Bryce 5.0. For free! |

I don't think anybody else has posted, so I'll go ahead. Bryce 5.0 is available for free until September the 6th from it's current owners. The newest version is 5.5, so I guess this is quite recent software. I haven't tried it myself yet, I'll wait until my new computer arrives. From what I've heard it's a pretty decend landscape modeller, so perhaps we could all work towards a new rush of free games set in the vast outdoors? EDIT: System requirements are here. To summarise, a 500 Mhz CPU (whether G4 or Pentium), 256 mb of RAM and 100 mb of hard disk. I guess most people here meet that. EDIT2: and the Mac version comes as a yucky .sitx. So I guess I'll have to reach for a copy of Stuffit like some backward type. [My site] [Tetrominoes] |

I've been a fan of Bryce for a while, actually 5.0 has been around for AGES, but I don't know what new features are in 5.5. The only thing I don't like about bryce is that the renderer has always been dog slow. I'm actually subscribed to their newsletter so every once in a while I'll get an e-mail with free downloads of models, etc. By default it's pretty bland, so I would suggest finding extra texture packs. For 3D modeling however Byrce is not a good choice, it has primitives and add/subtract but no real way of editing geometry. It's more for finishing a scene with pre-rendered objects rather than creating them. ___________________________________ |

I tried it out a few days ago, and didn't really like it. The interface was confusing (mystery meat navigation?), the program ran at 640x480 maximized (so a lot of black on my 1600x1200), and the display was wireframe. I'm sure the latter two points can be changed, but with the first point I did not see any obvious ways. Marcello |

It has always looked nice for backgrounds and skyboxes, but I think it's too specialised and its functionality can be replicated in Blender scripts now. I'm downloading it anyway |

Hmm, well if anyone has any luck with the Mac version could they explain how they did it? Stupid Stuffit Expander keeps complaining of a format error while inspecting the .sitx file, which I've now downloaded three times. No wonder nobody in their right mind has used Stuffit for years. EDIT: ahhh, I had an old version of Stuffit. They can't even keep their proprietary file format under control. [My site] [Tetrominoes] |

There is a way to turn on OpenGL or D3D or their proprietary S3D?? rendering and increase the wireframe resolution when rotating or when the scene is static. Even so there is no accellearation when rendering. A simple scene with water and a mountain on my 3200+ takes about 32 seconds to do a quick render (not a full render). I would probably take about 1 to 1.5 mins to render fully, not to mention the scene is only 640x480. If I wanted to render a 1680x1050 scene I might as well leave my PC on overnight TH: I have no idea why it's failing to unstuff on your mac, I had no problem with the windows zip file though. Oh and it's technically two downloads, first you download bryce and register, then download the texture/object pack. Without textures you can't really do much [edit] ___________________________________ |

Steve: I believe 5.5 uses OpenGL but then you have to pay for the upgrade, which is their goal I presume |

Quote: NOTE: Bryce 5.0 does not run under Mac OS X Tiger (Mac OS 10.4 and above). Yeah, but a lot of people on the Mac forum where I first found out about this seem to be able to use it. It also seems to work okay for me now that I've got past the "enter your license key" stage — that was very crashy. Perhaps I won't bother tainting my new computer with this. What else is available in the way of free 3d modelling apps, beyond Blender + this? And does anybody have any tips for free CorelDraw-style (now that I'm trained in it and all) vector editors? Neat! Bryce is perfect for creating terrain tiles. -- |

Bryce is NOT a 3D modeler as I have pointed out, you can't really model very well with simple primitives and simple boolean operations such as add/subtract/group. It's only for rendering scenes. It is however as I pointed out very nice for sprites/tiles for games ___________________________________ |

I dl'ed something called L3DT from http://www.bundysoft.com/L3DT/ a week ago, it makes actual 3d terrains sorta OK. However, I'm having some trouble figuring out their heightfield file to try it in my own games. There's a viewer you can download to look at the terrains you generate, fly around at different altitudes etc. The free version is more limited than the $$$ version but it could be useful just the same. They all watch too much MSNBC... they get ideas. |

For heightmap generation there is always Terragen. -- |
