Here are some pictures I took during my hut-to-hut walking trip in the Austrian Alps (to be more precise, the Stubai Alps in Tyrol) last month.

Nice. I like that valley vista the most. :) I wish I'd go on a trip like that once. Not going to happen for a while though... :(

Miran: Ow. So have the floods receded yet, or is it time to start gathering two of every animal? :)

Andrei: Me like! Especially #3 and #4.

Ooh, I guess Miran's pictures mean I have to post some more Korea/China pictures in response. Their quality is awful since they were taken through the window of a moving train, but still:

(The flooded Yalu turned an already interesting train ride into a Chinese curse kind of interesting train ride - we got stuck in Dandong, since the tracks ahead had been washed away by the floods)

I guess these were taken last spring when a tsunami came to Honolulu but its always summer here.

There are 1000's of sailboats off the south shore in this picture because of the tsunami.

@Miran: The Slovenian Alps are pretty similar to the Austrian Alps so you wouldn't have to travel far. You just need to find a bunch of mountain huts that are a day's walking-distance apart. BTW the approximate location of the vista is here (looking west).

@Gnolam: It looks like you've been on an interesting trip. Do you have the photos or a description of the trip online anywhere? I've also been to China at this time of the year and my memory was the sauna-like atmosphere in Beijing.

BTW in my pic #4, the clouds filled the valley so it looked like a carpet of clouds. Also, the locations of #6 and #7 (and part of the background of #8) can be seen in #5.

Wonderfull place. A bit too much people around the bridge, but that's good.

You get an idea of the color of the glacier water here

A bridge that leads to a hydro plant source by a mountain waterfall

These trees look like they could end someone on the path.

Not a very good shot of it but there's a Canadian flag off in the distance.

I liked your bridge image. This is a rough view of what I would change in it:

That looks a lot better. I didn't do any processing on those images except to scale them down.

You don't need to process images. You need to get the settings on the camera right before you press the shutter. ;)

That depends. For some things a good photo manipulation program running on a powerful computer can usually do a much better job than the puny firmware on most cameras.

I'm not talking about the JPEG conversion, I'm talking about exposure. Shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Probably you get the best pictures if you find the right settings on your camera. But I guess there is always place for some improvement on any picture, things you can do on the computer. And then there's things that are impossible to do on the camera. Or the camera might have some very simple tools for it. Like posterizing etc.

One of my favourite shots in this thread was this. Remember who took it?

Vectorized to 4 colours. Some contours added. Inkscape is your friend.

Nice. :)

But as I said, I'm talking about basic photographic procedures. Image manipulation techniques are supposed to be used in order to realize what you had previsualized before you even picked up the camera, not to rescue fucked up shots which came out that way because you're too lazy to even learn about exposure.

Extending this thought to programming, saying you can ignore basic technique because you can correct photos later in software is the same as saying you can skip the design phase of programming and go straight to coding, because you can refactor later anyway. ;)

As long as you achieve the desired result, it doesn't matter how you reached it. But: unless you're actually painting in details, you're not adding any information that isn't already there. An severely underexposed photo with its curves adjusted to try to achieve the look of a properly exposed photo will be grainy and posterized, and no amount of post-processing can bring back lost detail in overexposed areas.

So you actually do need to get it at least somewhat right from the start. :)

Well I'm not really a photography buff.. I have a point and shoot camera that has a few settings, but those photos above were shot with an iphone, which doesn't have any settings :). Perhaps there is some App for iphone that allows different settings though.
