Popularity of Allegro. |

Let's speak hypocritically here for a moment. If I make a program, game, plug-in or whatever and I use Allegro, the license says that I don't have to say that I used Allegro at all. However, that's not the issue that I'm thinking about. If I make a <Fill-in-the-Blank> and it's amazingly popular, would the Allegro community want me to tell people that I used it? I'm thinking a something or other that about as popular as a root canal.... Errr, as popular as Flash or something. So I guess in a nutshell, my question is this: Does the Allegro community want a massive amount of publicity and/or influx of people joining (probably trolling) the forums? I'm going to start writing somethings here soon, and there's a chance one of them might be pretty popular. There's also the chance that I'll be the center of a massive orgy with hot chicks on every possible appendage of mine pleasing both themselves and me........... However the popular program dream seems to be more likely. The popular as a root canal seems highly likely as well. Allegro.cc seems to have a nice 'balance' of posting speed and expertise and I would hate for that to be disrupted by your amazing game that will change everything. Personally, I don't think it's much to worry about. A game/program would have to be really remarkable to shift the balance in any measurable way. Think of the people who would use the program, now from that think of the people interested in programming, from that, think of the people who do programming. From that, take the amount of people who would be interested in allegro. Then take out the flakes. Quote: Aren't we all? I certainly am. Jesse Lenney said: Aren't we all? Yes, yes we are. However, statistically, if we all continually make programs, there's going to be at least one program made with Allegro that will in fact be a major winner. It's like winning the lottery. And since I don't play the lottery, maybe I have a chance here. Either way, I have a low, but still possible chance of winning and making money off of it. I'm asking for information before it hits big, that way, in the unlikely event that the community doesn't want the added publicity and it's very popular, I won't have to make it public. Google would find the information sooner or later. So, I'm doing the all encompassing, "What if" ahead of time. Still a few more years to go, I've got to relearn C and C++ again. Or maybe I am the one that's high..... Dunno off of what though, I don't do drugs........ Which always makes me wonder even more about myself at times. What are the stats you are talking about? I'm pretty sure whether you have one novice programmer with little motivation or genius or one million of them, there is no chance whatsoever that any "major winner" will be created either on purpose or accident. |

I didn't ask for, or want any logic or reasoning to be in this discussion. If it were serious, I wouldn't have used the word hypocritically in my first sentence. A simple yay or nay with a snide remark would suffice. "* Entoutcas has quit IRC (Quit: And the Lord said unto John; Come forth and receive eternal life. But John came fifth and won a toaster...)" |

I think if you create a super good game, and sell 1.000.000 in just one hour, that doesn't mean that people is going to says things like: -"WoW what a game, I want to make it too" At least, your saying things like this in your book/tutorials/webpage/TV show/Radio Show... -"How to create the next Crysis using Allegro" But if for some reason you manage to attract a lot of people to this forum, I think it will collapse, since isn't prepared. Let's say from almost 13.000 users that Allegro currently have, abruptly grows to 19.000, there will be a lot of ignorants (including me) asking the same questions all over the time like currently is happening, but worse. So I think Allegro should growth slowly and also should grow with a good wiki... Actually I think we're in this loop: while(Allegro_exist){ if(Wiki_is_bigger) members++; if(members>prepared_members) al_restore_state(Forum) }

Could you explain the difference between speaking hypocritically and hypothetically? |

I think where Allegro might benefit from something like this, when in fact 1,000,000+ copies of OMFGBBQ are sold is if OMFGBBQ has a modding system and an API. That would probably bring in the most since you would then have programmers interested in making and selling mods, otherwise the probability is as was already mentioned which then even with millions of copies sold, it still would not bring much attention to the underlying API. I have personally found that what seems to draw people to SDL is just how cross platform it is. There is SDL ports for Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 now I think, GameCube, Xbox, PSP, etc. I think having an iPhone port has helped drive up AL5's popularity. I bet it would help even more if someone had the patience to port it to other platforms (not saying this is in any way an easy task though). I'm almost done my big GUI API which, while being back end independent, currently only has a back end for Allegro 5, which will hopefully help force AL5 onto those who use it hah Agui GUI API -> https://github.com/jmasterx/Agui |

I like reading the regular (don't we all have our favourites?) posters comments and would hate for those to be lost in a torrent of sh*te. Things are good. Next question.

I'd say speaking hypocritically is saying something like I don't wash dishes with soap, and then turning around and washing your dishes with soap. Whereas speaking hypothetically is sort of like a what-if scenario. It can be replaced with 'let's say', ex: hypothetically, if I won $100,000,000.00 I would immediately go buy a house. hypocritical - deceptive, just pretending to be good, as in: It is hypocritical to say tell your children to behave a certain way and then do the exact opposite yourself.
In a hypothetical way; as a hypothesis; Used to introduce a proposition to discussion without commitment to its truth. EDIT: Made underlines work. "* Entoutcas has quit IRC (Quit: And the Lord said unto John; Come forth and receive eternal life. But John came fifth and won a toaster...)" |

Hypocrisy is about pretending you adhere to some sort of "moral" code when in fact you do not. But continue to humor me by explaining how your usage of the word is relevant. |

As I said: "Let's speak hypocritically here for a moment." Let's pretend. I believe you're putting too much thought into this post. While indeed it did start out as a question that I was going to ask in a serious manner, I changed it before posting the original question because I figured it wouldn't get very far at all as serious inquiry. And as others have said, no matter how popular anything I make becomes, it's highly unlikely that it will cause a massive flood to the Allegro forums.
