1.4 beta autoloaded on me. I wonder if they've fixed it so it doesn't black screen every 5 minutes ;) on the plus side where you sleep is your next spawn point.

Any idea when baf's server will be updated as it won't let you on?

23yrold3yrold

on the plus side where you sleep is your next spawn point.

Oh; nice! Saving at the inn, old-school! :D

Neil Walker

Thought I'd try it on 'far'. I lasted 3 seconds before it crashed. Glad to see they got their priorities right in adding the ability to ride a dog instead of fixing bugs.

BAF

Server should auto update, probably around midnight.

Also, why did the other thread get locked? ???:-(

BAF said:

Uh yeah, I was updating the OP with videos and such for other people to join? ??? I understand it's ML's site and he's free to do whatever he wants, but an explanation would be nice. :-/

Samuel Henderson

Hurray I have a wolf!

23yrold3yrold

Can't connect to server; out of date. :(

Guess I'll go dog hunting in single player.

Neil Walker

Still not working. What am I going to do tonight! Come on Baf get it sorted ;D

But still, it was nice of them to offer a choice of downloading.

BAF

Weird, it auto-updated, but the script failed to restart the server properly. Anyhow, I just restarted it and it's running 1.4 in its entire buggy crappiness. :P

23yrold3yrold

I see no change in the (pre-existing, for me) crappiness so far, though the server did run just well enough for me to farm some actual sand of my own. :o Much obliged to whoever keeps donating sand; every little bit helps. Maybe one day I'll be able to connect well enough to do more than 2 rows ...

Neil Walker

I wish minecraft wouldn't auto update :(

I just set up my minecraft.jar with all the extensions I wanted, and what has minecraft just done? downloaded all the jars again but it's the same version as I had!

Tell a lie, it says the same version but it's different. Mod Loader now causes minecraft to not load.

Crazy Photon

It doesn't autoupdate if you use the new launcher.

Neil Walker

what new launcher?

btw, I wish they'd update automap mod to work with multi-player maps, I'd fleece baf's server dry of everything useful in double quick time :)

Thomas Fjellstrom

what new launcher?

The original Minecraft.jar file you downloaded, that is just a launcher that updates from the site. If you don't update it, you'll never get updates to it, like the ones where it won't force an update anymore.

MiquelFire

Or the exe file. If you play from the web site, you'll get auto updates.

Neil Walker

I'm running windows exe, it just downloads when I start it up.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I'm running windows exe, it just downloads when I start it up.

It won't ever update that exe though. AFAIK. Just the .jar files it downloads. You need to redownload the exe to update it.

Crazy Photon

what new launcher?

Look at the screenshots and download the new .exe if needed.

Technically, it hasn't, since that's the remixed version(never heard of it!). Here's the original from the old minecraft thread before it was locked by the dark gods...

I miss my thread. There, I said it. :'(

As long as we're posting Minecraft videos:

Heh, I like that one. :)

In other news, the server is still impossibly laggy. :( Which I guess technically isn't news. I really want to continue my work .... stupid game.

Neil Roy

Dario ff, nice video. :)

Has anyone tried out Infiniminer, the game Minecraft is based off of? It's free. Going to download and try it out.

Neil Walker

I've seen a few mock films, but I wonder if anyone has recreated any sets of films or games? I think the start of Bioshock with flames in the sea and a plane leading to the underground lift would be quite cool.

Dario ff

I think the start of Bioshock with flames in the sea and a plane leading to the underground lift would be quite cool.

Ahem? ;)

Thomas Fjellstrom

The work that went into that :o even with mods and cheats is insane. Even if they used a map editor then uploaded to a server is still kinda crazy.

Neil Walker

I guess I'm the last person to have seen this, but I watched the (yogscast four part walkthrough of) Wizard of Bergmund on Sunday (haven't tried it yet), but it looks brilliant and it was very entertaining. Surely something like this is what the 'real' minecraft will end up being.

Farmed enough sand to finish a quadrant; yay! Did this on my lunch break; if it's still usable when I get home I'll put a solid start into the next one.

Hope you don't mind no more beaches for five miles in all directions ...

EDIT: Connection is back to being poop. :'(

CGamesPlay

The adventure map idea is pretty cool. The writing and production behind that podcast wasn't great, so I definitely feel like it's possible to do better. Wonder what I can draft up :)

Neil Walker

Do you know if you can use multiple mod loaders?

I've got minimap which requires Risugami's modloader, but I want to use SDK's gun mod but that requires a different mod loader.

Slartibartfast

Ace of Spades

I've tried every server and none of them work.
Therefore, I hereby declare Ace of Spades as a POS until such time as further evidence regarding the value of Ace of Spades arrives.

Neil Walker

I got onto most of them, but declare it crap.

Based purely on the fact that it takes 100 attempts to get from the sea to the first block because you have to press W, SPACE and CTRL in the right order between 5 and 27 milliseconds apart.

23yrold3yrold

1.5 just launched. Apparently there's been some rails changes? I'll have to look into that; my current project is a huge subway ...

CGamesPlay

Yeah, powered rails (when powered, they boost a moving cart; else, the stop a moving cart) and detector rails (which are pressure plates that don't stop a cart).

Thomas Fjellstrom

Oh my fucking god that rocks.

J-Gamer

Is there any info on their recipes? The minecraft wiki isn't up to date.

It's probably on the forums.

Oh? Is that why I can't play for more than 5 minutes without the game freezing? :P

The server should auto update. Just wait for it.

(You will need to update your servers as well)

Somehow I doubt that. :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

Somehow I doubt that.

BAF has set it to auto update.

CursedTyrant

Oh, I didn't know that. :)

Neil Black

Never underestimate the awesomeness of BAF.

I just took the time to learn how to make minecart boosters yesterday, and now I don't need them anymore... I'm happy and sad at the same time.

23yrold3yrold

Single-player is slower for me. I don't have high hopes for our server, but if I can finally connect decently that would be a plus.

The achievements are pretty basic; I opened them all up in like 5 minutes, but .... apparently we can now mount and fly pigs? Um ... cool? :)

BAF

I can fire off an update manually. It should check for updates on its own at midnight every night. Last time it auto updated, but never restarted the server for some reason (pretty sure it was just a script error introduced when CGames rearranged things, so I would have fixed it then).

[edit]
I just ran the auto-update script manually, and it all worked. So auto-updates will work in the future as well, but maybe I need to come up with a better time of day to do the checks... anyone know when notch usually posts the server updates?

Onewing

I'm having this craving of recreating the Final Fantasy 1 world in minecraft...

23yrold3yrold

Heh; that would actually work. ;D but then you gotta do them all through VI ...

Neil Black

The game is definitely faster now. I can play with m view distance set on normal now.

Dario ff

The achievements are pretty basic; I opened them all up in like 5 minutes

The "achievements" are mostly a tutorial. People are pretty lost playing Minecraft for the 1st time. I had to check the wiki every 5 minutes before. :-/

23yrold3yrold

Yes, I know. Just funny to call them achievements. I would call them quests, but hey ...

Thomas Fjellstrom

Do I really need to post this again?

video

23yrold3yrold

Yes, because I hadn't seen it yet.

+1.

In other news, I wish I had more gold. I can't try the boosters. :(

Neil Walker

I just had the oddest thing happen

I have a problem too on my house in baf's world but nothing to do with yours, that giant cube reminded me.

I've started to build a tower for my house but when I got so far up it won't let me build and when I look where I want to place a block a wireframe box appears but its about 4x4 squares in size. What's all that about? If you visit -656,79,-100 (i.e. the tower near the house next to miner willy) you'll find giant invisible blocks that you have to smash away forever to clear?

btw, I wonder if that 'advanded opengl' might make far distance work for more than 5 seconds.....
[edit]I lasted 2 minutes in the dark, then I looked at the sky and the screen went blank.

23yrold3yrold

Wow. I am getting positively SWARMED at night on the server. :o I guess I need to go make a sword ...

Ben Delacob

Lately, when I'm the only one on the server, I can venture into the dark woods and not a single enemy bothers me. I am continually amazed that the game manages to run as well as it does with all the bugs. I guess they're just waiting somewhere for 23.

Neil Walker

After Evert pointed me at Zan's mini-map I can't live without out, but there's no 1.5 update and it doesn't work anymore (mod loader is at 1.5 though) :(

Except traditional missing chunks never included entities or parts of the underground tunnels and caverns. And this was much larger than a single chunk.

Missing chunks can include entities. They just are stuck in a falling loop.

LennyLen

Lately, when I'm the only one on the server, I can venture into the dark woods and not a single enemy bothers me.

I've had that happen to me a few times in the past, even with other people on.

kdevil

Wow. I didn't think it was possible, but I've actually run out of cobblestone. :o Anyone have a few large chests of cobblestone they want emptied?

CGamesPlay

Yeah, a "missing chunk" is where you get in the falling loop. Notice how Tomasu still has the block selection indicator, even though the blocks are invisible. Tomasu, you can walk over that and the terrain collides normally, but it's invisible. I have the same issue pretty frequently. It looks neat though.

kdevil said:

The chest directly under my biosphere has several stacks you're welcome to. Feel free to leave me some sand, since I still need lots of Sandstone. :)

Thomas Fjellstrom

omasu, you can walk over that and the terrain collides normally, but it's invisible. I have the same issue pretty frequently. It looks neat though.

Yeah, I noticed that. All the stuff seems to be there, and you can even remove blocks, but you just can't see it.

23yrold3yrold

Well, some jerk decided to flood my tunnel entrance (which means flood it to the bedrock, since it's all stairs down). Jerk. :P

In better news, someone left me 8 stacks of sand (kdevil, I assume). Much thanks! ;D

Thomas Fjellstrom

Well, some jerk decided to flood my tunnel entrance (which means flood it to the bedrock, since it's all stairs down). Jerk.

Its not that hard to fix. But really, shit happens when you don't know theres something there.

23yrold3yrold

I'm also getting attacked a lot. I lost all my materials so no weapons, no armor ... construction on the server is a PITA right now. :(

Thomas Fjellstrom

I just connected and it was great :o

But yeah, reports are that theres a lot more mobs again.

CGamesPlay

Minecraft should have some like global weather trends and that sort of thing. Like, it's raining everywhere on every server, or there's no mobs for a week and then a massive ambush everywhere. Could be fun.

Neil Black

Minecraft should have some like global weather trends and that sort of thing. Like, it's raining everywhere on every server, or there's no mobs for a week and then a massive ambush everywhere. Could be fun.

It could be fun, but I'd prefer that sort of thing be adjustable on the server level rather than sweeping through every server.

23yrold3yrold

Ah, I see. Someone's making a large underground redstone something-or-other and mined into my water flow, cutting it off in a most inconvenient way. Oh well, fixed. :)

Neil Walker

if anyone's interested, zan's minimap is finally 1.5 compatible :)

It could be me, but it seems to run a lot slower with the minimap running that it used to (threads on or off).

kdevil

In better news, someone left me 8 stacks of sand (kdevil, I assume)

Yup, I figured a 1-to-1 trade for cobblestone was fair. Now I can get started on the interior of my volcano lair!

23yrold3yrold

Half the lower section is filled out now. I'm going to stay after work and do a little more today just because the connection from here is more reliable for some reason.

EDIT: Server went kaput? :'( Also, I hate monsters spawning on my project; no torches to keep them off. :( I need coal and more sand ...

I wandered around a bit too; nice pagoda, whoever that is up north.

MiquelFire

Maybe step up the speed? (if you have an ISP that works that way)

[edit] Smelt tree trunks for charcoal.

23yrold3yrold

Nah, the connection is crappy here too, just sees more good connections than home. That just changed, so I'm heading out. :)

Thomas Fjellstrom

It seems shaw has a SERIOUS latency problem in many areas of its network. So if you're on shaw, you may have problems with games, voip, or any other app that always needs low latency. Its especially worse if you're using your upload for anything. Even using half of your upload will jack up your latency a bunch.

Someone I know here in edmonton is talking with someone at shaw who actually seems to know what he's doing over there, so this problem[1] might resolve itself in time.

Crazy Photon

Was just curious to get in and see what's going on, and the wooden house is gone ???

ImLeftFooted

The one on the water? Yeah I saw that -- it looks like a suicide guy blew up on his deck.

My sky tower seems to be a bit ransacked. The trees were taken out and my chests are all empty now.

No one seems to be online -- kinda boring playing online by myself.

Vanneto

I'd be online more, if the damn game would run on more than 5 FPS. It runs fine sometimes, but mostly it doesn't.

I came back to the spawn today thanks to Crazy Photon. Saw Dario's house. I doubt that was a creeper, isn't the damage too big?

Crazy Photon

I was just there with vanneto, but the server's started to lag horribly...

I don't think it was just suicide, the damage is too big:

{"name":"604007","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/a\/9\/a99da052006d206362d65a5dd0d598ff.png","w":1366,"h":716,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/a\/9\/a99da052006d206362d65a5dd0d598ff"}604007

ImLeftFooted

The damage looks weird -- looks it's more likely to be a bug than vandalism.

kdevil

Looks like the place burned down. That would explain why the stairs and fences are still intact.

Neil Black

I keep getting logged out every few minutes. Not sure why.

MiquelFire

Yea, the house got burned down.

23yrold3yrold

Oh yeah, I saw that. It looked really odd because the water itself seems to have left a hole. I was hoping nobody was vandalizing. :(

Creeper took out a small part of my biosphere. Little bugger.

EDIT: Just to be different, here's an "interior" shot. Poached extra torches from my home base; hopefully this'll keep the spawns off me. At least I got some sand farming in ... and those creepers have left some rather nice holes across the landscape ...

Neil Walker

is there a way to raise water? everytime I try and do something like a moat the water only fills when I dig downwards across the length.

23yrold3yrold

You'll have to bucket it in ...

gnolam

Minecraft's water handling is pretty annoying. Removing an island can lead to huge gaps in the water. Doing any kind of construction in water can leave you with annoying currents around partially filled tiles. Etc.
Oh, and whatever algorithm is used to determine if farmland tiles have access to water is completely broken. :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

I would say every single "algorithm" in the game is broken in some way.

Neil Black

I have an urge to build a mob spawner, but for one thing they're ugly, and for another thing they're time-consuming.

I put a water elevator into the entrance to my mine.

23yrold3yrold

S'up mofo's, need more sand!

Making a push to finish the bottom half before I go to Jamaica Saturday. Top half will be glass, so still need some sand to finish .... thankfully much less.

Neil Black

I've got a few stacks of sand lying around. Where would you like them?

23yrold3yrold

There's a chest directly under the biosphere. Thanks, dude. :)

Neil Black

I don't know where the biosphere is.

EDIT:

Nevermind, I found it. Enjoy your sand.

Neil Walker

I just accept the water on the assumption that it is the best algorithm they could use without compromising speed.

Michael Jensen

I don't think speed has much to do with any of the poor/broken algorithms. Does anybody else notice that lava doesn't seem to glow as bright in 1.5_01?

Thomas Fjellstrom

Anyone seem to notice that when a new user joins, it tends to lag everyone else out while that joining user pretty much causes the server to do nothing but send new blocks to the joiner? ie: the server seemingly has no idea how to properly handle more than one user at a time?

Any other fancy features in the game don't much work half the time. And the only "bugs" that seem to get "fixed" are things like leaf decay. As if that really mattered that much.

Thomas Fjellstrom

That is very unlikely. The horrible lag has already been brought to their attention on numerous occasions.

All they do is paper over simple bugs and ignore the bad ones. And of course add new features.

Vanneto

Features are opium to the masses. I'd enjoy it too, but the lag is like a police officer keeping me from enjoying my opium. :-X

BAF

It's "beta" software. Typically, one stops adding new features and fixes bugs during a beta. If you want to add new features, break things left and right, and leave them broken until you feel like fixing them, then label it correctly. :-X

Notch just needs to grow up and recognize that this isn't a hobby anymore, it's his full time job. And as such, it requires doing things you don't want to do (fixing the hard bugs instead of adding new features).

ImLeftFooted

He doesn't really need to. He already has his money, there's no incentive to bother.

Neil Black

Isn't the next release supposed to include a bunch of bug fixes?

Thomas Fjellstrom

Isn't the next release supposed to include a bunch of bug fixes?

Most bug fixes so far have only been to fix new features they just added the previous couple releases.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Yeah, I've tried a couple times, no workie.

I can't connect either... kdevil, the git log says you were able to connect on Sunday (you might have gotten booted before you noticed though). Somebody named errolpl was there just yesterday...

Where's the subway? I saw the rail and cart system by spawn, but it doesn't work.

If you tried it a while ago, I updated the thing recently to use the new gold auto tracks. The old booster system would bug out once in a while because it relied on constantly moving carts - I'm not sure if it was split between chunks so that may have been a factor. Does it still not work? The carts need to be placed snug against the wall to go.

Neil Walker

forget that, 5 seconds after posting it was fixed. Ignore this post unless you want to read the history ;)

Slartibartfast

The solution in that case is to view the revision history of the Wiki entry ;D

Back from Jamaica! .....

... can't log onto the server ...

FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Neil Black

Super-busy finals week. No time to play Minecraft.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!

kdevil

It was nice and fast after it was restarted back on Tuesday, then it gradually got slower and slower...
Maybe we need a script to restart the server every day or so.

I hear 1.6 is supposed to fix a lot of bugs, so hopefully a fix for whatever's causing this will be included.

ImLeftFooted

I designed a pretty cool train station system on another server. The cart comes up and waits for about 10 seconds, after-which it goes. If someone gets in it goes right away.

I would build it on the a.cc server but it just takes way too many resources and mining is just super boring. What is the chance allowing a subsidy from the powers that be for a good train system?

Thomas Fjellstrom

If you can get Bamccaig to not whine and complain about it, I don't really mind someone cheating a little to get a decent train system setup.

GameCreator

I don't really mind someone cheating

:o

What's the world coming to when a person can't be expected to swing at dirt for several hours a day?

ImLeftFooted

Is the server down right now? It's mc.baf.cc right?

CGamesPlay

I've set up a server at mc.cgamesplay.com. This server doesn't have anything now (except more RAM than the poor VM that mc.baf.cc is on). Later on tonight, I'll add in territory and allow people to claim areas for themselves. This will include a modest amount of space in the central marketplace area, as well as a huge amount of space in the rural areas. In general, if you build something in the city area in the first few days while the server is nubile and volatile, don't get disappointed if a public building takes imminent domain. Later on I'll protect certain parts of the marketplace if you want to run a shop or just crash in the city. If you walk for a minute or two in any direction, though, take as much space as you like.

Once the server gets started and there's some major landmarks and what not, I'll subsidize a public transit system. This means that I'll put rails and roadways in using MCEdit.

Regarding item spawning: None. However, there will be subsidized depots for necessities. I'll provide unlimited quantities of certain items like stone tools, torches, ladders, signs, railways, and redstone. If you want diamond tools, you'll have to go mine for them. I'm undecided about providing unlimited iron tools, but I suspect I won't.

OK, so log onto mc.cgamesplay.com, and go build stuff! I'll be on later on tonight, setting up the central marketplace.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Yeah, um, I just joined, and its already lagging. So, yeah.

Edgar Reynaldo

Geez, you guys are really dedicated by consistently playing a game that lags and kicks you off the server all the time. :-/ The idea of minecraft sounds fun, but actually playing it doesn't. I remember getting into Dwarven Fortress for a while, but the enemy/combat system kind of sucked.

Neil Black

Geez, you guys are really dedicated by consistently playing a game that lags and kicks you off the server all the time.

1) I personally haven't had much of a problem... the server ran fine when I actually had time to play.

2) It's a beta. It'll get fixed.

CGamesPlay

Yeah, um, I just joined, and its already lagging. So, yeah.

This one is on EC2, on a small instance (1.7 GB RAM).

Thomas Fjellstrom

This one is on EC2, on a small instance (1.7 GB RAM).

I don't think more power can fix the fatal flaws ;)

CGamesPlay

The map (not live updated) is here: http://mc.cgamesplay.com/

gnolam

The lag is ridiculous, but this one at least has undeveloped areas. I'll give it a shot. :)

Vanneto

Got no lag on this server (yet).

Neil Walker

Right, I've now got two accounts for minecraft in my house and friend who has one too, so I want to set up a simple windows server. A few questions:

How does anyone here do it, is it easier to run one of the helpers like mcMyAdmin or just run the server from the command line?

How do you run the server as either classic or survival mode?

Ultimately I'd like to add some interactive NPC's and state based actions like in some of the adventure games such as survival island, etc. How do you do this?

23yrold3yrold

No lag on mc.cgamesplay.com here either, but is mc.baf.cc down for good or something? :(

REVISION: I lied. I break blocks on mc.cgamesplay.com, blocks come back. Bring back BafWorld so I can finish my damn sphere!

Thomas Fjellstrom

Damn it, I Want to play, but I'm supposed to be giving my hands a rest. Otherwise I should be working on other more important things :(

CGamesPlay

No lag on mc.cgamesplay.com here either, but is mc.baf.cc down for good or something?

I can go and reset the server, but the box that mc.baf.cc is on is actually being phased out. I can provide a full history of the map, though :)

Thomas Fjellstrom

Steal the map, and maybe load it up on another minecraft server ;D

Crazy Photon

Can we get a downloadable version of what's on BAF's server, if it is going to be phased out?

Neil Walker

BAF's mc must live on forever, it took me 4 nights to create my Manic Miner statue!

kdevil

REVISION: I lied. I break blocks on mc.cgamesplay.com, blocks come back.

Is that everywhere, or just the spawn area? Because that confused me at first, too.

CGamesPlay

The spawn area is not protected or anything. This sort of glitch happens because the server is sending you chunks, but not listening to your actions. After some time the server snaps back to consciousness and all the blocks you destroyed will disappear and drop their drops.

Thomas Fjellstrom

It doesn't always catch up though. Sometimes it will just not notice some blocks you broke while it was being brain dead.

Neil Black

the box that mc.baf.cc is on is actually being phased out

Aw, really? What little Minecraft time I've had lately has been used trying to finish up my castle.

Ah well, on to further ventures.

MiquelFire

Doesn't mean that mc.baf.cc isn't being moved to another box. Maybe it's just being upgraded.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Doesn't mean that mc.baf.cc isn't being moved to another box. Maybe it's just being upgraded.

Nope. the box its on, is being dropped like a rock. They are moving their stuff from that box to Amazon EC2 as VMs. And CGames has setup a replacement minecraft server already. But doesn't seem interested in loading it up with the old map.

CGamesPlay

I am not especially interested in loading up the old map on the new server. I don't particularly want to delete the old map, either. I'll post the git repo someplace accessible later on today. After that, if anybody wants me to import structures from it and can use MCEdit to make a brush, then I'm game :)

Mokkan

I actually think a new map sounds fun. The one on mc.baf.cc was getting a little wonky. Also, your new server is a lot less laggy for me, CGP.

BAF

I've been dabbling with bukkit on my private server, and there are a bunch of cool plugins. Redstone circuits and multiverse come to mind.

Multiverse lets you run multiple worlds simultaneously, so you could run the old mc.baf.cc world alongside the current one (I actually have a copy of mc.baf.cc from a couple months ago running under multiverse). Then you can build a portal between the two (and if you have an economy plugin, you can set a price for going back and forth). You could also build a rail-less transportation system using portals too.

My private server hasn't been used by more than 3 or 4 people simultaneously, but it's got a handful of plugins and doesn't seem to ever lag, even with tons of TNT. I'm not sure why mc.baf.cc is so crappy, locally I'm running almost identical hardware. I suspect maybe xen/xenserver just sucks (my local one is running under a Linux guest on Hyper-V).

Thomas Fjellstrom

I'd try hosting a server here at home, but my connection is shit. Shaw claims its 25/2.5 now, but I don't even get the 15/1 it used to be.

CGamesPlay

La la la. I installed Bukkit and some mods. If you're in the town, creepers won't explode! Also, TNT won't work. I moved the spawn point to inside the (in progress) inn. Feel free to help make it look nice. The upstairs patio definitely needs some decoration.

Commands include the harmless ones listed here.

The logic I'm using for controlling subsidizing items is this: if the item is easy but tedious to come across, I will subsidize it. The biggest exception here is minecart equipment, which will get added in for the good of the community.

Neil Black

Thursday evening I might have time to check it out, after I've finished my more difficult exams.

23yrold3yrold

As much as I had no great work done on Baf's server, I rather dislike constantly starting over. On my home machine, I can still get underground using an old passage I made like a year ago.

I like the beds since it lets you edit your individual spawn point, so maybe now everything won't get clumped up. I'll give the new place a go. Time to make yet another sphere. Does sandstone count for "subsidizing"?

CGamesPlay

Sand is subsidized. There's a big depot filled with raw materials for everyone to use.

23yrold3yrold

Where's this at? I only see the cabin with the stairs down ...

Vanneto

I lost 50 iron ingots today because of my stupidity. Not to mention a lot of other stuff. :-/

Chris: I'd tell you the coordinates, but I can't login due to Bad Login. :P

EDIT:
Here you go:
173, 75, 85

I hope I got them right. I had to remember them quickly then the lag covered the screen with red.

Thomas Fjellstrom
Vanneto said:

Yeah, I almost lost a bunch of important stuff today. But I was being paranoid and decided to dig sideways before down, and what do you know, had I just dug down, I'd have fallen into lava.

I just died though. Didn't loose anything that important luckily. I tend to store all my good shit in chests when ever I get enough to store. Got a stack and a bit of iron, 3 diamonds (used up 3 diamonds for the pickaxe that got all that iron), and a bunch of other random stuff.

Got stuck in town at night, with creepers outside.. decided to just disconnect rather than waiting for the creeper to blow up the wooden building I was in.

Vanneto

I thought creepers don't explode in town?

Thomas Fjellstrom
Vanneto said:

OOh, I forgot about that. I thought maybe they didn't spawn in town, but obviously they do.

CGamesPlay

Where's this at? I only see the cabin with the stairs down ...

You might be at the old spawn point? Near the "Homeless Shelter and deep mine"? Go southeast from there. See the map.

Vanneto said:

Protip: "/pos".

They don't spawn in the lighted areas, and there's a fence on ne side of town. They can come form the forest next to town though. Creepers won't blow up in town, but zombies and spiders and skeletons are still a threat. As more buildings get put up in town, more roads will get built, streetlights will be added, fences will be upgraded to walls...

gnolam

The lag is just too awful. Don't think I can keep this up. :(

Thomas Fjellstrom
gnolam said:

I've actually found the new server quite a bit better than the old one. Some lag here and there, but nothing like the old one.

But then this one is still quite a bit smaller than the old one.

BAF

As I've been saying all along, I blame minecraft, and not the box it's hosted on. :-X

BAF said:

QFT.

Minecraft, as fun as it is, is a buggy piece of trash.

Crazy Photon

Hey CGames, can you open the door of the spawn house? since it's in the spawn area, it seems to be protected - players aren't able to open the door...

CGamesPlay

Yeah, I removed the spawn protection. It was a left-over from me copying the minecraft scripts from the old server. Sorry about that!

Neil Walker

See the map

ooh, that looks bonny. How do you get that running, I'm about to embark on setting up a little private server and this would be nice.

CursedTyrant

I tried logging in today, but nobody was online.

kdevil

Out of curiosity, how often does that map update?

CGamesPlay

@Neil: it's Minecraft Overviewer and I will be installing some add-ons as well in the future.

kdevil said:

Exactly once every time I run the script.

[append]

I don't always get the hundredth post, but when I do, I edit my post to brag about it.

GameCreator

How about when you get the 201st post?

23yrold3yrold

Can't connect on my lunch break. :( I feel like I'm playing WoW back in the old days ...

kdevil

I haven't been able to connect for about a day or so. Can't wait until this thing is out of beta and actually consistently playable :-/ .

Matthew Leverton

Is it hosted on the PSN? ???

ImLeftFooted

I'm just building my own world. Too much hassle dealing with the internet.

PS.
What's a good mac video recording software to use for minecraft demos?

Thomas Fjellstrom

Thats the funny part, if you're running it via your own server, you'll still see lag. I do on my own server over GbE. Its totally fucking stupid how bad the SMP code must really be.

BAF

I don't see too much lag on my local server for the most part, which is very surprising to me. Usually Sevalecan is the only other person on there - maybe he'll chime in on the lag situation.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I wouldn't say it was a super common thing. but it did happen a few times.

CGamesPlay

This was Notch's fault: I forgot to restart the server after doing maintenance.

BAF

I wouldn't say it was a super common thing. but it did happen a few times.

I was referring to my local one (barfthedog.net). mc.baf.cc was horrible. I split the blame between xenserver and notch.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I knew that, and i was talking about a local server i set up as well.

ImLeftFooted

Once I made myself an op the lag went away.

Ben Delacob

Since I last logged in, my dogs are gone, a jack o lantern is beside my chest that had pumpkins in it and I don't have permission to edit anything in the place (Snowie0wl's dog house). Is this because of some immature kid?

CursedTyrant

Last time I was there, your dogs were all inside, and I am absolutely certain I closed the door behind me. Unless the server didn't register that.

Neil Walker

Once you tame dogs, I thought they stayed with you?

CGamesPlay

Since I last logged in, my dogs are gone, a jack o lantern is beside my chest that had pumpkins in it and I don't have permission to edit anything in the place (Snowie0wl's dog house). Is this because of some immature kid?

I was playing with your area: I set up a region and defined you as the owner. After inspecting the logs, I spelled your name wrong. I set you as the proper owner now, which means you'll be the only person who can build in your area (it's slightly larger than your house, right click while holding spider silk for more info).

As for the dogs, they were there when I last played with the server (last night). I don't know if dogs stay permanently, though. Also, the jack o lantern was there when I found it.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Can people tell who owns what area and the size of said area? Without randomly trying to mine blocks? And can you see the outline of your own owned area?

CursedTyrant

(it's slightly larger than your house, right click while holding spider silk for more info)

I believe that's what he meant by that. Must be some weird mod stuff or something.

CGamesPlay

It's called WorldGuard, and it's pretty sweet. As far as an outline goes, there's a mod that puts this information on the online map, but I don't have it installed yet.

Ben Delacob

Ah thanks, I was hoping it wasn't intentionally ruined. I knew my name would get me into trouble eventually with that zero. I guess I might have put the jack-o-lantern down and forgot about it ???. Maybe there's another bug when you save below your dogs or something.

EDIT:
It looks like someone:
killed my dogs (thinking they were enemies or trying to take them?)
took pumpkins, maybe a few mushrooms, not sure what else
left one jack-o-lantern on the ground
I had maybe 1-3 diamonds but now I have a diamond hoe! ???
did not mess with other valuables

Maybe they're new or thought it was all for public use. How odd.

Neil Black

Weeee! We have a server up again, and I have free time.

There's a nice big sandy spot right next to the sea. I think I'm gonna build some sort of port there, if that all right.

LennyLen

I might try tethering my girlfriend's MacBook to my phone later and see how well I can play that way.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I want to reserve a large chunk of ocean/lake. like 50x50. Some place thats at least 5-10 blocks deep.

23yrold3yrold

I would love to reserve a bit, 50-50 over an ocean as well. If the server actually cooperates I'll use it too. I couldn't find the boxes with the subsidized materials though; I only found tools. Sand/cobblestone/wood would be much appreciated if I'm going to copy my work on the old server ...

REVISION: Found the raw materials shed. You might wanna refill a couple of these. :)

CGamesPlay

Maybe they're new or thought it was all for public use. How odd.

Well, at least it won't happen again. You're the only one who can build in the house or access the chests. I can't speak for the dogs, though.

I want to reserve a large chunk of ocean/lake. like 50x50. Some place thats at least 5-10 blocks deep.

Build something and give me the coords. I'll chunk it off for you. 23, same to you :)

REVISION: Found the raw materials shed. You might wanna refill a couple of these.

Will do.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Build something and give me the coords. I'll chunk it off for you. 23, same to you

I just have no idea where to start looking for such a place that isn't already occupied somewhat, and isn't like 1000km away from my mine :(

23yrold3yrold

My sphere is now centered around -115, 64, 98. All I have there at the mo' is a tower of dirt, but that's where I'm be setting up shop. From ground level to the sky, and probably a bit below ground too.

Once I get more airborne I'll be expanding somewhat but I'll have lots of freedom from the look of it. I doubt anyone will build near others or purposefully wreck someone else's stuff anyway. :)

EDIT: Construction well under way; almost a full double-chest worth of sand and the lower-half of Biosphere 2.0 is almost a third done ... will start working on the glass bits until my sugar-daddy can give me more sand. 8-)

Neil Black

I just have no idea where to start looking for such a place that isn't already occupied somewhat, and isn't like 1000km away from my mine

There are nice oceans both to the north and to the south of the starting area. Not sure where your mine is, though.

Thomas Fjellstrom

There are nice oceans both to the north and to the south of the starting area. Not sure where your mine is, though.

Most of them seem to have people near by though. I'd prefer if I could avoid digging into people's mines and such.

MiquelFire

Holy crap! When the hell was the last time I played at home? It seems I had an update.

CGamesPlay

Most of them seem to have people near by though. I'd prefer if I could avoid digging into people's mines and such.

That's what WorldGuard is for. Revoke build permissions on some area and nobody can accidentally dig there.

Thomas Fjellstrom

That's what WorldGuard is for. Revoke build permissions on some area and nobody can accidentally dig there.

True, but that doesn't mean I should just (unknowingly) swipe some land someone has already built on/under, just because I want to build something big.

CGamesPlay

So, that's what I was talking about. Pick a direction, walk towards it for a day. I can give you a few whole chunks out there and you can do whatever you like with the space.

Thomas Fjellstrom

But thats a pain in the ass, and I'd have to walk back and forth :(

Arthur Kalliokoski

"walk towards it for a day"

I would certainly hope there's some sort of fast forward.

CGamesPlay

But thats a pain in the , and I'd have to walk back and forth

We should build a rail system!

I'm currently working on a dungeon. It's about a half day's walk from town. I wonder what I should put at the end, though.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Yeah, I might do that tomorrow. Take a walk. But I'm having a fun time farming for wheat. Make some bread since its easier than looking for pigs.

Its harder than it looks though. some plants don't even grow :(

Neil Black

You can always change your spawn point with a bed, so if you die you won't have to walk all the way back out there.

And, yes, rail system. We will need a good one eventually.

23yrold3yrold

Well it's started lagging heavy, but I pushed hard to get the basic shape done. More plans and detail work coming later ... head to -115, 64, 98 on the server if you want to see ...

{"name":"604131","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/e\/f\/efc04325d1c83f5d28cb50f93415fe83.png","w":854,"h":485,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/e\/f\/efc04325d1c83f5d28cb50f93415fe83"}604131

Neil Black

I just checked it out. That sphere is fantastic! Especially from the inside.

Neil Walker

So, is BAF's server still running or is everyone jumping ship to cgamesplay? I tried both at the weekend and failed to log in to either. Eventually I got onto cgamesplay (not BAF's) and reserved a little plot for myself.

MiquelFire

I think I found a spot I want to reserve for myself as well.

23yrold3yrold

Much thanks to the material supplies, btw. Even after CGamesPlay gawking at my sand use and giving me 1024 sandstone blocks, I still had to grab two more stacks to complete it. :)

BTW, am I the first to post this one?

REVISION: I like how my sphere looks on the map. ;D

BAF

My server is still up, minecraft just tweaks out and stops allowing connections. :-/

LennyLen

I've started constructing a tower at 75, 25, with a mine nearby as well.

kdevil

We should build a rail system!

Above or below ground? I think I finally have enough iron to make a track from the spawn point to my area :) .
I still need to find a lot more gold, though, if I want to use powered rails instead of the booster glitches.

Also, I've noticed that the map at mc.cgamesplay.com occasionally likes to shuffle the order of some chunks. According to it, the path to my area suddenly trades places with a hill for about 16 blocks ::)

CGamesPlay
kdevil said:

Above or below ground? I think I finally have enough iron to make a track from the spawn point to my area :) .

Below. I'm building a station in the marketplace. It has one exit track and one entrance track. Destinations will be chosen by switch points that I have yet to build, but basically it will be an unpowered powered rail and a bendy track. A button on the left will turn on the powered rail and send you left, and a button on the right will turn on the powered rail and switch the bendy track, sending you to the right. We can put multiples of these along the railway to give different destinations.

I'll build the station in the marketplace (I have some design ideals I want to follow). If you build a station, I will run tracks to it. The only requirement is that it has an incoming rail and an outgoing rail. Also, since I am American, the outgoing rail is the one on the right.

video

This is not the station I'm building, but I'm taking a lot of ideas from it.

CursedTyrant

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/05/19/notch-working-on-minecraft-sky-dimension/

Apparently, there will be some sort of sky dimension in Minecraft, and while that's all great and seems like a shitton of fun, I really would not object to Notch fixing all the fucking bugs in the game first. Or simultaneously.

23yrold3yrold

.... sky dimension? So, just, Y_PLAYFIELDMAX *= 2? I sincerely hope there's more to it ... though I wouldn't be opposed to a little more vertical space.

CursedTyrant

I think it's a gonna be a new dimension, like the Nether. See the screenshots and how liquids tend to just vanish suddenly at one point. It's probably something like the floating isles type of terrain in minecraft classic.

BAF

The nether doesn't even officially work in multiplayer, and he's going to layer more dimensions onto his already shitty system of handling them?

Kibiz0r

New features are fun. Bugfixing and refactoring your undoubtedly shitty codebase are not.

Neil Black

Isn't he also working on a whole host of bugfixes?

BAF

Yes, so let's keep piling new broken features on top of broken and flawed code that undoubtedly needs refactoring, if not large chunks rewritten. Just create a huge mass of broken code that will never be fixed!

Neil Black

Weeee!

CGamesPlay

Check out the station! It's almost finished, now all it needs it a place to go to! I guess I'll build a few more stations way far away to add more unexplored space.

Neil Black

I added a small station on the big sandy area to the north. Not really much, just tracks running through with stairs leading up. No tunnels leading away yet.

EDIT:

Also, I was thinking, if we're going to make an underground rail system, we should have a standardized depth for tunnels and stations.

23yrold3yrold

Tried to log in, died instead. I really need to figure out why my connection from home is such ass when playing this game ...

CGamesPlay

I don't much care for standardizing that, actually. Some areas might merit an above-ground track for the view, for example. FWIW, the tracks I laid are at 62, and the layout is:

<incoming rail> <fence> <sidewalk> <sidewalk> <fence> <outgoing rail>

Who is this stephen walker? Try to build further out than actually on top of the marketplace roadway, ok?

Thomas Fjellstrom

Check out the station! It's almost finished, now all it needs it a place to go to! I guess I'll build a few more stations way far away to add more unexplored space.

I want to build one in the middle of my bay, after I build a glass dome over it :D it will look fucking awesome.

Neil Black

I don't much care for standardizing that, actually. Some areas might merit an above-ground track for the view, for example.

True. But I think having a standard would still be useful, even if certain areas merit breaking the standard. I prefer standards as a reference, not an absolute rule.

But if we don't want to do that, I'm cool with it. Just a suggestion.

CGamesPlay

I worry that a 4-block-high tunnel at depth 62 will intersect with some oceans, but that in itself might be cool.

Neil Black

If it does, put on a glass roof. Always looks cool.

It works for Microsoft.

Edgar Reynaldo

You're comparing minecraft to Microsoft? Get real. I haven't had a single problem with Vista in the 3 years since I bought this laptop. Minecraft on the other hand suffers from disappearing blocks and shitty connections to the server. I'd take a Windows OS over minecraft anyday.

CGamesPlay

I found a really massive desert, though. Can we get a map update? I'd like to see it.

MiquelFire

So you're to blame!

CGamesPlay

I'll run an update tonight. It's a really heavy operation.

Neil Black

So you're to blame!

Yeah. I may have increased the map size by a significant percentage while exploring that desert. :-/

23yrold3yrold

The map is kinda borked. My sphere looks like it's trying to asexually produce a like, baby sphere.

I like the giant gray thing near me. Looks like the Tasmanian Devil Godzilla is on the loose ...

gnolam

Well, given how utterly broken multi turned out to be, I approve of adding new features over bugfixing. :)

That's probably my tower. It should look grey and brown on the next map update, as I've just covered the top with dirt.

Thanks. I'm away from home now, and I don't think I'll get very far trying to play on my laptop over hotel wifi, but once I get back I plan on adding a minecart station.

J-Gamer

Apparently, there will be some sort of sky dimension in Minecraft

There's already a mod with a sky dimension:
Aether

Neil Black

Map is updated. My desert appears to be larger than the entire starting continent.

J-Gamer

There seems to be a small lava lake in the middle of that desert :p

Neil Black

So there is. It's mine, all mine I tells ya!

Thomas Fjellstrom

I'm really un-happy that someone is building a large funky tower on the hill behind/over my mine :(

LennyLen

Sorry about that. I didn't notice your door until I accidentally fell off the cliff above it.

GullRaDriel

I like how Thomas called Lenny tower 'funky' , it fits Lenny so nicely ^^

When I think about you Lenny, funky is one of the word that are coming into my mind ^^

Thomas Fjellstrom
LennyLen said:

I can make do. I'm planning on building a test dome over the small bay there in front of my mine. and put a train station inside. I think it'll look freaking awesome.

MiquelFire

What's the deal with the chunk error near my place? If that is not a mistake in the mapping software, did I just lose my tree farm because of that? (and half of my other farms)

kdevil

It's just the mapping software, it apparently likes to randomly transpose some chunks when creating the map.

CGamesPlay

1.6 is coming soon.

It's got a couple bugfixes:

Quote:

+ Added Nether support to multiplayer
* Fixed dispenser graphics being one pixel off. ONE PIXEL!!!
* Fixed a game crash when riding a vehicle or animal into the nether
* Fixed network packets being sent unbuffered, causing huge amounts of packets being sent
* Fixed loads of exploding tnt generating way too many particles, possibly crashing the client

And a few features:

Quote:

+ Added craftable maps
+ Added hatches
+ Added tall grass in some biomes
+ Mushrooms now spreads (very) slowly

But removes a couple dearly loved glitches:

Quote:

* Fixed submerged boats rising very very fast
* Fixed minecarts next to each other causing extreme velocities (sorry!)

Adds some stupid hacks:

Quote:

+ Added server property view-distance. Sets the radius of terrain updates (in chunks) to send to the players. Range 3-15, default 10.
* Fixed entity positions going out of synch sometimes. They get re-synched every 20 seconds now.

And, of course, fixes some things that indicate that Notch shouldn't've been programming in the first place:

Quote:

* Fixed not being able to target blocks when at x or z pos 1000
* Fixed buttons and levers being placeable on leaves in “fast graphics” mode

Thomas Fjellstrom
Quote:

* Fixed network packets being sent unbuffered, causing huge amounts of packets being sent

I wonder how he's implemented this... Surely he hasn't done it properly.

But I hope it fixes some/most of the lag issues.

23yrold3yrold

That would be most delightful.

CGamesPlay

I did a tcpdump and took a cursory glance over the traffic pattern minecraft generates. There were several instances of ~60-byte packets in quick sequence, although there are runs of 1440 byte packets, which I assume are chunk updates. 1440 would be the MTU, so that's the ideal rate that you can send data at for maximum throughput.

This change will help a lot; I think. Unfortunately, the larger gain is going to come from a server-level view-distance. This is unfortunate because it will lead to a severely impacted user experience, and it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I just don't see why he can't spend some time to implement a proper Priority Queue. That and treat all clients as separate queues, but with the same priority, so packets are taken from each client equally.

CGamesPlay

I'm pretty confident that the problem isn't anything that will be tweaked to how the data is being transmitted. The server is simply transmitting too much data. For example, if you log in and stand completely still, the server will send you 2.85 MB of data. This is the initial map; I don't know if it's compressed but it certainly doesn't feel like it. While standing and doing nothing, you are constantly downloading at 8 KB/s. That's doing nothing, just staring at the wall. I took a ride on the train and the entire time the server was sending me data at 40 KB/s. That's just from riding the train! Here's another example: the bobbing of dropped items is synced to the server. As a quick experiment, I threw 200 blocks on the ground. My data rate increased by about 1.2 KB/s while staring at a wall.

Syncing the position of things every 20 seconds only compounds the problem Notch already has ::)

gnolam

And, of course, fixes some things that indicate that Notch shouldn't've been programming in the first place:

What, the ridiculous regressions weren't enough proof? ;)

kdevil

Not to make you redo several hundred blocks of track, but shouldn't the rails be on the inside, so animals can't get in the way of the carts?

CursedTyrant

I'm glad he's finally fixing shit. That said, I'm also happy that Nether will (or at least should) work in multiplayer. I wanted to see hatches in Minecraft for a long time now, so that's also good.

Maps will be fun, but not as good as Zan's minimap mod.

Thomas Fjellstrom

m pretty confident that the problem isn't anything that will be tweaked to how the data is being transmitted. The server is simply transmitting too much data.

That's part of the problem. With a proper priority queue system in place, one large set of updates to one player wouldn't lag off the rest of the users. It would just take longer for that one user to "Sync" but then no-one would get kicked off, so I think that's a win over all.

It's also important to place IMPORTANT commands in a higher priority queue than regular old updates. Regular old chunk updates or silly animations would be given a low priority, and would only be sent after all the important, required stuff is sent.

MiquelFire

My originally planned to organically grown (enclosed tree farm) house is done for now (Aside from some basement like area needing to be figured out what I want to do with it). Now to figure out what to do for a mine. Do need a door for the tree from within my house though.

LennyLen

I checked it out. Looks nice. My tower-top garden is pretty much done, I just need to add as few more flowers. I'm on a rose finding and exploration mission right now.

kdevil

Getting compact redstone circuits working correctly is a pain >:( . I may need to work out my minecart station's circuits in a redstone simulator before I go any further with it in-game.

I'm not even trying to to anything fancy: One button to continue onwards, one button to change tracks and go the opposite way.

BAF

RedstoneChips is an awesome mod, but CGames doesn't want to install it. :P

Neil Walker

Who is this stephen walker? Try to build further out than actually on top of the marketplace roadway, ok?

Erm, that was me sorry. What exactly is wrong the house is on the other side of the road. Or is it the gated area on the other side? It can easily be destroyed.

tbh, I hope you don't mind but it was actually my little teeny weeny son, he wanted to join a multi-player and look at peoples work. I figured being a private server it'd have less people and no spanners destroying stuff and everyone would be tolerant of his not so grand designs. Don't worry he knows all the rules like shutting doors, never stealing or griefing and I keep an eye on him.

kdevil

There's nothing wrong with it, but it is weird to see someone's house so close to the main road when everything else is so spread out.

CGamesPlay

I agree with kdevil's sentiment on the house, but the garden was physically on top of the roadway at one point :P

Don't update your clients yet! I'll let you know when it's good to.

23yrold3yrold

Don't update your clients yet!

Too late. :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

Don't update your clients yet! I'll let you know when it's good to

I don't know how NOT to. The new launcher doesn't seem to even attempt to run on linux. Least it won't for me. Every time I download and try the new launcher from minecraft.net, I get the old launcher, and it will always auto update.

kdevil

Oh, the new version's out now? Goodbye, booster cart glitch; hello, faster booster tracks.

The Minecraft Wiki said:

New Bugs:

Water sometimes freezes most water into ice regardless of if its in a snow biome or not.

And hello ice-nine, apparently.

LennyLen

For those needing an online fix, BAF's server is updated to the latest version.

CGamesPlay

I read today that the Bukkit devs aren't going to release a Bukkit 1.6 just yet due to bugs, so I've disabled mods on the server and it should be good to so, with Nether! If somebody has the materials, maybe a portal inside of town would be good.

kdevil

I've created a nether portal near the rail station. Be careful, though: the section of the nether it leads to is even more unsafe than usual. Basically a valley with lava on one side, with nothing between you and any ghasts that might wander nearby.

LennyLen

Is the map still being updated regularly?

MiquelFire

There's a cave in an underground garden that leads to death as you will fall by mistake, and will not be able to see around you. I lost a few things because of that however.

CGamesPlay
LennyLen said:

The map was never updated regularly :)

I'm not entirely happy with the mapping software, as the nearest zoom level is far closer than I care for and there's no way to adjust it. But whatever :) I'm running an update now.

BAF

Get better mapping software. :P

paranoima

:o all this time I've been poking around in the MC server and never realized there was an a.cc thread about it :). I stumbled into it a few months back when I logged into #allegro on IRC.

I'm the one who added the nether portal near the initial spawn point (near the bridge to Tomasu's isle). Glad to see it finally takes you to the nether. I was almost killed by the missle firing ghost thing on the other side. >.<

paranoima said:

A lot of us mostly moved to the new mc server at mc.cgamesplay.com. Baf's has issues.

paranoima

...and this is what happens when I don't check in at #allegro or the forums ^.^

probably for the better, my indoor skydiving center was pretty much an eyesore ;)

Thomas Fjellstrom

Dude, you should stick on #allegro longer >:(

kdevil

Riding the minecart rails at night has nearly killed me a couple times now. Next time I connect, I'm going to put some fences on the outside of the tracks.

MiquelFire

Minecraft is coming to Xbox 360 with Kinect support, this winter.

CursedTyrant

What?

Neil Walker

Somebody could have told me you can press SHIFT to lock you at the edge of a block. For the past 6 months I've been edging very carefully and slowly :-/

23yrold3yrold

Somebody could have told me you can press SHIFT to lock you at the edge of a block.

You can press SHIFT to lock you at the edge of a block.

kdevil

Yeah, someone was kind enough to tell me about that in-game, after I complained about the number of times I had died from falling while trying to build an elevated minecart track. ::)

CGamesPlay, could you update the map again? I've been doing some exploring.

It does. A limitation of the software means that to expose more of the map, it has to double the boundaries of the map, which will mean the render process will take 4 times longer >_<

Thomas Fjellstrom

It does. A limitation of the software means that to expose more of the map, it has to double the boundaries of the map, which will mean the render process will take 4 times longer >_<

So the people who made that software are equally good as Notch? Amazing!

MiquelFire

If anything, they're worse. Notch made some mapping software that was really fast, and generated the world view in real time. Who knows if that software is still around, and if it was updated to support the new save setup of not having only 5 worlds to play with.

Neil Walker

I tried fortresscraft demo on xbox last night. Wasn't impressed at all, even compared to the classic mode minecraft it was pants.

Still, I hear they're making a proper minecraft for xbox. If so, could this be the end of the current java (and therefore, non-windows) platform? given it's daft managing two streams (.net, java).

MiquelFire

Notch said he is still working on the PC version. I'm guessing that is because he has more freedom with the PC version. From what I can gather from twitter feeds, Notch may not be directly working on the 360 version.

Neil Walker
neil said:

Stupid b*st*rd son bought the game by mistake. Selected multiplayer and he thought the screen that popped up was a disclaimer or something so he clicked Yes. It was the payment screen :o

tbh, every single trial game I've ever played has brought up a screen first saying 'this is only in the full version, press X to buy'

BAF

Hahaha, the only new features he adds are bugged out and he's thinking about a 360 version? This is approximately in line with Mozilla thinking they could pull off a mobile version of Firefox. (I know they made a release, but I'm assuming it leaks almost as much memory as the full version).

Microsoft E3 2011 Press Event. Just before Disneyland Adventures! (What I said could be all that was said about Minecraft there actually)

kdevil

Huh. I think I'm exploring new territory, and then I stumble across someone's awesome obsidian-and-lava-and-diamond structure.

Whose is that?

relpatseht

Did you cut down my tree, kdevil?

kdevil

What tree where? I cut down a couple trees that were in my way, but I didn't notice any hints of them being deliberately planted (a sign, torches, etc.).

relpatseht

Ha, no worries, it grew back.

I think I should expand my obsidian house, however. It needs more gold.

Neil Walker

Well, I got round to starting my own local server up with bukkit. I gave myself the chest full of anything mod, flying mod, blast pickaxe, no damage tools and weapons and a few others (like creating walls, boxes and cuboids).

After I made chests full of everything and built a diamond block house I got bored and switched all the mods off. It's no fun having everything.

Thomas Fjellstrom

After I made chests full of everything and built a diamond block house I got bored and switched all the mods off. It's no fun having everything.

Tell me about it. One of my first maps I used mineplump, and even when turning the settings down a bit, I still had massive seams of stuff. full blocks of iron, gold and diamonds. stacks of blocks. (not ingots, stacks of blocks)

CGamesPlay

After I made chests full of everything and built a diamond block house I got bored and switched all the mods off. It's no fun having everything.

Exactly why I was only subsidizing stuff you can find easily, but need large quantities of.

kdevil

Went searching in a cave for iron, got ambushed by a creeper. :o
Found some iron and escaped the cave, narrowly avoiding two creepers. :)
Went to the town minecart station and found a creeper there, but managed to ride away. :-/
Arrived at my main base, and was greeted by a creeper in my minecart station, which exploded and took out a bunch of my rail and redstone. >:(

Did I personally offend Notch somehow?

23yrold3yrold

Someone seems to have. I can no longer log in at all and minecraft.net appears to be down ...

MiquelFire

The server side login stuff doesn't appear to scale well.

Well, it's the same group that hacked Sony Pictures' web site not too long ago.

gnolam
CGamesPlay

The original Minecraft login system used an O(n) lookup to match a user name. I imagine it was trivial to "sink" this server.

MiquelFire

Well, pistons will appear in 1.7:

Looks like you could do an awful lot of stuff with those pistons. Definitely a strong addition to the game.

but I'm still not going to play it.

Neil Black

I already have plans for those pistons.

Arthur Kalliokoski

I was unable to think of a single use. I did hope the cow would get between the piston and block though. Minecraft hamburger!

ImLeftFooted

Oh man, that's cool.

23yrold3yrold

Kind of interesting. I liked the dam and the castle entrance. Not many more practical uses, but I like how the game is getting a little more complex in its interaction.

relpatseht

Practical uses? We will finally have an effective and reusable method of converting electrical to mechanical energy. So many more possible traps and setups.

Those things better be able to lift dispensers. I want perdition turrets.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Those things better be able to lift dispensers. I want perdition turrets.

It looked like most special things couldn't be moved. At least not sideways. Either I saw it not moving a dispenser, or not moving a record player, can't remember.

23yrold3yrold

Couldn't push a furnace, note block, or chest. Lifting may be another story.

BAF

I'm sure it will be buggy, don't worry.

kdevil

CGamesPlay: Looks like the mapping tool you use has been updated recently. Hopefully it's faster now, or at least less buggy :)

Neil Walker

ooh, I like the appearing staircase and door. Very indiana jones :)

GameCreator

You're looking for slimeballs? You have a higher chance of meeting them in real life.

And they're available on all levels.

kdevil

Huh, the minecart station ate my minecart. It got sent through the return track and onto the 'excess carts' track, though there weren't any other carts in the system, and it never returned. :(

CGamesPlay

Excess carts get dropped off at the cactus. If it isn't working, the global flush switch will reset the whole system and drain everything.

MiquelFire

I just want to know who blew a hole in one of my walls?

LennyLen

I just want to know who blew a hole in one of my walls?

That's one of the reasons I moved back out of town. If anyone is going to draw a creeper too close, I want it to be me.

MiquelFire

I'm not really in town.

Ben Delacob

I connected CrazyPhoton's (cPhoton's) monorail to Grand Spawn Station, if anyone is still visiting BAF's server.

BAF

That server is still working? :o

I should move my personal server into the cloud, with all of the awesome mods. One such mod being multiverse. I have a (outdated at this point) copy of mc.baf.cc's world on there, you can just teleport over.

Neil Walker

Is there a copy anywhere, I spent 4 days making miner willy at BAF's site...

BAF

I can post a copy of it if anyone wants. Heck, I could make the whole git repo available, if anyone wants the fully versioned history of the thing.

kdevil

Looks like the piston update will be coming soon. Can't wait to add all manner of secret passages to my base. :)

LennyLen

Speaking of bases, I completed my castle:

23yrold3yrold

Pretty sweet. Could use some detailing though. No ramparts? No ledges?

LennyLen

The part of the peninsula it sits on is inaccessible on three sides due to the cliffs (which I terraformed so they couldn't be scaled). On the fourth side (which can't be seen in that image), I built a wall five metres high and four metres thick, which is guarded by several towers along its length. The wall only has once access point - double steel doors that only open from the inside.

Once I've finished a few more things around the area, I'll ask cgamesplay to make the area only changeable by me, so anyone who wants to visit has to figure out the other way of getting in. :D

GameCreator

Nice but some of those candles are definitely going out when the water rises.

ImLeftFooted

"Water rises" -- are there going to be tides?

Rising water? What is this?

My friend and I are working on an Alice in Wonderland themed castle. It is going to be quite large once finished. In fact, we've only finished (well, mostly finished) one room. It contains a number of optical illusions.

When complete, there will be a portal leading to the dark side of things. That is, an evil parallel universe of sorts. It will take forever.

MiquelFire

@J-Gamer

You might need to recreate the world a few times. I saw why it was the best seed ever on the first time, but I deleted it. Later, I recreated, and saw just a normal world. (Even more odd, three of the normal worlds I created didn't look anything alike.)

J-Gamer

@miquelfire: I recreated it a few more times, but the only thing that happened once was that I was on a little isle. But I don't see how that refers to

That is indeed the best world seed ever. It took me a while to figure out how to move away from the spawn.

What am I supposed to get?(or something that makes me recognise it?)

EDIT: got it... scared the creeps out of me ._.

gnolam

So... the same seed doesn't actually produce the same result every time? Ah, that legendary Notch/Minecraft quality we all know and love.

J-Gamer

It seems it always generates the same world, but the spawn point is variable.

Neil Walker
J-Gamer said:

So, given the minecraft world is 'bigger than earth' how many times do you need to run it to get to the same spawn point :P

Surely, given the above, if you don't start in same place you may as well not bother with specific seed values?

J-Gamer

AFAIK, the amount of spawn points it generates is limited to 3-6 or something like that. Otherwise, it would be almost impossible to get the same spawn.

Neil Walker

I can vaguely (read: I'm at work now) remember trying 1 and 0 as the seed and it was mostly sea and sand with nothing much else.

On the subject of minecraft:

1. how are those npc's done (like what you see in the adventure games on yogscast, etc)

2. how do you produce those flyover effects (I presume a fly mod but I can't find any that are useful) and those fixed camera shots (assuming it's done without the need for two accounts...)

J-Gamer

1. They use other players as actors. Look at this vid:

Neil Walker

Ah, well I was playing one last night and it had a room full of npc's and one of them spoke when I got close to him (and there were some npc1.dat kind of files there too).

Neil Walker

video

Shows you the detail behind it and some of the other new stuff - sheers for cutting leaves and sheep, you can stack fences and put torches on them, smash tnt without them blowing up, etc.

kdevil

I've excavated a large room right near bedrock, and I still haven't found any slimes. What more do I need to get them to spawn? I need sticky pistons, dammit!

MiquelFire

It' not lit, is it?

kdevil

It's lit with a few glowstone blocks and a couple hundred torches.

Edit: Apparently slimes only spawn in roughly 1 out of every 10 chunks, so I have to keep digging until I find a chunk that slimes will deign to spawn in. >:(

23yrold3yrold

From the wiki:

They can spawn in any light level and lighting does not affect its spawn rate. However, lighting up the surrounding area does decrease the chances of non-slime mobs spawning and thus indirectly increases slime spawning rates.

So get torch-happy. :)

EDIT: Well my connection from home to the server is much better now, so I did some underground exploration, got some iron, made some buckets, and hauled up a portal's worth of lava. My portal leads to a "base" in the Nether, which leads back to town. So I guess I have a shortcut now. :)

MiquelFire

Fixed in 1.7.2 however.

23yrold3yrold

O________________________O

EDIT: According to the YouTube comments it's still bugged in 1.7.2. I can't verify because slimes refuse to spawn for me.

someone972

When are most people on? I just now figured out where the new server is, I've been trying to connect to baf's all this time :-X.

EDIT: Also, could someone re-op me so that I can use the list command? (I don't know why it isn't a public command :P)

23yrold3yrold

I'm on pretty randomly and rarely myself.

EDIT: I used this site to successfully track down some Slime spawns and get some Slimeballs. Sticky piston in hand, I tried the "money printer" glitch above and for the record, it works on all three track types (made a big stock of powered tracks since I never find any gold :(). Also works on making more pistons. :)

Is everything OK with the minecraft server? I connected today, did some stuff, then disconnected. When I reconnected, I appeared where I was when I had disconnected yesterday, with only the items I had yesterday. It's as if nothing I did today actually registered with the server. ???

LennyLen

I had a similar experience. I returned to the position I had previously disconnected from as well, with my previous inventory. Changes I had made to the world remained though.

Edit: it's still happening, so if you have any items in your inventory that you don't want to vanish, put them in a chest. They'll be safe there.

kdevil

Apparently there's a new update out. Hopefully it fixes whatever's causing this glitch.

And it also removes item duplication bug. Hope I find some slimes before I run out of my stock of sticky pistons...

gnolam

I have never ever seen a slime in Minecraft. :P

And that while I have found a way to generate unlimited amounts of sand/gravel: that glitch with sand stacked a few stories high, obsidian to keep it from pushing sand too far and a trench filled with torches with a walkway next to it to pick up all the sand :D

Neither did I until I went out of my way to figure out what chunks they spawned in via the link posted earlier.

MiquelFire

Do we have the server seed?

Neil Walker

I saw a great video the other week where someone generated an infinite cobblestone generator.

23yrold3yrold

Neil Black did that above; clever idea.

MiquelFire

Cobblestone, the only block you can generate legitly with pistons in Minecraft.

gnolam

I had to pick out the world seed from my save, then type it into the Slime Finder app on my netbook[1], take a screen shot of the map it produced and transfer it to my main computer, figure out approximate coordinates from it, and then build a slime farm... but I've finally seen slimes in Minecraft. And farmed them for slime balls.

References

Neil Black

Neil Black did that above; clever idea.

I actually didn't even think about the infinite cobblestone generator until I had finished my self-repairing bridge. Then I was like... "Hmm... testing my bridge has given me a bunch of cobbl- I AM A GENIUS!"

LennyLen

The update didn't fix whatever is causing the server to not save player data

Neil Black

That might be an issue with the server itself.

kdevil

In the meantime, it's allowing me to duplicate the items I was holding at the time! So... lots of pink wool, coal, and torches.

Ah well.

I'm off for a week (travelling, and my laptop isn't powerful enough to play anything made in the last 10 years). Hopefully when I get back the server will be fixed, but my stash of duplicated inventory stuff will still be intact. ;)

23yrold3yrold

How do you duplicate coal, and why would you duplicate coal and torches when charcoal and torches are subsidized in town?

kdevil

Every time I reconnect I end up at the same place with the same items in my inventory, but changes I make to the world stick.

So I made a chest, stuck items into it, disconnected, reconnected, and suddenly I have those items in my inventory as well as the chest! With a sequence of connecting, putting items in the chest, disconnecting, reconnecting, etc., I can make any number of copies of what I had in my inventory at the time this server bug began.

I duplicated the coal and torches just for the hell of it, but have the subsidized items in town been restocked lately? Last I checked, the chests were almost empty.

23yrold3yrold

Ah, okay. I thought you were doing the sticky-blocks hack.

Is there a way for the server to automate the chest editing via scripts to refill stocks?

someone972

Any word on when the server might be running normally?

LennyLen

The server seems to be running even worse right now. I've been experiencing multiple disconnects and the last few times I've tried to connect, there's been around a 10 second lag.

edit: Great, and now I discover that the area I spent a few hours working on earlier today has been replaced by a rectangular block of random terrain.

I'm out until it gets fixed.

Actually its completely in character. Before he setup this minecraft server, it was hard to actually talk to him. Seems to be quite the busy little beaver.

Hi guys, what'd I miss? I haven't touched Minecraft in a week or two

Read back a bit, and you'll notice that the server is acting up. Something about not remembering what you've done after you log out. Possibly other stuff.

kdevil

I'm unable to connect at all, now.

23yrold3yrold

In other news, anyone remember that old Enterprise model?

video

Well there's been progress.

video

Ponies end at 1:30.

Neil Black

Ponies end at 1:30.

Ponies go all the way to the credits. :-/

someone972

He means the ponies in the second video of the enterprise that he embedded. The hyperlink "Ponies" after the second video is just a link to a song, in which the ponies do go to the credits.

Anyone tried the server? Has CGamesPlay figured out a way to fix it yet?

Neil Walker

I think a good idea (real, not mod) would be a block that lets you stay underwater. All that water is just wasted at the minute.

23yrold3yrold

It's cheating, but you can stay underwater if you drop a door, or plant some seaweed. You can also abuse the way water falls by making a block two spaces above another block with all four sides clear, and the water will just fall down, never entering the two-block cavity.

I can't see those issues being fixed, but if they are, I'd love to see an underwater breathing helmet craftable. Cheap and expendable, or semi-expensive and refillable, or super expensive and unlimited (and low armor). Upgrade to a lantern so you can see in the deep.

kdevil

So, is anyone able to connect to the server?

LennyLen

Not for a while.

CGamesPlay

Server's out of memory and the hard drive is full. Hmm. I'll fix this up, server will be up within an hour. Sorry guys, I've been way too busy at work to have time to play games :)

[append]
Increased the HD size to 64 GB, so that should last for a while. I also decreased the RAMs in the server to lower the cost of the instance. If it's noticeably more laggy, let me know and I can bump it up (the price difference is like $50 a month :-X)

LennyLen

I was able to connect, but it was unplayably slow. However this could also be due to the fact that it was raining (which has always made the game run slower on this MacBook), combined with my gf updating to Lion, which seems to use up even more CPU and memory than ever.

Also, can you revert to an earlier backup? This one has random chunks of terrain scattered across areas I had already built on.

CGamesPlay

Can you give me a date?

kdevil

I think the random terrain showed up on the 11th, so how about reverting the map back to how it was on the 10th?

CGamesPlay

OK, reverted to the 10th of July. The map is going to be out of date... I'll see if I can come up with a decent system for getting it updated on a remote server with more RAMs.

kdevil

Ah, it's working again! :) A little laggy, but not too bad.

LennyLen

The lag is ok with just one person on, but starts becoming almost unplayable with two. I don't know about three or more, but with the way it seems the game is coded, problems seem to be exponential.

kdevil

How much RAM does the server have right now?

CGamesPlay

Over 600...

kdevil

Strange, it shouldn't be this laggy. These guys had a lag-free server going with only 128MB.

Aside from all the buggy magenta lines between water blocks, no.

That's not so bad then :)

Surely one of Apple's "exhaustive" checking systems would pick something obvious like trademark infringement up?

CGamesPlay

Surely one of Apple's "exhaustive" checking systems would pick something obvious like trademark infringement up?

Probably. See if you can get a McDonald's app on the store.

23yrold3yrold

I dunno; what if you got a third-party to port an app for you? I can't see Apple taking responsibility for someone else's copyright problems ...

LennyLen

Is anyone else unable to connect to the server?

CGamesPlay

That's me. I'm having a lot of difficulty working with the server itself while minecraft is running. It should be back up in an hour or two (if not let me know).

Neil Walker

Can you remember the first time you tried minecraft (assuming you never saw a million videos first). A lad at work said he got a free trial version, dug a few bits of soil, couldn't build anything (he was pressing q thinking that was how you build), then it got dark and he got killed by a spider.

Those were the days ;)

btw, he's an IE user so the low IQ probably accounts for some of it.

kdevil

CGamesPlay gave me a copy of his server's world, and now I'm experimenting with different mods. :)

Can some people try connecting to my server at mc.kentdev.net, and see if lag is a problem?

Crazy Photon

No lag problems for me kdevil, seems to work nicely!

someone972

I noticed a very slight lag before the blocks would pop up, probably less than half a second though. Very bearable, and may have just been caused by a slow connection to the server. I was only on with just me, so I don't know how it works with others on.

relpatseht

I noticed CGamesPlay's server is still down. Are we all moving to kdevil's?

LennyLen

Dunno, but I tried it last night and had no lag.

kdevil

Sounds like the server is working well so far :)

I'm going to be away from the computer all the rest of this week, though, so if something goes wrong... well... it'll be fixed next Sunday. :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

I can try running a minecraft server at home, I've got more upload than I used to, so it might be bearable for a few users. Just in case kdevil's doesn't work out. Or people want another server to play on.

LennyLen

I was getting some lag today while playing. Not too bad, but noticeable.

kdevil

Back!

I was getting lag, too, even when just playing over the LAN. Apparently the Minecraft server just gets slower and slower the longer it's left running. :-/

I've set up a script that will restart it once per day, so that should fix things.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I've heard it doesn't do that if you make sure it can only ever allocate a max amount of memory, meaning set the max memory for the VM, but also set the OS's own virtual memory limits for the process as well.

It makes me think its doing something that causes java, or a native library to leak like a sieve.

23yrold3yrold

So do I have to make a new sphere now? :(

Thomas Fjellstrom

So do I have to make a new sphere now?

I'm pretty sure kdevil imported the world from CGamesPLay's server.

kdevil

Yup, it's a copy of CGamesPlay's world, so your sphere is still intact. :)

The memory leaks are probably the fault of Bukkit, but the once-a-day restart will keep that under control.

LennyLen

WorldGuard is stopping me from opening any of my chests :(

kdevil

Where are they? I only used WorldGuard on a few locations in the main town area.

LennyLen
kdevil said:

The ones in and around my castle.

edit: The message I get when I try to open a chest is "WorldGuard: No defined regions here!"

kdevil

What were you holding when you tried to open the chest? The WorldGuard mod interprets right-clicking while holding string as "list the current region and owner(s)".

LennyLen

Ah. I did happen to have string in my hand.

BAF

I've heard it doesn't do that if you make sure it can only ever allocate a max amount of memory, meaning set the max memory for the VM, but also set the OS's own virtual memory limits for the process as well.

Interesting. I was wondering why everyone else's server became laggy, but my local one could run for weeks on end with no problem. I limit java to 1GB on a Hyper-V VM with 2GB. So maybe keeping the limit a bit lower than the amount available helps out in some way.

Thomas Fjellstrom

If that is indeed true, it would make me think something is either leaking, or cacheing a large amount of objects in some kind of slow data structure, which just gets slower and slower to access over time, while eating up more and more memory, and the only time it bothers to clear any of it out, or stop wasting space is when there's a memory allocation failure.

But I have no idea if it is indeed the case that limiting the maximum amount of memory the process can use actually helps out to any real degree. But if it is, its probably best to limit it to a relatively small amount of ram. 1-2G may even be too much.

kdevil

Bukkit seems to have trouble with memory leaking. Even without Bukkit, though, Minecraft has memory issues.

Anyway, I have a map up now: Minecraft map

What mods are installed on the server (or allow locally like many items)? surely nobody can mine that much stuff to make a rail track that long....

23yrold3yrold

Certain materials were being "subsidized". Mostly they were easy-to-find materials just for the sake of saving time (like sand, wood, dirt, etc.) but we wanted our railroad ...

LennyLen

Even without the subsidising, it wouldn't take too long. The material for my railway was probably only a couple of days worth of mining.

kdevil

Heh, most of that rail track was actually completed before I started running the server. Iron is fairly easy to find when you're exploring caves.

The mods installed on the server are just WorldGuard, Permissions and WorldEdit (required by WorldGuard), and FullChest (for the subsidized items in town).

23yrold3yrold

I don't know what's on the rails, but if there's powered tiles that's gold. And I've found almost no iron at all on that server so it's not THAT easy. :(

I should log in on lunch hour, maybe start hooking up my sphere to town via rail ...

kdevil

Well, about half the powered rails are made with legitimately mined gold. The other half are from when I noticed that the powered rails near town were spaced closer together than they needed to be. ;)

I'm also going to try pasting the entirety of BAF's world into some uninhabited section of mine, so you might have two spheres soon. :)

23yrold3yrold

Woot! I'll have to make a skybridge to connect them ...

EDIT: How should I go about making a rail connection to town? Any specific instructions for integrating with the existing railroad?

Ben Delacob

The powered rails would be better further apart so empty carts would stop.

Thomas Fjellstrom

The powered rails would be better further apart so empty carts would stop.

How do you send empty carts back then? Cary carts back? :P

kdevil

How should I go about making a rail connection to town? Any specific instructions for integrating with the existing railroad?

Yeah, I still have to figure that one out...

EDIT: I'd post pictures, but the attachment uploader always says failed.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I hope you got more than just cobble. Pretty sure theres a chest in town that gives infinite cobble.

someone972

Ya, but that'd be cheating ;). Besides, I did it because I wanted to get rid of it, I didn't like it sitting there.

verthex

I just thought this was ironic. Seeing that minecraft has tons of cubes but no real puzzelz.

CursedTyrant

Good game, that.

LennyLen

Server is down

kdevil

That would be the hurricane making itself known. The server lost its network connection for a few hours overnight, but it's back up now.

I also got the minecart hub working, with 6 outgoing rails and a common incoming rail coming up to the surface behind the nether portal building.

Neil Walker

Just been reading about 1.8. Seems like a lot of good things coming (which really, will just bypass the need for some mods), but I wish they'd do more about adventuring under water.

I wonder if you can swap your world between adventure and creative mode?

CursedTyrant

but I wish they'd do more about adventuring under water.

LennyLen

kdevil: There's a section of the nether, near where the town portal site is that blocks can be mined from, but nothing can be placed there. Is this a weird game glitch, or have you put some form of protection on it?

kdevil

Sort of a glitch, I guess: apparently the basic Minecraft spawn protection was still active, and overriding WorldGuard. That should be fixed now.

LennyLen

Ah. It's not overly important, I was just trying to lay a torch trail as I went for glowstone. I ended up taking a different route.

kdevil

My slime cave on the outskirts of town is now open for business:

I already have almost 2 stacks of slimeballs. ;D

CursedTyrant

Hint for hunting slimes: Kill them with a stone pick (or basically anything equally or less powerful than a stone pick). This way, they always break into the smallest forms (ie. you don't kill them in one hit), so you get a maximum number of slimeballs. :)

verthex

It would also help to make some jello shots with rum or vodka, just to make the game even more enjoyable.

LennyLen

I appear to be stuck in some limbo part of the Nether:

Any ideas?

MiquelFire

Maybe you got above the ceiling somehow?

kdevil

Huh, were you near the top of the nether before? When I connected today I spawned about 20 tiles above where I was previously. Anyway, I'll get you back below ceiling just as soon as I figure out how to do that without erasing your inventory in the process.

Update: OK, you should be at y=110 now. Hopefully that doesn't drop you into lava. ;)

LennyLen

I probably was quite high to start with, yeah. I'll login again when I get home.

edit: When I logged in, I was still at y = 129.

kdevil

Yeah, and I just respawned on top of the mountain I was digging under. I think we're seeing this bug:

The Minecraft Wiki said:

When connecting to a server, the player's disconnect position may be changed or rounded. This can result in the player position moving vertically to the closest 1x1x2 open space directly above the rounded coordinates.

OK, you should now be at y=70. If that doesn't work, I'll move you out of the nether altogether.

LennyLen

That worked.

I had unfortunately moved around in the y=129 plane however, so I don't know where my last correct position was. Do you have the co-ordinates for the main portal in the nether, so I can tunnel my way back to there?

kdevil

Yeah: the main portal's at about 20, 60, 20.

LennyLen

Server problems?

edit: n/m it let me login after a while.

edit 2: I think the server might need a restart. The lag is getting pretty bad again.

Neil Walker

I really like the 1.8 trial. Brightness and FOV do nothing for me, but the rivers and villages are good. I flew down a river into a canyon/cave and out the other side and it was a beautiful thing :)

Only problem is fps has dropped considerably even on my meagre settings.

Thomas Fjellstrom
LennyLen said:

Also, if its a login problem its likely a minecraft.net problem.

Most java errors come from exceptions. Now which exception was it? Some kind of connection time out?

LennyLen

I can't remember the details, but threads were mentioned.

edit:

I'm back in the y=129 plane of the nether again. :(

I'd forgotten exactly how it had happened last time, so got there the same way again. I'd tried to get on a minecart, but doing so had put me inside a wall. To avoid suffocation I disconnected in the hope that reconnecting would put me back where I had been before clicking on the minecart. No such luck.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I've been warped into rather random locations when "falling off" a minecart track. Middle of rock? Sure! Middle of lava? No problem!

:D

kdevil

And the new version coming out will undoubtedly introduce all sorts of new bugs! Yaaaaay!

LennyLen: I've bumped you back down to y=70. I'm also going to look at installing a plugin that will automatically teleport any player that gets above the nether ceiling.

Elias

Is there any client plugin which let's me remap the mouse bindings? Using the mouse with the left hand, I'd prefer to dig with the right button or even better with a keyboard key - but google failed me.

Also a plugin which makes running on/off instead of having to keep a key pressed and same for crouching would be nice - I had one of those when I played last but it doesn't work with 1.7/1.8 anymore.

kdevil

I don't think there's a plugin, but search Google for "minecraft autohotkey". You might be able to swap the left and right mouse buttons with that.

Neil Walker
Elias said:

Can't you do this from the mouse driver? You can in windows 7.

Elias

Actually when I restarted it updated to 1.8 and seems this very feature was added :) Still hoping for move/sneak toggling.

LennyLen

When will the server be updated to 1.8? I usually go to an Internet cafe and play for a bit on my break (which will be in about 3-4 hours), but since it's in the browser, it will be running a later version than the server.

kdevil

The server has just been updated. Bukkit hasn't been updated for 1.8 yet, though, so the server will be running without mods for a bit.

Edit: Thanks for the void fog, Notch! I really like how it made my slime pit totally unusable!

LennyLen

The update seems to have moved things around in the Nether as well. When I restarted, I was at the same coordinates as when I'd left, but in a completely different location. Right now, I'm where the portal back to town should be, but there's no sign of it or any of the structures that used to be around it.

If you could send me back to town, that would be great. I'm about to start starving.

kdevil

Heh. Maybe this is a Bukkit vs regular Minecraft thing, but the nether was getting loaded from a different folder. Meaning you were trapped in a freshly-generated nether, with no portals back. :P

That's fixed now, and I've moved you to the portal. As it was, you were pretty much right next to where it should have been anyway.

LennyLen

I don't know if this is a 1.8 induced bug, or an incompatibility between 1.8 and the texture pack I was using, but now, all unopened chests are black, and all double chests, whether unopened or not are drawn 2-wide on the N-S axis, even if they;re really 2-wide on the E-W axis.

Elias

Chests are like that here too... guess just one of many new bugs :P

LennyLen

The introduction of Endermen has killed my mob-tower as well. :(

Neil Walker

Chests in 1.8 are smaller than standard blocks now and they have animation on opening. Perhaps that's the cause?

It would be cool if you could get and Enderman to pick you up and transport you somewhere :)

gnolam

Add/remove a torch next to them and their lighting will go back to normal.

Neil Walker

But how can they find time to fix bugs when there's important stuff do to with the game like adding 3D snouts to pigs.

When I get home I'm going to try cubelands. Any good?

ImLeftFooted

Wow cubelands looks much better. Probably less buggy -- and look at those shadows...

BAF

Don't tell the minecraft fanbois, they will cry and threaten death on you for daring to mention a 'minecraft clone.' Meanwhile, minecraft itself is a clone. ::)

kdevil

Apparently the only way to fix the "double chests drawn going the wrong direction" bug is to break and re-place the chest. :(

In better news: there are now large ocean biomes, the fog at the bottom of the world disappears if it has natural light shining on it (so, once a few skylights are added, my slime pit will be usable again!), and slimes seem to spawn more often.

Neil Walker

cubeland is closed for trials.

I bought Total Miner this morning. It's quite good for just a few pounds.

LennyLen

I did some exploring today. Here's a few images of some of the new features:

CursedTyrant

Cobwebs are nice. Finally you don't have to fight spiders to get thread. :P Also, 1 cobweb = 1 thread, and spiders don't always drop it. Giant mushrooms are nice (if there's room, use bonemeal on a small mushroom to transform it into a giant one).

Neil Walker

Is anything documented on how minecraft actually works in the sense of the environment? I know it's all based on a seed but I'm interested in how they get the entire massive world generated so quick and in such a small set of data files, including all the caves, rivers, biomes, etc then of course all the changes people make to them.

Or is the landscape really not generated until you get somewhere close to it?

J-Gamer

AFAIK, only the chunks you're close to are generated, and they are 16x16x16.(If I'm not mistaken)

Neil Black

Or is the landscape really not generated until you get somewhere close to it?

Land isn't generated until you get close to it (within 300 blocks, I want to say... don't quote me on that, though).

This is why your save files get bigger the more you explore. Generated land is saved (so you don't lose changes you make) once you've explored near it.

Neil Walker

Ok, ta.

But that must have changed in 1.8 to allow for the massive dungeons and rivers?

btw, has anyone figured out a use for FOV? I can't stand anything other than normal.

Neil Black

I haven't seen the rivers yet, but the massive dungeons could still be generated chunk-by-chunk.

bamccaig

I played for the first time in months yesterday. There are a lot of exciting additions to the game! Nevertheless, I don't have any time to even pretend to keep up with you guys, so I probably won't be playing it ... Until an actual story or quests, etc., is added to make it a bit more about playing and less about tedious building. :P

Elias

I joined the mc.kentdev.net server yesterday for the first time in months - and I found a massive mob tower. I climbed up then fell into some dark waterfall and all the way down. There I tried to dig my way out of some glass+lava mechanism - apologies in case I destroyed it somehow. (Only very few monsters seemed to fall in so it didn't seem to work as intended :-X)

23yrold3yrold

I don't even know how a "mob tower" works; I assume the Endermen mess it up somehow. :)

LennyLen

That was probably my Mob Tower, or Sev's. The Endermen pull blocks out of the channels, which causes the water to flow incorrectly, which stops the tower from functioning properly.

It can be fixed by making sure that none of the spawning floors are more than 2 tiles high. It's a tedious process on an already mostly complete tower however. I fixed the top two floors of mine then decided to go exploring for a while.

kdevil

Endermen take damage from water, but I guess the water doesn't kill them fast enough to prevent them from picking up blocks.

LennyLen

Either that or they don't take damage if just their arms get wet.

edit:

The server is down again. This seems to be happening a lot more with the 1.8 update.

Kinda annoying too, since I just paid for an hour's internet to kill time during my break but now can't play. :(

kdevil

I've updated the server to the latest version, which I think has a fix for the problem that kept killing the server (a StackOverflowError relating to transferring items in and out of dispensers and chests).

Update: I changed the design of the town's minecart dispenser, so it won't have any more stuck minecarts in the system (and as a bonus, lights an indicator torch when it's all out of minecarts), then went exploring. I like the new biomes, and I especially like that clay is no longer rare.

The only downside of the new biome generation code is where it meets the old generated biomes. In particular, I noticed a water biome that suddenly decided it was a mountain range. The new water level is 1 block lower, too, so there's a tiny wall of water on the border of old and new oceans.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I'm probably going to have to start a new local world just to mess with the new game.

bamccaig

Personally I've given up on trying to keep up with Minecraft. I'll play when it's officially released as a game. That is, something that you can call "beaten". :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

I think I'll always prefer the sandbox/builder style game over any kind of hacked up adventure/rpg thing they can possibly come up with.

verthex

I think I'll always prefer the sandbox/builder style game over any kind of hacked up adventure/rpg thing they can possibly come up with.

If simcity 4 is what a sandbox is like then I totally agree. I've almost completed building cities in a quarter of my region of Timbuktu. One of my cities has a population of ~250,000 sims. I called it Zoo York!

Onewing
verthex said:

Oh nice! I was happy to hit 150,000 in one of my cities (I noticed that at certain points, the population will spike). I love the ability to grow the region rather than just the city. I tried CitiesXL 2011, but it's missing that certain something SimCity4 has.

Samuel Henderson

The first and last time I tried to connect to the new server (well, the server that went up after Baf's anyways) I got stuck in what I think was a starting area. It was a house that had doors, but they would not let me pass even when opened... I was unable to remove/break any blocks from the house to escape. That was really the last time I played (several months ago).

I've been playing Terraria in the meantime. I'll eventually play Minecraft again when Terraria becomes boring or when Minecraft is finally out of beta.

LennyLen

I got stuck in what I think was a starting area. It was a house that had doors, but they would not let me pass even when opened...

I got that a few times. It happens when there's too much lag.

Elverion

How do you make an area uneditable by other players? Is this a plugin, or is this built in to the server?

23yrold3yrold

It's a plug-in thing. A bunch of us have "protected" areas on the server ... though Creepers and Endermen can probably still wreck them ...

kdevil

Well, the regular Minecraft server has some basic no-way-to-adjust-it-as-far-as-I-know spawn protection, which prevents changes to the area around the spawn point by anyone but ops.

If you use Bukkit, though, you can get the WorldGuard plugin, which lets you define regions, give those regions owners, set build permissions, and set other region properties (send a message when you enter/leave, allow/prevent mob spawning, disallow creeper explosions, etc.) ...
... which is a shame, because Bukkit hasn't been updated for Minecraft 1.8 yet. >:(

23yrold3yrold

Hmm. Sending a message when you enter or leave ... is that something users can toggle for themselves?

kdevil

I'm not sure, but probably yes. If they're set as the owner of a region, they should be able to adjust its flags. The command would be something like "/region flag <regionname> greeting Get off my lawn!"

LennyLen

I entered a portal to the Nether, and instead of finding myself at my tunnel rail system, I was in a cavern, next to a ghast. The portal was there as well, so it wasn't just my position being altered, like last time.

Any ideas?

GameCreator

I suspect you're playing one of the Minecraft beta versions.

kdevil

I haven't done anything to the server itself, but I did create another nether portal in an attempt to make the portal in my base link to it. Portals are finicky enough that doing that could have thrown something else off. :-/

Incidentally, building and using a new portal in the nether is a good way to create easily-mineable obsidian on the surface of the normal world.

Also, Bukkit has been updated for Minecraft 1.8, so the server will be getting its mods back soon.

Edit: Server updated, and I hear that in 1.9, Endermen will no longer be able to pick up stone, cobblestone, wood, glass, and most other blocks normally used as building materials. :D

LennyLen

I'm back at y=129 in the Nether again. Can you move me to 277, 115, 270 please?

kdevil

Done! No guarantee that it won't immediately boot you back above the ceiling, though. I really need to get around to installing a plugin that fixes this problem automatically.

LennyLen

Yeah it put me back to y=129. Could you just move me back to town then please?

Neil Black

I finally got to spend a few minutes trying out 1.8. I'm liking the new terrain generation... some of the cliffs I came across remind me of the early days of Infdev.

;D ;D ;D

I'm trying to get my free time schedule organized to include classes. Hopefully I'll have time to play regularly soon.

relpatseht

What's up with the server? It seems to be going down frequently and kicking me within seconds of joining consistently.

kdevil

LennyLen: OK, you should be back in the regular world now. I've also added the "Nethertopfix" plugin, which should prevent this from happening again.

relpats_eht: Not sure what's going on there, but the log has a bunch of "java.net.SocketException: Socket closed" messages when you tried to connect.

LennyLen
kdevil said:

LennyLen: OK, you should be back in the regular world now.

Nope. I appeared in a cavern in the Nether. It also contained a few ghasts, all of which fired at me before I could even move (the game doesn't accept any input for a few seconds on the MacBook). I just managed to quit the program before I died.

kdevil

Whoops. Well, try now. I've backed up your player data, so I can restore your inventory if this latest change accidentally causes your death. :-/

LennyLen

Still in the Nether. This time I appeared in some burning Netherack, so I had to disconnect again instantly.

23yrold3yrold

If anyone's following tehc funnays ... I was looking forward to railguns at ten paces, personally. :(

kdevil

LennyLen: OK, since I have no idea how to put you back in the regular world, I've moved you right next to the portal instead.

UPDATE: I've finally installed the Multiverse mod, and set up a quick (and ugly) teleporter to BAF's world in town. I'll get around to making the teleporter look nice later...

Let me know if you run into any problems with the server. Apparently Multiverse can cause Worldguard to hit an error in some situations.

Neil Walker

I've got the zipline mod and it's awesome.

LennyLen

OK, so I found out why stepping into the portal didn't take me to the right place. The entire tunnel system I had built is now gone. So there was no Nether-side portal to connect to.

edit: I had patched up some of the holes in the walls around the portal as well, but they've reverted also.

kdevil

Hmm, do you remember roughly when you created that tunnel? I can try restoring it from a backup.

LennyLen

I'm not sure. I'll just make another one.

Felix-The-Ghost

So what's everyone think of the new magical direction Minecraft is taking? Potions/Enchantments. Ironic since already Bethesda was suing Mojang for the dang "Scrolls" name of another game in Mojang's development, and now it's gonna be more [actually] like their Elder Scrolls series.

I don't like the direction myself. Never saw Minecraft as a fantasy game despite the Nether/monster mobs. Also I kinda view those features as RPG-ish. I'd rather have more building-related features like a larger variety of materials or maybe colored bricks by mixing clay with dye. Or maybe different colored planks for the three types of wood.

23yrold3yrold

I don't mind it, but I really hope MineCraft keeps the focus on exploration and building, not "adventure".
Even if they do add huge boss enemies or dungeons or something, the only rewards anyone would care about is crafting mats. :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

They did state that the "real game" would be an adventure style thing. I really do hope they keep the building mode, so we don't have to deal with a poorly written adventure.

gnolam

and now it's gonna be more [actually] like their Elder Scrolls series

I'd say it's more like Dwarf Fortress: focusing on adventure crap nobody cares about rather than fixing the sandbox parts people actually play.

bamccaig

I'm personally looking forward to the adventure bits. The building got boring for me a long time ago, which is why I don't play anymore. I'm waiting for them to make it into a game. Building something is completely pointless if there's not a purpose for that something. Effectively everything people build now is just art. It serves no practical purpose. I know what you're going to say though: buildings are shelter from mobs, and rails are transportation! That's all well and good, but you respawn after death, and there's no point going anywhere because there's nothing to do there either (aside from more pointless crafting).

The adventure bits can actually give crafting a purpose. Until lately Minecraft was really just a crappy level editor UI... :-X It was fun only if you used your imagination to pretend that it was more than it was.

It's great that you can just screw around in GTA IV, for example, but it's not actually very much fun after a while. You need the actual story and characters to give it all a purpose. Don't get me wrong though: the sandbox elements are critical. The story elements are just as critical though.

Onewing

Can we craft adventures?

Felix-The-Ghost

Hey guys, how do I connect to Allegro's Minecraft server?

Edit:Nevermind, I got it. It was night when I joined so I got blown up once and killed by a mob of mobs after that. The "beginner's shack" had dirt and gravel. No wood :( I had to like climb hills to get to a tree and I did and replanted it, then I died. :(

Edit:After starving almost all my health away, I decided to voyage into the Nether for a cooked porkchop from the Nether pig things since the only mob on the surface was a sheep, and there was no food in the starter chest.

Shortly after arriving in the Nether I was bombarded by a Ghast which actually turned off the Nether portal. I trying luring his shot to re-ignite the portal but the ghast flew under the platform I was on. I'm still alive in the Nether -- up the stairs by the portal (the one by the starter shack)

I've never been in a multiplayer server before so I tried giveing me some flint and steel and changing my mode to creative but I guess only mods can do that.

:(

LennyLen

Are you sure you're on the right server? The building you should start in (or around) doesn't have any supplies in it, but is near the store-room, which has everything you could need (except coal).

I also entered the Nether via my portal and went to the town portal to relight it for you, but it was fine. There is also no other sign of ghost damage around it (except for some old damage which I patched up while I was there).

On an unrelated note, I now have a town:

Felix-The-Ghost

Oh. I was on mc.baf.cc or something. I thought BAF did the server. I was searching through the forums and I thought that was it... :)

What's our server? Is it actually allegro.cc? I don't know, I'm dumb enough to not know even if it were in this thread :/ I don't know why I never tried it.

I originally was looking for an ip address for a server but then I saw mc.baf.cc written out. Honest mistake.

Also, pretty town.

LennyLen

The new server is at mc.kentdev.net

bamccaig

I missed you in IRC ...

To find the server(s), type:

?? minecraft

And an appropriate bot should answer. The response is a free-for-all, so heed caution, but it should be relatively reliable.

LennyLen

I just tried logging on to do some resource mining, but lag is currently making things unplayable.

kdevil

That was probably the map getting regenerated. I fixed a problem with the map where most markers were unclickable, although it's still not rendering some of the blocks that were added with the latest update.

Update: I've removed the multiverse plugin, because it's been causing too many problems, so BAF's world is inaccessible for now.

Felix-The-Ghost

Yeah I lagged out around 11:08 PM CT I thought about posting it here, but I thought it'd be temporary. It was weird cause it was right when I attacked a green slime :B

--

Oh, hey I need to mention, I broke the sign above the ladders chest in the tools shed. I had no idea the sign was what made the chest infinite until I tried to put it back with the same text :/

Specter Phoenix

I could never find a good place to build that didn't exist a million miles away from town for baf's server. I've not been on since. I've been updating MC but not been playing it any. It's sad, I have 31 games in Steam, 8 games in Impulse, MC, and tons of other games and haven't played much of any of them. Got all the end game stuff in Terraria (minus the magic stuff). Amazing how boring games are when you have no friends to play them with:/.

CGamesPlay

That's kind of a dick thing to say in this thread, don't you think?

Specter Phoenix

No I could think of worse things to say that would be more screwed up than that. I think I actually started building in Baf's server and in one other one and then just stopped playing. As for having no friends, I have acquaintances on here and no friends in real life so that isn't messed up to say. The friends I did have left when I got married.

bamccaig

Personally I thought it was a dick thing to say that what Spector Phoenix said was a dick thing to say. :-/ WTF? >:(

Oscar Giner

It took me several reads to get it (being sleepy probably being the main reason :P), but yeah, ^ this.

Specter Phoenix

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of me. Doesn't bother me a bit.

kdevil

I've found a stronghold!
Anyone who wants to check it out and pick up some iron bars or mossy/cracked stone brick, take the 1.8 Border Express from town, then follow the trail of torches into the desert on the right.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I tried to find your stronghold, but it seems all I found was a massive generated cave/mine system with a crapload of iron, coal, spiders and some gold.

And so far, I think the new bits in minecraft have made spelunking a lot easier. Before the health stuff, I'd have been dead a couple times over with how poorly prepared I was for that cave system.

Also, that /back command just saved me hours trying to find my way back out ;D

I think I managed to get a stack of iron in 30 minutes or so. Probably the best haul I've ever made (not including the one time I ran mineplump on a map and set the iron too high).

Specter Phoenix

I started playing solo again a few days ago and recorded this video just a few minutes ago showing me going from original Spawn to my "Humble Fortress" and secret exit (not very secret now).

My MC Home

Thomas Fjellstrom

I got another stack of iron ore last night in about 40m. Not too shabby. Got some diamonds and gold out of the deal too. Big freaking ass cave system attached to the stronghold.

Neil Walker

I've given in and I'm playing minecraft again. Is the new server mc.kentdev.net? I tried that and sticking 25565 on the end, but all I get is 'took too long to login'.

[edit]Ah, I was still on 1.7, seems every server in the world is now 1.8. pity it didn't give a nice error like 'wrong version' instead of server busy or socket error.

Thomas Fjellstrom

The client is supposed to auto update. Or at least give you the option of updating.

Specter Phoenix

I don't play multiplayer much. Though I have Too Many Items installed on my local so I have all the stacks I want so I can build quickly and leave mining for later.

kdevil

If there's no effort involved in getting materials, doesn't that make the game boring?

Thomas Fjellstrom
kdevil said:

Quite. I once used MinePlump and things got very boring.

23yrold3yrold

The response to the new Creative Mode should be interesting then ...

Thomas Fjellstrom

If all I was using it for was building stuff, then maybe its ok. But then I'd want a better interface than a funky FPS miner thing.

Specter Phoenix
kdevil said:

If there's no effort involved in getting materials, doesn't that make the game boring?

On the contrary, I added the mods because I got bored having to mine for materials. Truthfully, the game bored me within a couple of weeks after buying it. I hate that I wasted $20 on it but keep it in hopes that it becomes fun again. So far it hasn't, but this is the first time a map gave me building ideas, though I'm already bored with doing the idea within three days of starting it.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I still like exploring caves and fighting the baddies. Its a bit easier than it used to be, so I don't come so close to dying all the time, which makes it considerably less frustrating. Finding iron ore and diamonds in the caves is also kinda fun.

Onewing

For a while now, I've been trying to construct a 3x3 map (nine in-game maps). It's taken forever, but with the bug going into 1.8, I've now got these giant oceans in my world that make it a little easier to explore. ;D

LennyLen
Onewing said:

What bug? Ocean biomes were a deliberate addition in 1.8.

Specter Phoenix

Outer pic of fortress while standing on top of main building. While digging out the inside of the mountain on the left I dug straight down and found an old mine shaft.

http://twitpic.com/73shmm

LennyLen

I've made my mob tower enderman-proof, so it's fully functional again now.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I started working on my dome. Don't feel like working on it right now. Today I seem to be a bit blah. Not sure why. Probably just did too much last week (not to mention sleeping in a bit today).

Onewing
LennyLen said:

Via the wiki:

Quote:

As of Beta 1.8, because of the change in how land is generated, if a player is in a world that was made pre-1.8 and travels into new chunks, there's a chance that a very, very large ocean may be formed. There will also be a one-block-high drop in sea level along the discontinuity between the old and new chunks with the old chunks being higher.

There are also places where the water drops, but not into water. If I fall off these ledges and my boat lands on the solid blocks, I instantly die. Interestingly, if I put a torch right next to these water walls, the water will attempt to spread down to the lower level.

LennyLen

Ah right, I have come across a few of those 1m waterfalls.

Specter Phoenix

Just explored the MC server. Nice, but with the new hunger meter I don't see myself going online with MC. I prefer peaceful mode locally so I can just build and not have to worry about mobs, hunger, or health (unless I fall a huge distance by accident).

bamccaig

Personally, I think that building things in Minecraft is boring. Why do it? It doesn't mean shit afterward. Oh, you built a castle fortress with glass windows and wood paneling? On my first day I dug a hole and buried myself. I'm fine. There's no reason to do it. That's what Minecraft lacks. Your imagination can only bullshit you so far, and in a multiplayer game your imagination generally fails epically.

Go ahead and build your useless towers, rail networks, and mine shafts. It's all a big waste of time. I look forward to when the creativity takes a backseat to an actual reason/purpose/motive.

Append:

In other words, give me an attractive female to rescue/chase. >:(

Specter Phoenix

Well with that rant it concludes that MC is boring either way. The same premise is there for online and offline. Mine, build, create. Once you have created everything you are stuck with nothing to do. I've seen guys make video after video of them and friends just doing maps and then breaking the rules set for them by digging through the hard areas. Building is boring? Okay. How long does it go before digging and fighting the same mobs over and over become boring? This is the first time I have picked up MC since buying it late last year. Even with the fortress I have gotten bored and started using TNT to blast the center of the tower out some. I feel MC is boring for the fact that it, IMO, genuinely has no purpose behind it to keep it entertaining in any way.

I was told that MC and Terraria were great games and entertaining. MC bored me from the beginning and now I only play it when I get bored with whatever else I'm doing. Terraria became boring once I had all the end game stuff and beat all the bosses. I just feel that all games have lost their reply value. I can't think of a single game that I have beat and turned around wanting to beat it again. With MC is there is nothing to beat and Terraria has a limited set of things to beat. I don't expect it to be long before I leave MC alone for almost another year. Though I did jump onto two other servers (BAF's and Moosader's) but after about 3 days grew tired of mining and not really having any reason to play it.

With the building idea I have now, at least I feel like I have a purpose in the game. Once I get it done I doubt I would play it much after that, if I get it done that is.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Just explored the MC server. Nice, but with the new hunger meter I don't see myself going online with MC. I prefer peaceful mode locally so I can just build and not have to worry about mobs, hunger, or health (unless I fall a huge distance by accident).

I've found the new hunger stuff has made the game easier since health regenerates when your hunger meter is full. I'm not dying nearly as much as I used to. And you get food from cows and chickens now too, so food is generally plentiful. Not to forget that food stacks now. I went on a hunting mission for a single day, and I got like 32 steaks and a bunch of pork as well.

Onewing

Why do it? It doesn't mean afterward.

Nothing we do means anything afterward if you look far enough forward. We're all just wasting time.

In other news...one map to go! Still haven't seen a village. :(

kdevil

Ah, I finally got the map at mc.kentdev.net to render the blocks that were added in 1.8. Now the large building in LennyLen's town actually looks like a building, instead of just a few lines of brick hovering in midair. :)

23yrold3yrold

Are there any paths in the Nether connecting those various portals?

kdevil

Most of the portals have paths through the Nether connecting them (although some of those paths are hidden).

Felix-The-Ghost

Okay for some reason when I joined the server I was in the void and died >:(
Also In the raw materials, I think wood planks needs to be called wooden planks cause it's not infinite :(

And thanks for not stealing my stuff guys even though I'm totally bummin' off the streets. Just like home

kdevil

The FullChest mod is a bit particular about which section of a double chest you open, and will only refill that half. Which half of the chest were you clicking on to open it?
(Also, the name on the sign is irrelevant, it's the number below that determines what the chest gets filled with).

Update: The nether has been added to the map! Most of the buildings and paths are obscured by all the netherrack, though.

Specter Phoenix

Been trying to make a mob factory and everything is going great til I get to the last part. The water on this one side is not acting like the rest of the sides. Kind of annoying too. Been working on it in solo mode as I have no where to build on the server in fear that I will run into someone else's builds. Used this tutorial for the entire thing-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VBMrFMzGMU

LennyLen

My mob tower is of a different design, so I can't offer any immediate insight to the problem, but perhaps if you show some screenshots of the correct and incorrect water flow it might be easier to help.

There's tons of space on the server by the way. Five minutes travel in just about any direction will take you to unclaimed terrain. If you visit the map at http://mc.kentdev.net you can get an idea of which direction to go in to find somewhere to build.

Specter Phoenix

Five minutes? Do I need to get an egg timer out for that? ;) That is good to know, I will probably try to get on there and start building one sooner or later.

kdevil

Also, you can add views to the map to show off your buildings by placing a sign: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Programs_and_Editors/Tectonicus#Creating_Views

I tried (and succeeded) in making duplicate maps via holding shift while crafting four maps, but I am nowhere on the resulting maps :/ map_0.
???

Specter Phoenix

I don't know what the hell is going on with my map of the mob farm. I got it working and decided to go up top, build an obsidian home to have a safe area from creepers and upon going to the third island I noticed a huge area of glass cubes. Went to explore and found that for some reason my map had a hole under that so I connected them all to a tunnel and from an observation room I watch the zombies, skeletons, creepers, and spiders walking around down there. I'll post a video tomorrow as I'm off to bed now.

Felix-The-Ghost

I tried (and succeeded) in making duplicate maps via holding shift while crafting four maps, but I am nowhere on the resulting maps :/ map_0.

Can someone like give me the 16 iron ingots/36 paper I wasted on this?

kdevil

Apparently that's a known bug. :-/

Anyway, last time I checked, there were at least 16 iron ore in the town's "misc items" chest (in the same building as the subsidised materials).

Dario ff

And thanks for not stealing my stuff guys even though I'm totally bummin' off the streets.

I stole a melon to save myself from starvation. :-[

Anyway, after not having played this game since BAF's server, I got some impressions.

  • This game still performs like shit.

  • I think building and destroying prediction with a 200ms latency is even more glitchy than before.

  • My previous minecraft knowledge is completely useless now, there's so much different and new stuff around, I don't even know what to build first.

Anyway, hopped in to check the new server around, built some crappy wooden house. Even if I don't really agree with the use of mods like the full chest one, I gotta admit it's way too useful. :-X

I haven't found anyone online today tho, do you guys play here? :P

Specter Phoenix

I mostly play with my single player world. I may eventually get on the server but I would be screwed if I wanted to do a mob factory due to the items I would need.

kdevil

I doubt they've done much to fix the performance, they're too busy adding dragons. I hope that, once the 1.0 version is released (in just about a week!), they get serious about fixing bugs.

... I haven't been on too much recently. I bought Just Cause 2 and have been busy destroying things instead of building them. :P

Thomas Fjellstrom

How could they even be close to a 1.0? Is the story mode finished? or does 1.0 not mean anything to Notch?

Oscar Giner

Of course 1.0 means something to him: he can now start charging 20$ :P

23yrold3yrold

I read somewhere that the game is set for an actual, it's-really-finished release this year. So it will be interesting to see Notch's definition of "finished" and what will still need to be patched down the road.

Onewing

11.11.11 is scheduled for 1.0. It's got adventure mode, dragons, gates to Oblivion and most of Tamriel.

You're confused. It's just so easy to get 'Scrolls' and 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' mixed up. The other week I bought 'The Sims' when I really wanted 'The Legend of Zelda'

You'd think, but as far as I know they don't even have a bug tracker. :-/

Thomas Fjellstrom

A while back notch twittered/blogged that he really dislikes doing anything but working on new stuff, and would only be putting in 10-20% time to work on bugs. And I doubt he's even putting that much time in.

Specter Phoenix

Makes me wonder why he is even bothering with the game if he is only focusing on the new features and ignoring the bugs. MC may be a good game, but his programming and work ethic makes me wonder about how long Mojang will last. If you would rather work on new stuff and not fix bugs because it is not enjoyably then why bother making games or software because you would have to fix the bugs or risk introducing worst ones later because they just compound on the previous ones. This is just me, but I would think the other programmers on it would get tired of having to fix Notch's bugs and eventually leave Mojang or start a mutiny against him.

Onewing

Nah, anybody will work on Notch-bugs if they are paid enough and Notch will never worry about what he is programming if he continues to bank on us. The mutiny would have to start with us. I'll do that right after I build my castle...

bamccaig

The bugs are probably impractical to fix at this point ... :-/ It would probably require a complete rewrite in some cases. :P Lots of game software is buggy and its rarely fixed...

gnolam

And you'll what? Cry? :P I honestly don't know what people are whining about. I haven't seen very many critical bugs and the game has always been mostly playable. There were a few periods where it wasn't, but compared to what I paid and how much fun I've had I have no complaints.

Onewing

^this

I feel satisfied what I got for what I paid.

kdevil

Hmm, the game has an actual ending now. The goal is to reach The End through a stronghold portal and kill the Enderdragon.

bamccaig

Maybe I'll just have to start playing it again then (after Skyrim, of course).

Specter Phoenix

I hope the Enderdragon looks better than the Endermen. Any word as to when they will be releasing this? Heard rumors that it was going to be 11.11.11 (didn't believe it, kind of seemed too silly to release it then). Though a lot of games and movies came out that day.

I'm holding off updating the server for now, in the hopes that Bukkit will be updated for Minecraft 1.0 fairly quickly.

Specter Phoenix

Updated...I love the update because I came upon a HUGE chasm with multiple waterfalls and lava that had turned to obsidian and stumbled upon 4 diamonds already. Though I've got to farm and such for some of it.

Arvidsson

The game won't even start on my mac :(

Specter Phoenix

I don't have a mac, just Vista and Ubuntu and it works fine on them. Under Ubuntu I already have most the achievements though I got majorly lucky in that regard. Chasm after chasm of water, lava, obsidian, and diamonds.

Neil Black

So, is it true that minecraft has dragons now? And an actual goal?

Specter Phoenix

Yeah, I went in creative mode and beat it. The End has some shitty lighting on my computer. The enderdragon has quite a bit of health and has eyes just like endermen. The defeat animation is nice, reminds me of the Wild Arms way of beating the enemies.

kdevil

Well, I'm getting tired of waiting for an updated version of Bukkit. This weekend I'm going to update the server, either to plain ol' Minecraft or to a dev build of Bukkit (haven't decided yet, maybe I'll flip a coin).

LennyLen

Yay. I finally have my PC now, and I'm updated to 1.0, so I've been waiting for the server update to play.

AYBABTCP! 8-)

It's probably a browser cache glitch...

kdevil

Uh oh. I hope the map hasn't been explored too much. Otherwise there won't be any strongholds with portals to the end dimension.

Apparently there are only 3 strongholds in a world, and they're all within a 1000-block radius of (0, 0). If the chunks they're supposed to show up in were already created by the pre-1.0 terrain generation code, we don't get any end portals. :(

23yrold3yrold

I don't know a whole lot about end portals, but do we get them on multiplayer servers? Is the end boss meant to be raided?

Yeah, there are videos on YouTube of groups going to the end dimension and attacking the Enderdragon. And it looks like it'd be hard to do solo.

LennyLen said:

They might have built it so you can either kill them for EXP or they die in some nice manner. My guess though is that it don't kill them at all and you just get the drops by killing them instead.

I'm sure I could build a nice trap for EXP or drops with some pistons and use them to control the water or lava flow :P

Crazy Photon
LennyLen said:

Well, the trap doesn't kill them, it just a pit where you can hit them from the other side of the jail. It also has a set of 4 sticky pistons which you can activate to weaken them or directly kill them if you just want the loot.

Currently the pistons are manually turned on and off with a lever, when I have the time I will modify the circuit so that the pistons suffocate the mobs enough to kill them with one punch.

Samuel Henderson

Does the minecraft server still have some sort of world screen shot (or am I thinking of Baf's old server)?

Specter Phoenix

I think this one has one too but I don't know. I think it was posted a few pages back actually in reply to one of my posts.

Is this what you mean? http://mc.kentdev.net/mapping/map.html

23yrold3yrold

So when's the Enderdragon raid?

kdevil

As soon as we find a stronghold that wasn't generated before 1.0 :P

I'm considering just deleting part of the map that's supposed to contain a stronghold, so the terrain can be regenerated.

Update: OK, any objections to me wiping out all the land around that one stronghold we discovered in 1.8 (roughly where someone972 is standing on the map)? Regions are 512x512 blocks, and I'll have to delete at least two, so if you've built anything even remotely nearby it'll probably be collateral damage.

23yrold3yrold

He certainly seems to be out in the middle of nowhere so it's probably good ...

someone972

I have no objections to it being deleted, with or without me in the vicinity.

Specter Phoenix

When did they add the ability for the map to regenerate deleted areas? I was on a server where the admin did that and thought it would be regenerated but instead we had a gaping hole in the ground for that area. That was pre-MC1.0 though.

Neil Black

Enderdragon raid? I may need to get back on the server for that. ;D

kdevil

Well, it seems to have worked: the area was regenerated, and has a stronghold with an end portal!

Now we just need to gather more ender eyes, some diamond gear, some food, and LOTS of arrows.

Specter Phoenix

Apparently I'm not the only one that fought it in creative mode. Though someone recorded it and YT'ed it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0epqbElneCI

I set up a server on my home server if anyone cares to try it out. I've done a bit of mining, but not a whole heck of a lot. connect to tomasu.org if you want to play around. There's no plugins or addons of any kind installed.

I've created a path to the stronghold: go into the town nether portal and follow the cobblestone path.

23yrold3yrold

Hmmm. I tried to play, but my portal no longer leads to town; instead it goes to the tower where Batman is currently chillin'. Then Java started having memory issues and it took me three or four crashes to find my way back. Um, I'll try this again later. :)

Dario, wha happen?

I spawned and got stuck in an infinite loop of falling into the dirt. :-/

If someone builds another portal close to another, one tends to override the other.

23yrold3yrold

That was my understanding, but my portal used to connect to town. Odd that it goes somewhere else now ...

In non-thread-winning-related news, the area of the stronghold near the end portal now has a melon patch, a brewing stand, and an enchantment table! Who's up for killing an enderdragon this weekend?

I also have an XP farm nearby. It's kind of slow at the moment, but I'm going to try out a different design that I saw on YouTube, which should increase the XP rate significantly. :)

23yrold3yrold

Still working on downing the lag monster. What effect does XP even have in this game now? O_o

PS: Humbly requesting a picture in the doodle thread of a giant moose battling Enderdragon. Godzilla vs Mothra style.

EDIT: Can play from work easily enough. Started developing the area around the ball a bit, and by area I mean airspace. Also, I can't get at the gear and torches/lanterns; those chests don't open for me. :(

kdevil

XP is basically fuel for the enchantment table: the higher the experience level you enchant with, the better the enchantments your items get.

...oh, hey, Bukkit was finally updated for 1.0. Once I get that installed, the doors and chests near spawn will start behaving properly again.

I only heard this on CheckPoint so I don't know how true it is, but apparently after MineCraft Lego was announced, someone contacted Notch and angrily demanded 50% of all profits from sales because he thought of it first. ::)

BAF

Notch stole the block idea from another entity? :o

Neil Walker

How about ScrollsCraft.

Specter Phoenix

How about ScrollsCraft

No because then Bethesda will come and say it is infringing copyright because it has mountains. Just like they did with Scrolls.

type568

These TM lawsuits are so sad :(

Specter Phoenix

Yeah, I laughed a while back when I read that Bethesda was doing a lawsuit against Mojang's Scrolls game. The article I read had an excerpt from the lawsuit and said Mojang was violating copyright because people would confuse the Elder Scrolls game with Scrolls. Stated (accused) Mojang of intentionally doing it so people would buy Scrolls thinking it was a part of Elder Scrolls. Then the thing that got me was Scrolls is breaking copyright because Scrolls has mountains just like Elder Scrolls.

I read the mountain line and thought, "Well, Square-Enix better hurry up and file a lawsuit against Bethesda because FF and TES have mountains."

Samuel Henderson

I love how in Skyrim there is a pickaxe on the top of the tallest mountain named 'Notched Pickaxe'. You have to go ridiculously out of your way to even find it so to many, it is an easter egg and an homage to Notch.

23yrold3yrold

You have to go ridiculously out of your way to even find it so to many, it is an easter egg and an homage to Notch.

Next time they're in the courtroom he should thank them.

Specter Phoenix

Yeah, I seriously doubt that. To them Notch is a nobody that they were trying to sue because they claimed he was trying to use their Elder Scrolls game to pull attention to their Scrolls game. I believe Skyrim was finished and released before they legal issues even started so I doubt Notch was even on their radar.

bamccaig

Minecraft is very popular. IIRC, developers from VALVe gave a shout out to it at one point. It's very likely that the Skyrim development studio has played Minecraft and completely feasible that it was indeed an Easter egg to shout out to Notch (it likely wasn't connected in any way to the legal dispute, and I wouldn't even be surprised if the corporate/management groups are unaware of said Easter egg).

Specter Phoenix

Well for the legal issue to have a serious chance the team and management would have had to sign the complaint as the team would have been required to write statements stating what Scrolls was infringing on copyright wise. Not to mention a Notched pickaxe was around in Oblivion (which I believe was out way before MC was in development).

relpatseht

I'm not sure you know how these places work, Specter. There is major division between the legal and the development departments. It is HIGHLY likely NO ONE on the development teams thought the copyright infringement case made any sense. It is likely, however, for them to have played minecraft and thrown in little homages to it. In any large game company, legal is a completely separate and evil entity.

This is all beside the point, however, as the notched pickaxe was around in Oblivion, as you said, which came well before minecraft.

kdevil
bamccaig said:

IIRC, developers from VALVe gave a shout out to it at one point.

Yep, Notch got his very own personal hat for TF2.

Specter Phoenix

relpatseht: They are separate entities. The law still requires affidavit from the lead developer factually showing what was being infringed upon as he would be the one that knew the most about the project. Just taking the legal departments say so that it was infringement doesn't work that way because it is hearsay at that point.

Of course Valve would pay respect to him. Valve is more about indie developers (Steam) than what Bethesda is.

Onewing

The Notched pickaxe is right next to a mining vein in a particularly difficult area to get to. It's an easter egg. kthxbye.

It's a trademark lawsuit, and thus is about the name - not the content of the projects. And the lead developer would not know most about the project (the lead designer might). Neither of those people own the trademark (I also doubt they've worked on every TES game), and I can't see how they would be required (unless they are forced/asked by their legal department) to sign anything.

Ah, misread the name of the game, sorry! :-/

Specter Phoenix

Sorry I had read somewhere that the designer had submitted a report for the lawyer to help with the case. As for pickaxes, a notched pickaxe is not a nod to Notch nor MC. If I remember my history there were 3 types of pickaxes used in real life (Single-head, double-head, notched). Not to mention I've heard that Bethesda is kind of anti-indie and if that is true it is really doubtful they would give a nod to an indie developer especially one that was fighting with the lawsuit during the making of Skyrim (as I'm sure the designers and the whole company would have had some idea the lawsuit was going on).

23yrold3yrold

I've heard that Bethesda is kind of anti-indie

Bethesda is a big company last I checked. Just because their legal department has a bee in its bonnet and its management department has a stick up its ass doesn't mean a designer on the team can't slide an easter egg under the radar for chuckles. Judging from online response it's been almost universally accepted as a MineCraft reference, and that's not a large leap.

Jonatan Hedborg

It's obviously a reference to SOMETHING (it's in an innaccessible location, and it's an enchanted weapon without a really practical use), and minecraft is the best fit by far.

Have you played Oblivion? I ran into a lot of items in inaccessible locations there. They put it there to make you work a bit for an item and as always the gamers have made their own assumption that it is a reference to something or an Easter Egg. Just like in one of the ice caverns there is a skeleton chest hanging from the ceiling and everyone is saying it is a Star Wars Easter Egg. Gamers turn everything into an easter egg when it could be little more than an accidental placement by the team. The pickaxe is enchanted so it doesn't surprise me a bit that they put it out of the way.

In Oblivion there was a sacrifice table that was some what of a pain to get to in a mountain and had an enchanted dagger. Since it was in an inaccessible location that required a lot of rock jumping it MUST be a reference to SOMETHING so lets start linking games and movies to it:P.

Fact is that gamers turn things into Easter Eggs that simply aren't there. I'm trying to remember what it was in L4D that fans swore up and down were Easter Eggs, Newell said they weren't there (though I think they did add some to L4D2 after that). I just watched a 3 part video in WoW where the video maker was saying different things were obvious nods to other things. I actually think Tradechat has 3 or so videos linking different things in WoW to real world things like TMNT, Grease, Christopher Walken, Pokemon, Zelda, Blizzards Failed Ghost game, Scarface, and many more.

Arvidsson

Notch responded to the easter egg on his twitter account. He knows several people at Bethesda, and had a one-on-one interview with Todd Howard where they talked about each other's games. So, yeah it's a reference alright. It's not so impossible to believe really.

23yrold3yrold

Heh; WoW had a ton of Easter Eggs. "Me Grimlok, KING!"

Heh; WoW had a ton of Easter Eggs. "Me Grimlok, KING!"

WoW has so much pop references to the point it starts to annoy you, mostly on quest names and descriptions. Heck, I think there's even an Order of the Stick reference with an NPC called Durkon, dwarf cleric. :P

23yrold3yrold

Didn't know about that one, but I believe it. A thread about WoW references would be a whole other 800 post thread ...

Only to those who waste their time playing it. I've only bothered watching videos. I played Runscape, Final Fantasy XI, and Guild Wars and those have pretty much made me not care about very many MMOs anymore. Use to play FPSs online, tons of MMOs and now I seldom touch it.

I have to concede that it is a easter egg due to the generic reply I got back when I emailed the webmaster about it. "Bethesda is unaware of any such item nor are we aware of such acknowledgements to aforementioned person or product. Signed Bethesda Webmaster" The reply was so generic and vague it made me realize they won't reveal it is because they know it will make the look bad for giving him a nod in game while taking him to court over alleged trademark bullshit.

Gawd you are negative today. It's Christmas; you are legally and morally obligated to get the Notched Pickaxe Handle outta yer ass.

Nope, negative year round not just one day. Close to Christmas but not yet. Legally? Nope. Morally? Yeah, but I'm not a moral person. "It's everyone's God given right to be miserable."

How is the kitty related to that? :P

Related to Skyrim as well, it seems the release build of the game doesn't include any compiler optimizations whatsoever. Someone's been getting out the junk and increased the performance by nearly 40% around.

Jonatan Hedborg

The kitten looks like what I imagine Specter looks like.

Kid?! I'm 30 years old. At that point I think it is a serious problem if you or someone else considers you a kid at that point.

Urban dictionary says Emo kid is:

Quote:

The stereotype for a kid(13-19) who has a lower tolerance for sad emotions, and feels inadiquet of their own personal worth(feels like they arent good enough). Many emos feel so depressed that they resort to cutting to themselves. Emo boys often weird girls pants and dye their hair black, with a pyrimid spiked belt, and tight tee shirts(usualy black). It is known that emos have a kind of rule that 2/5 of their face must be covered by hair, although it is actualy a subconscious feeling of wanting to cover up their sadness(eyes).

I only feel I'm not good enough at programming. Never cut myself, don't have anything black, shorts/jeans and a tank top/v-neck shirt is all I wear anymore. Only have facial hair until my wife asks me to shave. I don't grow it to cover anything, just got tired of having to do it every few days and cutting myself so I just let it grow. Prefer being bald as it is way easier to maintain and no need to brush it.

bamccaig

...Never cut myself,... ...just got tired of having to do it every few days and cutting myself...

:o :-/ :P

Specter Phoenix

Smart@ss :P. I mean I got tired of the razor cutting me. I've tried all the razors that claim they don't cut and guess what, they lied heh.

You're doing it wrong.

Well at least I'm useful for something around here :).

Neil Black

So, there was talk of an Enderdragon raid? Also, what's the current server address? I've got free time now, so I've started playing again.

Specter Phoenix

The newest MC allows you to add and save the servers you like. I have Tomasu's and Kdevil's servers. The raid is happening on kdevil's which is mc.kentdev.net which I've been on but not really done anything toward building/mining on it. Do have a fortress going on Tomasu's server though.

Dario ff

Put a date for the enderdragon raid and I'll pop in, even if badly geared. Just a set date using UTC I guess, like we did last time for the mineaggedon on BAF's server. :D

video

video

video

I could try and record the fight.

Specter Phoenix

It will be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG fight. I did it in creative mode where I was able to fly and it still took a long time due to the amount of health it had. Not to mention every hit makes it change direction while flying. The end is randomly generated like the rest of the world but for the most part it has always been little masses of land sometimes connected sometimes not with oblivion below you so you can't fall.

CGamesPlay

Whoa, what happened to the arena?

MiquelFire

If you're talking about the video, some must of placed some TNT in a spot that set off the whole thing before I was set to get everything on film.

Neil Black

Yeah, we're going to need a lot of well-geared people for an Enderdragon raid. I've got some iron on that server, but I don't know if iron equipment is going to be good enough.

kdevil

It's not so much the Enderdragon as it is all the Endermen we're going to accidentally look at. If you're going with iron armor, you might want to bring along a spare set. :)

For the raid, how does Thursday at 7PM EST (2400 UTC) sound?

Do they not like it? Last I saw they only care if you attack them. Like wolves.

Neil Black

Wear pumpkins, then the endermen don't care.

23yrold3yrold

Yeah, the End Endermen didn't seem to attack in the video. Maybe they have different behavior from the normal Endermen? Or maybe I'm just looking wrong. :P

BAF

They're supposed to attack after you look away, according to what I've read on notch's blog.

23yrold3yrold

That's what normal Endermen do, yes ... like I said, the ones in the video don't seem to care. However, I just did a little research and found my error ...

Quote:

Endermen will not attack you unless you look at them by pointing your crosshair on them. In creative, they will only attack you if you punch them.

So ... I guess that explains that.

Neil Black

I've only been to the End in creative mode, and I don't know if creative mode changes how they react to you.

Also, Thursday works great for me. It's one of the few nights where I do nothing.

Thomas Fjellstrom

crosshair? Maybe I'm playing a different game? In multi player I don't get no stinking crosshair.

23yrold3yrold

/log in real quick

I do.

Specter Phoenix

Maybe he is joking and meaning a gun scope crosshair. I personally don't consider the cross on the screen really a crosshair just view point reference.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I suppose you could consider that a crosshair. I more associate them with guns and other projectile weapons, and usually its more than just a +.

Specter Phoenix

Yeah that is kind of how I think when I hear crosshair. Sadly almost all first-person perspective games refer to it as a crosshair. Oh well.

Dario ff

Also, Thursday works great for me. It's one of the few nights where I do nothing.

Cool, my schedule at the moment is do nothing for a month. :P I wished so hard for holidays while I was on high-school, but being in uni now is almost making me wish for more classes. :-/ Weird.

Anyway, Thursday works out for me I think. 9 PM in my timezone.

Specter Phoenix

Would take part, but I'm always AFK so much that I'd either be dead or useless. Everyone else have fun though.

Neil Black

Does our Nether have a fortress? I was going to make some potions, but you need nether warts for them, and apparently those only spawn in nether fortresses.

kdevil

It's a bit of a walk, but yes, we've got nether fortresses. There's an enclosed path to it, though, so at least it's not too dangerous getting there.

I've planted some nether wart near the town portal, too.

Neil Black

Just so we've got a rough headcount, who plans to join us for our epic battle against the Enderdragon tomorrow evening? Also, let us know what equipment you'll be bringing so we have an estimate of the group's power.

I'll be wearing enchanted iron. I'll also be bringing some healing potions to share among the group.

23yrold3yrold

Good lord, I feel out of touch. Enchanted iron? Cue "back in my day" old man rage ...

Neil Black

Enchantments and potions are new to me too... and so very fun!

Enchanting is a bit confusing to me. I'm not sure how to get a particular enchantment that I want.

LennyLen

I'd love to join in, but this is the busiest time of the year at work, so I'm pretty much just working and sleeping.

Dario ff

Good lord, I feel out of touch. Enchanted iron? Cue "back in my day" old man rage ...

"Back in my day, we'd use Diamond gear and nothing else, and WE LIKED IT."

Anyway, let's join in today at 24:00 UTC and start dropping WoW references in the ender-dragon raid. ;D

Neil Black

We have slain the Enderdragon.

The dragon needs some work. It mostly just swoops around the sky while you shoot at it. It's got a lot of health, but as long as you don't look at the Endermen there's almost no danger of dying. Even if you run out of arrows, you can just stab it with a sword as it swoops in. A bit disappointing, but there's good potential for improvement if Mojang tries.

bamccaig

That said, not looking at the Endermen is easier said than done. :( I accidentally looked at one towards the end of the battle. IIRC, what actually happened was that I stopped to say something in chat with my crosshairs pointed forward, and an Enderman moved into them. >:( The Endermen outrun you so I was defenseless and died... :( I ended up missing the final blow to the dragon. :'(

The text at the end is a bit hard to keep up with, IMHO. I was fine for the first 30 seconds or so, but eventually I was met with a few paragraphs of text and it got out of control. I tried experimenting with keys to slow or pause the scrolling, but I instead exited from the ending sequence and respawned back in town. >:( Note to game developers: if you're going to show the player scrolling text you should make sure the player is able to control the rate at which it scrolls. It's useless showing text to a player if they can't read it in time (for any reason whatsoever: a speed reader might have to go grab a misbehaving pet or child in the middle of the dialogue).

Thomas Fjellstrom

A bit disappointing, but there's good potential for improvement if Mojang tries.

That doesn't seem likely. Notch got bored with the game months and months ago, and recently completely stopped working on MC itself. Left it to one of his minions.

bamccaig

Perhaps, but it's unlikely the next thing they do will be anywhere near as successful. They might as well please the people that made them successful and keep them loyal instead of turning their backs on them. We're more likely to buy the next thing if they make Minecraft's end great.

Neil Black

Yeah. The Enderdragon is one thing they really shouldn't skimp on. It should be epic enough to feel like an ending to the Minecraft adventure. If they don't fix it, I may have to take up modding. :-X

Thomas Fjellstrom

What adventure? All they seem to have bothered with is some generated locations, enchantments and that dragon. Still not much of an adventure mode. From what I remember hearing back in the day, 1.0 was supposed to be full adventure mode. Looks like they just decided to fuck it all and release it half baked. Whatever, I still have fun with the regular multi-player mode.

Specter Phoenix

Yeah for a long time they went on about Adventure mode and quests and all that being in 1.0 and now the release 1.0 and it makes you want to go "This is 1.0? This is it?! Really? This ...is...it...?! I'm going to play Super Mario Bros on NES, it's more entertaining!"

Neil Black

I meant adventure as in the regular gameplay, not a separate game mode.

Elias

I quite enjoyed the fight. But it seemed much too easy. Never looking at an enderman was enough to make me not lose even half a heart during the whole time.

In fact I was reminded a lot of dragon fights in Skyrim - there I'd look for a location where it couldn't hurt me and then kill it in much the same way: shooting lots of arrows at it over a long time until it's finally down.

Neil Black

I'd like to see it have some sort of breath weapon. We were all just standing there in a cluster shooting at it. A damaging aoe would make us scatter. It would also be nice if it landed and attacked with melee. That could cause people to look at Endermen more often.

I think my main problem with the fight, though, is that I never felt threatened. It can't actually kill you unless you're really unlucky.

bamccaig

The Endermen pretty much seal your fate once you look at them. They all just swarm you. You can't seem to kill them. At least, my arrows seemed to only make them teleport. You can't outrun them (unless maybe you have the potions to do it and are fast enough to drink them). I think it's lame that the dragon is virtually harmless, but if you happen to look at one of these guys wrong you're pretty much fucked... :-/ It would be better with far fewer, mortal Endermen that always attack, and a dragon that has both ranged and melee attacks.

Neil Black

Individual Endermen only attack if you look at them. Looking at one will only aggro that one.

Of course, once you've aggroed one you have to look at it to fight it. And with your eyeline low you're likely to look at more, which is probably what happened to you. This is exactly why I think the Enderdragon should land at some point

A more organized group should have a couple of guys whose job is to fend off any Endermen that get aggroed.

Also, does anyone know if the Enderdragon can be fought more than once? He'd make a good XP farm.

Thomas Fjellstrom

See I haven't had that problem. I've looked at endermen before and not had them attack me. Only once I've attacked them did they then start stalking me, as far as I'm aware.

I don't play creative. This is purely what I've seen on multi player.

Dario ff

Our raid turned into a 5-man dungeon anyway. :P I died at first because of endermen swarm, but then I just entered the portal again naked with a bow and a stack of arrows, and didn't die at all. :o

Specter Phoenix

I meant adventure as in the regular gameplay, not a separate game mode.

Yeah when I said that I wasn't really paying attention to how I was wording it. The survival mode is the adventure mode. They kept saying they were going to have it in 1.0 and all we got was the Enderdragon, villages, and nether fortresses.
