noticed that algif is also producing images where every pixel is black, which I'll start another thread about soon.
The program uses a cutdown version of exgui.c for it's interface - simply just a list box for the worlds, and a quit button. It will automatically determine the location of the .Minetographer directory, and puts the images it creates in whatever directory it is run from.
The source (pretty ugly, but meh) is as follows:
Ooh, neat. I don't use the maps myself (laziness), but I can see how that would be useful to people who do.
... because I know someone else will.

I propose that we do this.
When do we take the medication?
Thats just creepy.
Minecraft 1.3 Beta is out. Server outdated.
Has anyone tried beds yet?
I hope the new map file format somehow reduces the load on the server.
EDIT: The new launcher keeps failing that it can't connect to minecraft.net. :/
Shame; I updated a bit ago. I'm glad they implemented that lighting mod as a standard feature; looks much better.
, I just got the DesertBus auction tagline.
And ouch, this new monitor needs to have it's colors adjusted badly, the background looks black. I always have this issue with a new driver anyway.
The bed is a nice touch, especially for single player. I got ambushed by a mob while sleeping (woke up, a zombie standing next to me), so sleep can be interrupted. Pretty nice.
Server updated. The maps won't work with the new format, but the new format's filenames are significantly more sensible.
Does that mean that we've started all over again?
Does that mean that we've started all over again?
No, he meant mcmap wont work.
Works smooth here. At least from what I've noticed.
I'm surprised you guys didn't lit up my wooden mansion while I was away. Specially after trolling you with my "treasure".
EDIT: Tomasu entered and my game black screened... And I don't see Tomasu any more.
You dropped off, then java crashed. Not the game. Java.
# java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: requested 32744 bytes for ChunkPool::allocate. Out of swap space?
Now I can't even start the game. It immediately dies with the same error, but for less memory (2k or less).
And I'm not only not out of swap, I'm not even close to being out of memory.
I wonder if this new format will prevent my computer from hanging? It's annoying to be playing and all of a sudden, the whole computer locks up, and I can't see why it did so.

I tried out SP and the framerate and loading seems to have improved for me. It might be a bit laggy the first time you convert tho.

Did anyone other than me ever find your "treasure"?
The big "evidence" at the place seems like it, though I don't know who was the "lucky" guy.

... oh dear God my mind went to a horrible place when reading that.
Oh don't worry too much, I was just talking about an empty chest that triggered 4 tnts exploding all around the poor sod who entered. So there's a big hole now at the treasure place, but the "lucky" fellow didn't leave a sign like Neil did.
I was just talking about an empty chest that triggered 4 tnts exploding all around the poor sod who entered.
O_o
I got in just now. Laggy as hell for me though ...
It was plenty fast for me while I was logged in. I was rather surprised. It didn't take 30 seconds or more for it to populate the chunks around me.
Yeah, I joined and it was fast and smooth for me. Dario came on momentarily and then 23. Then I quite cause I have to do the dishes and make supper.
I joined, and ended up finding a creeper in a cart. There's a hole in the station now as a result (though it seems the track didn't go anywhere)
Also, it seems broken.
I can't wait for the update that makes blocks a 10th of their current size.
Now I can't even start the game. It immediately dies with the same error, but for less memory (2k or less).

I've see this error before with Java, outside of minecraft. In my case, there was a memory ulimit on the user account in question, and Java wanted heap/stackspace larger than that.

Ah thanks for the hint, thats probably it. I setup a ulimit of like 2G for virtual address space per process. Its odd how it worked the first time, and now starting it at all dies.
Is this thread close to be the longest one now?
I'm guessing not even half the size of the soccer one. Probably dwarfed by a few religion ones too.
Yeah, we're not even close yet.
Was there anything over a thousand? Just for me to know when should I come back.
So I was finally able to log in with the standalone client...
It seems significantly smoother, even with Fancy Graphics and Smooth lighting enabled... I'll have to play more
I was playing quite a bit the last two days, and no lock ups on my computer.
One of these days I'll fix my IO issue.
I wonder how the iPhone version will work...
I wrote these down years ago The World Cup of 2006 thread had 1378 posts. The Team Chess thread lasted almost 11 months.
@CGames Thanks.. I'll know when to come back then. :p
So yea, I fell into someone's trap, and it didn't seem to go off too well or as planned.
Lawl traps.
I may log on again; I got a few neat ideas today that are simple enough ...
Ah thanks for the hint, thats probably it. I setup a ulimit of like 2G for virtual address space per process. Its odd how it worked the first time, and now starting it at all dies.
Glad to be of assistance for once.
Hmmm. All the servers I've connected to (including ours) I get an insane amount of lag and it takes forever to download terrain.
Single player works fine though.
EDIT: Tried again, working fine. I added a moon. Once I figure out how to make a decent mouth and eyes I'll put a little sign on the bottom saying "3 MORE DAYS M**********RS".
EDIT2: I lied; still crappy from my home comp. Which is odd, because my copy is up-to-date and my ping is fine ...
EDIT3: So I decided I need a Death Star and went hunting for sphere-plotting programs (which I also used to make the moon on our Allegro server). Here's my progress on a 60-diameter puppy.

EDIT4: I forget; can portals to the Nether be opened on our server? I need some fire to create appropriate eyes/mouth for my moon but the only thing that burns eternally is Netherrack ... I guess Glowstone would work too but same problem.
That is pure awesome =D
I wasn't aware portals to the nether worked on any server. But if they did, that would rock.
AFAIK, portals don't work in SMP yet.
Here's my progress on a 60-diameter puppy.
You have way too much free time my friend.
can portals to the Nether be opened on our server?
As far as I know, the Nether is not working yet on SMP servers.
EDIT: Heh, double beaten!
Well, that sucks. And it's not too much time to make; I've been working on it off-and-on for 10 minute spurts over about a week now ...

You should have made it out of Stone or Obsidian.
Meh. I have 5 chests full of Cobblestone, I work with what I got. If I do go a Death Star route, I'll probably make the main dish out of Stone.
Obsidian would be way too much work. I'm not that hardcore.
Why must school take up so much time? I could be building awesome stuff too! Waahhh!!!
The sad thing is, I may not have internet during Spring Break, when I'll have time to play.
Why must work take up so much time? And sap all of my computing desire for the day?
What is wrong with you? I could never sit down in front of a computer and have no desire to do anything with it. My problem is the usual: play over projects.
When you're a full time software developer, you want to do something besides sit at a computer even more when you get home.
I haven't really run into that issue yet. I'm sitting here at home coding right now. It's just C++ instead of C#.
I just get sick of staring at the screen. I need to get my lazy ass to the gym or something.
Buy a Bowflex.
I'll just take bambam's when he buys his guitar.
I understand both sides to the story. Sometimes I spend all day and all evening on the computer and enjoy every minute of it (usually, this results in me staying up way too late), but other times by the time I get home I have no energy to sit at a computer and watch TV instead (probably because for the past month I've stayed up way too late at night). Some nights I don't even have energy for that and go to bed at like 7pm... Microsoft software is mentally exhausting joke here. Honestly, it probably has more to do with the hours that I keep, and my eventual need to catch back up, but I'm sure that the stress of dealing with Microsoft's software doesn't help any.
I do intend to eventually get back into using my BowFlex, but I've been drained for the past few weeks. I'm so busy with things that I prioritize that I can't even find time to watch recorded TV shows or play video games... I hope that spring/summer will help to boost my energy/motivation. If that doesn't suffice then perhaps I should seek medical assistance.
As for the guitar, I'm rather torn still. While I do enjoy playing with my keyboard, I don't get as much use of it as I'd like (see above for justification). There's a chance that I'd use the guitar more often if the game makes it accessible to me, but even still there's a chance that I wouldn't be able to make time for it (see above). I'm waiting for ML to say that it's worth it. It sounds like I'll have to wait for restocking and order from multiple sites... It won't be pleasant getting a hold of the guitar and MIDI controller in Canada. That also means that I'll be purchasing them blindly.
Dum de dum de dum ....

16 circles to go. The stairs on the left are to coax some grass up so I can make a greenhouse floor.
Where's that building 23? I can never find it.
Also, is Cartography turned off? If that's the case, why not just do it once a day? That wouldn't cause as much lag like the last time.
What building? I'm making that thing up there in single player. I made a moon with a diameter of 10 on our server, but lately my connection to any server has pretty much been crap. So I can't share my goodies ... sad face.
Not sure if the Cartography comment was directed at me, I don't really use any mods ...
What building? I'm making that thing up there in single player.
So I was looking for that awesome thing all the time on the server when it was on your single player map?
Not sure if the Cartography comment was directed at me
Oh sorry, that's directed for BAF or CGames whenever they read it. It's a tool for rendering the map, the one used at mcmap.baf.cc. Though I just call it Cartography and the name of the program might be totally different.
If I could click on a chest and have it open in less than a minute, I'd totally do some sphere art on the shared server. I'd also need mountains of stone/cobblestone, mind you ...
Though I just call it Cartography and the name of the program might be totally different.
Yup. But that one is outdated now and won't work with the new map format.
Tectonicus works with the new format. Minetographer, which uses Tectonicus as it's rendering engine, still comes with the old version, but you can just rename the new Tectonicus .jar file and replace the one that Minetographer comes with.
Is Minetographer the best solution for us to use? I haven't done any research into it, but I can look into setting it up.
Is Minetographer the best solution for us to use? I haven't done any research into it, but I can look into setting it up.
Minetographer is just a GUI front-end for Tectonicus, so perhaps you should look at the latter instead if you're going to be automating. Tectonicus supports player positions and signs, but not POIs. I personally prefer its map format, which is isometric. Its format is rather large though. On the default settings, a map takes up 1.7Gb.

I ordered this shirt last week. When I get it I'm buying some new gym pants (bright green) and hitting the indoor track, or running outside if it's nice enough.
See how many people jump out of my way.
Tectonicus supports player positions and signs, but not POIs
POIs are currently implemented client-side, in javascript, we can probably do a similar tweak with Tectonicus.
Thanks for the info on that though, the output looks ... way nicer than the c10t one did. Though it doesn't appear to be open source, which sort of restricts mod-ability of it. I did some tweaking on the current mapper, not that it makes a difference anymore.
Oh hey, I got a decent connection for a change. Anyone got some cobblestone chests I can raid?
Oh hey, I got a decent connection for a change. Anyone got some cobblestone chests I can raid?
I had 2 double full chests but they got eaten in a rollback apparently. Probably when there were those server problems with the backup. Unless someone destroyed my 2 chests and carried out all that cobble.
Yeah, all my chests (but one) are empty too; I wondered what happened there ...
EDIT: Oh hey; a door that says "ABSOLUTELY NO UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY". Since its all caps, that's how I know it's sarcasm!
I take nothing. I'm more likely to do something stupid to get myself killed and lose whatever I'm carrying, so I just look at what everyone else does.
Considering the reason I died last time was because I was climbing some tower, mis-jumped and fell to my doom. If only I had landed in the water
My work on our server has begun. This one's a mere baby at a 40 block diameter:

This'll be my glass biodome. I may make orbiting floating structures too. I have a few ideas for a cluster of these things.
EDIT: Oh, hey, I just heard about Sandstone. If that's a thing, and if it ignores gravity (does it?) then I think I found my building material ...
Yep, it ignores gravity. I think it's 4x4 of sand.
Bah; connection from home still blows. Guess I'll build it up during spare time at work ...
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pound sand.

Does it even matter?

PS, Someone with admin powers please remove that bed!
Oops, sorry! Didn't think it'd be annoying. I was just testing out how cuddling with bambam would make the night skip instantly.
So, I have minecraft now (and yes, it crashes randomly with a black screen on any video setting, even within a dark mine looking at one block, but anyway) to avoid reading all 10 pages, is there an allegro minecraft server?
mc.baf.cc
Ground out the last 8 rings out of boredom. So it took me about a week and a half, working on and off ...
Almost there ...

Witness the power of this fully operational blocky station!

Anyway, now to give it some insides I guess. And a proper entrance. Connection to our server still blows, even off peak hours.
EDIT: By my math it took around 13,000 blocks. The hell. That can't be right ...
Wow ... some much time wasted while you could have been eating at a restaurant, drinking wine !

For some of us, it's the sitting at a restaurant that's a waste of time.
this minecraft sucks. The website is down every other day. The least you'd think they'd do given the money they must be raking in is create a mirror server or at least another server used only for authenticating.
Multiplayer is still impossible for me. I did manage to work my way through that huge wood cabin though; the interior design is actually quite cool. I like your inventive use of the stairs block.
I just completed my version of the Colossus of Rhodes on my single player game. The harbour it is standing in is actually 100% artificial as well.

I like that Colossus Also, yeah, Dario's wooden mansion is very nicely decorated. I particularly appreciate the use of the unworked wood blocks to make the parquet floor.
Its very nice yes. But, I know what is going through everybody's heads. When are we going to gather up and finally do it?
I just built a fortress, to guard the "shipping routes."
I've only completed the structure for now (walls, floors and doors). I'll get around to decorating it at some point. This is how it looks by night:
{"name":"603574","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/9\/9\/9980f8d365ecc5c858394ca6ea8f683d.png","w":854,"h":480,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/9\/9\/9980f8d365ecc5c858394ca6ea8f683d"}
As you can see from this map, the passage its guarding is the only sea route from the southern sea to the northern ocean:
{"name":"603576","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/b\/a\/ba4ed841cfc52804791a36a977c8e3fd.jpg","w":985,"h":697,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/b\/a\/ba4ed841cfc52804791a36a977c8e3fd"}
The immediate area of the fortress, magnified:
{"name":"603575","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/0\/5\/05224df18c1e00b91291de06f527cf50.jpg","w":1468,"h":848,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/0\/5\/05224df18c1e00b91291de06f527cf50"}
And an obligatory video tour:
I just completed my version of the Colossus of Rhodes on my single player game.

Ask BAF for an hour we can all log in, make a backup, we login at that time. I'll personally light it up and record it. This, of course, assuming we're going to go the last backup, otherwise you can say goodbye to your house at the side.
I don't even know how that house is standing. Need to build 2 more pillars.
BTW: DOORBELL AWESOMENESS!!!
What does the doorbell do? Lag earns me a click sound and nothing else. Is it hooked up to a note block or something?
Yes and its hidden away quite sneaky. When you hit the button... It goes... here it comes...
DING-DONG
Dario, I'll trade Fort V for your Wooden Mansion!

P.S. The flint and steel in my hand means nothing.
I tried to use the railway system, but I couldn't get it to work for me.
Looks like the connection wants to cooperate today. I got the sandstone started, and noticed some kind soul left me a half chest of cobblestone. Sorry; already decided to roll with sandstone on this one, but thanks. Anyone want to leave some sand in there that'd be even more appreciated.
The only time I used a rail cart I had someone pushing me all the way - is there another way how to use them?

You can use a powered cart, or cart boosters that can propel you down a long track. boosters are faster. But can be a pain to set up.

Do boosters work with powered carts? That would be sweet.
I have yet to implement a roller coaster. I should try one tonight. All these powered cars and boosters are interesting ...
Ask BAF for an hour we can all log in, make a backup, we login at that time.
Name a time (within reason). Preferably during a weekend or evening (GMT-5), so I can log in and see.
Tomorrow is Friday... Or should we do it on Saturday? Definitely need to open a new thread to announce should a glorious moment.
Ugh, the server is making me want to kill a puppy. Got killed from nothing, lost everything (important) in my inventory, getting tons of glitches ... think I'll just stick with the single-player for now because this is retarded. >_<
Even I had unbearable lag when I connected today (all alone) and I haven't really had issues before.
Possibly related to the woot off? It's over now, but it may have been causing lag issues.
Has anybody been able to play Minecraft in fullscreen mode?
Possibly related to the woot off? It's over now, but it may have been causing lag issues.
I get semi regular notifications of connections to facebook and google failing from my VM. Even sometimes DNS requests fail. I think maybe you have a bw/cpu issue.
Has anybody been able to play Minecraft in fullscreen mode?
I think it was F11 or something. I admit it's quite inmersive, so be careful.
Name a time (within reason). Preferably during a weekend or evening (GMT-5), so I can log in and see.
How about tomorrow(March 12th) at GMT-5 19:00(7 pm)? That would be 9pm for me. Or earlier too if you want. If you can't get in at that time Vanneto, let me know, I can login earlier as well.
Has anybody been able to play Minecraft in fullscreen mode?
I do sometimes, but only when exploring, not for any crafting.
Minecraft in fullscreen sucks balls on linux with a widescreen display. Stuff is all warped, and its even worse with dual displays. It spans all screens then
mc.baf.cc keeps timing out for me?
I don't know the bandwidth but my NAS is a webserver and it's on 24 hours, but I have no idea how to configure the mineserver or how to install it on my NAS
I get semi regular notifications of connections to facebook and google failing from my VM.
Sorry, the cable to your VM wasn't plugged in all the way. SHould be virtually perfect now.
Sorry, the cable to your VM wasn't plugged in all the way. SHould be virtually perfect now.
A cable to a virtual machine? You have individual ethernet ports per vm?
No. I'm trolling you. But the last time I mentioned ethernet cords in this thread, I was referencing the actual email message my DC sent me.
No. I'm trolling you. But the last time I mentioned ethernet cords in this thread, I was referencing the actual email message my DC sent me.
Heh. So did you figure out the problem? I even use my own bind daemon, so DNS shouldn't fail, yet it still does, I assume when it tries to connect to the root servers, and can't.
Possibly related to the woot off? It's over now, but it may have been causing lag issues.
That shouldn't have affected it. Recall that the box was under fairly low load due to using ec2.
I think maybe you have a bw/cpu issue.
I don't see how either of those could be an issue, the box is usually under fairly low load. I'm leaning more towards blaming XenServer - we've had more problems with that shit... I'm inclined to blame either that, or our Vyatta router VM - Vyatta is another steaming heap of shit.
How about tomorrow(March 12th) at GMT-5 19:00(7 pm)? That would be 9pm for me. Or earlier too if you want. If you can't get in at that time Vanneto, let me know, I can login earlier as well.
Works for me if everyone else wants to do it.
I'll log in some minutes. Everyone who wants to watch my wooden mansion burn are free to come.
I'm there.
Wow, I'm late, did the burning start already?
Nope, BAF was never on-line to make a backup first, so it didn't happen.
Apologies, I misread and thought that he said last night at 7pm - I was on around then last night and saw nobody on, so I just got off.
We can aim for another time, and I promise to read better this time.
Shouldn't we also specify timezone since this community is so widespread?
Just specify times/dates in GMT, that should do the trick.
Maybe if you had read, oh say, five posts back, you would have seen that timezone was specified (as well as time in GMT).
The specific day was also mentioned...
Maybe you can at GMT-5 19:00 today? (Sunday March 13th )
Hehe, yes. Is that in a half hour? Or an hour and a half? I'm all disoriented with regards to other timezones, because we just switched to DST.
Michigan went from -5 to -4 because of DST
Same for me in NY then... so in an hour and a half then.
Yeah, I can confirm to you it's in an hour, so don't worry.
Well that was fun, a couple hours of pillaging and briefing everything. We burned everything that would burn (Darios house, Tomasu's pagoda, a forest, a bunch of other stuff) and then we started spawning in TNT to blow up everything that wouldn't. It was grand fun, and the map was utterly unrecognizable when we were finished.
Dario and Miquel both recorded events, so hopefully they'll post to youtube or something. At any rate, the server has been restored to its pre-pillaging glory.
My video(s) should appear Tuesday, assuming RL doesn't pop something up on me (as the case always seems to be when I promise something to the internet)
I finally got on the other day, and it's an impressive map
On a different subject, I've failed in following all the different variants of instructions (I'm on the latest beta 1.3.something), can somebody let me know how to install the mod (Windows) that lets you float at any level to speed up building.
Cheers.
I must know... did my half-finished castle get blown up? And if so, was it caught on video?
We were talking about it but I went to sleep before. I don't know if the pillagers continued blowing up the server after that. :X

Does this even work on SMP? Something tells me it won't.
I must know... did my half-finished castle get blown up? And if so, was it caught on video?
I have no idea. I don't think we blew it up. We'll have another mineageddon at some point though, and we can do it then.
Thats cool. I kinda wish you guys blew up my glass tunnel.
As well as Sevalecan's two big Towers.

On that note... I built a hydroslide! Oh, and a wooden house next to it that's the base of operations while I complete rest of the fun park.

I need to find that later, whenever I have time to play again.
I need to find that later, whenever I have time to play again.
It's in a single player world. When I've done a bit more stuff on it, I'll upload it.
Cool. Might be something someone could build on the server later.
How do you get a access to write, is it just /j guest?
I think the allegro world is missing some large 8-bit old-school statues
As well as Sevalecan's two big Towers.
Obsidian is unaffected by TNT. We tried to blow up my creeper wall in the front of my cave-house - that whole mountain was one huge crater, the only thing left standing was my wall.
How do you get a access to write, is it just /j guest?
To write to what?
Thats cool. I kinda wish you guys blew up my glass tunnel.
We did. It just wasn't recorded. Check out the video at about 8:30, and you'll see sevalecan laughing and saying it was an accident. We were blowing up your tunnel while BAF and miquel were recording blowing up my little wooden bridge.
Cool video btw, I'm anxious to see part number 2!
EDIT: I updated the OP with the screenshots and videos related to the server.

That doesn't actually close the thread.
To write to what?
Did I write that? I meant to be able to edit the map. When I log on it's non-editable.
Did I write that? I meant to be able to edit the map. When I log on it's non-editable.
If you mean the first area, yes, it is only editable by OPs. Try getting away from the spawn point and see if you can break the blocks.
How can I login? When I enter the server name in Minecraft, it's unable to access the server. I'm getting a "connection timed out" error.
Or am I wrongly entering mf.baf.cc???
Or am I wrongly entering mf.baf.cc???
Well, you just wrote mf.baf.cc instead of mc.baf.cc. Not sure if that's related tho.
Fixed that, but now I'm getting a "Failed to login: Bad login" error... help?
it'll probably be the woeful minecraft authentication servers. They go down all the time.
Is there a way to know when/if those authentication servers are back online?
If you can't use the stand alone launcher is a good sign.
I'm in now so it's working
But it's in normal game mode, last time I was in I'm sure 'b' worked and had all blocks available and always daytime.
...wolves!
@Lennylen: which texture pack are you using?
@Lennylen: which texture pack are you using?
Thanks
Does anyone have any suggestion about how to stop animals from moving the booster carts, which ruins the effect? They're not a problem in my subway system, but I'm building a scenic track as well, and they're constantly getting in the way.
I've found the biggest stash of easily mineable sand anywhere if anyone needs it, it goes on for miles and is as flat as anything. I've even built a shelter for the night
-982x, -59z
I would love to farm it for sandstone/glass ... if the server will play nice for a freaking change. Anyone saintly enough to drop some in my chest will receive as thanks all the items currently in my inventory! (read: nothing)
I just removed a large chunk. Like 10 stacks so far
You do all know the sand/gravel mining trick, right?
continue...
I'm guessing he means the trick of mining the bottom block, and quickly replacing it with a torch. All the rest of the blocks that fall on it will be mined automatically.
I don't find it to be much faster, but it does save on shovels.
so it's more like finding new ways of hiding the tedium like when you used to do lines at school. But that wouldn't work at my spot mentioned, it's more horizontal than vertical. And there's a fair bit of shallow coal too, which is handy.
I only need 816 more sand blocks to finish my structure
Well, a few more as I'd like to make a glass walkway.
I would probably mine 10 times as much of sand if they hadn't nerfed click mining.
And the trick you're mentioning didn't work on SMP when we tried it with miquelfire as soon as the server started. The blocks broke, but you couldn't pick 'em up.
It works for me on SMP. If you have a huge sand area where you can dig down ~10 or so blocks, its fairly efficient to mine that way.
It works for me on SMP. If you have a huge sand area where you can dig down ~10 or so blocks, its fairly efficient to mine that way.
The areas I started working with were only 3-4 blocks deep, but a very wide area. I'm also not very good at doing anything that quick in minecraft, so I'd probably not get the torch in there fast enough.
Hold left mouse until the sand/gravel block is mined, then immediately right click to place it. You have a fair amount of time to do it - at least a few hundred milliseconds. If you have any level of dexterity in your hands beyond that of an 80 year old, it shouldn't be that difficult.

You forgot the step of changing from shovel to torch.
If you have any level of dexterity in your hands beyond that of an 80 year old, it shouldn't be that difficult.
I've tried countless times, and I simply can't do it.
Just dig with the torch.
My client is acting up again, crashing and whatnot, cant even stay in the game for more than a few minutes.
Well, I'll try again tomorrow, hope it'll work.
What gnolam said.
People make shovels for sand?!
In seriousness, I was actually able to log on and do some work despite the server's best efforts, and all the donated sand has now been applied, making one quadrant actually kinda close to being finished. I'll farm sand if the connection improves (is this some known thing? I swear things were fine up to a specific patch day) or just keep applying what I find in the chest.
People make shovels for sand?!
And gravel. It goes a lot faster with a shovel than with a pick.
I'm pretty sure the pick on gravel is actually slower than the bare hand ...
I hadn't actually considered mining sand/gravel with the torch. I'll try it next time I need some sand for glass.
Would someone please remind me of the address to this wonderful server? Thank you.
It's just mc.baf.cc. Type it in and it will work. Unfortunately, I haven't been on in a while. Partly due to lag, and partly due to me working on a different server for a while. It's not as fun though since mobs are off.
I made a gold shovel the other day. It didn't last very long.
LennyLen mentioned uploading his hydro-slide a few message up, how do you do that?
LennyLen mentioned uploading his hydro-slide a few message up, how do you do that?
You'll need software for recording the screen. I use Camtasia Studio myself, but anything will do. Then, once you have the video, just upload it to YouTube.
Which reminds me that I forgot to do that recording!
edit:
Here it is:
ah, I thought you meant you were working on the slide on your single player then were going to upload bits of it to a server
ah, I thought you meant you were working on the slide on your single player then were going to upload bits of it to a server
Actually, now that you mention it, I was also meaning that I would upload my world directory.
What would be nice is a mod that lets you define shapes of blocks and place them, e.g. 5x5 grid of stone, assuming you have enough resources. It would speed up creating repeating stuff no end, like walls and such.
And give people some of their life back? Ha!
Next you'll suggest presets for walls, doors, tunnels, mining...
At the time I thought you meant a new type of enemy mob, which would have been boring. But yeah, beaten.
I'm pretty sure the pick on gravel is actually slower than the bare hand ..
Pretty sure it's not.
And as far as gold tools, they're about as useless as wood (or was it stone?) tools, only much more costly. Gold sucks.
Gold = wood for tools (besides costs)
Gold really isn't that expensive if you consider that its mostly useless and you're best off using it for decoration. I've got a stack or two that I haven't even bothered smelting. No point.
By "much more costly" I meant "much more rare." Being that you have to mine for it, rather than just chop it down.
Here's a nice view from my statue, it's at the highest point of 129.

I've made a new video: Journeys by Rail - Minecraft
edit:
I started playing on the server. I'd just crafted some diamond tools and started building a tower when a server glitch transported me into mid-air, where I plunged to my death.
I'm still debating whether or not to bother logging back in to finish things off.
I've made a new video
That looks great. Is it on your local machine or baf server?
We should keep a list of co-ordinates for good places to visit in the allegro/baf minecraft site.

Well, I've started doing stuff around -443, 814. I wouldn't yet call it a good place to visit though.

Don't worry about stuff like that, I've stupidly died many times and lost full suits of diamond armor and tools. Playing on SMP is not really about survival or having lots of mats at your disposal, it's about building cool stuff that everyone can see and enjoy. Even better if you find someone around to cooperate.

It's not so much the losing stuff, since that's easy to replace. I'm more worried that the connection I have at the moment just isn't good enough. I'm connecting wirelessly to a router that's about 50m away, and I think it's making the lag too great.
It's extremely difficult to interact with the world, as even if I'm alone on the server, most of the time, the bricks I remove instantly respawn again.
Heh. When night is falling, start smelting stuff and hop into bed. Check your furnace when your character wakes up. Surprise!
Arrrrgh. I was experimenting with having a fancy column of lava, surrounded by glass, in my base.
I accidentally placed the lava one block higher than I wanted. EVERYTHING BURNED.
...on the bright side, at least only the upper section was wooden, and the fire didn't reach the forest.
Oh, I totally missed the last video! Cool, the aftermath part was great. When are we doing the next mineaggedon?
