Format is: Good movie (from any time) + few sentences explaining why. If it's better on a big screen, 3d, directors cut, etc, be sure to mention it.

3. 2. 1.

GO.

Enders Game. If you haven't read the book, it's amazing. World is invaded by aliens, barely survived. Child geniuses think faster than adults, so they're bred from children in war games to eventually command the entire army against the alien onslaught. Lot's of excitement I've intentionally left out. Very pretty. Great emotion from lead actors. Definitely less interesting on a 23" screen if you sit more than a few feet away. We noticed when we got closer, the details really helped you enjoy it.

{"name":"11173933_800.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/9\/a\/9a63fb7be6fa452c8f6087bb0d16d314.jpg","w":800,"h":1200,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/9\/a\/9a63fb7be6fa452c8f6087bb0d16d314"}11173933_800.jpg

Pacific Rim. Live action Neon Genesis Evangelion. Gigantic godzilla monsters invade, big mechs kick their asses. Two or three likable lead actors, almost everyone else is background noise. See in 1080p on a big TV with big sound. The sound effects make you feel every gigantic punch in your gut. Do not expect a political thriller, expect punching mechs and a less childish crew than transformers.

{"name":"MV5BMTQ3NzA1MTY3MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzE2Mzg5MTE@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/5\/7\/57038f5b7ec5a4a4b4173d63569010f8.jpg","w":486,"h":720,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/5\/7\/57038f5b7ec5a4a4b4173d63569010f8"}MV5BMTQ3NzA1MTY3MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzE2Mzg5MTE@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg

Snowpiercer. Global warming/something has killed the planet's atmosphere. Everything is cold and snow. The only livable place is directly in the view of the sun. A train runs around the world at high speed to keep up with the sun. All of surviving humanity is on the train. There is a caste system where the rich/elite party and rule from the front of the train, and the worker class slave and die in the back to keep it running. Lot's of cool details ommited. Korean film, 90% English speaking white people, complete with a budget Christain Bale lookalike as the lead. [Be sure to get subtitles for the 10% plot scenes spoken in Korean]

{"name":"MV5BMzA2NDkwODAwM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODk5MTgzMTE@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/0\/4\/040fe965420457788a9a69dcae20157d.jpg","w":493,"h":720,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/0\/4\/040fe965420457788a9a69dcae20157d"}MV5BMzA2NDkwODAwM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODk5MTgzMTE@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg

Captain America 2 - Winter Soldier. This is not a comic book movie. This is a political thriller disguised as a dumb comic book movie. It's got some big-budget stupidity to it, but overall, it's now one of my favorite of the comic book movies. They deal with mass surveillance (before the NSA leaks happened!), global power, and more.

The Drop (2014) Pretty standard gangster flick but just very well done all around, captivating me throughout.

Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) The story is very similar to Birdman, but without all the somewhat comical weirdness I didn't really enjoy in Birdman.

Back to the Future (1985)
This is actually my least favorite movie of the series. A well-executed adventure back and forth between 1955 and 1985. I love time travel (when done well)! I can't comment on how accurate the portrayal of 1955 is in this movie, as I was not around then, but it always felt overly cliche.

{"name":"MV5BNjE5ODg4NzY1MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjI3MzYwMg@@._V1__SX1465_SY878_.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/2\/a\/2a9a35c626acee55827b54a182824ca4.jpg","w":367,"h":500,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/2\/a\/2a9a35c626acee55827b54a182824ca4"}MV5BNjE5ODg4NzY1MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjI3MzYwMg@@._V1__SX1465_SY878_.jpg
Back to the Future Part II (1989)
The sequel to Back to the Future, this time a well-executed adventure touching on 1955, 1985, and 2015. What do you know? It's 2015 now! Where's my hoverboard? This movie is probably starting to show its age more so than the rest of the trilogy base on the future predictions now being in the past, with the scenes in 2015 feeling more like what they are: a circa 1990 envisionment of the future. Nevertheless, it is still an awesome adventure.

Back to the Future Part III (1990)
The conclusion to the Back to the Future trilogy. Now we focus just on the year 1885 as Marty, the protagonist, must get back to the year he belongs in: 1985. This film strays from the formula of the first two movies and doesn't have any back-and-forth between years. Instead it can be best classified as a western/science fiction movie. And it is still enjoyable at that, though again somewhat cliched.

Moon is a great, lower budget movie, with Kevin Spacey as a robot.

Two other predictions from Back to the Future II:

Florida will have a baseball team, we now have the Florida Marlins.
The Cubs will win the World Series in 2015.
I'm betting on the Cubs this year.

Brazil (1985). It's a satire about the weirdness of bureaucracy directed by an ex-Monthy-Python, influenced by George Orwell's 1984. And about dreams. And about terrorism. And a plumber. Well... at least that's part of what it is about. :P
It's probably not made for relaxing, as you'll miss quite a bit if you don't pay attention. I had to watch it quite some times before I didn't discover anything I hadn't noticed yet.

Knowing that the movie features Jim Carrey, I was expecting comedy when I decided to watch it. I actually stopped the movie because I thought I got the wrong movie after a few minutes into the movie. :P The movie features weird special effects which are out of the ordinary.

... It's also a masterpiece, but I could understand how that could slip your mind. ;)

The Cameraman (1928)
Charming. Entertaining. Goes down easy.

The Deer Hunter (1978)
Sticks with you like a thorn. Highly recommended.

I just finished rewatching:

Tropic Thunder
{"name":"MV5BNDE5NjQzMDkzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODI3ODI3MQ@@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/4\/9\/4934e7a2e9d25dea9f526f1239555d7b.jpg","w":512,"h":720,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/4\/9\/4934e7a2e9d25dea9f526f1239555d7b"}MV5BNDE5NjQzMDkzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODI3ODI3MQ@@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg

Robert Downy Jr's best role ever. He plays an Australian actor that plays a black man that at one point plays an Asian poppy farmer. Ben Stiller wrote, directed, and acted in it. And it's one gigantic hilarious critique of Hollywood's internal politics, and their portrayal of autistic people. Plenty of shallow disability groups protested the movie not bothering to realize it was actually on their side.

I need to rewatch, Patton:
MV5BMTI5ODQ5MDgzNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMzA5NzE5._V1_SY317_CR7,0,214,317_AL_.jpg

An amazing movie about an amazing man. I don't recall the specifics, but it's definitely in my "to rewatch soon" bin.

Deer Hunter

That and Apocalypse Now are two war movies I've never watched but plan to. Those three hour movies usually make me hesitant to start and know I'm going to burn that much time.

Tropic Thunder

Blackface made the news recently, and I recalled this movie (which I have heard about but have not seen). Thanks to your description, I can finally make sense of the world. I did not realize Downy Jr was playing a role within a role.

Apocalypse Now is on my list, as well. I have a long list, as I like to mull over films after seeing them.

I found one of my older good movie lists:

MV5BODU4MjU4NjIwNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDU2MjEyMDE@._V1_SX214_AL_.jpg

The Shawshank Redemption. Movie history (that is, it set the bar and people will copy it.) A guy goes to prison for the murder of his wife that he didn't commit. The story follows him as he is "broken in" and the roller coaster of his pride and faith that he will one day escape. One of Morgan Freeman's best roles, and one of the best movies about human spirit and struggle.

{"name":"The_Fugitive_movie.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/e\/d\/ed528283aaaf409aab2d3ac7336b94d1.jpg","w":300,"h":404,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/e\/d\/ed528283aaaf409aab2d3ac7336b94d1"}The_Fugitive_movie.jpg
The Fugitive. More movie history. Harrison Ford, a world-class doctor, is framed for a murder he didn't commit. He escapes when his prison bus crashes. Absolutely great face off between Harrison Ford, and Tommy Lee Jones, a ranger tasked with finding him. As he outwits the police and everyone looking for him, while tracking down his wife's murderer.

{"name":"Gladiator_ver1.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/c\/2\/c2964178cc7c2325772c5cd240715ca8.jpg","w":272,"h":426,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/c\/2\/c2964178cc7c2325772c5cd240715ca8"}Gladiator_ver1.jpg
The Gladiator. A combination of the stories of Sparticus and a Roman war general. Russell Crowe is set to become leader of Rome because the Caesar doesn't trust is demented son. His son finds out, kills his father, and has Russell Crowe thrown out/executed, and his family all murdered. Crowe becomes a gladiator, rises through the ranks, in his hope of getting his revenge.

{"name":"cf894d64-049b-49bd-8b35-0252c06fdc50.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/a\/5\/a52695c0011cfd4d3ca59ed64e67b998.jpg","w":300,"h":328,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/a\/5\/a52695c0011cfd4d3ca59ed64e67b998"}cf894d64-049b-49bd-8b35-0252c06fdc50.jpg
Deliverance: I don't know what to say. It's amazing. A few men go out into the wilderness before a river is set to be destroyed by a dam under construction. Things do not go as simply as planned.

{"name":"Book_of_eli_poster.jpg","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/3\/5\/3535f59baa0d40dd588c4a9416eb453a.jpg","w":296,"h":438,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/3\/5\/3535f59baa0d40dd588c4a9416eb453a"}Book_of_eli_poster.jpg
Book of Eli. After the Apocalypse, Denzel Washington is the last man on Earth with a copy of the Bible. Religion is power, and it must not be given to people who would use it to control and dominate people. This is the story of his journey.

I've got plenty more to come, but these are seem to share a common "struggle of man" element.
