Author's Description: In this demo, I've used the power of Allegro, together with the European Space Agency's Hipparcos Star Catalog, to generate this 3-dimensional starmap which I've called StarGlide. Stats:

* ESA's Hipparcos Mission, launched in 1989, spent 4 years taking the most precise measurements of stars' magnitudes, positions, and parallaxes (used to determine stellar distances), ever obtained for over 100,000 stars.
* This catalog includes almost every star brighter than magnitude 6.0, and therefore includes every star visible to the naked eye from Earth.
* The catalog also included detailed spectroscopic data for each star in its database, which I've used to add a splash of color to the stars!

Enjoy!

  • 7Nice. I wish it had full screen mode, and more importantly - that it'd show constellations, so I'd use it to recognize stuff in the sky!
  • 8This is a nice little program. I can't say I enjoyed using it but it is well made. If you are interested in flying around the galaxy looking at the stars this program might be for you. My only complaint is that you can't fly backwards. If I fly past the star I want to look at I have to turn around.
