Saucelifter in the Depot

I've finally added my current build of Saucelifter to the depot. It's a remake of the C64 Choplifter, by Broderbund. Check it out here:

The gameplay is complete, but I still might add some stuff, like music and various extras. Who knows?

This is one of my favorite Allegro games!

Yeah, this game is awesome. I still have it installed. :)

Now I can write a review!

Glad you're both enjoying it. :) I suppose I'm looking for a bit of feedback. If I am to do more work on it, what would be the most desired features, etc.?

Well, I honestly think the game is pretty solid by itself. If you want to add more features then I feel you should go with a new game "Saucelifter Plus" or something like that.

I would think the only way you could go with this basic game play would be... more powerups, new weapons, new enemies, larger playing fields, maybe a different type of level where you play as a tank and rescue people. Perhaps enhance the graphics with textures and more explosive effects, but I think the style that you have now is neat.

by the way, I like the game without music because I enjoy the sound effects.

I love this game, and I think that I agree that it is complete as it is and doesn't need any more features. A new game with similar gameplay, maybe a few different stages, would be great though.

BTW, the OpenGL version crashes on startup for me now. No big deal, because the other one works, just thought I'd let you know.

Yea, I'd much rather do a new game than keep extending this. ;) Some title music and victory etc. jingles may make it in, though.

Trent... argh. I'm using an older AllegroGL for the build, so I'll see about getting the latest and greatest and doing and update with it. Thanks...

Really cool game. Is there a list of keyboard commands somewhere? Haven't found a way to manually zoom in after zooming out with backspace.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's the six keys above the arrows. F is fps.

Cool game, but being unfamiliar with "Choplifter" it took me quite a while to figure out how to play and what to do.
The OpenGL version worked perfectly for me by the way.

I've played choplifter, but it took me a few tries before I figured out that I wasn't supposed to land on the triangle, but beside it. Maybe there could be a help page accessible from the main menu, with some hints as to how to play the game?

Slarti... bart... fast(?), torhu: Yes indeed, good points. This seems to be a sticking point for new players. I am thinking of adding a gameplay summary screen at the very least, or a tutorial mode for first-time players, with big blinking arrows pointing the way.

Slartibartfast.
You haven't read The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy? Sacrilege.

It doesn't have to be a very extensive explanation, but a list of controls and what they do, and an explanation of what you are supposed to do (bust the barracks buildings, pick up the aliens, drop them near the teleporter) would have gone a long way towards making the first 10-20 minutes of gameplay more enjoyable :)
