2D PC game

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum but not to allegro.

Firstly, I'd like to say thanx to the guys that put Allegro together. It's the best gamedev package for developing 2D software and hardware applications in my opinion.

I'm currently working on a 2D game that has a similar look to the old Final Fantasy games. Obviously it's going to look better and feel better. I've already worked on a game engine that displays a map, handles NPCs as well as movement and interaction.

As soon as I have a demo running, I will put up a link for it.
Anyone that needs some help with similar aspects and coding, please
let me know.

Thanx again Allegro.

What a humble way to say "No screenshot, no download!".

I made a game once that was more photo-realistic than real life and the controls were so natural that my grandmother bested professional Korean Starcraft players.

Here's a screenshot.

The game takes place at night, and also in an underground tavern without any lightsources.

Why have you not published this master piece? I think yu've got yourself the next (INSERT_BEST_SELLING_GAME_HERE) on your hands! you could make millions if you get a decent framerate out of that crazy photo realistic render engine!

That's old-hat. I've done one with the look of mirrors edge but takes it one step further. It's set in a future ice-age and incorporates an advanced snow simulator and a multi-phased 'total lighting' technique I've patented, though it only currently runs on Nvidia cards and DX13 using a firmware patch I created with the help of Bob.

You guys are too quick to be douches to new comers. :P At least let them post twice before assuming they're self-absorbed and then mocking them.

kilobyte: Definitely post some pictures up. I want to see your progress.

He posted twice. It just kind of seemed like an ideal Monday thread. :-/ Maybe he'll be able to wow us with a horde of screens and make us eat our words. ;)

There's nothing wrong with a little fun. ;D
Besides, we gotta keep ourselves occupied until the weekend when kilobyte said he'd be able to post pics.

Also, the game I made is really just incredible.

There's nothing wrong with a little fun.

I'm sure I speak for Jeff Bernard and his advanced night time simulator, but there's nothing funny about my multi-phased total lighting system. It tooks years to develop, and that was just the theoretical maths.

Well, I see you guys are a lively bunch.

Anyways, my game is not anything ground-breaking. It's just a 2D game running at 640x480 resolution.

I don't mean to sound so self-absorbed. I enjoy programming, that's all.

It's the first time doing something like this and I just want your comments. I'd like to see what you guys have done as well.

Here's some pics of my game, still in its early stages.

I'm also trying to add a real-time battle system where you go one-on-one with an opponent. The characters will use elemental powers. I want to make it more of an action RPG that involves shorter battles and a very simple level up system.

The main focus of this game is to implement a story that is long and doesn't use long battles to hide the lack of things to do within the story.

I hope the pics get added to this reply.

How do you paste the pics below the above writing?

Use XHTML image tags. For example, <img src="http://www.allegro.cc/files/attachment/603367" /> becomes:

{"name":"603367","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/8\/1\/81fd0315f43b237357a0a65f26de569d.jpg","w":642,"h":480,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/8\/1\/81fd0315f43b237357a0a65f26de569d"}603367

Or just use [square brackets] ie: [http://www.allegro.cc/files/attachment/603367] becomes:
{"name":"603367","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/8\/1\/81fd0315f43b237357a0a65f26de569d.jpg","w":642,"h":480,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/8\/1\/81fd0315f43b237357a0a65f26de569d"}603367

I really like what you've got going on there, except for the lack of distinction between floor, walls, and ceiling tiles. It just looks kind of flat. I think the ceiling tiles are the biggest culprit for causing that.

You can also use: <object data="http://" /> Becomes:

{"name":"603367","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/8\/1\/81fd0315f43b237357a0a65f26de569d.jpg","w":642,"h":480,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/8\/1\/81fd0315f43b237357a0a65f26de569d"}603367

Sorry I had to say it...

It just looks kind of flat

I don't know why you said that. To me that is perfectly 3D, he is using the crytek engine. ;D

You can make it look like the ceilings have height over the rest of it if you do it right. Right now they look just like darker floor tiles.
