I got my hands on a copy of ma5king (thanks miquelfire) and am trying to compile it.

So far I'm failing because it's looking for a function named "al_is_path_present". It looks like this has been removed from allegro since 4.9, is that correct? What is the recommended alternative?

It was implemented as al_filename_exists(al_path_cstr(path, ALLEGRO_NATIVE_PATH_SEP));.
