I haven't seen the rivers yet, but the massive dungeons could still be generated chunk-by-chunk.

I played for the first time in months yesterday. There are a lot of exciting additions to the game! Nevertheless, I don't have any time to even pretend to keep up with you guys, so I probably won't be playing it ... Until an actual story or quests, etc., is added to make it a bit more about playing and less about tedious building. :P

I joined the mc.kentdev.net server yesterday for the first time in months - and I found a massive mob tower. I climbed up then fell into some dark waterfall and all the way down. There I tried to dig my way out of some glass+lava mechanism - apologies in case I destroyed it somehow. (Only very few monsters seemed to fall in so it didn't seem to work as intended :-X)

I don't even know how a "mob tower" works; I assume the Endermen mess it up somehow. :)

That was probably my Mob Tower, or Sev's. The Endermen pull blocks out of the channels, which causes the water to flow incorrectly, which stops the tower from functioning properly.

It can be fixed by making sure that none of the spawning floors are more than 2 tiles high. It's a tedious process on an already mostly complete tower however. I fixed the top two floors of mine then decided to go exploring for a while.

Endermen take damage from water, but I guess the water doesn't kill them fast enough to prevent them from picking up blocks.

Either that or they don't take damage if just their arms get wet.

edit:

The server is down again. This seems to be happening a lot more with the 1.8 update.

Kinda annoying too, since I just paid for an hour's internet to kill time during my break but now can't play. :(

I've updated the server to the latest version, which I think has a fix for the problem that kept killing the server (a StackOverflowError relating to transferring items in and out of dispensers and chests).

Update: I changed the design of the town's minecart dispenser, so it won't have any more stuck minecarts in the system (and as a bonus, lights an indicator torch when it's all out of minecarts), then went exploring. I like the new biomes, and I especially like that clay is no longer rare.

The only downside of the new biome generation code is where it meets the old generated biomes. In particular, I noticed a water biome that suddenly decided it was a mountain range. The new water level is 1 block lower, too, so there's a tiny wall of water on the border of old and new oceans.

I'm probably going to have to start a new local world just to mess with the new game.

Personally I've given up on trying to keep up with Minecraft. I'll play when it's officially released as a game. That is, something that you can call "beaten". :P

I think I'll always prefer the sandbox/builder style game over any kind of hacked up adventure/rpg thing they can possibly come up with.

If simcity 4 is what a sandbox is like then I totally agree. I've almost completed building cities in a quarter of my region of Timbuktu. One of my cities has a population of ~250,000 sims. I called it Zoo York!

Oh nice! I was happy to hit 150,000 in one of my cities (I noticed that at certain points, the population will spike). I love the ability to grow the region rather than just the city. I tried CitiesXL 2011, but it's missing that certain something SimCity4 has.

The first and last time I tried to connect to the new server (well, the server that went up after Baf's anyways) I got stuck in what I think was a starting area. It was a house that had doors, but they would not let me pass even when opened... I was unable to remove/break any blocks from the house to escape. That was really the last time I played (several months ago).

I've been playing Terraria in the meantime. I'll eventually play Minecraft again when Terraria becomes boring or when Minecraft is finally out of beta.

I got that a few times. It happens when there's too much lag.

How do you make an area uneditable by other players? Is this a plugin, or is this built in to the server?

It's a plug-in thing. A bunch of us have "protected" areas on the server ... though Creepers and Endermen can probably still wreck them ...

Well, the regular Minecraft server has some basic no-way-to-adjust-it-as-far-as-I-know spawn protection, which prevents changes to the area around the spawn point by anyone but ops.

If you use Bukkit, though, you can get the WorldGuard plugin, which lets you define regions, give those regions owners, set build permissions, and set other region properties (send a message when you enter/leave, allow/prevent mob spawning, disallow creeper explosions, etc.) ...
... which is a shame, because Bukkit hasn't been updated for Minecraft 1.8 yet. >:(

Hmm. Sending a message when you enter or leave ... is that something users can toggle for themselves?

I'm not sure, but probably yes. If they're set as the owner of a region, they should be able to adjust its flags. The command would be something like "/region flag <regionname> greeting Get off my lawn!"

I entered a portal to the Nether, and instead of finding myself at my tunnel rail system, I was in a cavern, next to a ghast. The portal was there as well, so it wasn't just my position being altered, like last time.

Any ideas?

I suspect you're playing one of the Minecraft beta versions.

I haven't done anything to the server itself, but I did create another nether portal in an attempt to make the portal in my base link to it. Portals are finicky enough that doing that could have thrown something else off. :-/

Incidentally, building and using a new portal in the nether is a good way to create easily-mineable obsidian on the surface of the normal world.

Also, Bukkit has been updated for Minecraft 1.8, so the server will be getting its mods back soon.

Edit: Server updated, and I hear that in 1.9, Endermen will no longer be able to pick up stone, cobblestone, wood, glass, and most other blocks normally used as building materials. :D

I'm back at y=129 in the Nether again. Can you move me to 277, 115, 270 please?

Done! No guarantee that it won't immediately boot you back above the ceiling, though. I really need to get around to installing a plugin that fixes this problem automatically.
