IOTD: Creature cards
Creature cards
Creature cards, by James Lohr

Having tired of drawing my game GFX with a mouse, and having purchased a decent scanner, I decided to try and incorporate some of my pencil sketches into my games graphics.

I've been into pencil sketching since long before I started making games, and it's nice to finally use the two together. The creature cards will be used for the battle system of my current project - a turn based strategy game. In essence each hero will have a small deck of cards and an attack constitutes a quick card game.

I got the nice effect of pencil on old paper by scanning in my sketches (on white paper of course) and then simply using the scanned-in images as alpha filters over the antique paper image.

Just so that my brother doesn't whine, he drew the dwarf and I the goblin (hence the two different styles) which do you prefer? I can't wait to start drawing more creatures! - Pencil is so much more fun than a mouse/tablet.
Both of them looks nice!
How come the poor dwarf is blown into pieces? - deps
That's neat. By any chance is the dwarf blowing up when he dies? - Chris Katko
The goblin is way cooler. - Zaphos
Looks nice! Any demo/release?

Is the dwarf blowing up mean the card was destroyed? - phate
looks pretty cool, but more like a book than a card... the only part I don't like is the goblins head looks sort of crooked but still very cool looking -- altho I like the dwarf better... - Michael Jensen
I like the dwarf, but the goblin is good too. I noticed, that the background of the cards are identical. You might want to add some detail there too, to make them look different. If your game has races etc. it would be nice if each race had their own backgrond theme (a pattern of somekind etc.) - Kauhiz
Looks good. I like the goblin more myself.

Are you going to overlay stats and text over the card? - Richard Phipps
Yes, the cards explode when destroyed.

That's a good idea. Perhaps I'll add a border, and use a different border style for each race. Maybe even getting more elaborate for better cards.

I was thinking of keeping stats displayed on the card to a minimum. Maybe just a row of gems or something to display the cards hp.

Not for a long time. - James Lohr
The goblin reminds me of some of those paintings people did before they got perspective down pat - a nice touch for a fantasy/medieval game. - mystiscool
