stray kitten and now cat shows up

We caught a kitten a couple days ago and a couple days later I find another gray cat outside wandering around our place meowing loudly.

The kitten was also meowing loudly during my babysitting time, same "yearning" tone. I'm concerned that the older cat may be the mother (looks like a female, don't ask) looking for the baby, and for reasons beyond my control, the newfound "owner" of the kitten refuses to let the two meet.

here's the best pics I have gotten:

Since I have nothing better to do in my life than meddle in the soap opera of the cat world, what do you think are the odds this is the cat's kitten? and should I do anything about it? and what are the odds that this kitten is stray and not just lost?

'Accidentally' let it out so it can be with it's mother - separating the kitten from their mother when it obviously needs her is tantamount to animal cruelty.

The kitten looks old enough to not need its mother.

That said, if the cats are not related, you might want to keep a close eye on them if you try to let them mingle. My fiancee's mother has a cat, and at the beginning of the summer she also got a kitten from a friend who had a bunch of (presumably inbred :-X) kittens.

It took a long time for the old cat to get used to the new one. You turn your head for one minute and the older one was trying to kill the little one.

Here's a blurry picture of the little one, for reference.

What bait did you use for the kitten?

EDIT: FREE GAME IDEA. Nice little girl (think Angelica from Rugrats) has to acquire a menagerie of local pets & wildlife, using a series of humourously animated traps & snares.

We threw a blanket on him as he was trying to run away...

So if I were to have the cat and kitten meet, it would be pretty obvious if they were related?

Yep. if Mama starts licking Baby that's a sure sign. It's prolly her last one, or else she would have stayed with the rest. IMO, it's cruel to keep any cat in a house with no cat door. As the kitten turned up at the house, it must know the neighbourhood so there's no need for the "lock them in the kitchen with a bowl of food for a week until they become acclimatised" crap.

EDIT: That game idea, it's bloody Pokémon, isn't it? real animals tho, so it'd be edjukaishnul

Wait I see three different cats there...the kitten looking through the window, the mother with white on her face and another cat not in the other pic. This cat isn't related to the other two? My cat looks...exactly like that black one :o If they're staring at eachother its a possibility...I never had stray cats peek in through the window, and there are stray cats here. In fact both of ours are x-strays and are now strangely sophisticated. They have a cat door but one prefers to ring a "doorbell" to go out--just a wind chime hanging from the door.

Take the mother in too. If she eats the kitten then... who knows it could have been the mother :P

[edit] It's pretty obvious to me that the cat is (or most likely) the mother or is the adopted mother...

I wouldn't worry about it too much.
If Disney movies have taught us anything it's that cute animals will always get their happy ending no matter what you do.

Yeah, they would have a similar taste.

Touché. Fine then, the titular cute animal always gets the happy ending. So just to be safe...

Hey man, the kitten's being held hostage by a neighbor. If I had my way, I'd have put the two together right away to see what's going on.

I tried to reason with my neighbor, but she's a selfish bitch.

You could follow Mama home, find her legal owner, and then call out the SWAT team and helicopters.

Edit: Plan B. dress her in a ninja suit and throw her through the neighbour's window.

Grilled or baked? Personally, I prefer sauteed with a bit of garlic.

It's probably crueller to give the cat free reign over the neighborhood. I once saw a cat get hit by a car.

It's a question of whether you should be taking the cat's decisions about where it goes into your own hands. I myself think that adult cats should be let outside if they want; they become rather neurotic if kept indoors perpetually. That's what's cruel.
