SOPA/PIPA still won't matter. If a person is determined enough they will find ways to pirate software, movies, games and use copyrighted materials. The more they try to control the more people will find a way around it.

And the more of our collective time will be wasted on crap, which is why stopping SOPA/PIPA does matter :P

Even non-collective time everyone wastes their time on crap. After you do everything that needs to be done (chores and bills) everything else you want to do is wasting your time on crap. :P

I used to entertain the thought of buying things back when it was okay to own them, and I was referred to as a customer.

Now all I can do is lease a license, hope that the thing in question actually works with my equipment, and on top of that I've been demoted to being a consumer. Have you ever stopped to consider how demeaning that word is?

Food for thought.

Well if you think about it we are brought up learning demeaning classifications and taught the potential of hate from the very beginning. We are consumers, customers, citizens. Instead of saying human race, we are Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Native American. Hell even religions teach us segregation, instead of saying "Everyone sees God in other forms but we are all right." We get Christians, Catholic, Jews, Buddhist, Pentecostal, etc.

Finally something we can agree on. Not sure how relevant it is to the OT because I'm too drowsy to read it all, but yeah, we're all humans aren't we?

Some more than others. ;D

"one that acquires goods or services for direct use or ownership rather than for resale or use in production and manufacturing"
Seems right.

Hell even religions teach us segregation

It's very natural to both associate and dissociate. And also to organize and categorize.

If you take it strictly at face value, it seems fine. If you read between the lines it's awfully dehumanizing. Being a customer implies having a business relationship; being a consumer does not.

Yep, and the ones that think that probably thought slavery was a good idea but won't admit it outside their house. People know what the normal is and lie just to keep people off their case, but reveal their true selves to only their closest friends and immediate family.

I like how everyone trying to argue against my point has resulted to name calling, and otherwise ad hominem attacks.

Allegro.cc. Keeping it classy since 1999. 8-)

I didn't see anyone calling you names. You must have a very Thomas-centric view of the world.

For starters, I didn't say people were calling me names. Also, it wasn't "everyone", just 23:

My feeling is if you wanted it enough to obtain it, it clearly held value to you. So stop being a douchebag and compensate the creators of whatever you just took. Price too high? Do without. Stop being an entitled little twat.

Though your own reply has a similar feel, you can tell you were thinking it ;) using words like "entitled", "piracy", and "thieves".

Actually, I agree with 23. Ok, it's 2012, piracy also means copyright infringement these days. And people who do it are being douchebags. I don't like calling people douchebags, but their actions can be douchebaggish.

Oh no, someone using the word 'piracy' in a thread about 'piracy'. Also I didn't know you made a point, largely because I don't feel like skimming 80 posts of repeats. In any case, my argument was the first sentence, not the second. Don't let that stop you from taking your own cheap shots though. 8-)

Yes, people who take things feel entitled to them. Is this not a fact in evidence?

I would say anyone not pirating is keeping it quite classy, yes ...

I wasn't aware we were talking about robbing ship's cargo :o I must have been posting in the wrong thread. My bad.

Don't let that stop you from taking your own cheap shots though.

Nah. I'm above that sort of childish behaviour. 8-)

Given the definition of the word "entitled", anyone who claims they are entitled to infringe copyright may indeed be a douchebag. I certainly don't have a legal right to infringe copyright in any way shape or form.

Piracy is just another word that has evolved. There are thousands of them. Deal with it.

So the meaning of the word "theft" has changed as well? Good to know.

I think we should change the meaning of other words too, like "Value" could mean "meaningless".

Look up theft in a dictionary and you'll find many entries supporting my definition.

Cool. Let us know when that enters common vernacular. We'll wait.

How about "patriotism"? You gotta admit that's changed quite a bit.

[EDIT]

Sometimes "piracy" helps the company suffering "theft".
