Adding trackback functionality

Why don't you add pingback/trackback support? I have noticed a few forums supporting them lately, which may drive a few more hits back and forth for a small price, especially when referencing articles from other sites.

Isn't it a stupid waste? Most times half the comments to blog posts are inane "track backs". Which I find entirely useless.

I really don't understand the point of trackbacks

As far as I understand, it is a single POST to the trackback url. It is just a way to let the writer know his article has been deferenced by another site.

I think the most useful feedback is to know if a blogger links to a Depot project. I've started to log incoming trackbacks on all pages just to see how much it is used.

Except its usually implemented as some retarded post or reply to the item at hand. It would have to be done differently from most sites to make it any kind of useful.

That is the standard. Some sites put it as a comment within the comments, some others split the pingbacks and comments into two different sections. Since we reference so many articles, I thought it would be nice to be able to leave a trackback whenever we reference an article outside. Having a trackback for the Depot sounds nice too, people would be able to link towards projects.

I barely read blog or article comments, may post mine but never care about others' comments ;) But I think it is polite to let the author of a note know someone referenced his work (just like I license my pictures under CC-SA and would like having them attributed to me).

Oh, you mean have a.cc post a trackback, not implement it so other sites can track back in to us? That makes more sense then, I thought you were recommending the latter and was wondering how it was that useful.

Well, tracking back a forum post here would not make much sense. However, Matthew has a good point: tracking back a depot entry would be worth.

So if I post a link to a Depot project on other sites you'll know about it?

No. Not unless you send a "trackback ping." They are most often used by bloggers.

But of course if someone clicks on a link from your site to mine, then (assuming the referrer header isn't suppressed) I know about it.

Now I must link to this site everywhere!

Why would I do this? What effect would it have on anything? I don't know! FOR THE RANDOMNESS!

I just like this thread because I learned something new from it (the existence of trackbacks).
