Guess this is worth an off-topic thread. -- |

Can we get it yet? (I've looked at alleg.sourceforge.net) or is it on CVS? |

Yes, check the Allegro Development forum, the Allegro 4.2.0 beta thread. -- |

The "Allegro 4.2 Beta" link there is broken, and the Allegro link points here instead of the official allegro site -- |

I click that link and it gives me a paypal login |

That is because Firefox cannot find the link, throws an "I am lucky" search, and goes to Paypal. Surprised me as well Reported the link, hope they will fix it, though as I said, most people reading Gamasutra are bright enough to fix the link themselves -- |

Hmm... I think you cannot use https if you are not already logged in. So, I would go for the http instead of the https version of the URL. -- |

http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=317158 If you change it to http or https, I think that you might overlook the missing colon ':'. |

I hereby declare my intention to immediately go outside and fart in the general direction of whoever put "hobbyist" in there. |

Yeah, it's like grab.com using "homemade" instead of "indie". |

Are there any commercial games (big ones) made with Allegro? |

Daniel said: I hereby declare my intention to immediately go outside and fart in the general direction of whoever put "hobbyist" in there. Hahaha. I noticed the "hobbyist" bit, too. It kinda sticks out. At least they mention Allegro, though! I did a full-text, comprehensive news search for "sdl". Only one article came up, and wasn't even relevant. |

Gamasutra is a professional site, unlike Allegro.cc or Gamedev (in the focus, I mean, not the look ;-)). When you sign on there, you can upload your resume and read and apply for jobs in the professional game industry (in example, currently there are offers from Atari, Activision, Sony, Rockstar and Midway, between hundreds others). Most times, the articles they post come from professional tools which cost some hundreds of dollars (in example, Meqon SDK, Meshbox Design, Zygote Human anatomy, etc). In such environment, the mention that Allegro is a hobbyist project (which is true, by all means, even though there are two or three professional games, I remember a baseball simulator and the Mythic Blades fighting game, plus all the shareware ones), can both attract and reject a number of readers. -- |

Wow. About it saying hobbyist - well, game programming for me is a hobby. Not that I've actually had time to do any lately... I'd say it's fairly accurate, although `amateur' may have been more accurate. |

Heh, who knew that Gamasutra cared? I didn't expect that at all. I always thought Allegro slid under their radar. |

Gamasutra isn't for students I see... |

Hmm, I don't remember it being that troublesome. It's really worth it, though. They've got some great articles. |
