Step right up! The first ever Allegro.cc Dwarf Fortress Succession Game is here!

Brief Overview:
This thread will be dedicated to the creation and completion of a succession-style community game of Dwarf Fortress.

Rules of Play:

  1. Each player will play through one (1) year of the game - from spring till spring. You'll have full control over the operations and expansion of the fortress.

  2. You'll name one dwarf after yourself, making sure not to alter any previously named dwarfs.

  3. When your one year is finished, you'll compress your saved game to a zip file and upload it to this thread.

  4. An unmodded version of DF will be used (v0.28.181.40d)

  5. Please don't use a modded version. Although, feel free to manually change the graphic/tile set.

  6. When you're finished with your round, please include a screenshot of the work you've done as well as a brief description of any events that unfolded.

Dates:

  1. Anytime: You may enter play at any time. However...

  2. After Monday 29 @ 5am GMT: This is the cutoff date to be in the initial randomized round. After this day, if you wish to play, your name will simply be added to the end of the list.

  3. Monday 29 @ 4am GMT: The list of all players will be randomized, and the resulting list will be posted on this thread.

  4. Each player will get a (maximum) of one week to complete their one year of in-game play. If we don't hear from you for an extended period of time, we'll just continue from the last saved game.

Entry:
To participate, just post to this thread letting me know, and I'll add your name to the list.

Well, I am pretty new to DF, but I would like to join anyway if I can.

Also, we should discuss the starting items/skills. I suggest we use those outlined in the wiki tutorial:

I wish to take part in this time-travelling technology you seem to possess.

Sorry, after 24 years, I still don't have a thorough grasp of the English language. I meant to say that at 4am, I'll start generating the random list. I'll then post that list at 5am. I'm sure it'll only take a few minutes, but I wanted to give myself an hour.

If anyone puts there name in before 5am, I'll throw them into the mix.

Each dynasty should be posted with screenshots and a story. That should be in the rules or something.

I've been playing my first DF game and I like it so far. I still have a lot to get used to and figure out. Any tips on reducing processor use? My laptop's gets a little hot from playing the game. Also, how do you change the view between altitude levels easily? (Edit - I figured out to change the level view use < and >) Any tips for a beginner?

Depending on how long a year of in game time takes in real life, I may be willing to join in.

I haven't run into this problem. It seems to eat up about 10% of one core on both my laptop and desktop.

I usually work in this order:

1. Build stairs
2. Mine room for stockpiles and build
3. Mine room for workshops and build (you'll need to destroy the caravan first)
4. Build a door to seal off the refuse stockpile.
5. Build living quarters.
6. Build basic defenses
7. --- I'm still new, so this is where I start exploring other options ---

The game is really deep. I've just scratched the surface.

I second X-G. There should definitely be a rule on how to chronicle your reign of terror governance.

I agree with the storytelling bit, just like in the Elephants link X-G posted in the other thread.

Edgar: Maybe this Wiki article will help you.

I just finished up my first attempt on creating my very own dwarven empire. I held on as long as I could but there were these two blasted giant skeletal eagles that just kept picking all my dudes off until I finally got the hang of the military. I had a fairly nice layout of a slightly off center trading depot surrounded by the industrial stockpiles. I just couldn't manage to get good rooms set up for my guys. I lasted about 2 1/2 years before I decided it wasn't worth carrying on with the trial run any further. I think I maxed out at about 35 dwarves before those eagles started their guerrilla war. :-/

I think this time my focus will be on first providing housing down on sub level 7 or so with the workshops near the surface and the initial stockpiles up top.

What's with the snooty elf traders?

Alright, maybe I'll tinker around a little bit and see how it goes.

I'm up for joining the succession game. Sign me up, decepto. ;)

I'm heading to bed early tonight. I didn't anticipate the amount of homework I'd have. Plus, people aren't exactly queuing up at the last moment.

Upon using an uber sophisticated randomization method, here is the order of play.

1. Vanneto
2. gnolam
3. Edgar
4. X-G
5. Decepto

Vanneto, feel free to start tomorrow. Please have your game in by monday of next week. Good luck and Dwarfspeed.

I'd join if I could be slotted for next week (or the one after that), otherwise I'd be back in the military and with no free time.
I really like DF and I'm sad that I didn't have any time to play it since I joined the army.

I wouldn't have minded being added onto the end of the list but that's fine.

Currently I'm trying to get the hang of building a tower that's easily defensible. How do the Fortifications work in the game? It looks like you can place them anywhere but aren't they supposed to go next to a wall? I'm also having trouble with workers getting stuck in the stuff they're making. They're already thirsty from being stuck there. Hopefully the ramps and floors I said to build will be made in time to get them down.

Indeed I am. I had computer trouble. I will started playing. But I must warn you, I am a lousy fortress builder, don't expect the fortress to be anything special when I leave it. ;)

Damn, its been already a week, didn't notice that. I'll try to play this year as fast as possible. :-/

It's only been two days since the start time, relax and try to get a good setup going.

From my limited time playing so far I can offer this advice if you like :
Try to keep the same people working the same jobs so they get more experience as it greatly affects the quality and quantity of the work they produce. Miners can gain experience quickly when mining sandy areas. Reducing the distance workers have to walk to get to a stockpile from a resource and to a shop that uses the resource will increase efficiency and productivity. Try to get beds for everyone and make a room from it. You don't need to assign it to a particular person early in the game and they'll eventually claim one anyway. My dudes always complain about not having a well so if you can get a trader to sell you three metal bars you can fashion a chain from them with your blacksmith. A well also needs a bucket and a mechanism. Good luck, do us proud!

Yeah I just noticed that it says 29-9-2008 when Decepto posted... I am quite sure I saw 24-9-2008 yesterday. :P

Well I will certainly do my best, Ive built some fortresses in the past weeks, but nothing compared to what 'the pros' do. Damn, those are big!
