Though it sounds that those trips were actually far more interesting and dangerous than that A.cc trip to Chernobyl.

Definitely more dangerous, anyway. :)
The perception of danger and actual danger are not the same thing. Even without an armed mob that you need the escort of a 120 kg man with body armor and an R4 assault rifle to get through (seriously :-X), a few too many of those visits bring the Chemical Worker's Song to mind. Any one of those has probably shortened my life span more than the infinitesimally increased lifetime risk going to Chernobyl.
Not to say that they are that dangerous: more that y'all should have come back in the day! Old-school Sarcophagus is best Sarcophagus!

And on the same theme, I finally visited the breakaway republic of Transnistria the other year. Before going there I had people betting actual money on me not making it back (I of course was happy to take those bets, because I literally could not lose: win and I get money, lose and I... don't have to pay ;)) because the online travel guides make it seem like if you so much as look at people funny, you'll get arrested by the KGB.
Nope!
The KGB agents were lovely people! :D
(Even the ones surreptitiously taking photos of you as you walked around town were just inept enough that it was just adorable. ;))

It's not a zombie apocalypse until X-G and 23yrold come back

When did 23 leave? And where did he leave to?

X-G I can say is doing fine at least. :)

Maybe you should consider writing a book :) Didn't know the song, thanks for broadening my knowledge.

Nice 8-) a few years back I didn't even know that such country even exists. And part of the trip was even covered by the won bets, adorable ;D I don't suppose those people were real friends, were they? :)

Hm, X-G, last time I remember he was posting some screenshots of some Invaders clone with very Cthulhu looking sprites, good to hear he's doing fine.

I hate how the world of programming has become, rotten to capitalisms and twisted into meaningless trash languages. Between irresponsible people to die and many other things.

I am in the process of eternal hibernation, increasingly inactive and soon I will be meditating for 10000 years without having contact with anyone. :-/

So.
What's happened in the last... err... 10 years?

Let's see. I finished my PhD in bioinformatics, moved to the UK, then abandoned the whole bioinformatics thing and moved back to the Netherlands. Now working as a regular software developer.

To scratch that academic itch, I overload my games with science. And I do still make games, now more than ever.

We have an 18-month-old daughter :)

As far as programming goes, it's a long time since I worked on a game. Somehow we had trouble making a profit with games (funny, that). We got into deep learning though and it's quite a thing - so very different from classical programming. It can be demoralising when nothing you try works, but at the same time, it's an amazing set of skills to be acquiring.

I will say in response to

that I find Python rather good. Isn't it also easy to feel disillusioned in any area of life in its current state, but when you look back, it's the good things that people remember? It's certainly true with classical music.

Unity is an odd beast. It's got good bits and bad bits in it. Unfortunately, many of the core designs that you cannot avoid using are bad. Some of the problems are very old and just hard to fix without breaking everything, but Mecanim is more recent and is impossible. Perhaps there are lesser known competitors to Unity that get more things right, or perhaps there's still a place for Allegro? :)

[EDIT]
An example of a bad but unfixable design in Unity: method execution order, especially for identically named methods across different behaviours on different objects, and especially in that it tends to be consistent (but arbitrary) in the editor and then it changes when you build, leading to build-only problems. And by the way, building can take half an hour if you're unlucky, but certainly a minute or two.

Mecanim is impossible: it forces you to make lots of separate assets that you have to choose paths for, and it's difficult to understand what they all are; and then it constrains you into a state machine with blocking transitions, preventing you from ever being able to make a responsive, reliable app since things you do during a transition will get ignored or delayed and will have a chance to fight each other in race conditions. It's just the usual "imposing a framework" thing that happens so often. I stick to Unity's legacy animations.

During the last 10 years I switched my job from university to database programming at first an after a few further years I changed again to my current job: software engineering for space flights!

But I never stopped working with Allegro in my free time.

Real men program in binary.....

Since I've hacked changing the binary code of the Atari 2600 and Nintendo ROMs, I've become quite a man.

Wow, congrats! I hadn't heard from you in a while and was already wondering what's up. Do you still live in England?

So I guess, no time for TINS then?

Indeed, sadly not :(

We're in Germany at the moment, which is probably for the best.

Life with two children is somewhat more full than before.

I'd love to take parts in compos, but I'm afraid I'll have to wait until the little one is a few more months old so the evening routines are common to her and her brother (less time spent doing 2 times the same thing, same sleeping hours)

Why has nobody created a virtual children's game so far? With this, everyone would want to raise their children and they would also have more free time to do their things. (It is possible to reduce the level of demand of these children so that they do not break your balls as much)

I would say "we've evolved a bit since then", but it would probably come across as racist so I won't.

You mean Princess Maker all the way back in the 1991, and it's 4+ sequels?
