My new year resolution was to quit the internet.

I promised to shave my beard. And I did!
Wife didn't like that resolution too much, but it beats my normal resolution ("I will not hijack an airplane this year.").

I made on this year and it's to be more productive. (Basically it's been a while since I've finished any of my projects, so this year I want to release at lease one, if not two).

So... goes off to play Starcraft

No.

I already have goals that I want to reach before the end of 2008. No sense picking one and calling it a new years resolution.

Every 4 months or so (after each semester) i come up with a set of goals. Most of the time i achieve them. Sometimes i have to rework things. At the beginning of every week i come up with fine grained goals/schedule. I only ever get half of it done.. but that still makes me more productive than a lot of people.

Well, here's an update from last year.

  • Lose Weight - Started 2007 at 245 lbs, ended year at 219 lbs (was shooting to get down to 200). I will be continuing my goal from last year.

  • Study Japanese - Brought some kanji cards with me to study during my temp job in Massachusetts. Studied regularly for the first two months and then got off track. I'm not making this a resolution for this year.

  • Get a job in the game industry - Success! Now to try and do it again. Fingers crossed for Texas...

  • Improve my web skillz - Not much success here. Couldn't find the time. Not on my list for this year, but will try to do if time allows (tis an important skill these days)

  • Step into 3D programming - I studied the first 10ish lessons of the NeHe OpenGl tutorials. Unfortunately, that's as far as I got. Keeping it on my list for this year (great skill to have for the game industry)

  • Finish some top-notch freeware games - After I got the temp job, I hardly worked on any of my own projects except for hacks. I did however come up with a better system of maintaining ideas and keeping track of tech problems that I have a solution for (I usually forgot what I had done and redid a lot of work from project to project).

For 2008, I'm adding "Play games. Get up to speed on today's games." They told me at ILE that I had a good amount of tech knowledge and just needed to get up to speed on today's games. I suppose I can't complain. ;D

So my list for 2008 is as follows: Lose weight, get another job in the game industry, continue learning 3D programming, finish some top-notch freeware game(s), play more next-gen titles.

Obtain PhD. Go abroad for a post-doc position. Try not to get home-sick.
Not really new year's resolutions since all of those have been on the 2008 list for the past few years but anyway...

mine is to establish a stable income. I won't have student loans to lean on once I finish school. :-/

That, and I'd like to become more comfortable with 3d programming, angular motion/trig, and consistent speed between computers.

I did become 26 years old, now the new goal is 27 years.
Dividing 365 days by the number of files in my drawings folder, it reveals that I managed to practice drawing every 4.7 days (which is an improvement over previous years).
I did spend a lot less time on IRC and on forums.
Also didn't eat any fast food (except maybe one or two times) and did not drink any of that cheap ice tea. (Beer intake has increased instead.)
I did not start eating fruit for breakfast.
I still lost 3kg of weight, though I look fatter than before (must have lost muscles while at the same time gained fat (blaming it to the increased beer intake)).

So... for 2008. I have no idea. Trying to stay alive without getting insane.

Let's see

Quote:

1) Make GFWS officially GF. It seems as we both want that but neither has the guts to admit it.
2) Gain weight. I'm 1.84m and 65kg, she sometimes hurts herself against my bones :-X
3) Help GF lose some weight. I don't care much about her weight but it makes her happy.
4) get a decent raise at work
5) waste less time on refreshing forums
6) create a ray traced MMORPG

1) can be considered done, we've been living together for half a year :)
2) When I weighted myself day before Christmas I was at 62kg, no ideas what I am after all the parties and feasts I had (2x Christmas + 3x birthdays + new year in one week :-X) but I doubt I'm over 65kg.
3) She is as steady as I am in that area, unfortunately. Of course living separate to your parents and being able to eat whatever you like doesn't help much either
4) Well, I did as I moved away from web development to casino game development (worse job ever, quit after 1.5 months :P) to C++ client-server programming. Salary rised more than twice
5) Somewhat successful, though at work I still do it more than I should
6) Not exactly but I picked up WoW around three weeks ago and I've been hooked since :P Also those people who I was going to help ditched the whole idea of creating a game. Though another friend of mine has something that he tries to sell to some publisher. I'm not sure how far along is he, though.

For this year I'd like to continue with some of the last year promises:

1) I could still use some weight gain, though I doubt I succeed. It is really hard, you know
2) Take GF to ride bike/walk/swim more often, perhaps so she would loose and I would gain some
3) Even though I got a very nice raise I wouldn't say no to some more :P
4) I guess WoW and GF will keep me away from the forums at least during the time I'm at home :)
5) RT MMORPG would be nice though I probably won't have much time to do anything

And new stuff:
6) see if I could get a job in some other country

A friend in Ireland said that people there would hire me instantly and I'd be getting at least around 4x as much from day one as I do at the moment. It would also be a great experience.

I don't have any new years resolutions. However there are quite a few things I should get done this year. So I second this quote.
