Hey ho. I'm back to playing music, and I have an instrument I'd like to perfect. The trumpet ! I'm back to it after a decade of nothing and only a few month of real practice. I started to play again half a year ago and I'm starting to get in touch with it. I'm training by myself, because I do not really have the time nor the money to take training with a teacher. I already pay and do boxing which is all I can afford with my work + life. And here goes the request. I now a lot of you are musician, and maybe you have some free resources you can share. I searched for methods and sheets, but as far as I saw when I did it, there are not that much for trumpet. If you have advice, methods, sheets, whatever !! Tobias, maybe ? Thanks ! I'll give you a cookie !! "Code is like shit - it only smells if it is not yours" |

I'd suggest 8notes.com, but guessing from their flute selection, you won't find much. As to cookies, I'd rather have Irish folk music for flute. As for advice: be sure to get your breathing technique right. If learned incorrectly, this is the hardest thing to correct(think 2 years of disciplined training). I got by with an incorrect technique for the first 8 years of playing, and then lip stamina just couldn't get better because I had to form all higher notes purely on my lips, without breathing support. Yeah, I quickly encountered the problem of lost lips stamina when I started playing again. I was putting too much pressure with the trumpet on my lips, which was stopping blood from circulating correctly. I had a few read that pointed me to some better mouth/tong/breath control. I still have some problems with high notes, my lips strengh isn't yet enough to produce a nice sound. I would be very pleased if you could share some exercices, J-Gamer, or post one little trumpet buf :-) "Code is like shit - it only smells if it is not yours" |

For training your breathing, the best exercise I found was to play the basic overtones(C,E,G) with as little pressure on your lips as possible. Let the trumpet barely touch your lips and you'll be forced to: This way of playing isn't meant to be used in normal play, since it's quite demanding, but the main goal is to learn to stop blocking the air flow with your throat. Here's a breathing exercise you could do as well that might just help: http://brassmusician.com/breathing-exercises-the-held-breath-and-fear-of-the-first-note-part-1/ " There are plenty of wonderful ideas in The Bible, but God isn't one of them." - Derezo |

I used to play trumpet from 6th grade to 9th. My lips are totally out of shape now though and I doubt I could play well if at all. I may have some sheet music but the only way to share it is through photos, as my scanner is broken. J-Gamer: trumpet buf, maybe trumpet buff ? I was meaning something like 'post a video of a short playing session of yours'. Edgar: Even if it's photos, I would be pleased if you give me some. I may rewrite them to a nice paper sheet. "Code is like shit - it only smells if it is not yours" |

Sorry, I don't have any recording equipment and I'm still struggling with my breathing technique myself. " There are plenty of wonderful ideas in The Bible, but God isn't one of them." - Derezo |

A pity. I will post one soon, even if I'm not proud of it. IIRC Bruce is playing piano fine, and Johan Halmèn is playing music too. I was hoping that Tobias Dammer would pass down here cause he already posted some tuba video of him and may have some good advice. "Code is like shit - it only smells if it is not yours" |

Bonjour ! If you're looking for sheet music, look no further: IMSLP is the best free source of sheet music IMO. -- |

I could provide some samples from some notebooks that I like, but they are not particularly for reeds, nor for brass. Just simply for wind instruments. It's old. Very old. Haven't checked with the manufacturer yet. "Gebr. Alexander" from Mainz. It's a 4 valve Eb tuba. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Years of thorough research have revealed that what people find beautiful about the Mandelbrot set is not the set itself, but all the rest. |

Yes, definitely steampunk! Years ago I did a music video based on a silly facebook game, where I played this very same tuba: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nruE7RWxVI&t=200 I think a 4th valve is most common in Eb tubas. The tuba is not that big, but the 4th valve (which drops the tone a 4th), enables you to play all notes from the "base" tone Eb all the way down to the next Eb, one octave below. And technically even one more octave after that. Maybe Tobias can explain more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Years of thorough research have revealed that what people find beautiful about the Mandelbrot set is not the set itself, but all the rest. |
