Some day, very soon, I'm going to port all my most promising unfinished A4 projects to A5. Meanwhile, I'm doing more Arduino stuff. Kind of returning to the essential fun in coding. Compare it to coding text console games. There's even a community, arduino.cc, which is a bit like what a.cc was in its glorious years, very friendly, very nerdy people, yet having a hard time being polite to impatient noobs asking stupid questions. Is it a coincidence that they both share the .cc domain?

I've developed an interest in horology, I get enough programming in my day job.

I used to argue with others here about them wanting to do all the work in society while some fat cat in his big house decided how to spend the money earned by said work.

I called it slavery, but everybody else insisted it was socialism. Maybe a lot of the enthusiasts imagined they'd be the fat cat in the big house.

Now I just pretend to be a looser with no onion.

Sounds more like capitalism to me.

Under capitalism, the invisible hand of Adam Smith drives prices, and since people want to maximize their profits, they invest in what shortages/desires exist.

In the USSR, you could get plenty of cucumbers, not much meat, sewing needles were almost unheard of, but you can get those in plenty here.

I googled for the term I couldn't think of off the top of my head (regulatory capture) which I'll get to in a minute, but I came across this gem of stupidity right off.

Quote:

The common capitalist mantra that “anyone can be rich if they work hard enough” is a fallacy. There’s only so much room at the top. In order to make money, first you have to take it from someone else.

That's a blatant lie. Growing potatoes or designing things through the effort of your own brain is not a zero sum game. Who got ripped off if you grow potatoes?

Quote:

regulatory capture

That's the fault of the people who won't pay the price of eternal vigilance.

And god damn it! I've fallen into it again, arguing with people who are enamored of all the free stuff! Well, at least since the Bernie Bros are too lazy to work for what they want, they're also too lazy to go to the polls.

I'm out.

They all watch too much MSNBC... they get ideas.

Capitalism is currently asking for some of its money back that was wasted on policies such as the war on poverty, urban renewal, gasohol etc.

Completely different, perfectly mundane industry, I'm afraid.

The part about the work trips make it sound a little bit different :) Though it sounds that those trips were actually far more interesting and dangerous than that A.cc trip to Chernobyl.

Given the country you are in, I'm pretty sure I know exactly which one you're talking about. :)

Guilty as charged 8-) but we're officially US owned and quite spread around the world. On the other hand, the other company is also spread nowdays but as far as I know they don't have US office, yet.

It's been a long time but yes, so true ;D

This thread has attracted a lot of old names. :)

Indeed it did, I still recognize lots of the names and avatars. I've been lurking in shadows for the past 6 years, popping up here and there. My problem is that I always forget I wanted to checkout and actually checkout after a year or so. And yet, still A.cc is set as one of my pinned tabs :o It's nice that this place still holds up.

Hello, friends.

I started a new job in December 2018. My job before that was slowly whittling away, so I jumped ship to where a lot of my co-workers went. I was hesitant at first because it was not an industry I had any passion for: the trucking industry. But, it's actually been great! I'm the Product Owner for the mobile application that our 18,000 drivers use on a daily basis. We're currently developing rapid solutions to help the drivers in this wild environment where no one wants to get close or exchange physical things, a key element of the industry. I've got a pretty a cool team that I get to work with and a lot of opportunity.

This is certainly a scary time. My wife has an autoimmune disease and my mom has early onset Alzheimer's disease and lives in a locked down facility where there is one known case of COVID-19.

Anyway, good to see a few familiar faces...err...avatars here. :)

If I ever met him in person, the only thing I'd ask is for him to say "Welcome to Allegro".

The famous "Welcome to allegro"
You cannot know how happy I was the first time I compiled allegro and had working examples.
That short sentence will stay forever in my mind ^^

Maybe now is a good time for someone to nicely ask Shawn if he will write a DX12 driver for allegro....

If he adds support, we won't have an excuse for not finishing our projects.

By reading this sig, I, the reader, agree to render my soul to Bob Keane. I, the reader, understand this is a legally binding contract and freely render my soul.
