Are emoticons always supposed to be sperated by spaces?
At the moment, they still display if there is no other text immediately preceeding them, so typing "Hi! :):):)" on a line will display three emoticons, but typing "Hi!:):):)" produces none.
edit (for clarity): The "Hi! :):):)" above (and here) was tampered with to stop it rendering the emoticons.

Indeed. Any preformatted block shouldn't allow any fancy formatting. Be it <pre> <tt> or what have you (in <code>'s case, it should only allow code formatting)
