IOTD: Rocket Duel 2 - Now in 3d
Rocket Duel 2 - Now in 3d, by Trumgottist
Yep, now it's official. Rocket Duel 2 will be in 3d, but the gameplay will remain 2d - it's complex enough already! (Though I have some ideas that are unworkable in the old 2d engine, including some stuff that will take advantage of the third dimension.) So why am I now working on a 3d version of Rocket Duel? Beacuse I thought it'd be fun, and I also figured it'd be a good way to learn 3d-programming. Rocket Duel doesn't need advanced level handling (BSP-trees and such things) since the playfield is simple, so I can concentrate on the basics and leave the rest for future games. I have managed to put together the basic gameplay by now. Basic animation is also included in the AllegroGL-based engine (Thanks to NeHe's tuts - they're useful even though there is some ugly code in there. Converting it to a useful state is a good learning experience.) and I am currently looking into creating shadows (with help from the Nvidia docs). Don't expect a release anytime soon. Soon I'll get started on a collaboration project with an estimated timeline of one year. (It became a collaboration with me as programmer this time.) I don't expect to get much time to work on RD2. But I consider that mostly a good thing.
