bamccaig: is your computer broken? I've been using Win 7 since the first public beta and I still haven't seen a BSOD or system crashes. Even in XP they were very rare (I used to have some... and after a pair of weeks my CPU definitively blowed -- |

I only had BSOD's with a crappy video driver and a crappy wireless card, but Windows needs reinstalling every 6 months due to the registry constipation according to the windows fanboys. They all watch too much MSNBC... they get ideas. |

If I had any, then I could probably have some complaints about Windows, but... Quote: ... Linux can do it all and does it well, but sometimes it requires the user to make it. GNU/Linux distributions are written by programmers for programmers. Ubuntu tries to be n00b friendly, but there's still a long way to go. I agree completely, yes. I particularly hate the "Your computer isn't protected" one that won't go away! until you manually close it. I'm on XP, I don't know if newer versions are more or less annoying, but these annoyances are (somewhat) minor considering the better performance I get compared to any Linux distro I've tried. Arthur Kalliokoski said: ... Windows needs reinstalling every 6 months due to the registry constipation according to the windows fanboys. Well, there's new versions of popular Linux distros every 6 months, too. That, by the way, is something that has always puzzled me.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 now. As always, had to plug in the network cable to download the proprietary wireless drivers. Video was stuck at 1024x768. So of course, I just typed the newb-friendly xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1200 and fixed it. It's very shameful that they cannot get the display dialog to show the right resolutions. Anyway, I use Ubuntu more than Windows now. I basically only use my computer for web development, and I prefer Linux's powerful shell and buggy graphics over Windows 7 lame shell and supercharged graphics. I have nothing major against Windows 7, but Compiz's wobbly windows own my soul. |

yum install epiphany, it kicks Firefox ass! Anyways I got a huge malware bug on my xp and I'm too lazy to reinstall that junk so I'll just use Fedora 12 Linux from now on. Heads up for May 18th its Fedora 13!

I'd use the stuff I see on YouTube concerning Compiz if I were trying to impress some lamer, but since no lamers want to see what Linux can do, it's pretty much a waste of time. I'll stick to windows that lay flat, thanks. They all watch too much MSNBC... they get ideas. |

I installed ubuntu 10.04 Beta weeks ago on my Dual Core laptop and everything worked at first sight. Kibiz0r said: Linux neckbeards see themselves as being at war with Microsoft
There is no war. You can't be at war without an opponent The best practice is a good theory. |

I hate the new look, but I didn't like the old look either. Every computer should have a plain black background. I love sshfs. The first app I always install: |

There are plenty of window decorators out there. If you don't like the new look, get one of them. The best practice is a good theory. |

If I'm not mistaken there's even port of IE that can be run natively. I've fiddled with it some time ago. But I guess this one uses wine. Or ML has some weird sense of humour... wait a minute, ML has some weird sense of humour Anyway, I'm quite interested to see what 10.04 is up to. I've upgraded to 9.10 just week ago, everything went smoothly until I tried to run Battle for Wesnoth. They managed to break sound horribly and now nearly all games freeze up on exit and sound isn't working. If the problem persists I'm gonna try Mint. Or just swallow my pride and install Debian even on my laptop. kenmasters1976 said: And yet it's not enough. I find myself going back to Windows every time and I'm one of those willing to dive a bit into Linux. Most casual users wouldn't survive without Windows. I found myself in that position back then too. But it was mostly because of outdated distro (some old Suse) or trying to install Gentoo as a noob. All it took was some determination and when I bought larger harddrive for my laptop I've set up OpenSuse as my primary OS. Since then I've become unable to get back to Windows. Windows now serves me as a bootloader for games. Nothing more. I can't get to use them again, they annoy me, I feel like I don't have control over them and they lack good shell. But to be fair, sometimes I get really fed up with annoyances on Linux as well. Most notably sound issues (like two programs using sound running concurrently aren't working out of box) and a gut feeling that my harddrive is cluttered with thousands of libraries that I don't think are needed. But then again, no registry to be cluttered [My website][CppReference][Pixelate][Allegators worldwide][Who's online] |

May not be a completely relevant question but, why do software releases have a code name ?Is that really required or just because they need to have one.

To answer your question, Member #10,724, a name is easier to remember than a number. You wouldn't want to use numbers for labels in your programs, would you? And there is the coolness factor for weird names. They all watch too much MSNBC... they get ideas. |
