Write a book?

Do you ever get that urge to write a book? Like you'll come up with some excellent ideas, etc.. and think, "Wow, this would make a really good book!"
It usually happens when I'm depressed, which is probably not a good thing ::).

I've written stories and tales since... since I learned to write, basically.
I have a fantasy story/novel that is nearly done (has been for quite a while, actually) that I plan on releasing on-line when it is really done. I'll post a link by that time.
I usually write when I have the need to `escape' from the outside world and live, as it were, in my own fantasy.

I really want to write a book, but I don't have any talent for writing, and I can't get myself to even write a 50 page story.

That's why I'm programming, I can write a short story and make a long game. Though I haven't done that yet, I do have Aoni Commando in the back of my head.

Oh I always get ideas for books (if by books you mean fiction) which at first glance might seem like a good read. Then I try and write them down, and after the first paragraph or so I begin to realize that the idea actually sucks, or more common, that the idea doesn't really expand much beyond the first paragraph...:-/

I once started a story in a fanstasy world where some Orchs were escaping from a destroyed home.

I wrote one page before I gave up. It's really no fun to read that page.

I'd post some here - the proze is reasonably good, even if the story and setting are riddled with cliches (that's on purpos, though), but the version I have on my homepage atm is very old and contains a LOT of spelling errors (a lot more than are in my current version).

You can find two poems there, through the link which currently has no image.

And I think I've past 600 posts now.

I write stuff all the time - poems, short stories, rants, you name it. Just ask.

The following article went on to be the cover story of that issue.

Well it was spoof on one of the crappiest (but most successful) soaps out here.

You will find it Here

Warning You might not be able to make any sense out of it at all coz you have neevr seen the soap and you are not missing anything.

I'm good (I think) at writing essays, or articles, but not fiction.. I wish I could..

Sometimes I try writing a short story, but I don't relly Like short stories; just when you're getting into them they quit! :)

Do you guys like Chuck Palahniuk (of FightClub fame)? I read an interview with him where he said he wrote his first books at work, when the boss wasn't looking :) Very 'FightClub' in itself, that.. hmm.. now that's a thought.. my boss(es) don't really know what I'm doing anyway

I read what must've been the shortest short story ever a few days ago - "Star Light" by Isaac Asimov. It was three and a half pages long.

Related question: If you could write any kind of book you liked, what would it be called - which writer would it remind the most of..

I asked a friend this question, and he answered "How I Invented C++", in the style of Bjarne Starstroup (orwhatshisname) :)

It would be called "32 Days To Hell" and would not be in the style of anyone, and it would be so off-the-wall that nobody would even try to finish it to see what style it was written in :D.

There's some Spanish guys doing a remake of the classic 8 bit game Head over Heels. They had attempted to write a "History" but the English was so bad and the story generally lame that I offered to rewrite it in better English!! I also expanded on it quite a bit... nothing spectacular
I think it's at:

(Sorry I don't know how to make an active link in a message)

Any book I might write would be either a scifi or fantasy, or maybe a bit of both...

I've been writing a little bit of Sci-Fi recently. I'm still on the first story but I have some more in my head. One or two bookfuls would be nice to get finished. Published would be a nice bonus, for the ego and the cash.

If I'd write a book it might be called something like "Pocket Gnomes" or "Zen Gardening In Three Easy Steps!!!!!!!", and it would be rather Pratchettian. In fact, I might consider changing my name to Achmed the I Just Get These Headaches and write a funny book about cats.

I always get cool ideas for stories, but its so much hard work to actually put them into a story that is enjoyable and readable, and that you actually finish.
Actually, I think that wanting to write stories is something that we all have in common (as game programmers that is). Its the urge to create a world. I know when I was younger, I always wrote short stories, and made up characters, and stuff like that. When I was really young I would take a piece of paper and design amusment parks or shopping malls, etc on them. I also when through a phase where I loved making up board games and then getting my parents to play them with me.
Writing a game is just another way to express your creativity. Artists draw, musicians compose, writers write, and we program games.
I wish I could write good stories, but I can't seem to stick with it long enough, so game programming is a natural outlet: you can write a story for a game easily, and you can create an entire world for your characters to live in.
Anyway, I think I'm rambling now...its kinda late, and I've been studying calculus all day, so my brain is pretty well mush.

I have some story ideas, but I want to turn those into adventure games.

[edit]
It's about an old city, that is in the middle of the enemy territory. These bad guys want to invade it. There are ogres, elves, and all these beings.
No more details :P
[/edit]
The last time I printed it, there where about 100 A4 pages :o

I like to write for Pixelate ;) As for actual stories, I'm with Trumgottist (I was going to post that but he beat me to it :)). Why write a story when you can write an interactive story?

I would if I knew enough about it. Goes double if I thought I could get it published.

Mind you, I suspect it would lose much usefulness when the API becomes obsolete with 5.0 ...
