Welcome to Travel, the MMO. This is a massively multiplayer online game. When played, you must make an account. Your account will be saved online automatically.

The world is shared, and infinite. There are resources to be mined and cities to service. The goal? Become the richest man in the land.

Its harder than it looks.

After viewing these screenshots, read the instructions below.

Step one
Create an account. Use a memorable username and password. The password is stored in an irreversible manner (MD5).

Now, to business
To get started you'll need some cash. Take out a loan by click the "LOAN" button. You can have up to $10,000 in debt but be careful because interest charges are frequent (while you're online), pay it off as quick as you can.

Steel for the people!
Buy steel by clicking the STEEL button. Steel is expensive and buildings need a lot of it. Try starting out with 500.

Once you can afford it, find a mineral deposit and build an ore mine. With a mine and a steel mill you can harvest your own steel for free! And, you can sell the steel for cash.

Trains need oil...
Buy steel by clicking the OIL button. Oil is cheap but trains need a lot of it.

As quick as you can, find an oil deposit and build a oil well. With a well and a refinery you can harvest your own oil for free! And, you can sell the oil for cash.

Place tracks, buildings!
Click the building, track or train on the right to acquire it. Then click on the map to place it. You'll need to have the cash and steel for it. Check the bottom of the screen to see if you afforded the placement.

Move around...
Move around using the arrow keys and mouse wheel. Check out what other players are building nearby and see if you can't steal their business...

Control trains
The game is all about trains. Click a train to control it (it highlights in red). Then click a building and it will go there. Move it to a mine or well to pick up ore or oil. Then move it to a refinery or steel mill to offload the cargo. Most importantly, move to a town to pickup passengers for Travel!

Guy. I don't understand how to play your game.

How many does costs something? How can I know that it is oil, steel or money that I need, if I don't know the pricings?

You said "build an oil mill". Which of the icons are an oil mill? Which of the icons is what?
Where I can put an oil mill. It says that it should be put in top of something. I try to put in top of something, it says that i can't put one thing in top of another thing.

From the top right going down: Oil well, Oil refinery, Ore mine, Steel mill, Track, Train, Delete

Nothing costs more than 1000 dollars. Steel costs range from 10 (track) to 900 (steel mill). Most cost 200 - 500 steel.

Place oil well on a tile with black oil marks on it.

Place ore mines on a tile with shiny metal blocks.

I tried compiling it but it wouldn't compile.

I'm attempting to run it in Wine but it fails (the connection drops).

I have a dilemma here.

Also: Eww, Vista.

What are the compiler errors?

This is actually kinda fun :) I just wish the prices were visible in game. Also, a way to automate the trains would be nice ;D

I have an extremely terrible connection to the server. I'd place a building, and it would take about two seconds to appear. :(

My connection seems pretty good. The game has crashed a couple of times in the last 10 minutes though.

Tried it on Wine and it works! :D Though, I'm clueless on what is happening. It's great that you can zoom out and look and other people's track.

Hah! Finally got enough cash & steel for a mine + refinery. Now I'm rolling in dough!

It's a bit glitchy, but the concept is fun. Automating train jobs would make the game much better, I think.

I think I remember a thread about this game. :D Do you have plans to continue development or is this the final version? :-/ Also, I'm curious what your thoughts are on licensing the source. Would you mind if somebody tried to port it to Linux? How about the server source?

It sounds pretty cool, especially for a SH entry, but I can't try it out until I get home. :(

** EDIT **

I'm sure you're aware, but the Web site is currently an Apache 2 test page. ;)

Sure, linux is no problem. It just needs a makefile fix and some small code fixes (compiler errors).

Nice. Yeah, all I needed to do to compile in Linux was move the -lwsock32 options to the WINDOWS section of the makefile and add a missing ')' on line 40 or something in src/mutex.cpp.

I launched the game and my oil rapidly dropped to 0 for no apparent reason (I hadn't built anything yet).

Constructive criticism:

  • I don't seem to need oil for anything... I've been driving my train back and forth seemingly for free for a while now. ;D Edit: Or is that because of the oil I'm collecting as I go? :-/

  • It seems to have trouble identifying tiles next to your tracks. Whenever I try to build stuff to the left of my tracks, I get the "You have to place that next to your track." message.

  • It doesn't seem to identify the minerals properly because I regularly get the "You have to place that on top of something (ie, tracks, minerals)." when trying to place an ore mine, but I'm pretty sure I'm on a minerals tile (i.e. the one with like 6 gray dots?). Further, what sense does it make to put an ore mine on the tracks? Not only does it not make sense, but when trying to place other objects on the tracks the message suggests that nothing can overlap like that... :-X

** EDIT **

Yeah, it's also pretty glitchy. It doesn't identify trains, tracks, and buildings properly and it becomes frustrating trying to communicate with the game. I like the concept though. It would be even better if an entire town were developed, whereby each user could choose which role(s) they want to take, and set up those producers/services; preferably each depending on each other with competitive prices.

That's a particularly nasty bug I caught after submission. I rushed to finish that code in 30 minutes (at about 4am).

unit.cpp:292 is currently:

    if(destReached) {

But it should be:

    if(destReached && user_id == gameState.user_id) {

And,
user.cpp:249 is currently:

        sock.sendPacket("12 1");

But it should be:

        if(user_id == gameState.user_id) sock.sendPacket("12 1");

Whats happening is when other peoples' trains move, your oil is used up. Also when other people get oil, steel and money from trains you get it too.

FTFY.

The game is ruined! \o/ Does that mean all the time I thought I was driving on no oil I was actually burning BAF's oil? ;D Thanks, BAF!

SamH h4x!

When I first created an account I made one with Samuel Henderson, but for some reason it started me out with $0, 0 ore and 0 oil. So I took out a loan before reading the thread here in the depot. Once I realized that something was wrong and I should have started with money I created a new account called 'SamH'. This one was much easier to get working. And no, I didn't hack the game to give myself millions of dollars :)

I don't think I started out with money... :-/ I took out a big loan right away.

The authorities should so transfer Samuel's debt over to SamH. ;D

I can absorb the debt pretty easily :)
