I've been getting nostalgic lately and I've want to find this old anime I watched when I was a little kid( around 8 or 9 maybe). I don't remember the name or any of the characters but I can remember the general story and some scenes( hope that helps).
The intro had a scene of tanks on a highway fighting this huge bug( think ultralisk from SC) and then the highways collapsing.
The general story was that an alien had come and destroyed human civilization leaving only a few survivors here and there. The leader of the aliens had his base in orbit around Earth and wore a black robotic suit. Somehow, the survivors had robotic suits( not mecha, just robotic suits) that gave the wearer super strength and the whole deal, they used these suits to fight the aliens( not sure if they fought bugs or other suits). But I do know that the alien leader would capture humans and enslave them to fight. He would stick them in suits just like the resistance( he enslaved them on his space hq and put em on earth).
I only remember 2 scenes, so I'll try to be as specific as I can be.
Humans are fighting the aliens with no hope of winning in the ruins of a city, so one fighter( in a pink suit) tells her friends to get away and she self-destructs killing everything around her.
Another scene is where the humans get their hands on a nuke and plan on using on the alien hq( in space) but the fighters urge them not to because some humans are being held there. They somehow manage to get into the space base and find there comrades who are in the process of being brainwashed and put into suits. They encounter the leader which wears an all black suit( once again, robotic suits which are human size).
I think this anime came out in the 80s but the animation was really good for it's time. I hope someone can give me some clues T_T, thanks,
Please tell me you are not thinking of Mighty Morping(?) Power Rangers
It's the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, no doubt .
Was the human civilization almost destroyed by aliens in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers? I don't believe it was...
Well nor was it a cartoon/anime. It just sounds a lot like MMPR Robotech maybe? I dunno I didn't watch a lot of anime in the 80's.
Was the human civilization almost destroyed by aliens in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers?
Well now that you mention it ... No... but they did fight giant lobsters and the henchmen/women always liped japanese while they spoke english
Robotech didn't have bugs now did it
It took place only on earth(except for when they were in the alien base which is in orbit) if that helps any.
Blue Gender?
http://www.asylum-anime.com/posterscrolls/ws_bluegender_1665.jpg
(Nah, can't be it. Much, much too recent.)
Anime program with big robot suits?
Damn, can't think of a single one!
Not blue gender, it came out around the same time as robotech.
Gundam Seed?
[url http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,1050,mnuubb,gundam_seed.html]
Neon Genesis?
[url http://www.lwhy.clara.net/nge/]
I'm putting my money on Neon Genesis.
Not Space Battleship Yamato a.k.a. Starblazers, was it? The plot is nowhere near what you described from what I know, but it's from about the same era...
Edit: Gundam Seed is from 2002. Back in the 1980s, all we had was the original Mobile Suit Gundam... And Neon Genesis Evangelion is vastly different from what SSC described.
Stop .... you're making me want to run out and buy a bunch of anime DVD's
I never watched anime as a child so I wouldn't know... I'm just giving suggestions to what I think sounds like what he's describing
The synopsis reminds me of an early 90's cartoon called ExoSquad. Not anime, but it sort of fits the description from what I remember.
Not Space Battleship Yamato, X-G. And not exo-squad either, I'm pretty sure it was anime and not some american cartoon.
ST: Stop embarrasing yourself . None of the anime you said have human sized suits. Remember I said suits and bugs, not giant mecha. The thing is, I don't really remember seeing the bugs anywhere but the intro. I just remember the humans fighting other suits( enslaved humans I think maybe...).
Is there a site that lists all anime that was dubbed and shown on american tv during the 90s?
The Guyver?
{"name":"shadowguyver.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/5\/6\/5652a9802bd8bb53dad960aa6f450fb1.jpg","w":270,"h":342,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/5\/6\/5652a9802bd8bb53dad960aa6f450fb1"}
The description doesn't match.
Hey I found a list of anime shows. Not sure if that's what your looking for but maybe it's on this list. If not then try searching google for 'anime +alien bug robot' or something along those lines.
It's not Gatchaman is it? Tekkaman?
Here's a link that lists some 70's and 80's anime: http://www.animenation.net/news/askjohn.php?id=275
My last guess: Tekkaman Blade a.k.a Teknoman? (Addendum: Exhaustive research found me this. Didn't see the above post. )

(More research makes me almost certain this is it. Hard work pays off!)
Someone else pointed me to tekkaman as well, that's probally the best choice...I need to see the intro to know for sure( also need a lot more screen shots). I'll go google for some images now.
I think it may be it but I need to see the intro to be sure(the pink suit looks like it may be it)...
Thanks a lot kitty and X-G!!
Thundercats! It's got to be...
....No.
power puff girls!
Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats HO!!
What? Oh fine Here ya go:
Here's our hero
Sounds like he is talking about Gunbuster to me. But the only problem is that Gunbuster was only a 6 episode thing and spans 3 dvds now. But the storyline sounds identical to what you said. These are the only 80s animes I could find:
Ronin Warriors is cool.
Not gunbusters, X-G already found it people. No need to look anymore until I can prove X-G wrong( don't see how I'll do that).
Yeah, seems like Tekkaman Blade. It was played through USA Network, I used to get up at 9 o'clock on saturdays to watch it.
I used to get up at six o' clock to watch saturday morning cartoons. Beat that.
5.
I don't watch TV, beat that!;)
Was the human civilization almost destroyed by aliens in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers? I don't believe it was...
Hey, it's only fiction!
Not gunbusters, X-G already found it people. No need to look anymore until I can prove X-G wrong( don't see how I'll do that).
I know that -_-. I need to see the intro and several episodes to know for sure and I can't do that. I can't find any eps on animefantasia or animesuki. And it isn't out on dvd either.
USA and japanese intros are very different. You will have to check both to see if it is indeed what you are looking for.
I want to get an anime now... can anyone recommend a good one, I like lots of action... what about Neon Genesis? It looks pretty cool.
NGE is one of the best anime series ever. The end is really disappointing, but you have the movies that were made to "replace" the original ending.
There are lots. Cowboy Bebop, NGE, Berserk, Outlaw Star, Hellsing, Witch Hunter Robin, Record of Lodoss War, Escaflowne, Rahxephon, Ghost in the Shell, Blue Gender are a few that come to mind that are decently action oriented.
Heh I guess it depends on the price, I'm looking at under 30 bucks here.... so maybe Ghost in the Shell if NGE is too expensive
Well, NGE is an OVA (I don't remember the number of chapters, but I remember seeing a package with al the chapters on DVD and they where about 8 DVD's), while Ghost in the Shell is just one film. So if you look at price, then get Ghost in the Shell.
The old NGE boxset was over $150. You might be able to get it cheap now that some people are selling their old copies off to get the new special editions.
Good single OVA/movie animes are less common. Ninja Scroll and Princess Mononoke are good.
My votes in order of least gory to most gory:
Puni puni poemi (comedy) <---
Escaflowne <---
Cowboy Bebop <---
Princess Mononoke <---
Ghost in the shell <---
Roureni Kenshin OVA <--- :-/
Berserk <--- :-X :-X :-X
There are others, but these are my top choices.
I'm now watching Ninja Scroll. The battles are good and there's plenty of action, but the story seems to be null (I've only watched the 5 first episodes, so maybe it gets better).
If you want to see how this (<-- see avatar) little rabit-like thing transforms into a spaceship, then you can watch Tenchi Muyo It's a good weird/action/"romantic"/humour anime (romantic is inside quotation marks because it's not really serious, it's mostly used for humour). Though I've heard a little of the English dub and it's horrible
I'm happy that Catalan anime dubs are very good in general
I am watching Record of the Lodoss War, You are under Arrest, and Slayers. Not bad at all.
samurai champloo for the win!
don't listen to those fools.
My favorite animes:
Comedy: School Rumble, Azumanga Daioh, FLCL, Chobits, Jungle wa itsumo Hale nochi Guu, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!
Serious: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kino no Tabi, Elfen Lied, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Air TV, Grave of the Fireflies
I'm not really into action shows... but try Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Elfen Lied if you want lots of bloody, nudity, and a nice scifi story. But not that much action.
He's talking about anime he can buy from stores people, don't name anime you can only get online ><!
I got NGE vol. 1 Platinum... there is 6 to the set but individually they are pretty cheap. Actually if I understand correctly there are actually 7 since they redid episode 22 and 23. The vol. 6 DVD says it has both the origional and directors cut of the last three episodes... but I don't think it's the alternate ending. Oh well I'll be enjoying the series hopefully while eating chinese
The new ending is in the movie, "The End of Evangelion" and it's very good in my opinion. Don't forget to get "Death And Rebirth" as well, it's a collection of scenes and some that aren't shown on the dvds.
Heh my dilemma now is which audio track to watch it on
Be a man, watch it in japanese with subs! Learn some japanese that way
Learn some japanese that way
Not much. Unless you're very smart.
The grammar is essentially backwards, so if you read and listen at the same time, the words you hear are seldom what you're reading.
Now if you focus on listening and just glance at the subs just to get a general thought, and you don't think literaly about the dialiect, well, you could learn stuff by acquisition.
Regardless what you decide on watching, enjoy it.
But also in SSC defense, English subs are often TERRIBLE, so I listen to the Japanese because otherwise I'll hate the movie just because of the bad english voice acting .
There are often times where characters will say only one word or two words. You can learn a bit from those scenes and then learn more by using those words in longer sentences to figure out other words. That's what I did/do...
My estimate is that I learned 120 japanese words from anime alone (I have an incomplete list), and I never took any japanese classes... if it keeps up like that, I'll end up learning the whole language.
About Death and Rebirth: if you include End of Evangelion, and the Director's Cuts for episode 21-24, there are no new scenes at all. Rebirth is worthless, it's just half of End of Evangelion. Death is a nice huge recap, if you're into that kind of thing... just make sure that you watch Death True^2.
On a side note, ADV licensed Evangelion Platinum, which is almost the same as Evangelion Renewal, much higher quality video/audio remasters of the original cels. Unfortunately, they don't own the license to the End of Evangelion movie, which is the reason they had to rename "Renewal" into "Platinum."
I liked it but like most anime you don't really know what the hell is going on, it all gets laid out slowly throughout. I know some japanese but yeah listening to it in Japanese helps you to learn how to pronounce it better, like 1 ichi which I think they prounouned it like "each" or "itch" than how I would pronounce it if I had not known. Pen-Pen was coo too.
Nvm, read your post wrong.
Edit: I've found that if you're biligual and know say, spanish or french or something, you can pronounce japanese better. This is because unlike english, all these other languages are phonetic and have similar pronounciations for there letters( which is why it's harder for a american to say a japanese are than for a spanish person to do a japanese r. Spanish and japanese r's are similar.)
SSC: No, japanese 'r' is a sound between our 'r' and 'l' (spanish speaker). However, their vowels are exactly like ours .
and know say, spanish or french or something, you can pronounce japanese better.
I think it's more along the lines of if you have spent time learning another language before you got too old and your brain got too set in English, then you can still adjust your speech to the point of sounding like a native speaker.
For the record, Roger Wilco sounds somewhat like: Lajah Wiruko.
Adol: no, it's more along the lines of Japanese pronunciation is almost the same as Spanish, so if you can speak Spanish you'll find Japanese pronunciation very easy.
Indeed, japanese pronunciation is very similar to spanish. However, the sentence structure is more similar to english. In example, in japanese you put the modifiers before the noun as in english, while in spanish we put the modifiers after the noun (putting it before the noun is possible but, at least down here, hardly used except in poetry).
... while Ghost in the Shell is just one film
"Ghost in the Shell" is not just one film! There is "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence" which looks awesome. They also made a series out of it and it's also great.
GITS: Stand Alone Complex is out in SunCoast...
What about Full Metal Alchemist? I watched it and for me it was one of the best stuff I have ever seen... and it was in Japanese with Spanish subtitles, so I finally got to see some japanese cartoons in the original language (I think that's best).
As for the language, romanized japanese is pronounced practically the same as spanish, so that's quite a help to learn japanese for spanish-speaking people I'm considering learning it in the near future, the language features seem pretty neat, even tough one has to learn how to read and write those letters...
Here is a link with a good site I found about learning japanese...
Yea...the 120 different letters and the 3,000 common kanji.....
Thats the site I've been using for a while to learn japanese heh.
Do you have more sites related to the language?
As for the language, romanized japanese is pronounced practically the same as spanish
Yeah that helps a lot indeed. The Hepburn system (the most popular romaji) uses spanish vowels and english consonants, in the way of pronounciation I mean.
Do you have more sites related to the language?
I've been slacking so I don't know anymore. After learning the hiragana and numbers, seeing the katakana turned me off, heh.
ftp://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo (or ftp://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html for a page with the information about what each of the file has).
Thanks RB, I will try to look at it
Indeed, japanese pronunciation is very similar to spanish
My Japanese teacher married a spanish guy. Coincidence? I think not!!
