I've never worn a suit in my life. For grade 8 graduation and high school prom, I wore a rented tux... I've been mildly interested in looking into getting suits for a while. I may end up needing them for future employment positions, etc. Apparently, one side of my family is getting together next week for a family portrait and we're expected to dress up...
My favorite "colors" to wear are white and black respectively. I've always kind of thought that white suits look cooler than black ones, but I don't know the social rules for them... Does anybody know what they are? I've been told that you aren't supposed to wear white suits, but never really understood why... And since I'm more partial to white, I'd like to find out so I better understand what should guide my decision in buying a suit...
Any other suit-related advice is also welcome as I have absolutely no experience or understanding of them whatsoever...
Yeah, don't wear a white suit unless you're a gangsta going to your high school prom, or you're a gangsta making a music video. I've seen some grooms wear a white tux, so I guess it would be acceptable for a wedding as well. I vote for a black suit. You could reuse it for just about anything without looking out of place.
I vote for a white suit.
White top, black bottom.

When to wear a white suit?
Unless you live very close to the equator, it must officially be summer and above 72 degrees Fahrenheit to don the white suit.
Where to wear a white suit?
[...]
Also, unless you’re Tom Wolfe, you shouldn’t be wearing a white suit in the city -- which also means you never wear one to the office.
When to wear a white suit?
The 1970s.
The 1970s.
Michael Jackson was able to get away with it as late as 1987. But otherwise, yeah. Black pls.
Birthday Suit!
Birthday Suit!
So that's a second vote for white then.
Definatelly go for the black or dark one. If not anything else, they look way better than white suits. I've seen the white suits only few times at balls and I can tell you everyone's looking at you. And it's not always the thing you want.
From what I've seen the wearers were quite douchebags, who just wanted show themselves. What is more, it's quite hard to get suited up in the white, only good looking shirt under white suit is white and you can't go with black shoes. Basically you look like some pimp, gangsta from bad rap video or 30's era Mafia member.
Moreover you'd be frowned upon when showing up in this at work. I think your family wouldn't be pleased as well and if you plan on having only one, think about what would you do in case of attending funeral (that's openly asking for faux-pas). The only occasion when white suit looks good is a wedding and even then you have to be spouse.
That said go for the black.

If you can afford the extra money for a bespoke suit, it's worth it.
Purple!

Having been raised Roman Catholic, the only time I saw a white suit was at first communion. If the only other choice is black, go with it. Otherwise get a gray suit.
Hopefully you know who this is...
black suit and have 4 shirts of different colours and keep rotating the shirts

Definitely not white... Unless you want to look like a wannabe-gansta-dork.

My white suit preference was certainly influenced by Rufus Shin'ra in FFVII.
It may have begun sooner though. I always did like gangster flicks and the like.
Yeah, don't wear a white suit unless you're a gangsta going to your high school prom, or you're a gangsta making a music video.
So if I go for the white I also have to spring for a Glock... I can do that!
Or, rather, I could if Canadians weren't so anti-freedom[1]...

I can afford to get a second one, if that happens to come up, or even just for some variation.

What does that even mean?
What does that even mean?
It means you tell the suit designer what you want, or provide them with sketches or photos, and then they make it from scratch to fit you.
If you want to be able to use it as anything other than a fashion statement, pick a black suit.
It means you tell the suit designer what you want, or provide them with sketches or photos, and then they make it from scratch to fit you.
You mean...
I could have them make the baggy jeans-like suit in my imagination? Otherwise, I really think it's probably best to let them design the suit...
Of course, letting them design it custom to fit right and look awesome would be cool, but I doubt they can do that in the week or so before the portrait (unless I drop extra to speed it up)...
If you want to be able to use it as anything other than a fashion statement, pick a black suit.
If somebody else is telling me what I have to wear then I might as well hit back a little bit.
I vote for a white, baggy suit.

For enough money, you can go to the tailor in the morning, and pick up your suit in the afternoon.
My dad called me up and said that the store he was getting his suit from had a 2-for-1 sale on and that since he doesn't need a second one I can instead go and get one too.
That pretty much means though that I was stuck choosing from the sale items...
So I didn't try asking about a white suit or anything (THIS time) and just settled on a regular boring just-randomly-pick-one-cause-they-all-look-the-same-anyway suit.
Wearing a white suit is kind of like wearing sunglasses indoors. Or camo pants anywhere. (Except combat.)
I vote for a white, baggy suit.
It may well work. Though maybe a blue one, bet nobody thought blue instead of black or white.

Be aware of the fact that white clothes have to be cleaned every time after wearing them. Given that a decent suit is made of clothes that need professional/special cleaning (you can't just wash them) you'll need a few of them, go to the cleaner very often, or barely wear it, ever.
Black's more practical, because if you take good care, you can wear a black suit three or four times.
It may well work. Though maybe a blue one, bet nobody thought blue instead of black or white.
Orange?

This is one of my teachers from uni. Everyone remembers him, that's for sure. In a good way? Maybe not.
EDIT: He also has a purple, cyan, pink, yellow, green and blue one. He alternated.
Hey, wasn't that guy in the Dick Tracy movie?

Mokkan: At first I was going to post that picture, but then I remembered that they wore tuxedos in Dumb and Dumber, not suits!
Today is the day...
I picked up the suit yesterday and today I saw that it's quite a bit more blue ish than I knew (I wanted black, goddamn it). Apparently the tie is blue ish too. I just kind of let the salesman pick something that looked right...
But I wanted black! The one my dad got looks a lot more black so maybe the salesman was trying to keep them different, but I wanted black.
I don't wear colors, with the exception of jeans being predominantly blue.
I'm taking the afternoon off to try to find some shoes (I have the ones from college graduation, but they don't fit right and hurt my feet and probably won't look right with a suit anyway...
) and to hopefully get a haircut.
I have a feeling it's going to be a rushed day.
black suit and have 4 shirts of different colours and keep rotating the shirts
Why 4?
Black suit, white tie.
{"name":"01916.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/1\/8\/18e013663a6af5800f2eb4fec9ec1d41.jpg","w":400,"h":516,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/1\/8\/18e013663a6af5800f2eb4fec9ec1d41"}
But if its a family event, I recommend this suit:
{"name":"Special-Ops-Paintball-Hunter-Suit-Mossy.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/d\/c\/dceb32fb577cc1a0abea062748635645.jpg","w":560,"h":1202,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/d\/c\/dceb32fb577cc1a0abea062748635645"}
Never wear a black suit, black tie.

A white suit is good with black tie... especially if your buddy is wearing the opposite.

(pocket watch chains are mandantory)
If want to impress the Japanese, wear this suit:
