It probably did take a while, but I don't think it took too terribly long. I imagine it was made somewhat like this:

  x1   x2
  --------
  |      |
  |      |y1
  |      |y2
  --------

Basically, a team member was told that they'd get blue balls (hehe) at x1 and x2 at a given frequency. They're job, make the balls come out at y1 and y2 at another given frequency. Essentially, anything that happens in the box doesn't matter. You break up these boxes and give them to a few different teams and then put everything together.

There's a part where I can see the ball split as it goes to its next area.

When I saw it I thought I was looking at yet another wiring diagram for a German car...
