For some reason the trackball changes to white on photos, it's actually got a beautiful deep red light (12 red leds from below). It was supposed to be yellow but I only had red so used those and haven't been bothered to get more....

If I'd go back, I'd probably spray the kick-panel in similar colours and some different art.....

Does it work?

Works beautifully :)

Well, a few minor software glitches with the emulators and MaLa but nothing serious, just need to fine-tune the buttons used for non-mame stuff.

I'll post a video when I get time.

The little pixel guy on the front reminds me of Jet Set Willy...

Lovely cabinet btw.

There's a very good reason for that.

The kick-panel is the thing I don't like. If I could be bothered I'd get more vinyl art done with matching colours and a nice picture on it....

But adding the glass and bezel set it off nicely and being tinted, makes it look much more arcade like.

I guess it is alright ;). Seriously, it looks really good. Looks like you bought a professional cabinet instead of making it yourself so that is very impressive.

I was always intrigued about making my own arcade until I realised it was a disguised PC and Monitor with simply a fancier Joystick.

Enjoy! and have fun

Yes. I realised that poetry was just a bunch of words that you can find in any other book so haven't bothered to read any more since then.

Yeah, I bought the Project Arcade book that teaches you how to build one, but I don't have the money to do it so I just have it with my programming books. Yet another thing I want to do but lack the talent to do :P.

Well, you could have found everything you needed on the internet and used the money you spent on the book to pay for half the control panel parts :P

I imagine it's the tools needed that cost the most (Well, except for maybe the display panel).

Possibly, the entire list of tools I needed were:

Jigsaw (electric not a 1000 piece one)
Circular saw
Try Square
Sliding Bevel
Drill (with wood bits, counter-sink bit)
Chisels
Two workbenches
G clamps
scissor clamps
Stanley knife
Belt sander
digital radio tuned to 'Absolute 80s' station
and everyone's favourite, a hammer

Parts included:
MDF
1.5x3/4 timber
Various wood screws and glue
polycarbonate
glass
paint/primer
t-molding
buttons/joysticks/keyboard controller/trackball/wire
fluorescent light
an old pc

Neil, sorry if it was already asked and you already provided an answer but: how much did everything cost?

When you have the right tools, it's always easier to do.

For home, considering my lack of space, I would rather want something compact to play arcade games (like a OUYA).

I might try it someday, but I do not want to have a disguised desktop. For example, I would have to have a screen specifically designed for arcade rather than buying any PC LCD screen and locking it in a wood case.

Speaking of arcade (off topic), there is a cool indie game on Xbox called "arcadecraft" which is some sort of arcade room sim where you buy machines and manage your arcade. Pretty cool for an indie game! It's just a shame they could not use real game names.

Enjoy! and have fun

Well, Arcade do (and did) HAVE commercial grade screen locked in a wood case....with no case or bezel of any kind for the most part....still...why bother? To have a more diffcult part to maintain?

EDIT: damn, I'm looking at it and I want just to say again awesome.

Doubt that, Barnes and Noble couldn't sell any of them so they had it marked down so I only paid like $25 or $30 for it.

Teachers always give that BS answer. Being a garbage man is 90% work, 10% talent (driving and chucking bags of trash require probably less than 10% talent). Teachers are dumbasses for that line because the ratio of work to talent is job dependent.

Well wife would probably let me get the stuff I needed over the course of a few months. Now tools, I could use my father-in-law's tools, but I've only used screwdrivers and wrenches, drills, but not messed with routers, jigsaw, or anything like that so I would have to do practice cuts to get used to using it and not botching the whole thing (steady hand with a jigsaw is definitely more than 10% talent :P).

Just to nitpick, I was referring to Vanneto's quote...anything "produced" is a mix of work, talent and money. ;D

You are too literal. There is truth to the sentiment. I have a talent for playing piano. But to become a professional piano player touring the world I have to work hard, really hard! What matters most is hard work (thus 90%), but it wont matter with zero talent of course. The actual ratio is not important though.
