White Suit Or Black Suit

I've never worn a suit in my life. For grade 8 graduation and high school prom, I wore a rented tux... I've been mildly interested in looking into getting suits for a while. I may end up needing them for future employment positions, etc. Apparently, one side of my family is getting together next week for a family portrait and we're expected to dress up... :(

My favorite "colors" to wear are white and black respectively. I've always kind of thought that white suits look cooler than black ones, but I don't know the social rules for them... Does anybody know what they are? I've been told that you aren't supposed to wear white suits, but never really understood why... And since I'm more partial to white, I'd like to find out so I better understand what should guide my decision in buying a suit...

Any other suit-related advice is also welcome as I have absolutely no experience or understanding of them whatsoever... :-X

Yeah, don't wear a white suit unless you're a gangsta going to your high school prom, or you're a gangsta making a music video. I've seen some grooms wear a white tux, so I guess it would be acceptable for a wedding as well. I vote for a black suit. You could reuse it for just about anything without looking out of place.

Also, unless you’re Tom Wolfe, you shouldn’t be wearing a white suit in the city -- which also means you never wear one to the office.

Michael Jackson was able to get away with it as late as 1987. But otherwise, yeah. Black pls.

Definatelly go for the black or dark one. If not anything else, they look way better than white suits. I've seen the white suits only few times at balls and I can tell you everyone's looking at you. And it's not always the thing you want.

From what I've seen the wearers were quite douchebags, who just wanted show themselves. What is more, it's quite hard to get suited up in the white, only good looking shirt under white suit is white and you can't go with black shoes. Basically you look like some pimp, gangsta from bad rap video or 30's era Mafia member.

Moreover you'd be frowned upon when showing up in this at work. I think your family wouldn't be pleased as well and if you plan on having only one, think about what would you do in case of attending funeral (that's openly asking for faux-pas). The only occasion when white suit looks good is a wedding and even then you have to be spouse.

That said go for the black.

If you can afford the extra money for a bespoke suit, it's worth it.

Having been raised Roman Catholic, the only time I saw a white suit was at first communion. If the only other choice is black, go with it. Otherwise get a gray suit.

Definitely not white... Unless you want to look like a wannabe-gansta-dork.

My white suit preference was certainly influenced by Rufus Shin'ra in FFVII. 8-) It may have begun sooner though. I always did like gangster flicks and the like.

Yeah, don't wear a white suit unless you're a gangsta going to your high school prom, or you're a gangsta making a music video.

So if I go for the white I also have to spring for a Glock... I can do that! 8-) Or, rather, I could if Canadians weren't so anti-freedom[1]... >:(

I can afford to get a second one, if that happens to come up, or even just for some variation.

What does that even mean? ???

It means you tell the suit designer what you want, or provide them with sketches or photos, and then they make it from scratch to fit you.

If you want to be able to use it as anything other than a fashion statement, pick a black suit.

You mean... :o I could have them make the baggy jeans-like suit in my imagination? Otherwise, I really think it's probably best to let them design the suit... :-[ Of course, letting them design it custom to fit right and look awesome would be cool, but I doubt they can do that in the week or so before the portrait (unless I drop extra to speed it up)...

If you want to be able to use it as anything other than a fashion statement, pick a black suit.

If somebody else is telling me what I have to wear then I might as well hit back a little bit. ;)

For enough money, you can go to the tailor in the morning, and pick up your suit in the afternoon. ;)

My dad called me up and said that the store he was getting his suit from had a 2-for-1 sale on and that since he doesn't need a second one I can instead go and get one too.

That pretty much means though that I was stuck choosing from the sale items... :-/ So I didn't try asking about a white suit or anything (THIS time) and just settled on a regular boring just-randomly-pick-one-cause-they-all-look-the-same-anyway suit.

Wearing a white suit is kind of like wearing sunglasses indoors. Or camo pants anywhere. (Except combat.)
