The GDR? I thought you were from West Germany. I think that joke is about as old as the GDR itself(maybe even as old as the first incarnation of it when I didn't know about it). As old as the one related to game development of course, not the one related to communist Germany.:P..;D --- 0xDB | @dennisbusch_de --- |

I definitely downloaded and tried AllegroPak, but decided it was too slow for my purposes — by which I mean a software z-buffer was outside of my target machine range, not anything about AllegroPak in particular. P.s. looking back, I've now been using Allegro for over a decade... [My site] [Tetrominoes] |

Having unfinished projects means you lack motivation. I don't even have unfinished projects, that must mean I lack ideas... or that I'm lazier. -R |

Quote: too much to implement?
Too much ambition as compared to ability. As I already wrote above, I wanted this game to have everything and the kitchen sink. Two kitchen sinks in fact, and one of them gold-plated Things were going great until I started putting different modules together. It turned out that the game I wanted to make was too big a project to just make code up as I go (as I usually did up till then). Without a central design, the code quickly fell apart and it turned unmanageable pretty fast. To top it all off, it became pretty obvious that I wouldn't be able to implement everything I wanted. I had to throw some things out, but I couldn't decide which. That coupled with the fact that I spent more time refactoring than coding new stuff pretty much stopped the development dead in its tracks. Overall, I think that was too big a project for me at the time, both motivation-wise (we all know how difficult it is to stay motivated) and skill-wise. I definitely want to do a similar game in the future - but this time, I'll make sure to come up with a solid plan and a solid design (both for the gameplay and for the code) before I start pulling code out of my arse Let's make a deal - I'll create SS2 one day, and you'll make some great music for it --------------------------- |

Thanks! The sampler is GigaStudio Orchestra 3 - http://www.tascamgiga.com and the samples come from different distributers. My favorite companies are: Project Sam - http://www.projectsam.com - Great brass and percussion For writing I use Finale - http://www.codamusic.com - which comes included with a pretty decent set of instrument samples (but none that I use). It's a very expensive lot. In addition to the thousands you spend on samples and Giga, you have to have a specific type of sound card, good processor and fast drives, not to mention some good speakers to boot. But I decided I needed this stuff more than a car so... -- |

If I had many million euros, I'd buy a nice large castle somewhere, and let every Allegroid who wanted to, live there for free, as long as they'd be working on either the library itself or on projects that are either games or tools for creating game content/media. Of course there'd be a fine green park around the castle, so Allegroids could sit outside, drawing, reading programming and math books or play soccer, tennis and other fun games. In the evenings, the banquet hall would be a central meeting point to enjoy kingly meals and to talk about the projects, the world and how cool this dream is. Yeah, only a dream, as I don't even have a single million euros.:'( (And to face reality: If I really had that much money, I'd probably just play video games all day and generally not be very productive.) --- 0xDB | @dennisbusch_de --- |

I remember downloading AllegroPak back then, but I didn't use it for anything. I did try the demos and remember that foggy corridor! Anyway, as for my dead projects; there's loads and loads of them. I'll just cover a few: Untitled game (using Ogre) from 2005. Dead because lack of 3d models & graphics.. From the oldest to the newest: Untitled platformer / adventure game from 2005. Retro style graphics, yay! Untitled adventure game (kinda like Ween: The Prophecy) from 2003. Lack of graphics. Basically what's done is that first room and most of its puzzles. Jumpjet remake from 2002. This was interesting. I was attempting to remake this old game (its shareware version only, though) by taking screenshots and grabbing the sprites from them.. It was quite tiresome work.. Badlands (top-down shooter from 2001-2002). Now this is a game I would have liked to finish.. We shut down the development after 9 months of work.. There you go. |

Thanks guys! Paul whoknows: No demo available, sorry. OICW: Thanks. Yeah it was a shame to abandon that project, I had quite nice dynamic lighting system for the heightmap set up. With proper models it would have looked great. Anyways, as GameCreator said, really nice projects showcased in this thread! Shame they're all dead.. |

Mika Halttunen: Those are some impressive screenshots. Hope you manage to find the motivation to finish at least one of them. Everyone else: Some of those projects have pretty good potential. Also hope you become motivated to finish one someday. I think that the trouble with developing games as a hobby is that modern games have become so complex that they require extremely large quantities of assets. The job is too overwhelming for just one person, and getting a team together and keeping them motivated can be hard. One thing about game-development is that although it's fun getting your game to work, the fun parts are often interspersed with parts that are downright tedious. You just need to have faith in 'the path' and have enough perserverence to pull through those parts. Often when people start a game, they see only the fun parts. Also, if you've never finished a project, I'd advise you to make something simple. LennyLen said:

Just out of interest, do you have a project that uses AllegroPak (finished or unfinished) on the 'net somewhere? I'd like to link to it from the AllegroPak homepage as part of a gallery of programs that use AllegroPak (so far, there's just my demos). AE. PS.
