Closing Down

Just to let people know that my site Reflected Games will close down on or after the 22nd. Shareware Games are too difficult to make a living out of..

Neon Wars will still be available from Blitwise.com, but all the other games and the game creation articles will disappear. So if you want to buy Storm, Sunnyball or download Dynamite or Chaos Funk, better do it now.

I'm now going to look for a career and do free games like Chaos Groove as a fun hobby. But I'll probably not be so focused on writing games as before.

Cheers for all your support!
Rich

That's really too bad. It was really encouraging knowing that someone I know (if I can say we know each other ;)) is making a living off shareware games - the world would definitely be a better place if we could all make a living out of something we love.

Well, in the worst case, your shareware games will make an excellent addition to your CV "experience" tab when looking for a good career opportunity. Good luck! :)

Oh, and it's too bad you are taking the game creation articles down. They were really nice for newbies, I think. I'm sure you'll find someone with bandwidth to burn who would gladly put them up somewhere.

Cheers Jakub. I'm ok with it, I've had time to think about it and the future.

I wouldn't recommend anyone does shareware now unless you want to work for a casual games company or a company that has the resources to appear on a console.

You could always put the stuff up on your members.allegro.cc site.

Well, Sunny Ball and Storm won't be available for free for some time (out of respect for the people who bought the games recently). So, that only leaves Chaos Funk (which has been superceded by Chaos Groove) and Dynamite, which is looking a bit old now!

That and the articles that people still recommend people to read... theres no point in letting those disappear.

If someone wants to mirror or put them somewhere, be my guest.. :)

I've always had the opposite mindset about stuff like that. It's silly to get offended because someone else got something. Nobody "deserves" anything for free, so if anyone gets anything, we should be happy for them... It's not my loss.

That's too bad. Least you got several games you can be proud of out of the whole process and it's good to hear your hobbying will continue.

Yeah, steven. And I'm still improving as a programmer. I'm really happy with Chaos Groove so far. :)

You're not quite getting it, I'm moving on and so have no interest in maintaining a personal website to mirror the games and articles on my Reflected Games site.

Harsh, but true! :)

If people want them, they will grab them now. If not.. shrugs

Who said you had to maintain it? :o

I just bought a copy of Sunny Ball ;D I've always loved that game. Especially the music and artwork.

Edit:
I even ordered the physical media for the extra $10.

That's sad. :(

My search for a part-time job to supplement my shareware income didn't get very far because I recently came up with an excellent business idea which I'm now in the process of starting up.

...so I'll have TWO businesses at a time, my new one and my shareware.

I just wanted to mention that in case you might be able to apply that approach to what you plan to be doing. If your shareware still nets enough profit to do it on the side, I say stick with it at least a day or two a week instead of just dumping all support.

Though you've been doing it longer than me, so I'm pretty sure you're not making this decision lightly. I can only hope that whatever it is you're getting yourself into is a step in the right direction.

Good luck! 8-)

I, or my girlfriend rather, bought sunny ball recently. She loves that game :)

I'm sorry shareware didn't work out for you, but i hope you keep up the game development anyway, even if just as a hobby...

Good luck in the future!

Good luck, Phipps. You have been one of the more prolific game authors around here. Your work ethic has inspired many of us.

In a way, games are a lot more fun to make as a hobby because you don't have to bend to the current trends (which are often boring). There's no pressure and you don't have to worry about sales. You can just let loose.

I doubt there are too many shareware authors making a decent living these days. I'm sure you'll find a way to put your talents to good use in another career. :)

Didn't this happen once before? This thread seems deja vu to me.

Anyway, good luck with your future plans!

Seems to be the type given to "public depression." :-/

But really, there's no point in doing something if you don't want to.

so sad to heard this, at least you made some money and for sure it was a good experience, btw, I bought sunny ball for my daughter, she liked it and already finshed it.. probably games appealing to kids or woman work better in shareware.

anyway, best of luck to you Rich.

Hey Phippsy, it's unfortunate that it hasn't worked out. But it's good to see that you're accepting it and ready to move on.

Will you stop any programming what-so-ever, or continue as a hobby? Whatever you decide, I hope you don't leave Allegro.cc - your light hearted comments do make for a bit of fresh air around here :)

Yeah, it's too bad you couldn't make a go of the shareware biz. Maybe now you will have more time to hit us up with those news articles from the BBC:) I kind of miss those threads.
