Guess this is worth an off-topic thread.
Can we get it yet? (I've looked at alleg.sourceforge.net) or is it on CVS?
Yes, check the Allegro Development forum, the Allegro 4.2.0 beta thread.
The "Allegro 4.2 Beta" link there is broken, and the Allegro link points here instead of the official allegro site
Well, I didn't post the information
I guess most will understand what is wrong with http://https//sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=317158 (Gamasutra is not a place for newbies, really). I will see if there is a way to contact them to fix the link. Though pointing to Allegro.cc is not a bad option.

I click that link and it gives me a paypal login
That is because Firefox cannot find the link, throws an "I am lucky" search, and goes to Paypal. Surprised me as well
Reported the link, hope they will fix it, though as I said, most people reading Gamasutra are bright enough to fix the link themselves
Matthew could say if he gets some visitants from there.
Hmm... I think you cannot use https if you are not already logged in. So, I would go for the http instead of the https version of the URL.
YOu can, I just did.
i changed the https to http and i got microsoft.com.
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=317158
Or
For lazier people
Goes to the changelog.
If you change it to http or https, I think that you might overlook the missing colon ':'.
Industry news?
"industry" feels wrong...
I hereby declare my intention to immediately go outside and fart in the general direction of whoever put "hobbyist" in there.
Well, what should they call it...
But I agree that hobbyist gives an amateur feeling.
Yeah, it's like grab.com using "homemade" instead of "indie".
Are there any commercial games (big ones) made with Allegro?
I hereby declare my intention to immediately go outside and fart in the general direction of whoever put "hobbyist" in there.
Hahaha. I noticed the "hobbyist" bit, too. It kinda sticks out.
At least they mention Allegro, though! I did a full-text, comprehensive news search for "sdl". Only one article came up, and wasn't even relevant.
Gamasutra is a professional site, unlike Allegro.cc or Gamedev (in the focus, I mean, not the look ;-)). When you sign on there, you can upload your resume and read and apply for jobs in the professional game industry (in example, currently there are offers from Atari, Activision, Sony, Rockstar and Midway, between hundreds others).
Most times, the articles they post come from professional tools which cost some hundreds of dollars (in example, Meqon SDK, Meshbox Design, Zygote Human anatomy, etc). In such environment, the mention that Allegro is a hobbyist project (which is true, by all means, even though there are two or three professional games, I remember a baseball simulator and the Mythic Blades fighting game, plus all the shareware ones), can both attract and reject a number of readers.
Wow.
I had no idea they were monitoring Allegro. Nifty.
About it saying hobbyist - well, game programming for me is a hobby. Not that I've actually had time to do any lately... I'd say it's fairly accurate, although `amateur' may have been more accurate.
Heh, who knew that Gamasutra cared? I didn't expect that at all. I always thought Allegro slid under their radar.
If that write-up makes you happy, check this one... all 5 pages of it.
Gamasutra isn't for students I see...
Registering is too troublesome for me to bother since I have no company and no job to fill in information about in the required fields.
And on the second page I don't even understand what they want.
Hmm, I don't remember it being that troublesome. It's really worth it, though. They've got some great articles.
I'm registered to Gamasutra and I must say there are lot of good quality stuff to read. pathfinding examples are just a drop in a lake (not as big as sea)
Btw, wo is Damon Brown?
Just disable Javascript

heh.
Matthew Leverton, webmaster of the Allegro Games Depot, thinks the reasons for Allegros popularity is pretty straightforward. "It is extremely powerful, it is extremely easy to use, it is extremely easy to port, and it is extremely cheap (free). As long as Allegro remains the above, it will be popular." Leverton seems to be banking on its popularity. Though just a depot right now, he plans on adding a multi-topic message board, adding more staff members and providing ratings and reviews for the games. He has other Allegro plans as well. "I will also be releasing a totally new website (unrelated to the AGD) geared towards the Allegro Community that I hope will become a center of information for Allegro developers and game players," Leverton tells us.
Definitely a dated article. o_o
Marcello
Well, Matthew knew what he wanted five years ago
And Trezker, I registered without problem. If they ask for company name, just put Personal. You get a free membership, and can upgrade it to a IGN membership (I think) for some bucks per year. The free one is enough to read the news, articles and the job offers.
Hmm, I became a member without completing the reg process...

They modified the news lately, so that you don't require a login anymore to access them. It is possible they have modified the registration as well.
Anyways, enjoy
Im a programmer. If something comes sealed in a box, all I can do is use it, and Im not terribly interested in that. A programmer without source code is like a mechanic who cant get the hood open: no use to anyone."
Well, that's a good thought. I still like Zoidcom though.
