My insects arrived. They were extremely overpriced, but it made for an interesting experience anyway.

video

And I get to brag about eating a big ass insect. >:( Pussies. We didn't think to record a video until after I bit the front half of that big ass water scorpion (I'd say that the part I am chewing on in this video, which I guess was eyes and claws and whatever, was close to same size as the tail end that I show; albeit, by the time this video starts I probably already had a few minutes to chew on it and I'm just fighting with the tougher bits).

They were mostly tasteless. Some reminded me of smelt tail. I ordered them from http://thailandunique.com/. I wouldn't recommend it. You pay like $6 for a tiny little packet of insects. They should be about 50x cheaper. Still, it was fun. :)

I now aim to find a better source for insects, and perhaps a more nourishing preparation method (the fried/dehydrated insects seem like empty shells so I'd be surprised if there's any nutrition to gain).

I might as well be the first one to say "huh, I never guessed you looked like that..." but on this occasion I won't. I'm just not in the mood.

I thought you were buying a Honda 500, or was that a different thread.

Do you only own one T-shirt or are they all red ;)

I own several T-shirts, and almost none of them are red (though it is arguably my favorite color). In fact, if you want to know the truth, I got that shirt from a beer case. >:( And it spent like a year and a half behind my couch, where it arrived after I pulled it out of my beer case, threw it on the back of the couch, and it fell. >:( Then like 2 days ago I decided I was going to wear my new motorcycle gear to work the next day to show it off and work it in a little bit, and that's when I thought about whether or not I had any shirts that "fit" and remembered my free beer shirts and found one behind the couch. >:( I pulled it out, brushed it off, and the rest is history. 8-) Granted, it's still a little bit big, but meh. The video and images were both taken within hours of each other.

I imagined you a lot more nerdy looking. You know, the typical FF fanboy look. But you actually have some decent looks bambam. You remind me of a friend. He gets pissed off often and when he rants he is funny.

Do you get pissed off often?

I've found that most of us are surprisingly normal looking. :P Internet people are people too.

I ate a silkworm in China once at an actual silkworm factory :) Can't remember much of the taste though.

I say we should eat more bugs. Since this seems to be the year of the cicadas I say that's more for the eatin' ;D

I like this episode of QI where they eat insects and have much fun discussing it.

That video from gnolam made my day, that was hilarious. ;D

Regarding insects, that's interesting, pity that over here they are so frowned upon, yet there's like a third of the world population whose diet is mostly insects...

One third? Where do so many people eat mainly insects?

I heard something in a documentary a while ago... searches

Quote:

it is estimated that insect-eating is practised regularly by at least 2 billion people worldwide

Source

Well, that part does not specifically say "mostly insects", but in the documentary they made it look like it was. So take that with a grain of salt I guess. :-/

EDIT: More FAO Info.

Isn't the point that cattle feed is going to be too costly/hard to come by in the not-as-far-as-we'd-hoped future, so insects are the obvious alternative....or is that media spin nonsense (I try to avoid TV/newspapers)

I think the point is more that the world is over-populated with humans as it is and people keep on fucking without condoms. People that can't afford food fuck to pass the time. It's only going to get worse (unless maybe we start a world war to control the child population). The planet can only support so much farming. It just so happens that insects can be farmed in much less space with much fewer resources for much more efficient output.

Probably wont matter, the people who can't get food today wont get more food just because we start eating insects. We probably wont share that with them either.

For the record, I just finished eating the last of the opened packets of insects. >:( The only packet that I didn't finish was the Giant Water Scorpion because what was left was rather tough. I began by throwing a broken-off piece in my mouth, with the intent to finish it too, but then I decided fuck that and threw it out. It's very tough. I have to imagine there was a solution that I'm not aware of, but whatever. I only have 3 sealed packets left. I think they're "assorted" x 2, and ants. The Queen ants that I ate I found hot. I think it was the spices/preparation, and not the ants, but nevertheless it was a fun experience. Not a big deal though. What remains is probably negligible. I reiterate though that I wouldn't consider it a worthwhile investment to order from this same Web site. Insects do sound like a reasonable investment on the whole though. I think that we need more accessible businesses in North America to make it practical.

I hear this often, but I've never seen support for the claim.

This seems like the kind of thing people who don't support frakking chat about at the gas pump.

In the healthiest populations we're not birthing enough children to even keep a static number.
More and more of the rest are also getting less children, so the growth will be slowing down and eventually go down if we don't mess it up.

He's our neighbour's cat and likes to visit us every once in a while. Half an hour ago I saw him chasing something in our garden. I went out to see and I saw him making great jumps and catching really big beetles. I guess this kind:
{"name":"images","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/1\/e\/1ecdd819e9840c27251bd2204284873f.jpg","w":259,"h":194,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/1\/e\/1ecdd819e9840c27251bd2204284873f"}images
It made funny sounds, when he was chewing the beetles.
