dreadful, just dreadful. It's a fancy TV set top box.
... and seemingly only available in America given the content
I've read the article on wired and one paragraph caught my attention:
So the charge was twofold: the new Xbox had to deliver enough horsepower to fuel a generation’s worth of gaming—but it also had to deliver everything else: live TV; an OS architecture that allows for smartphone-style multitasking; a new Kinect sensor that can handle hi-def Skype calls and monitor your heart rate
Why does the xbox have to deliver enough horsepower to monitor my heart rate? Who the fuck even cares about that?
Why the fuck would I want smartphone style multitasking when I have the far superior PC style multitasking (ie doing whatever the fuck I want whenever I want). I read all the way to the end and it sounds like they really had to hack things to get them to behave right, a shame no one at Microsoft informed them that they already have all sorts of multitasking code resting in their Windows codebase...
Other than that I'm not really moved. Its not like there are exciting things to expect; Nothing about going from PS1 to PS2 to PS3 was interesting, it was just about a stronger machine and a new game lineup. I'm not really excited about interacting with a console via a camera because it feels unnatural and awkward to interact with a machine by talking to it and gesturing to it. I also dislike wireless interface elements (ie wireless gamepads) because its a hassle to change/charge batteries and to suffer the added response time, though that isn't anything new.
As for media center capabilities - I don't watch enough TV to care. Maybe if it came with a good torrent application and a quality collection of warez'd movies/tv shows/anime
Also, driving around town blaring "XBOX, Shut Down" from my car speakers and listening for the screams of anguish sounds like it could be a fun new hobby
•Why does the xbox have to deliver enough horsepower to monitor my heart rate? Who the fuck even cares about that?
Maybe it's not such a problem where you're from, but I've heard of cases of people dying from playing too many games. Maybe they're planning on having the Xbox 3 1 turn off if you're about to die?
I like how the URL says 8 even though the article is about 9 people. It's like they realized one of those people wasn't playing a video game.
I find the name "One" to be hilarious. It's worse than "360"! How many people are going to ask for an "Xbox One" and end up with an original Xbox instead?
Dunno for latency, my wireless controls run just fine, I can't spot any difference between wireless and wired versions but inability of former to hang on their wire, which is often really handy. But instead, you can rotate it 360 in all directions and it won't knot up, you also wouldn't trip on it's wires. Batterries don't bother me.
About time to introduce new consoles, at last. The ones we got are being outdated for years now.
I haven't noticed latency with the PS3 controllers. And the batteries are rechargeable over USB, and you can continue to use them while charging (it's basically like converting into a wired controller).

Not all Xbox 2 controllers were rechargeable. I never owned one, so I'm not sure if the rechargeable ones where just you had to buy a rechargeable battery pack or if it was a different controller altogether from the ones that took batteries. I've always been happy with my PS3 controller, though. Can even use it on PC. But the USB cord the controller comes with is only like a foot long, not very useful for turning it into a wired controller (unless using it on PC where you're typically not very far from the hardware).
Heart rate monitor might actually be useful for monitoring what stuff scares or excites people in games.
A horror game could act as if it were sapient, slowly changing to scare the user more and more.
Although I don't see such applications being used by companies any time soon.
Heart rate monitor might actually be useful for monitoring what stuff scares or excites people in games.
And for the ads! They'll know what pushes your buttons, and narrow the ads to whatever floats your boat.
I think I'll dust off the old Xbox one before getting the Xbox One.
But the USB cord the controller comes with is only like a foot long, not very useful for turning it into a wired controller (unless using it on PC where you're typically not very far from the hardware).
You could buy a 10' cord for like $10 - 20 though.
The 360 controllers had a pack thing, and officially there's two packs, one that took AA and a rechargeable one, which you charge either in a charging base, or with a cable you hooked up to the controller (like the PS3 USB charging cable, but the data lines on the USB end is only used to do the pairing for you, so you can change consoles/PCs with that controller easily. Too bad you have to buy a certain adapter to use the wireless controllers with a PC)
I've got 99 problems and an XBox One.
Odd story about heart monitors. I was at the doctor's last month and was put on one. The nurse said my rate dropped from 120to 60 bpm and asked me if I felt it. I didn't.
Not all Xbox 2 controllers were rechargeable.
They were all wireless and they were all rechargeable since forever. It's you just had to A) own recharge wire and B) own xbox controller accumulator pack. Naturally, if you used simple AA-batterries, you couldn't have them recharged. If you used AA-accumulators, you'd have to charge them with charger, like normal. Also, there's twin charger available for xbox accumulator packs, so you don't have to use the wire.
Too bad you have to buy a certain adapter to use the wireless controllers with a PC
Yeah, Microsoft used vendor locks, i.e. controller actually sends input data through the cord, it's just the firmware trashes it so there's "no signal" and you'd have to buy the receiver. On the other hand, if you had the receiver, you could've simply connect up to 4 controllers to it like normal, with no mess of wires and no need to have USB hubs, so having people to buy it makes a lot of sense. After all, if they weren't needed wireless controller, they could've bought wired one.
There's now the added news that you have to pay to unlock trade-in games. So that's me out.
I'll let the kids play on these so called consoles with the outdated graphics.
Me? I will experience Real Gaming™ on the PC Platform®.
I think generation 5 consoles will be like credit card receiver ATM with no controls whatsoever but credit card reader, so in order to get an achievment, watch a cutscene and defeat a boss, you need to pay some bucks. Every time you do it, of course.
Can you imagine, take a game to a friends house to play with people, but he now has to pay for it??
Who on this forum has friends?
I know Tomasu has some, but they only play pen&paper role playing games.

Heh. Just went and saw Star Trek: Into Darkness with one of them (many of them were busy unfortunately), and we get together for BBQs, game nights (video games), and just hanging out.

YOU CAN'T SERVE PRE-RENDERED GAMES TO CUSTOMERS

Aren't 2d sprite games basically pre-rendered?
Age of Empires?
Oddworld?
I remember an old DOS spaceship movie game. Like the game was pre-rendered movie sections but ou had to click stuff with the mouse and it'd either show a section where it crashes or where it makes ti through to the next part of the base. It was an interactive multi-media experience.
Just sprite graphics and pre-rendered graphics are different. See Lenny's post video. That's also one of those games, actually the one where QTE and cutscenes crap is originated. Technically, that hardly can even be called a game, because all you do is watch cutscenes while pressing a button when prompted with right pattern that you have to memorize. Even simple Simon game makes a better game for that matter, because it randomized the pattern every time. Those kind of games are like memorizing cheat code, only that your cheat code input is your whole game.
Maybe it's not such a problem where you're from, but I've heard of cases of people dying from playing too many games. Maybe they're planning on having the Xbox 3 1 turn off if you're about to die?
That's good! Then they'll die, but the XBOX will be off and absolved of any connections to the death...
Semi-official. £35 ($50 ish) to unlock a trade-in game. If sony follow I'm back playing tablet or PC games.
though at this price I dread to think what a new game will cost. Obviously it will be worth it with all the extra CGI they'll be adding to pad the game out
[edit]and it gets worse

seems they want to restrict who and how many can actually play a game....
... and I've just been reading about the TV integration, it'll use a IR blaster to redirect signals from a set top box. Except of course in the UK (and possibly Europe and the rest of the world apart from America) we don't use set top boxes - we have digital tuners built into the TV.
Holy shit, that would be quite expensive.
I don't really follow logic behind trade-ins of digitally distributed content. It's not like they would need your key back to sell it again, they just generate it. Virtually, you simply have your games for $50 (assuming you will only buy newer games you haven't played yet), but every additional game to your library will cost you a fortune. What's up with that? Couldn't they just sell their games for $50? I don't get it. Seems like one of their manager wanted to piss people off for no apparent reason, and managed to get this selling plan through.
Its the same bullshit as always online DRM. They're just pushing it to see how far they can take it. Just to see how deep up peoples asses they can push their capitalistic monster dick. Its pretty deep now.
People still don't care.
Yes, suddenly the $1000 steam pc sounds like a good buy
As long as its shaped as a companion cube.

That's the way it's always been, the price of something isn't what "should be" a "fair profit", but what are people willing to pay for it. If you don't like it, come out with a slightly cheaper, but still exorbitantly profitable version of your own. The resulting price war will even it out. It's called capitalism. OTOH, everybody seems to go to the government for protection from both competition and protection from "gouging" so it comes down to who makes the biggest campaign contributions.
Anyway, it's not like you need an Xbox One for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is what's known as an "elastic demand".
They aren't treating it like a trade in. More like a license, and the disk you have is just medium to transfer the installer. And you need a new key for every unique install, much like pc software these days. Anyone wanting to install off that media will need a separate unique license.
I really hope it blows up in their faces.
Maybe the smallprint for the licence for the new xbox one will say you are just licencing the machine and microsoft really own it....
The problem with digital distribution is once support is removed you've near enough lost your ability to play it as there is no physical medium. Referring to this, I laughed when I read the MS exec saying 'yes, I have no doubt you will be able to play the same game in 25 years time'

PS4, Xbox One, WiiU, matters not, have absolutely no interest in any of them. Even starting to lose interest in Ouya.
Because anything goes to shit when profits become The #1 Major Priority.
Even starting to lose interest in Ouya.
Ouya was a dumb idea to begin with. The reality is that no one actually wants to play shitty cell phone games on their huge-ass TV. It seems like a winning combination, until you realize that it's fucking retarded to plop down in front of the TV to play games that were meant to be experienced 3-5 minutes at a time

Not sure if trolling, or just stupid.
If you're on this forum as a game developer, you should know that awesome things can be done with even the more limited platforms.
Obviously, if it's in your living room connected to your TV, there aren't going to be games "meant to be experienced 3-5 minutes at a time" on the console. You're going to see games meant to be played in a living room, on a TV, with a controller. More typical games, like RPGs, side-scrollers, etc.
Saying Ouya or even Android can only do 3-5 minute game experiences is like saying "Windows can only do spreadsheets," or "Allegro can only do older-looking games".
The major problem with Ouya is its hardware is too old now. Too slow. My year old phone is faster, significantly. The new phones just coming out are much faster.
If you are interested in the idea, you might just want to wait till an updated version comes out with newer hardware.

Agreed it's dated already, but it's possible to mod the Ouya and add newer hardware, too. Not to mention that its current hardware isn't terrible, plus controller/HDMI support.
Either way I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do on it! It's powerful enough to run the game I'm currently developing, so I'll definitely be checking it out.
but it's possible to mod the Ouya and add newer hardware, too.
you'd have to replace the entire board. The slow parts are the cpu and gpu.

Still cheaper than buying a $400+ phone.
But the point I was trying to make earlier was that the type of games on the console has nothing to do with it running Android, or having hardware similar to smartphones. It's more than enough to run games of the caliber of VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy, etc.
For now maybe. Games on phones and tablets will continue to require beefier and beefier hardware. And the Ouya hardware is already 2+ generations old.
I've read it struggles with some things already.
append: also my fancy phone cost $250. gotta love google.
append: also my fancy phone cost $250. gotta love google.
Nexus I imagine? I could really use a new phone, I have a Galaxy S1.
Yeah, the Nexus 4. There's an updated nexus 4 coming out soon. I imagine it may have more flash, but it seems the major change so far is a 1080p screen.
Slow can still have good games on it. Rockstar games has hinted at GTA3 being released on it, Final Fantasy III is set to be released on it, and Shadowrun Online is going to be released. Also everyone keeps talking about speed, but if you want speed then get a PS4 or Xbox One.
Ouya isn't being released as a next gen console, it is being released as the first ever console for Indie developers. Look at the indie market, few of the games are Commercial grade 3D games, but rather simple 2D or isometric graphics and the mechanics don't really pull on the CPU or GPU that much. This is why I was interested in it, but as it gets closer to launch I just can't justify $99 to get it and not knowing if I would ever actually develop anything on it.
It does limit its future potential. Newer games that come out, that aren't just old re-releases will have issues.
Not sure if trolling, or just stupid.
Nope; just paying attention.
Every developer is thinking "I can port my Android games to OUYA", not "I can develop an awesome game that will leverage the controller + TV + living room dynamic." The truth is that the platform is going to be a dumping ground for ports for quick cash.
What are you talking about? Look at the large list of awesome game:
Newer games that come out, that aren't just old re-releases will have issues.
I disagree as, again, it is made for indie developers and I can't think of any indie games in the past few years that have pushed any hardware, especially hard enough to make Ouya hardware an issue. I know a lot of game houses have jumped on board with Ouya, but I don't see any indies without backing making anything that will cause any problems you are thinking of.
I mean, the the largest games that have been out the past few years, indie wise, were Minecraft, Terraria, and Torchlight (none of which push hardware that hard).

Sometimes it's hard to determine whether you're joking or not and all smilies seem to be relevant
However, what are the prices for these games going to be?
btw, I'm running firefox 21.0, why are all the graphics (like smilies, icons to the right of a person) one pixel down and the bottom row chopped off?
Sometimes it's hard to determine whether you're joking or not
Just click on any random game there and you will know if he was.
Ouya, still more games than on a Mac.
Personally, I'm more excited about the Shield.
All I see is one game, something about fisting...
I think the Shield is also one of those awkward devices. It's basically a tablet with a controller permanently attached for gaming. I have yet to see any tablet style games that are even close to console quality. With PC connectivity I can do the same today with my galaxy tablet, a PS3 controller, and Splashtop software.
I'm also not that enthused about the next gen consoles either. Wii-U is flopping badly and the PS4/Xbox-one is still running sub-par hardware that PC hardware has already surpassed. Sadly again PC games have also hit a wall with very little innovation lately either.
Of course I am also not a gamer anymore, I have a family and hardly any time for that so most of my gaming has been casual strategy games on my tablet that require zero thought and are free to play.
I believe the PS4 will pull ahead this console generation with Sony's game publisher support like Square Enix and the likes.
All I see is one game, something about fisting...
Have you got noscript running like I was? it only shows one game then.
But I looked at the games, they didn't seem that bad.
[edit]then again, I just saw barley break and the fisting game.....
If the allegro android port got finished and polished to a shiny turd somebody could make some money with a crap game in the early days.
but nobody has told me why all my smilies have the bottom row (and right column I've just noticed) of 1 pixel chopped off (i.e. offset right and down +1)
Neil.
Just click on any random game there and you will know if he was.
They look fine to me. I clicked on League of Evil, looks like a pretty fun platformer!

Thank you.

I just read a article about developer comments on the OUYA, and they said one of the main advantage to develop on OUYA is to make bigger and more consistant games. The second advantage is that they do not have hundreds of different hardware to support. That does not need that there are not going to be any port at all.
Yes they said that the OUYA would be rapidly overcome by new cell phone, but on the other hand, technology evolves so fast that you cannot go to the bathroom without getting outdated. Still, they made changes from developpers suggestions, they still have time to make some changes to the final product if it simply means replacing processors.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the XBOX ONE, yes the name sucks. (one XBOX to rule them all!) But besides being more powerful, the only thing they added is more goodies around it. The only feature that I found very interesting but that they barely talked about is the possibility to link tablets with the XBOX. That is something board gamers always wanted to be able to hide for example a hand of card from the others. But I am not sure if people intend to use it for this purpose. I Hope OUYA could, eventually, connect with tablets.
Besides being fat and ugly the worst part is all the marketing and licensing issues. I think they are somehow spreading rumors to test the terrain and see how people react to make proper adjustments.
The one game per player is horrible since a 3 kid family will have to buy 3 copies of the same game for everybody to play. I will not be able to play my girlfriend's game and vice versa. It they charged you like and extra 5$-10$ for an additional player, that would be far less worst, but still unacceptable.
Also, you could not use a common profile because they use the kinect to detect your face. Maybe you could use a mask when you login. But now they'll try to make scans each 10 min while you play. So you'll have to play with your mask all the time.
Second bad thing, in Canada you must use a specific TV provider to use it with the XBOX. But that provider is not available in the province I live. So impossible to use it. (I still do not watch TV, so it does not bother me a lot)
Being forced to connect to the internet once a day is just horrible. They still think everybody has an internet access with unlimited bandwidth. It also reminds me the story of a wanted guy hidden in a safehouse that decides to play video game, but his console was connected on the net, so they could trace the guy. So it get to the point that he could not even enjoy playing video games.
I don't know all the details, be it seems now that everything will be on the cloud. So you cannot actually own your save games. I hate cloud computing for many reasons I won't list. It's not a bad concept, it's just that I don't like the idea of applying it to everything. If feel like I am not owning my data and everybody could see it. Yes there are access restriction, but data that does not exist is much more secure than data with restricted access.
I was skeptical before even seeing the specs, now me and my girlfriend are not yet interested to buy the XBOX until we see it in action. For my part, I have my eyes on the OUYA. Personnaly, I am more interested in gameplay than nice graphics. I always say that I don't look at my car's reflection when driving on the road at 200 miles per hour, so what does it matter it my car shines ... accurately.
The second advantage is that they do not have hundreds of different hardware to support.
According to some sources, supporting Ouya could become almost as bad as the rest on Android:
Ouya Yearly Hardware Update
If you're bored of BF3 on the PS3 you:
A) haven't played it yet
B) played it, didn't like it, and therein probably believe in God and Santa
C) liked it but struggled, making you a pathetic loser
D) are mental
but yeah, new xbox wow, great...yeah...woohoo....ya....y....murgh.....who gives a....meh....
I clear my cache for no man
I tried IE as requested and the smilies worked, but I poked my eyes out before I could close it down
Seems it's just smilies, not other ones. I think I can live with that as I don't suffer smilie OCD.
