I didn't say that you don't take the materials when you steal Mona Lisa. You obviously take the materials, but the value of the theft of Mona Lisa does not equal the value of the materials only. The value of the theft includes both the materials and the abstract value assigned to the painting.

Really, publishers and record labels have tried to pass laws making used book/record stores illegal in some form. It boggles the mind. And currently they are making it hard for libraries to deal in eBooks.

EA have effectively done that with their 'one time' pass codes stopping legitimate people (like myself with multiple xboxes) using the game they've bought. My simple solution to this wasn't piracy, I simply don't buy EA games anymore.

I stole it!

If you could reproduce the painting digitally with the same detail, then indeed you would have stolen it.

My simple solution to this wasn't piracy, I simply don't buy EA games anymore.

And that's the appropriate response to all this DRM and SOPA bullsh1t. Don't buy their stuff.

But this is not acceptable by the average Joe, who truly wants to play these games, so he has come up with the excuse that he is combating injustice with piracy.

The activism of people regarding piracy is unheard of in other more serious matters, and that's because people don't care about these other matters.

So if I went in the Louvre and took a picture of it with one of those multimega pixel cameras, it'd disappear from the wall?

I think the pixels doesn't matter but if the flash is too powerful I have heard those pictures are very frail you could burn the canvas... So yhea it could disappear... ;D

No. But you could open a museum next to the Louvre, with another Mona Lisa in it, stealing profit from the Louvre.

How do I displace the value of Mona Lisa without displacing the materials?

By copying it.

But then your copy isn't the original, and thus less valuable.

The image above is sharp enough to show the cracks from age, and therefore I'd suppose it's as accurate as the original painting as far as what it looked like when it was new, so all they have to do is go to allegro.cc instead of paying admittance to the Louvre. Of course it doesn't have quite the same bragging rights.

Trying to argue against axilmar again... Someone has a lot of free time!

The main problem I have with the author of the article is that he doesn't distinguish between the big label artists and the independent ones. If you want to boycott the RIAA and steal their music, go for it. It's illegal of course, but I can understand the thinking.

However, there are thousands of independent artists that have no big, bad label. You should be supporting them. If you care so passionately about making things right, you should go out and find them.

Ultimately what happens by these so-called boycotts is that the rich stay rich and in power because you aren't actually supporting anybody. It's much like how pirating Photoshop is actually more harmful to the small developer selling more affordable software than it is to Adobe.

So when you say "I'm not giving anybody a single penny," to me that shows nothing other than you are an unappreciative freeloader. All you are doing is keeping the current system alive.

Why I don't pirate.
Because I'm waiting for content producers to offer their products in a way that isn't broken in the first place.

That displaces some value perhaps, but not all. Thus, stealing != copying.

There are people who actually buy the product or whatever, then get the pirate version to avoid the DRM crap that can damage your equipment, among other things. Is it still bad if they've paid for it?

It depends on how authentic the copy looks.

The amount of value being displaced does not make act different.

If I stole $100 from a pack of $200, isn't that stealing? I stole half the value.

So when you say "I'm not giving anybody a single penny," to me that shows nothing other than you are an unappreciative freeloader. All you are doing is keeping the current system alive.

I said exactly that in my rebuttal.

A closer analogy would be if you counterfeited $100, making the original $200 somewhat less valuable, like the Feds been doing for these many years with the blessing of the same government that wants the evil Internet restricted.

Haha, that's hilarious. No, it's more akin to you taking $200 but when you "displace" yourself and the money you stole by leaving the building you suddenly only have $100. Where did the value go???
