GMail lockout

For some reason, I can't log into GMail anymore since the reformat. I put in my name and password, I get a little "Loading" flash in the corner, and then I get a blank screen. Viewing the page source (which is only a few lines) tells me my Javascript isn't enabled. Which it is. I tried disabling my firewall since from the source it seems to be killing some popups (maybe GMail doesn't like that) but it didn't help.

Firewall is Kerio, which didn't affect GMail a week ago. Fresh install of both it and Firefox of course. Any ideas?

Have you tried MSIE? I've had some problems with FF and Gmail, but only when my dial up connection is super slow. Other than that, I've had to clear my cache once and a while, but if you just installed FF that shouldn't be an issue...

You can connect to Gmail with a POP3 client if you need your mail.

username: user@gmail.com
password: *******
pop3 server: pop.gmail.com
smtp server: smtp.gmail.com

Oh, and you have to enable SSL encryption for pop3 (port 995).

23, there's an email about WoW in your box. That's why you can't get to it ;)

Yeah, I had to get into GMail via IE to set it up, but Thunderbird seems to have no problem getting GMail. I have no new messages so I don't know for sure, but it seems to be working.

Nifty. 8-) Just need my video card now and I'll be set. :P

Cookie for you.

Add gmail.google.com to your site exceptions in Kerio and allow everything.

pop.gmail.com gets me connection refused all the time. Both my gmail accounts are pop enabled.

GMail works fine for me in ff btw.

[edit] DUH, thanks ML. SSL works

Note: I started using a proxy server at work, and it effectively stopped me from viewing my gmail messages (although I still could log on); I probably didn't have a gmail exception set for the proxy -- but whatever...

I used to get that same sort of crap from GMail when I was using an Internet Explorer less than version 6.0...dunno if that helps.
Gmail just wouldn't load...and I was confused untill I checked at page that told me that my Internet Explorer version was too low...:P
I've never had trouble with it in Firefox, though...

No one here thinks FF (or any browser) is perfect. It is just so much better than MSIE that there is no contest.

For your information, Google servers different content for GMail, depending on the browser. So, you cannot draw any comparison conclusions from a browser working or not working on Gmail. In fact, Google supported MSIE first with Gmail - not because it was the best browser, but that is what the largest % of its user base uses. I can only reason that they spend the most time making sure their IE version works. One of the last browsers they added support for was Opera -- perhaps the most standards compliant one out there.

Over 50 vulnerabilities that allow people control your computer through Firefox were reported last year. So, Firefox is not perfect ;)

But still great. And since I'm using windows, anything that doesn't work in FireFox, IE works with. ;D

ReyBrujo: How many of those were Windows vulnerabilities though. :) If FF passes on a harmless activity to Windows (such as decoding a JPEG) and Windows fails to do such a thing securely, is FF really at fault? They could roll their own versions of everything for the browser, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

And, as always mentioned, the FF team actually promptly fixes any critical vulnerabilities after they are discovered. So if one compares the amount of time that MSIE and FF are critically vulnerable, FF would win the "more secure" title easily. But that said, I think the biggest real problem is not hackers hacking into your computer, but the ease of which 3rd party software can be installed. I do a lot of PC support for friends and family and there is a noticeable difference of PC health on those PCs that I have installed FF on and those that I have not.
