speaking to my Mother and I was telling her that I could imagine being happy living in Canada told her about the likes of Trent, Bammers, Derezo, Neil Roy and Thomas and how nice you always are to eachother .

She said you could go there for a holiday next spring. So that's what I'm planning to do.

So I'm wondering if I could plan some kind of trip which involved meeting some allegro users mentioned above and any other Canadians who're on Allegro who I've forgotten.

If it's not possible but you could let me know, I'd be grateful for that too.

I can vouch for William being a really nice person to meet btw.

William, do you have any real awareness of just how big Canada is? Just because they're in the same country doesn't mean they're anywhere close to each other.

If you're in Alberta, you'll have 23yrold3yrold in calgary, Trentg in Canmore, and me in Edmonton. Though the drive from edmonton to calgary is a good 2.5 hours.

I think you could safely skip the maritimes, quebec, vancouver island, and the Yukon. That should shave a few thousand km off. still big though.

I am in Northern Ontario, and depending on how you travel you'll either pass right by me or way around me (as Andrei did). In any case, if you're anywhere nearby we could certainly meet up (though without a third person I think we'd be extremely awkward ). I can't speak for Sam H.^[1], but he'd come too.

I see. I didn't know Canada was so big and the idea of two cities being more than 500miles apart in the same country isn't something I'm used to at all. Thanks Arthur for making the point.

By the way, I've got no car (and more significantly, I don't drive) so I'll be using public transport.

Then somebody should also make it clear that public transport in Canada is terrible by your standards. I'm sure any European that has been to Canada can put it into better context than I could (since I don't use it).

There is essentially no public transport between cities. You have to fly, or buss it, and its not exactly cheap either way.

Some cities have decent public transport. Not great, but not too horrible in some places.

There is the railway for going between provinces mostly, but it's not going to meet European expectations. The bus systems are terrible in most cities (when they exist), and obviously flying would be super expensive. Many cities will also have taxis, but those too will be too expensive. So yeah, expect to be annoyed.

The (cross country) train here is actually more expensive and less convenient than flying. Most places have an air port. Edmonton doesn't even have a rail station.

Yeah, getting around with public transportation within a single city in Canada is fine, but the moment you want to go between cities you'd best be prepared to shell out some cash and spend a lot of time in transit.

I've since decided that the plans are ill-concieved because I am studying for a maths degree at the moment and also I think it would be too fraught and awkward to
go on my own to Canada. So for the foreseable future I won't be coming to Canada.

Personally, I love the train for travelling, it's a very scenic country.

I hope you have a good trip. If I were you, Alberta would actually be a pretty good choice. My wife has always wanted to go out west to Alberta for the Calgary Stampede, I'll make it out there one of these days.

We have a tour train that goes up into the hills and canyons on the outskirts of town. It's very scenic and definitely worth checking out. That being said, the Sault is not a destination for any passenger rail. I believe there is a passenger service from Thunder Bay (about 6 hours north west of us) to Sudbury (about 3 hours south east of us) but it bypasses the Sault completely. We of course get freight trains here though.

According to movies, those are really cheap... you just jump on when they leave some place then jump off again when near the destination.

But the help isn't very friendly...

I'm presently in New Orleans for new years eve. I abandoned the peace train magic bus after it was refused entry into mexico. Spent a few days in Corpus Christi and am now backpacking across the US with a guy we picked up on the peace train in Ohio. I'm headed to Atlanta within the week, then to Jacksonville and Orlando, then flying back home (probably).

Protip: Derezo has actually not left his apartment. He's just high as fuck.

Yeah, the whole trip has been one extended session of transcendental astral projection. I'm that good.
