Hello there. Just to inform you that my father has passed away this monday. He was diagnosed liver cancer 6 months ago, and for the last month he had been fighting all he could in the hospital with bone cancer as well. It was quite painful to see him endure that... He is at peace now, though.

He was a Colonel at the National Army and received all the military honors.

That sucks man. My dad's sick right now, and we can't afford to go to a doctor. We just have to hope he gets better, but I just don't know if he will.

My dad just got a stint put into one of the main arteries leading to his heart. He seems to be doing well. I can only hope the meds they put him on clear up the rest of the blockages. Thank god he started eating healthier the past year or two. It probably could have been a lot worse.

Man, I just had an afternoon out with my dad yesterday, and during dinner he tells me he came VERY close to having a major heart attack 3 different times this past year. Scared the living bejeebers out of me. Thank god its getting fixed.

When my old man dies (should be quite soon) ... i will be clad.. Only good thing he managed to do was create me . He has had alcohol problem for about 20 years and is having serious health issues nowdays and wont propaply live more than 5 years now (he is about 55 years old).

It does, as he had many projects to do and be more time with the family after retiring (he was 53).

Last night I dreamt something about my father, but I don't remember the dream. My father died two years ago, he was a bit over 70 and suffered from a lot of things, Parkinson, Alzheimer etc. It was an 8 year long downhill journey and the end was very obvious. Anyhow I was very sad when it happened, because the very end came due to a neglection of care at the nursing home. My mom took care of him most of the time, but she had to have some time off once in a while. At the nursing home he got an inflammation in his mouth, so he couldn't take his Parkinson medicine, which made him so stiff that the heart couldn't handle it. It was only a question of time, but anyway I felt frustrated and disappointed.

When I first read that, I just had to check your profile - you're living in the US of A? Even Cuba has a better health system than that. Human rights anyone? Anyway, that's bad.

Even the US has medicaid/welfare/etc for people who need it... but it seems like the people who know how to work the system end up with it more often than not.

Not quite. Cuban doctors are among the best in Latin America. So good actually, that lots of Westerners see them for cosmetic surgery, thereby helping to pay for the free healthcare for Cubans; so good that Venezuela is willing to trade their oil for Cuban medical know-how.
Problem is, because of the US embargo, drugs are scarce and extremely expensive. So you go to the highly qualified doctor, and he ends up telling you, OK, I know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it, but I can't, unless you can find me drug XYZ. So the healthcare is bad, but it being free isn't the reason.
Personally, I think that the best possible health care (I'm not talking luxury stuff here, just what you need to be healthy and comfortable) should generally be free for everybody. I'd rather pay 10% more taxes (or more), if that would mean free healthcare at all times. If I get cancer, by what logic do I deserve to either pay massive sums for treatment, or be left to die? Sure, it'd make things cheaper for those of us who are lucky, but at what cost? Healthcare should be a guaranteed human right. So there you have it, I'm a st***ing commie.

Its not exactly free. We pay premiums (not that expensive), and Taxes for it. And its falling apart Stupid ass gov't cutbacks for decades. Now even a massive cash infusuion wont help because the infrastructure just isn't there.

The old Albertan premier was pushing a two tiered health care system like the States has. Talk about stupid.

Yes because us Canadians, (where I live at least) would much rather sit in an emergency room for 6 hours because there are not enough doctors and nurses.

The last time I was in the emergency room I saw a man who had nearly severed his thumb (it was hanging off his hand) wait for 3 hours before he could be tended to. I was vommiting about every 10 minutes for a few hours and I wound up waiting for 6 hours...

I don't mind that people with more serious problems are admitted for treatment above me, but I do mind when everyone is waiting hours on end because the hospitals are short staffed.

I would think it would almost be much better we had national free healthcare everyone, and those with more money could go recieve treatment immediately at the cost of paying out of their pocket.

To be fair, Northern Ontario seems to be shafted by the province alot, maybe it's just this community that is experiencing these shortages...

It's like that over here, but public service is too awful.

I agree, but life could be extended a bit if you could see a doctor regardless of your financial situation.

It always helps to share, even in an online forum.

Severe injuries - like thumbs dangling from fingers - are seen within 10 minutes here. Illnesses are typically longer (60 minutes or more, rarely more than 2 hours).
There are a number of very poor doctors here, though. Just because you get in doesn't mean you're going to get adequate service.
