You should try switching C: and / to an SSD now. that blew me away yet again.

My linux systems with a SSD start up in 8 seconds (not counting the shitty ass BIOS delays) to the KDM login. KDE also starts up a hell of a lot faster. Now my desktop has a crappy IO problem so its not starting up as fast as it could, I bet it could start up to KDE in about 10 seconds if it weren't for the stupid mobo, rather than just to KDM in 8.

Well, an SSD might be a bit expensive over here especially. ;) I don't really have any plans for my next upgrade. I would have to save money again, probably for a new GPU. This one's already getting a bit old.

Aaaand I'm totally out of ideas what to do now with so much free space now. :-[ It's kind of the "I have so many options so I can't decide which one to choose" attitude.

He's my server.

He's related to Natasha (my desktop), Nell (my old laptop), Chauncey (my HTPC), and Lisa (my new laptop). I used to have a couple more named machines but their duties got taken over by boris when he got a massive upgrade.

Go brag somewhere else TF. :P

Anyway, Ubuntu in a VM works just fine using 3D hardware acceleration. I'll try tomorrow and install A5 from SVN. Hopefully, I'll be able to build my games on it just fine, and distribute Linux versions. ^_^

I already got a torrent client, but I don't have anything in mind, and I don't really want to. I'll probably install most of my multiplayer games and have some fun. I will also keep my other favourite games(such as Baldur's Gate, IWD, etc.) to rip resources from. And to give it a playthrough once in a while.

I could slap a 8800GTS in there, but I specially bought the GPU it has because its super low power. Doesn't need a separate power connector, and runs without a fan :)

Its so I don't have to type IP addresses on the network mainly. I'm hoping the nameing theme is obvious (except for lisa, there is only one female in the original group...).

k ok, let's hear the specs from the whole family.

Ok, Chauncey is actually the old boris, with a new case and hd. He was my server for a year or two, didn't expect to upgrade him so fast tbh. He's now my home theater PC.

Chauncey:
Phenom I x4 9550
4G DDR2 SDRAM
1x30G SSD
1x320G SATA II HD
1xDVDRW

Natasha:
Intel Core2Quad 6600
2G DDR2 SDRAM (was 4G till two sticks failed :( )
1x30G SSD
1x1TB HD (moving to boris, will put one of my 640G drives here instead)
1xDVDRW
NVidia 8800GTS

Nell:
14" LCD
AMD Athlon XP-M
768MB DDR1 SDRAM
Old Radeon GFX
1x160G HD (partitioned to 120 since the chipset can't do DMA past 120G)

Lisa:
15.1" WXGA (1280x800) LED Backlit LCD w/matte finish
Intel Core2Duo T9400-M w/6M cache
4G DDR2 SDRAM
1x160G SATAII HD
GbE Lan
802.11abg wifi
SD Card slot
HDMI + VGA out
1xFirewire + 4xUSB
1xExpress Card slot

I don't use Nell much anymore though. I stick mainly to Boris, and Lisa, and Chauncey, though I use Natasha on occasion.

Heck no. He's my firewall, he runs the wiki, my svn server, print server, file server, asterisk server, and a bunch of other random things.

Local Area Network bw is 70MB/s.
Internet bandwidth is 1.8MB/s (with occasional bursts to 3MB/s+)

Note though, it generally takes me a year or two to actually fill up 1TB of space, at least of stuff I actually want to keep. I bought boris about a year ago, and had about 1TB of space free. Now it shows 30G but theres a bunch of stuff I can delete, and will eventually.

Yup. Gigabit Ethernet. With jumbo frames I could probably get closer to 90MB/s but I still have some legacy 100mbps devices that don't support jumbo frames, so I have to live with 70MB/s :)

I know. But people don't seem to complain much about it. Even when I was at my sister's I found performance to be ok.

I could get 2mbps or 5mbps upload (with 25 and 100 mbps down respectively) with my ISP but those options are like $106/mo and $160/mo. Something I just can't afford.

I've enabled jumbo-frames on my gigabit LAN, and haven't had any issues with 100mbps devices, or devices not supporting jumbo frames. I know you've said something about this several times though, I just don't remember what exactly you said.

Nope. And the desktop is rarely on, but its completely silent from a few feet away when it is on. The server is in a little spare room I have. The laptop is pretty quiet. And the HTPC is only on when I'm watching tv or listening to music with it. And its fairly quiet.

According to the standard, devices that don't support jumbo frames won't understand the packets coming at them. I've tried enabling jumbo frames, and it causes some of my devices to not see any traffic from machines with jumbo frames enabled.
