Linux without re-partitioning my harddrive?

Yes, I do live in the US.
Rey: I don't care what brand, just whatever you don't mind using up :P. And my shiny new CD-RW drive has had no problem reading cds burned up to 52x! So, whichever you feel like.
How would I pay the shipping, though? Like, when it arrives, or would I have to send some money to you? (I suppose you don't live in the US, so that would be tricky...)

I live in the US. I don't really care about shipping unless it is more than a dollar or two. If you privmsg me your address, I can figure out how much shipping would be and send you topogilinux

while were on the topic of neat linux programs...

:)

Yup. Win98 is a cool linux program!!!!!!111``` ;) And its not running in Bochs. I'm using QEMU, its about 65 times faster than Bochs by QEMU's benchmarks.

So, you could get Windows 98 to run in Linux which is running in 98?

I wonder how much of that loop you could get working without you computer slowing to an unusable speed...

Actually, I can't seem to get 98 or 2k to install properly :o I'll have to see if theres something I'm doing wrong.

edit: hmm. I changed to using a plain "raw" image (using qemu-img) instead of a qcow image, seems to be working smoother.. have to wait and see if 98 will install properly this time :)

The Windows version looks fine, at least working with Knoppix booting the ISO image. I guess other operative systems that are installed in the virtual hard drive are slower.

why would they be any slower than knoppix?

ReyBrujo

Because Qemu only reads from the ISO, while on those systems must read from hard disk and ISO.

If it doesnt have to emulate a Harddrive, it should be faster. Also, no install ;)

Okay, back on my original topic...
Thanks to BAF and ReyBrujo for trying to send me CDs of Knoppix and Topogilinux...hope it all works out!
In the mean time, I'm downloading the Damn Small Linux ISO (it's gonna take another 3 hours and 15 minutes yet, ouch!). It looks really cool, I just hope I can get my sound, video card, and modem all properly working. Shouldn't be a problem, right? The screenshots all look nice, and show it running a media player, and are online, so I should be able to get it to work!
Here's my issue:
I want to get online in Linux (would really help thwart spyware and viruses, huh?). The problem is, I can't just dial into my Juno internet provider, I need to be using the Juno software (it sucks, I had to return a Playstation 2 network adapter for store credit...). I've heard of a linux program called WINE, which allows windows programs to run in windows? I have 2 problems then:
1. Juno software is really bad. I think it may be too dependant on Windows networking stuff...
2. How would I use WINE on a DSL Live CD? I read that DSL is based on Debian and Knoppix (or something like that), so would I download for Debian? Also, I have never downloaded linux programs, so I need guidance!

Thanks!

how much do you pay for Juno? You may want to look into localnet, which i use on linux, or this ISP which is free for x amount of hours then $1/ hour after that (they charge a max of $10 per month).

I think Juno is like $10 a month for unlimited access...I think the internet service is pretty good, I get good connection speeds (on 56k), but the software is disgusting. I can't even count the amount of times I've been playing Quake 3 and the software would just decide it wanted to close, taking my connection with it!
I would love to get a different provider, but I'm at the mercy of my parents...and they are very not into changing.

I got DamnSmallLinux, got it burned to a cd (broke 2 disks...didn't know that an ISO was a CD image...oh well). I got it running, and got it all set up. It's really cool! I'd take a screenshot of it working, but XPaint always displays the Snapshots zoomed to 100%, so I can't even save them as a JPG...
I love it. I even can listen to my mp3s! I think getting the modem working may be a problem...
I tried going through the PPP setup (I actually did this before in BasicLinux), and I "set up" my connection to Juno. I told it the correct modem to use (whatever it wanted me to use for COM2), and told it to dial and stuff, but it gave me errors that I can't remember right now, but they were definitely like "Couldn't run connection script" or "dial script" or something.
My modem is a Creative "ModemBlaster"...possibly not gonna work in Linux?
I don't think it matters, becuase there is no Juno software for Linux...which is needed to connect. Unless I could get Wine to work with it, but I don't know how to get WINE to work. (or how to download it, for that matter)

If your modem is a Win modem (I think they are known as HSP modems) there is no way of making it fully work. I remember there used to be a www.linmodems.org, but never had the time to check it with my old Zoltryx modem before I get DSL.

I'm not completely sure if it's a Win modem. I would lean more towards it not being one, though.

I'm interested in WINE (seems to be the best) to run the crap Juno software, and try to see if it will just run (if all else fails, I can run other windows programs under linux, so that would be cool).
I am completely lost as to what to download...and then how to install it. I think I would download like I was downloading for Knoppix, becuase from what I read, damnsmalllinux sounds like a stripped down Knoppix. (or at least heavily based on Knoppix)

Any thoughts?

[edit]
I'm downloading the WINE sources, and following the instructions at winehq.org...I hope DSL lets me compile them...

i'm sure wine wont run it. I dont think wine has ndis wrappers and such. To get my microsoft wireless pcmcia lan card working in linux, i had to use ndiswrapper. Good luck getting a winmodem to work on linux :P

aybabtu

Again, I'm not sure it is a Win modem...but with my luck, probably is.
Wine would be nice anyway.
Well, I'm off to try to compile them in linux...wish me luck!

[edit] DSL doesn't have a compiler...I'm downloading GCC now...
Quick question...say I download GCC (and get it to work), and then compile WINE (and get it to work), how could I just put those into the DSL ISO, then re-burn it? Would I have to have it booting off of the harddrive, or could I use the ISO file I downloaded? I don't know how I would compile WINE for DSL while not in DSL...which would be the problem.

Anyway, getting the compiler to work is the task at hand. This download is gonna take another hour and 15 minutes, so I've got awhile.
