Author's Description: Dungeon of Darkness is based on an old Atari 2600 game called Dark Chambers.
Dark Chambers involved walking through a maze, trying to find the exit to the
next level, collecting items and treasure along the way.
That is basically the goal of this game too but I have added some Zelda-like tweaks and goodies. Still, your goal is to complete all 26 levels from A through Z hunting for treasure.
This demo contains the first 14 levels (A-N).

What's New:

0.8.2
Changes between Demo 0.8.1 and 0.8.2

Gameplay changes
* Vampire bats are now scored properly
* Bosses should each score for 10000 points now
* Added a weapon cooldown gauge below the health meter
* Some weapon cooldown times have changed slightly
Bugfixes
* Fixed crashes on exit in Windows
* Fixed slowdown with rotated sprites on some systems
* Fixed a bug where the game's MIDI files would not be loaded
* Tabbing out of the game in Windows should no longer garble the display

Known issues
* Melee weapons still need proper sprites...
* Melee weapon bounding boxes need some work
* The item and end-game dialogs will popup and close in rapid succession if any other key is held down while the select or start buttons are pressed.
* The BACKSPACE key sometimes doesn't work correctly when inputing a name or password.

0.8.1
Changes between Demo 0.8.0 and 0.8.1

Gameplay changes
* Changed default resolution from 640x480 to 800x600
* Increased default hero maximum movement speed by 50% and increased the rate of acceleration.
* Some changes to monster AI. More monsters were added to the lower levels of play and some monsters at higher levels were replaced by a stronger version.
* Added the ability to dash: hold down the B button while you walk to gain another 33% speed increase.
* Added a highscore list
* Improved the movement of the boss Serpentile - he now comes for you in a more direct way.
* The game will now remember the last password generated: when you die, it will be pre-entered if you select the password entry, allowing you to continue. Your last password will be remembered when you restart the game.
* Changed damage/defence system to match that of AD&D.
* Added a new type of monster: the Vampire Bat.
* Added a new type of monster: the Daemon.
* Added a new type of monster: the Wizard.
* Added a new type of monster: the Grim Reaper.
* Added difficulty levels:
Normal (as before)
Hard (Monsters are harder to hit and move faster)
Hell (Monsters are even harder to hit, have more hitpoints, do more damage and are even faster).
* Ghosts move towards the player at higher levels.
* Ghouls move faster at higher levels.
* Added blocks and chests to the game.
* Some of the earlier maps were slightly modified.
* Sane controller settings dialogbox.
* It is now possible to walk (slowly) with an arrow set to the bow.
* Many items now have a limited lifetime after which they'll disappear
* Some weapons now have a knock-back side effect that knocks enemies back

Bugfixes
* Fixed a bug in generating the password where the checksum could be corrupted if the player had some pieces of heart in his/her inventory.
Unfortunately, this fix will invalidate some older passwords.
* Fixed a bug where a monster would sometimes be `stuck' if it had just been spawned.

Known issues
* The item and end-game dialogs will popup and close in rapid succession if any other key is held down while the select or start buttons are pressed.
* The BACKSPACE key sometimes doesn't work correctly when inputing a name or password.

Public Opinion
Overall Rating: 6.7
  • 8I love dungeon crawlers. I've never played Dark Chambers so I can't compare, but I enjoy Dungeons of Darkness quite a bit. Just discovered this rare gem from the List of Online Members. A robot was visiting the depot thread. Weapons could be larger, combat is a little awkward, but overall very good!
  • 6It plays well and the menu is nice. The action key around chests is a little fickle and you need to get really close to make it work. Also, the graphics could use a little work, perhaps make the sprites a bit bigger too. Over all, pretty good, just needs to be spruced up visually.
  • 6I prefer Dark Chambers. Please recruit an artist!
