Hi everyone. I bet you've created and played some of Allegro games. Most of you. Can you name me one of the best ones you've played? I've looked into that deposit, but it's very big and most of those games are just simple 15 minutes of writing, if you know, what to write. Reason for this is, that i'm interested what games there already are, since i'm going to create some nice RPG/strategy or platformer, after i learn that basic stuff with colision, to create a simple snakeman right now. So i get the idea what can be made with Allegro, to don't step too up. Thanks for your opinions!

You can make any game you can imagine with Allegro.

newn01 said: most of those games are just simple 15 minutes of writing There's the crux of video game programming. It's very challenging and takes a long time to learn how to do it. Though many games in the depot have the appearance of being simple, the amount of time and accumulated knowledge it requires is vast. There is a particular tenacity necessary to finish any game, let alone game that is done well. What you're seeing in the depot isn't the capability of the Allegro library, rather, you're seeing the challenge of creating any video game at all. Like Trent said, if you can think of a game, you can build it with Allegro. -- |

Well, this sounds very nice. Allegro sounds like DirectX to me now, but i think i'm getting something bad again. Anyway, it sounds as the game cretion process takes a lot of time. Yea, i can see that by trying to figure out that damn collide thing for an hour. Tried every way i know at the moment, didn't worked, haven't found anything on the internet. Yea, that takes time. But as i see this, if you would have the resources (information, guides, wikis, knowleddge bases and stuff like that) for the allegro, i think it would be possible to create a mario like game in a day. Although i don't know much yet, but well, i'm learning, trying to learn at least, trying to do something. Although, i won't be able to do anything with graphics, i'm just bad with photoshop, so i gotta look for already made free gfxes or something like that. Anyway, thanks for the... information. But still i'm interested in one thing. Actually thought just a second ago, are there any big games created in allegro? I mean commercial games. I mean i'm just interested, i'm not going to drop allegro or something, i'm going to create a few 2D games for sure, just curious.

In one day creating a Mario game? It would be a very basic Mario game if you could pull it off. Maybe that mini game in Mario 3... and that's if you get all the sprites and sounds made for you.

What was the name of that time-based puzzle game with the robot? It had a timed-based name and had a "Previously on <blah>" screen wipe. It doesn't seem to be listed in the depot. Arghh! In the same section are a couple of nice games sort of remember: The Pickles, Zep's Dreamland Make that. edit: Temporal

I liked Monster, that the moment I could purchase Monster 2 I gladly paid. If you manage to sell your game, (even if you don't sell as many as expected,) you must be doing something right. Especially if your users can just download it for free. If I had an IPhone I would have purchased it on that too, because the improvements look great. I think I will shush before I look like a sock puppet. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ |

Thanks everyone for replies! Hmmm, as for mario... Okay, it couldn't then. I guess i need more information on what's neccesary for game creation. For example that physics engine, i thought now, that it's with allegro library... Eh, anyway, i'm still into non-physics games, like view from the up, like snake. Later i'll need to gather that information. But currently i need to make the snake work, as my first project with Allegro.

I second Temporal again, here's the link to the website. As for famous games, have you ever played Icy Tower? It's not a commercial game, but it's quite popular. (I think there's a Facebook version, but all I heard is that it sucked) TranslatorHack 2010, a human translation chain in a.cc. |

Temporal is the game I was thinking of earlier. I still recommend it.

Mmm, Icy Tower, and all the other Allegro games from Johan Peitz are very well made and fun. I don't know how many hours I've wasted on Icy Tower... They're pretty simple games, but they're really polished and perfectly designed. After the Peitz games... I'd say some speedhack entries would qualify as the best games made. Even some that weren't even touched after the competition. Original gameplay often pops up there. I wish people would take those designs and build on them more. One specific game I remember is Bunkermaster from Speedhack 05. Some people have tried making larger games, and a few have managed to create rather beautiful demos. But I can't remember anyone finishing something large and impressive. Except perhaps Monster that someone mentioned. |

Yup, i've wasted some time on Icy Tower too. You know, "technology" class at our school was to make HTML pages... So while everyone's writing down, i play, after she gives us the exercise, i make it in a few minutes and keep playing. Lesson = 40 minutes. So yea, about 35-40 minutes of gameplay. Unfortunently i was sitting near an old CRT monitor with 60 hertz (pain in my eyes after ~5 minutes) and plus there wasn't any games installed on IT class (Python), would've wasted even more time on Icy Tower, hehe. Didn't knew it was made in Allegro, pretty nice game. As for the mario thing... Yea, i just realized once more and even deeper, that it's hard to create such games... I cannot even make a snakeman game. -.- Though not much info floating around, at least not enough for me about that... Anyway, thanks for the answer, still have them downloaded, but haven't played, was trying to figure out about the snakeman thing... :/

Another pretty well known Allegro game series is Alex The Allegator. It's written by Johan Peitz, who has already been mentioned, but I don't think the particular series has been mentioned yet. Along with Icy Tower, I believe Alex The Allegator 4 (a platformer) is available in popular Linux distro repositories (and more than likely there are also Windows binaries available). -- acc.js | al4anim - Allegro 4 Animation library | Allegro 5 VS/NuGet Guide | Allegro.cc Mockup | Allegro.cc <code> Tag | Allegro 4 Timer Example (w/ Semaphores) | Allegro 5 "Winpkg" (MSVC readme) | Bambot | Blog | C++ STL Container Flowchart | Castopulence Software | Check Return Values | Derail? | Is This A Discussion? Saucelifter (it says demo, but it's the complete game) is one of the best I've played. It's a remake of Choplifter. I remember it from the C64 25 years ago |

I hate to name favorites, but Saucelifter really stands out for me. I have it on iPhone too but don't play it much, even though it looks really nice and plays well. Neon Wars was one of the funner commercial Allegro games I played (though I think it was ported to some other library later). I've really enjoyed a lot of Speedhack and Tins games too, too many to name or even remember.
