Let's argue about American gun laws again ;)

Thinking about the Batman shootings, I can see a need for self-defence and even recreational shooting, but who really needs an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, two Glock handguns, a 12-gauge shotgun and 6,000 rounds of bullets for personal use?

Given strict gun laws will never be passed, why not do something like limit gun ownership in the home to a single gun per person with limited rounds and any more (like the above) require them to be kept at official gun clubs or require special permits like farmers, red-necks, etc.

A member of the well-regulated militia, of course. :P

Well, since the criminals aren't supposed to be using guns to commit crimes, and many of those aren't supposed to have guns at all, what good is making more laws? Just for some people to feel good, I suppose.

BTW, there was an armed robbery a kilometer from my house not quite a month ago, AFAIK, the clerk was shot without offering resistance.

http://www.jdnews.com/articles/shot-105549-clerk-employees.html

The people working there are Middle Eastern something-or-other, and sometimes a bit of a language barrier comes up, but when I asked one of them a couple of weeks ago if the perpetrator was caught, he replied "He was shot", I asked for clarification, and he repeated "He was SHOT!". Somehow I felt better anyway.

If we're all going to kill eachother anyway, let's us have rocket launchers and missiles, oh and a few holy grenades would be cool to ;)

The idea of everybody killing everybody is slippery slope (?) fear-mongering. We need defense against the very few who aren't rational enough to keep from killing other people for the hell of it, or, given the spineless pacifism nowadays, even more shady types taking advantage of the "criminals are angels who lost their way" slaps on the wrist.

I'm pretty sure it's not legal to toss a smoke bomb into a theatre, but he did. I doubt he legally obtained all of the explosives he used to booby trap his apartment.

why not do something like limit gun ownership

There are a lot of limitations depending on the state and city, but it doesn't really matter. A guy like this is going to get his hands on illegal things. Strict gun laws protect against accidents and "crimes of passion," but crazy people will always find a way to do crazy things.

Agreed. Regarding "crimes of passion," this is what waiting periods are for, right? Yet many states don't seem to have them. I wonder why. Seems like there's no reason not to.

Doesn't look like that's working. It certainly didn't here.

Not eliminate it entirely, but keep it down.

From the news here, it seems that what kept it down was his weapon malfunctioning :P

You can't assume there's some ideal law or set of laws that could compensate or neutralize the fact that Americans are just crazy fucked up gun and violence lovers.

Sorry, if that was rude. But I fully admit that we Finns are even more fucked up!

I have 4 rifles with 1k ammo for each and 3 handguns with several hundred rounds for them. Keep your silly laws away from me.

I agree. It's a cultural thing, and laws aren't going to change that. In cities you have gangs, and in the rural areas you have rednecks. And the nice thing is for the most part they are just shooting each other.

Does the American law only allow carrying a firearm for self defense or are you also allowed to wield a sword or an axe, halberd, crossbow, flail, etc.?

I do understand those things would be kind of useless against some lunatic with a gun but at least that would add some style to the whole weapon-for-self-defense thing.

Also, it would make killing and being killed more personal again and you'd have to have some actually skill to pull it off. :P

Not much skill involved in flailing around a flail. Or hitting someone from the back with an axe.

The laws are local or at the state level; so the answer is yes and no.

I have several guns. I take them to the local range and put rounds through them, on occasion. It's fun, if you're into that.

I go through somewhere in the neighborhood of one thousand rounds of .45 ACP in a year. That encompasses going to the range a little less than once a month and putting one hundred rounds through each time. That's not much, really. I may go through approximately five hundred rounds of .22 LR, and fifty .30-30 in the same period, depending on the weather, moon phase, etc.

If you want to live somewhere where there are no guns, feel free to do so.

I can't be bothered to read all of this, because it's rubbish. Sirocco leave your guns at the range mate. Americans should NOT be allowed guns at home, end of story*

I can see it now. 2024, gun laws are strict as hell. Gun shops become regulated to one shop per city. Way around the new laws? Bought AR-15 and AK-47 from the back of a van two days ago.

Look at computers, piracy is illegal, yet people find ways around it so they don't pay for things. Guns are the same way, remove one method for getting them and they will find a new method for getting guns.

I take it some of you heard about the man who defended an internet cafe against 2 robbers with a gun of his own.

video

Considering that Holmes surrendered peacefully, do you think he would have attacked if he was confident that there were likely guns among the audience?

I think it's amazing that the old man didn't kill anyone at that range. Unless he wasn't try to actually hit anyone.

It's really hard to tell with those cameras if he was aiming at them or not.

It looks to me like he did intend to shoot them, but wasn't necessarily going for a kill shot, and even if he was he was more than likely on autopilot and his targets were moving (and at close range good luck trying to follow them in 3-dimensional space unless you have been trained to do it). It looks like a small caliber gun (I didn't do any research beyond watching the YouTube clip), and even after both being shot they seem plenty capable of moving fast (albiet, they would have had a good dose of adrenaline pumping through them at the time). There are a lot of places that you can be shot and not die for a long period of time or at all given rudimentary treatment. I don't think it's overly surprising that they both survived. Since they didn't shoot back I am assuming they were either bluffing and/or didn't have loaded guns or were too afraid of the consequences if they did.
