Not much. Unless you're very smart. Now if you focus on listening and just glance at the subs just to get a general thought, and you don't think literaly about the dialiect, well, you could learn stuff by acquisition. But also in SSC defense, English subs are often TERRIBLE, so I listen to the Japanese because otherwise I'll hate the movie just because of the bad english voice acting |

There are often times where characters will say only one word or two words. You can learn a bit from those scenes and then learn more by using those words in longer sentences to figure out other words. That's what I did/do... |

My estimate is that I learned 120 japanese words from anime alone (I have an incomplete list), and I never took any japanese classes... if it keeps up like that, I'll end up learning the whole language. About Death and Rebirth: if you include End of Evangelion, and the Director's Cuts for episode 21-24, there are no new scenes at all. Rebirth is worthless, it's just half of End of Evangelion. Death is a nice huge recap, if you're into that kind of thing... just make sure that you watch Death True^2. On a side note, ADV licensed Evangelion Platinum, which is almost the same as Evangelion Renewal, much higher quality video/audio remasters of the original cels. Unfortunately, they don't own the license to the End of Evangelion movie, which is the reason they had to rename "Renewal" into "Platinum." _____________________________ |

I liked it but like most anime you don't really know what the hell is going on, it all gets laid out slowly throughout. I know some japanese but yeah listening to it in Japanese helps you to learn how to pronounce it better, like 1 ichi which I think they prounouned it like "each" or "itch" than how I would pronounce it if I had not known. Pen-Pen was coo too. ___________________________________ |

Nvm, read your post wrong. Edit: I've found that if you're biligual and know say, spanish or french or something, you can pronounce japanese better. This is because unlike english, all these other languages are phonetic and have similar pronounciations for there letters( which is why it's harder for a american to say a japanese are than for a spanish person to do a japanese r. Spanish and japanese r's are similar.) |

SSC: No, japanese 'r' is a sound between our 'r' and 'l' (spanish speaker). However, their vowels are exactly like ours -R |

Adol: no, it's more along the lines of Japanese pronunciation is almost the same as Spanish, so if you can speak Spanish you'll find Japanese pronunciation very easy. -- |

Indeed, japanese pronunciation is very similar to spanish. However, the sentence structure is more similar to english. In example, in japanese you put the modifiers before the noun as in english, while in spanish we put the modifiers after the noun (putting it before the noun is possible but, at least down here, hardly used except in poetry). -- |

What about Full Metal Alchemist? I watched it and for me it was one of the best stuff I have ever seen... and it was in Japanese with Spanish subtitles, so I finally got to see some japanese cartoons in the original language (I think that's best). As for the language, romanized japanese is pronounced practically the same as spanish, so that's quite a help to learn japanese for spanish-speaking people Here is a link with a good site I found about learning japanese... ----- |

Yea...the 120 different letters and the 3,000 common kanji..... Thats the site I've been using for a while to learn japanese heh. |
