TINS planning - May 2020

I don't know about you, but due to Corona virus lock-downs, I'll be mostly staying inside the house the next weeks, probably months. The Netherlands is not officially completely locked down, but it's a distinction without a difference, as most people are staying inside.

Anyway, this is the perfect time to get some game jamming done. It's one of the few events that won't have to be cancelled.

Therefore I decided to bring forward my TINS plans. TINS 2020 Will be planned in a weekend in May. I'm currently eyeing May 15-17. Please let me know if you are OK for that weekend, or if you prefer any other weekend in May.

I would organize it even sooner, but I'd also like to try to join Ludum Dare 46, which will be held April 18-21, and I want to have a bit of space in between events.

Spain is locked and they have lengthened the quarantine. Maybe we'll still locked in May, so let's go.

Maybe I join Ludum too.

I'm down with this. Should be able to get some time off work.

I'm not really down with the kids on what TINS involves vs the old speedhacks. Can anyone enlighten me?

It's really very similar to speedhack:

  • It's also 72h competition, From Friday noon UTC, to Monday noon UTC.

  • A set of rules are announced at the start of the competition, these rules are drawn randomly from a list. The game should adhere to these rules

  • You can compete alone or in a team

  • You should submit your game in source code form, so people can recompile it for their own system

  • Afterwards, the participants review & vote to decide a winner.

Over the years, there have been some tweaks compared to the original speedhack:

  • The requirements for code re-use are different: code that you wish to re-use must be made available online.

  • Size limit has increased. I've introduced a special "retro badge" for sticking to the old size limit.

Finally, I want your opinion on another rule change:

  • I'd like to make the use of Allegro optional. I still want this to be an Allegro community event, but at the same time, the number of participants is dwindling. It might help to revitalize the event if I can invite a few colleagues to join, but they might not all want to learn C++/Allegro.

Edgar: ha, I just realised that exact link is on the front page. I'm observant.

code that you wish to re-use must be made available online.

I wanted to ask about this: how long beforehand? I see TINS 2017 said 2 weeks, but the more recent KrampusHacks haven't specified a timeframe.

Two weeks is good I think.
Krampushack really has a different set of rules, it was much less strict.

I've took notes of the 2 dates, we will see.

I'm open to more competitors. 8-)

Anyway, if they don't want to learn C++/Allegro, then learn Pascal/Allegro.pas. ;D

<edit>Quoting is broken? ??? It fixed itself ??????

I'd prefer 22-24 since 16th is my wife's birthday and she probably wants to spend the day out hiking. We usually go backpacking the entire weekend for her birthday but probably not this year with the lockdown and everything - so even if it is 15-17 I can probably participate in a limited way.

But if there's a vote then my choice is 22-24 :)

I should probably put your wife's birthday in my Agenda :)

All right, we can still move it. I should probably have made this a poll from the start, but (better late than never). Which date do you prefer?

8-10 May
15-17 May
22-24 May

Personally I have no preference between the 3 options. How about you, Niunio? Edgar? Mark? Gull? Elias, would 8-10 May work for you as well?

Any of those work for me.

I'm partial to any of the earlier dates simply to give my mind something to do. It's not like any of us have any medium to long term plans hahahahcryhahah.

I also like the idea of expanding the hack to broader audience.

Everybody can make it 8-10 May, Mark has a preference for earlier dates.

So 8-10 May it is!

I'll start updating the site and sending around some promo emails and tweets today.
