Mice

I've never bought expensive mice. That was no problem until 4 years ago or so, when my old, basic and simple Logitech mouse broke down after 10+ years (I simply couldn't fix the inner cables once more ^^).

Then I got a series of new ones. Most of them didn't last longer than one year, some only months. Maybe I do something terrible to them, I don't know. But the problem is they all started to double-click on their own when they should only single-click and that they stopped dragging on their own when they shouldn't. Which is quite annoying. >:(
Now the latest iteration is also starting to show the symptoms.
I've never encountered this problem before, so I've got the impression quality has worsened considerably.

My question: What mice do you have? Did you encounter these problems? Can you recommend something?

Never had those problems. I had an MX510 for nine years before the microswitch for one of the main buttons wore out. Last August I replaced it with a G400s, which has been 100% reliable so far.

Before that again I had a Logitech Pilot Mouse for 4-5 years, no problems there either. It probably still works just fine, but I don't feel like using mechanical mice anymore.

So... buy Logitech? ;D

I've been using a razer deathadder 2013 for a bit over a year. No issues, except that the shape is a little bit larger than I'd like and I had to calibrate it to reduce the LOD. They're quite expensive though and if you do find a cheap one, it's probably fake.

Used a cheap mouse before that, but couldn't stand the low malfunction speed.

I currently have a G500

I was in a position where I feel that good mice, the cheapest Logitech, or gaming mice. There was a period where I would be buying mid-range mice and the left button would suddenly start to double click (one mouse actually had issues with the scroll wheel)

Thats a common problem in electronics. They produce the devices so that they are broken when the guarantee is over and you have to buy another one. In many cases they do it with cheap electrolytic capacitors as they get dry soon, especially with heat. I believe the problem with the doubleclick could be caused by this. Try changing the capacitors. 8-)

I've got at least eight Microsoft Intellimouse (3-button and 5-button). None of those "ergonomic" crap ones.

hardware-intellimouse01.jpg

8-)

They go out after awhile but you can replace the buttons with nothing more than a soldering iron.

I used to prefer the 5-button ones but those back/forward buttons on the side were so darn sensitive you'd mess up your web surfing more often then not. I should just mod the 5's with an on/off switch to disable them unless I'm playing a game.

Anyhow, if you do like those mice, these guys have a whole thread dedicated to modern replacements:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MouseReview/comments/2q1ke8/gaming_mouse_similar_to_microsoft_intellimouse/

Additionally, /r/MouseReview is apparently a place where people with way too much time on their hands do nothing but review... computer mice. I just found out about it while searching Google images for those pictures.

OH, other than the super-sensitive side buttons, the only other flaw is the ridiculous 90's/early 00's "bright as hell" red light that shoots out of the clear plastic on the back. If you have a desk in front of your bed, it'll burn your retinas out when you try to go to sleep. But a simple Sharpie or electrical tape can fix that.

It should be noted that most mice have pretty standard switches on the breadboard. So if yours fail, it could be nothing more than a defect (and not the whole mouse line) and you can replace them a dime a dozen. As you know, the other common failure point is the wiring in the front coming apart from the flexing movement. That's not as easy to fix, but it's still fixable if you have patience.

Thank you so far. I will check out the models you mentioned later.

Yeah, I thought so, too. Problem is, while you saw an obvious screw at the bottom of my old mouse, I'm not even sure how to open my current one - except from forcefully tearing apart all that plastic. >:(

I have a Logitech G9. I have had it for about 5 1/2 years (ordered on 2009 December 1). In my opinion, it is one of the best mice in the world. And it shows. Logitech discontinued them and it has nothing like it in their current lineup. I don't think that anybody does. It seems that they don't make mice like that anymore. I've tried ordering the latest mice from Logitech, and I hate them. I returned them. They do not have anything currently that suits my taste. And I haven't been able to find one from any other vendor either.

You can still find an upgraded G9, the G9x, on Amazon, but the price is marked way up due to the low supply and high demand for them. I think you'll pay $300-400 for a "new" G9x on Amazon or E-Bay. That's a little bit steep for me right now, but if I had the change and could be relatively certain that the mice was really "like new" I might be willing to make that investment... As it is, I'm just hoping my G9 lasts until Logitech pulls their head out of their ass. As far as I'm concerned, you might as well buy a Walmart special for $10 because no amount of money you spend on the latest lines will get you anything extra.

Look under one of the rubber pads or stickers, you're likely to find screws there. :)

I've probably had 3 mice over the past decade. I started out with a nicer Logitech, but eventually that one started doing the double click on me. So I took over using a spare Rosewill one that I got for $1 on Newegg. That finally died on me just the other day, so I replaced it with a wireless Logitech one which, after a couple of hours of use last night, has worked great so far. :P

I used to have one, but the position of the buttons on it made it fit the size of my hand so badly (no matter which attachment I used) that I got cramps using it and gave it to a friend. He ended up having the same problem with it. I've heard a few other people say the same thing about it, which might have something to do with why the line was discontinued (though I suspect that it's the over-complexity from a manufacturing point of view that had more to do with it).

The Logitech G502 is the mouse that I most recently tried, and that was the experience that I had with it. My hand was immediately cramped from using it and despite trying it out for about a week that continued to be my experience with it.

I'd say that the way a mouse fits your hand is very dependent on the mouse. I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all mouse that fits well. Most mice are just designed to be operated from a few control points with your hand just hanging off of it, whereas gaming mice have more control edges and don't really afford you that luxury, but if it fits then it fits great.

I don't see what's so "overly-complex" about the G9. The main feature lacking in modern mice is the sum of the weights. You can't get a heavily weighted gaming mouse these days, as far as I could find. Of course, the shape of the G9 happens to fit my relatively small hands quite well too.

Most of the other Logitech mice form the same time share the same body, so you can do a long run and produce the parts for many models easily. Having to switch moulds to do a short run of a different body is costly, as it can take a few hours to winch out the old mould, winch the new one in and then calibrate it. The extra packaging required for the extra parts the G9 has would have cost a lot (in labour time) as well. The G9 didn't cost much more to buy than some of the other Logitech mice to buy, but the production costs would have been substantially higher, which makes it far less profitable,

Thank you. So basically, you all seem to use high(er)-quality gaming mice. Ok, I'll look into these in the hope for some quality, although I don't really need a gaming mouse. ::)

A Microsoft mouse I had some months ago didn't like my desk very much, so I didn't even come to the point of destroying the buttons. By using them normally.

Anyone know of higher button mice? How high do they go? 7? 9?

I recall a silly one with a key pad dedicated to just the thumb. It didn't look very practical.

Imagine accidentally pushing buttons every time you move to the right? God, it's like VLC on a keyboard all over again. Any time you so much as hover your hand over the keyboard, VLC triggers some god-awful hard-to-undo effect that leads you on a search through the key list and stack overflow just to fix. Guess what, your movie is now playing at 2:3 speed, cropped to 160:2259 ratio, has changed the audio track to Spanish, and the subtitles are offset. :-[

With the design of my mouse, the software allow me to customize what about to 10 buttons though I use only 6. Three are the left middle and right, then two for scrolling left and right (I hit that so often when I first got that I actually disabled those two)

The next two, that I haven't found a reason to remap yet, were to turn the DPI up and down.

Then by the thumb, three buttons that I mapped as Ctrl+Tab, F5, and Ctrl+W

Chris, that is a Logitech G600 MMO Gaming mouse.

You would be surprised how fast you can get used to all those buttons at the side.
I had a chance to try this mouse and its really awesome. It really changes the gaming experience by eliminating a lots of point-and-click-a-skill mouse moves.
On the other hand, it wont help you much in a games like Counter Strike or Quake 3 Arena or with your daily work.

Its an excellent mouse when used for the the job that it has been made for.

@LennyLen That is the one.
I guess it is still valuable the price has not changed over the years.
I use this for DOTA 2 gaming very fast pace game that requires lots of precise and fast pace chained mouse movements and clicks.
