Before this site goes under completely...

The allegro Discord server is actually pretty active.

I second this. I realized I haven't been to a.cc in almost a week which is probably the longest time in a while, simply because I haven't been able to log in due to site timeouts.

Anybody, if you're not on the discord, now would be good to hop in.

While you splash around on discord, I'm making my own social network. 8-):-*

We have ~130 users now.

Many of them hop in to just ask one question, but this kind of Q&A is crucial to keep Allegro alive IMHO.

Also, for some reason, A4 is still really popular with this crowd.

Surely all those people come from the forum and IRC. They could all stay on IRC and stop doing nonsense like going to discord.

There is no doubt that they continue to use A4, but aaah, they are modernizing with discord. They must have a loose can in their skull not to realize that they are only getting carried away by corporate advertising so that everyone enters a server that is dead.

Yea, right? What's up with that? A lot of DOS emulator bros or something still rocking that life.

I think it speaks to the simplicity of A4. I recall someone mentioning A5 was too complicated and a bad design and the poopoo event system and all this business. A4 is a lot simpler. It's easier to just boot up and tinker around with. Maybe that's what drives it. I think the PICO-8 idea is similar to this. It's not practical, it's just really tinkerable.

Agree. They also stick around and lurk, which tbh is a big part of a growing community so I don't see it as a bad thing.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It was great to be able to just throw up an A4 program to try something out. I wonder if it would be possible to get that simplicity on A5, and still being able to dig into the high performance graphics, event system etc if needed?

It's not possible, because deep down it's using OpenGL, and that requires a complete change in the API and in the way it's handled. There was even a time when I thought about the best API to combine what is OpenGL and Xlib, it definitely can't be done. :(

It's good to know that the community is adapting. Also, maybe A4's popularity is like that of vinyl records or even cassette tapes: A4's got more warmth in its bytes, man.

A4 had a clever GUI.

A4 is easier to teach and use, maybe? Also, Discord supposedly a censorship problem...
