I've always found those old animations random. If anything, I'd say that the artists didn't have much of a plan and "freestyled" it. What came out was chaos. It's curious to question what came first: the music or the animation. It seems pretty clear that the animation is modeled after the music. I'd say those guys were true artists. They actually had imagination and talent.
